It also provides a wide viewing angle thanks to the combination of IPS (in-plane switching) technology, an advanced polarizing filter and anti-glare technology.
Faster Performance
The Kindle Fire HD is over 60% faster than the previous generation Kindle Fire thanks to its fast 1.5GHz dual-core processor and Imagination PowerVR 3D graphics core that ensures games and video run smoothly as well.
Longer Battery Life
The Kindle Fire HD battery lasts longer than the previous generation Kindle Fire. It lasts up to 10 hours when reading, surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video, or listening to music.
Streamlined Design
Kindle Fire HD features a smaller bezel, cleaner lines and optimized button placements. The streamlined design makes the Kindle Fire HD easy to hold, so you can get lost in your viewing experience.

Dolby Digital Plus includes technology that adjusts volume, creates virtual surround sound and delivers easier-to-understand dialogue in movies and TV shows. Kindle Fire HD is designed to automatically optimize the audio profile based on what you're doing (with or without headphones), such as watching a movie or listening to music.
Parents Love Kindle FreeTime
Kindle FreeTime is free on every new Kindle Fire. It allows parents to create a profile for each of their children and choose what books, apps, games and videos they want to give their kids access to. They can also set daily limits for tablet use, or restrict certain categories - like games and video - while leaving unlimited time for reading. When kids use Kindle FreeTime, it's like they have their very own personalized tablet.
Kids Love Kindle FreeTime Unlimited
Kindle FreeTime Unlimited is the first-ever all-in-one subscription that brings together kid-friendly books, games, educational apps, movies and TV shows - all the types of content that kids and parents love. From just $2.99 per month, enjoy unlimited access to content from Disney, Nickelodeon, Sesame Street, PBS and more.
Light & Durable
Weighing just 12.2 ounces, Kindle Fire HD is lightweight and comfortable to hold in one hand. It is also designed to stand up to accidental bumps and scrapes. The display is 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, so you can let your child play without worry.
Fire OS 3.0 Mojito
Kindle Fire tablets are powered by Fire OS 3.0 Mojito, which starts with Android and adds cloud services, a content-forward user interface, built-in media libraries, productivity apps, and low-level platform enhancements to integrate downloadable digital content and improve performance for Kindle Fire tablets.
Faster Access to Apps & Info
Fire OS 3.0 includes an enhanced, content-first home screen that allows users to easily switch between viewing their recent content and apps in Carousel View or favorites in Grid View. The Quick Switch feature uses a side swipe gesture to easily move between multiple apps or individual content items without navigating home.
Easier Content Management
The 1-Tap Archive frees up space on your Kindle Fire by identifying items that have not been used recently and offering a 1-tap option to quickly move them to your cloud for later retrieval. Optimized Download ensures the performance of the app you are using isn't impacted by background download activity.
Accessibility Features
Blind and visually impaired customers can leverage improved accessibility tools such as Screen Reader, Explore by Touch and Screen Magnifier. Screen Reader features IVONA's award-winning natural language text-to-speech voice engine.
Fast Silk Web Browser
Silk is a cloud-optimized web browser, exclusive to Kindle Fire. The integrated version is faster and packed with features. Reading View removes all unnecessary images and other website clutter for a clean, easy-to-read version of the site. A left panel menu makes the browser easier to navigate. And Silk's redesigned content pages - Most Visited, Bookmarks, Trending Now and others - make it easier to find and access web content.
All Your Personal E-Mail
The e-mail app on Kindle Fire makes sending mail, viewing attachments, grouping conversations by subject, and syncing contacts simple. The app provides full support for the world's most popular e-mail providers like Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo!, AOL and more.
Fast, Powerful Wi-Fi
When it comes to HD content, bandwidth is everything. Without it, you get video buffering, slow downloads and dropped connections. Kindle Fire HD solves this issue by using dual-band, single-antenna Wi-Fi. With this, you'll enjoy fewer dropped connections and faster media streaming, plus you'll be able to go further from your wireless hotspot than with other tablets. The tablet uses the 802.11 a/b/g/n standard with support for WEP, WPA and WPA2 security using password authentication. It does not support connecting to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) Wi-Fi networks.

The videos and pictures on my Kindle Fire HD looks better than anything I have ever seen on a 7 inch screen. The sound must be true Dolby, because it's terrific with or without headphones. Just those two features alone makes this tablet stand out. This tablet does what the fruit tablet does and then some. You actually get a kindle.com email address that you can use to send documents or whatever to your tablet. You can read books, magazines and newspapers. You can stream or download Youtube or whoever videos. And games and apps are aplenty. This tablet does everything. It doesn't have a camera, but I do,so no problem there. You can put your own pictures and videos on the Kindle.Just use a usb cable. Because this tablet has many functions and performs them well, it MORE than makes up the lack of a camera. As a matter of fact, I own the 8GB version too.

We have the 1 st generation Fire HD so this review is mostly for folks who are interested in how the two compare. Before that, I must stress that the Kindle in general is best for consuming Amazon's contents. If you want a "real" tablet, there are better choices from Android and Apple. I have a iPad mini and I think it is in a different league, well worth its higher price. This is not a review to compare the two; however.

This version of the Fire seems slightly lighter than the old one. Amazon took out the camera, so this could be one of the reasons for the weight reduction. It is still heavier than the iPadmini but it is much better. The camera on the Kindle is pretty useless since it has no built in app to use it as a general camera. They separated the power button and the volume control so now you won't turn the device off when you try to change the volume. In the new one you can now set up "Collection" for your books this allows for some levels of organization as your book collection grow. However in FreeTime, all the apps and books are still just there, and you cannot group them in ways that fit you. This is annoying. So far no crash yet so the new one may be more stable than the old one, but only time can tell. The Silk (web browser) in the old version crashes often.

In this review, I want to point out three things that prompted me to call Amazon's Help line as this may affect your decision to buy when you already have the old version.

        1. In the old version, if you turn off the device when you are in FreeTime, you still need to give the password next time you power it on. In the new version, you will go back to FreeTime directly. I assume Amazon is very confident that once you get into FreeTime, there is no where else you can go, and you need the password to exit FreeTime. I personally would feel more secure if a password is needed to turn on the device, but I can see how the new way of doing things may be better for the kids.

        2. We have a WiFi extender to help the signal in one corner of the house. All other devices in the house, iPhones, iPad, PC, Mac, etc have no problems connecting. However in both versions of the Fire, they are very reluctant to connect and I need to power it on/off for this to happen. Customer support at Amazon said that they are aware of this and is working on it. It is vert annoying for us because it is the kid's room where we need the extender.

        3. We found that some items in FreeTime are accessible from one device but not the others. For example, "Plants and Zombies" can be seen with the old device, but absent from the new. Some are the reverse. Apparently Amazon knows about this and is working on this. We bought two Kindles for our two kids so each can have his own collection of apps and books. This problem really messes up our plans.

We primarily use it for FreeTime. This will work if the contents in FreeTime can continue to grow both in numbers and in quality. Otherwise at $7 a month (Family subscription), you can buy a lot of apps from Apple's App Store.

Love my Kindle Fire 7 HD, it's a great tablet. This is the best thing if you're not ready to lay down a lot of cash for an iPad. This wonderful tablet is a great reader but can work as a mini-pc as well. I am able to buy apps, check my email, read any newspaper, listen to music and write the great American Novel without have to lug around a laptop. The Kindle Fire is also compatible with a bluetooth keyboard!

Excellent price and a good product. My only concern is that the Kindle was constantaly rebooting the first 2 days after receiving it. After calling Support they suggested restoring the tablet back to the factory setting. So far that seems to be working.

Comments about Kindle 16GB Fire HD 7" Tablet:
