The Sound Devices 633 6-Input Field Production Mixer and Digital Recorder is designed for production audio mixing and recording on set and in the field. The unit is housed in a compact lightweight molded metalized carbon-fiber chassis and features six analog inputs: three XLR microphone preamplifier inputs with selectable phantom power, high-pass filters, input limiters, faders and variable pans, as well as three line-level TA3 (mini-XLR) inputs. The first XLR input can also function as an AES digital input and accept AES3 or AES42 inputs with +10 V phantom power for digital microphones. The two XLR outputs can also be used as four channels of AES output.

All of the unit's inputs can be assigned to the mixer's six output buses: left, right, Aux 1, Aux 2, Aux 3, and Aux 4. Selectable input delay on all six inputs and output bus delay on all six buses makes it easy to correct lip-syncing issues between audio and video. The unit's 1/4" headphone output can be configured with different user-presets and a favorite mode allows for quick source selection when monitoring.

The device can record to an SD card, CompactFlash card, or both memory card formats simultaneously in mono or poly WAV or MP3 file formats. The cards can be set to record redundant backups or combinations of WAV and time-coded MP3s for dailies and transcription purposes. The six inputs, output bus left, output bus right, aux 1, and aux 2 can all be recorded to individual tracks at 24-bit 48 kHz resolution for a total of ten tracks. This is useful for having both individual tracks from the six inputs, as well as the recordist's field mix. Up to six tracks can be recorded at 24-bit 96 kHz and 192 kHz sample rates.

The device can be powered by any of four different simultaneously coexistent power sources, including 12 to 18 VDC from an external power supply (sold separately), two removable 7.2 V L-type lithium-ion batteries (sold separately), and six internal AA batteries (NiMH recommended, sold separately). The unit's LCD display indicates battery levels for the various sources. When one power supply is depleted, the mixer will automatically switch to the next power supply without interruption. When all power supplies are depleted, the device's built-in PowerSafe trickle-charge battery will keep the device running for an additional 10 seconds so that all files can be saved and closed properly and ensure that no data is lost. The built-in battery also allows the device to power up and start recording in two seconds for near immediate operation.

The unit is built with dedicated ergonomic controls for all major mixing and recording functions and features an LCD display that can be viewed in all types of lighting. The background of the display can be changed in the menu settings between day and night modes to make the meters easier to read. An integrated high-accuracy Timecode generator supports all common rates and modes. A USB port allows for the connection of a computer keyboard for easy entering of metadata to better organize files. The unit is built to be durable in the field, and includes gasket seals to protect the internal circuitry from the elements.

Comments about Sound Devices 633 6-Input Compact Field Mixer and 10-Track Digital Recorder:

I've been a long time Sound Devices user, starting with the MixPre-D, cute little field mixer that one!

The 633 is not only an amazingly thought out piece of machinery, but it's features are unmatched for the price, and is as solid as a rock.

I went to a location, was hired as a Director of Photography (my background however is music/audio) and was appalled to learn that the sound pro brought along a ZOOM H6. These little things are great for all kinds of things, but not for capturing critical audio like a film's dialogue, I thought, but then I just went along with it. We wrap up three days on location just to have a nightmarish LOUD electrical hum/interferance in about 30% of the audio files. You can blame the location's electrical outlets all you want, but I convinced the producer to re-film at same location, this time with PRO gear. SD633 had no issues with the location's electrical issues, and was stellar in every aspect, AND gave us timecode, redundancy with the 2 cards, great preamps and limiters, custom take names, etc, etc. Love the fact that it powers up in no time, multiple power sources...can you tell that I LOVE this thing??

Some have complain of the price, but look around and compare, No issue here; it will last you a lifetime, money well spent.

Comments about Sound Devices 633 6-Input Compact Field Mixer and 10-Track Digital Recorder:

This has all the features that I need for narrative location sound, and is future proof with AES support for digital microphones like the SuperCMIT. 3 Mic inputs and 3 line inputs are perfect for a single mic and a stereo array plus 3 wireless lavs. The menus are easy to navigate, and although it supports a USB keyboard I haven't needed one, the take manager is fast enough that nobody is waiting on me. Of course the sound quality is wonderful, but the thing that I like the most is the power. The options for powering this are extremely flexible, and I'm not worrying about the batteries running out anymore. I also like the ability to record to two different cards simultaneously. Overall this is a beast and I highly recommend it.

Comments about Sound Devices 633 6-Input Compact Field Mixer and 10-Track Digital Recorder:

This is a great item, but for sure a few notes are necessary. Not exactly disparaging things, but things to be aware of.

First off, power. You'll need some large L series batteries. Coming from a 552, I tried to run it off 6 AA. They with just one phantom and a lav they blew through at like 30 min a set. Was through 30 batteries in a day with serious on/off power management and realized I'd have to pay the extra $100 apiece. On L series 6300 with 1 phantom and 1-2 lavs I'm getting about 6 hours runtime apiece which is about a battery a production day (with breaks, etc). Long story short, plan on getting big power and backing up and only rely on AA for super backup while you hunt for extra L's.

What I love are the simple redundancies, file reliability between poly and mono wav options, fantastic build, and light weight. And of course it's a Sound Devices so that means fantastic build and great support.

It's well worth the buy if you need a top notch mixer/recorder for run/gun field work.

One other minor note. I bought it with the (kit) style Portrabrace and am not super happy. It's just an awkward fit against my body. The bracing loops are in the middle of the bag, not at the mixer, so the mixer tends to lean in towards your body, making it super easy to swipe the faders when it is at your side accidentally and pan way down, or just generally have a tough time reaching them.

I saw this advertised, saw how great it was and knew it would include a $$$pendy price tag. Then again what item from Sound Devices doesn't cost thousands. Happy I went 633 instead of 7 Series.-Killer menu-Mixing tracks -Much lighter than I imagined -It Eats AA alive so get the Sony batteries. (only last 20-30min on six AA) -And finally its even cooler in personI use this with the MikTek C5 studio pair mics to record dialogue for movies. No complaints.

Comments about Sound Devices 633 6-Input Compact Field Mixer and 10-Track Digital Recorder:

I'm a full-time sound dude. I just shot a reality pilot with this thing for a full week, used timecode, all six inputs and ran it for 16 hour plus days. It's a true work horse, it's light and it's super easy to use out of the box. I've tried all the little gizmos as well - connecting to the 788t, jamming, the keyboard metadata funfest, etc. and have giggled like a little boy when I see the glorious metadata in my edit bay.

Looking back, I would absolutely buy the kit. I thought I could acquire batteries, TA3 cables and other nicnacs al-la-carte for a lot less. Wrong. You can NEVER have enough cables even if cables from Sound Devices come at a premium.

B and H reviewer top tip: Read the instruction manual while playing with the thing. You'll be pro by page 10.

Comments about Sound Devices 633 6-Input Compact Field Mixer and 10-Track Digital Recorder:

Used in Indy filmmaking and a little ENG. Bag based, it really lightens my load. I used to carry a SD 302/702 combo. Worked great, but heavy by the end of the day. Fantastic SD quality. Expensive relative to comperable Zaxcom Maxx, but I can't abide membrane keys. Yes, the pots and switches are very close together. Big hands with big fingers could be a problem.

                                Same Recorder as 7 Series

Told by the Sound Device Team that its basically/is the same Recorder as the 7 Series but with a Mixer and 10-Track Recorder instead of just 2-Tracks with the SD 702T. Much better than spending more than 2K for the SD 702T plus another 1k for the SD 302 Mixer... This is all in one package with a much updated system in almost every aspect.
