The Gitzo GT1542T Series 1 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber Tripod combines compactness and light weight with strength and stability to support up to 17.6 lb. It reaches a maximum height of 58.7" and a minimum height of 13.5". When the center column is removed, and the optional GS1320D adapter disc is used, the tripod can reach just 8.7". The Traveler series tripod features the stability and size of a Mountaineer Series 1 tripod, to serve the high-end photographer, bird watcher, or videographer who needs an easily portable support with no compromise in performance.

The GT1542T is composed of 6x carbon fiber for structural strength and rigidity as it absorbs vibration. The redesigned G-Lock leg-locking mechanism also contributes to the tripod's rigidity, achieving a 20% increase over previous-generation technology. Moreover, as the tripod's load approaches its 17.6 lb maximum, the locking mechanism increases in strength.

G-Lock
The locking mechanism has been completely redesigned in order to achieve a 20% increase in rigidity, faster operation, and stronger, safer locking. G-Lock's special design also provides a 'gravity lock' effect: the higher the load applied vertically to the leg, the stronger the lock.
Rapid Center Column
The center-column's locking collar above the tripod chassis makes it easier to adjust the column quickly. A grooved design prevents rotation of the column and improves system stability.
Reversible Center Column
The rapid column can easily be inverted for an alternative shooting angle or low level macro work.
Ballast Hook
This built-in accessory allows you to hang a stabilizing weight (e.g. a full camera bag or a sand/water bag) from the bottom of the tripod center column. Useful with long, heavy lenses, on uneven ground, or in windy conditions.
Anti Leg Rotation
A redesigned Anti Leg Rotation system allows you to quickly open the tripod. Simply loosen all the twist locks on each leg at the same time, then pull the leg down and tighten the locks individually.

I recently moved from a Point-and-Shoot to a Nikon D7000. My cheap (<$100) tripod was clearly inadequate, and so I bought this as an upgrade. Web research, especially Thom Hogan's article on tripods and ball-heads, convinced me not to get a middle-of-the-line setup which I would be wanting to replace down the line with something better, so I decided to go for top-of-the-line. I was torn between a travel tripod and something more sturdy (e.g., Gitzo GT2540); as I usually bike to where I will be taking pictures and carry it while I'm hiking, I decided to go for a travel tripod, knowing that this might mean buying a second less-portable/more-sturdy tripod down the line. The Gitzo Traveler had received the best on-line reviews, so I decided on that. The earlier version, (GT1541T) was still available, but the GT1542T has a slightly longer center column, G-locks on the bottom legs, and better reinforced hinge points. It was also substantially cheaper than the first version on [@] (other places showed it as discontinued). So, I went with the GT1542T. I am using it with a Markins Q3T ball head with lever quick release and the Markins D7000 camera plate. The largest lens I regularly use is the Nikkor 4.5-5.6G 70-300mm VR. The weight of head, camera and lens is 13.28 oz + 24.3oz + 26.3 oz = 63.88 oz (4 lbs), and this setup, rated conservatively by Gitzo to 282 oz (17.64 lbs), has no trouble with that. Weight of tripod and head = 35.2 oz + 13.28 oz = 48.48 oz (3 lbs). I also have used it with a Sigma 50-150 (69.5 oz). While it was not as sturdy as I'm sure a heavier tripod would be, I didn't have any noticeable trouble with vibration.I am an enthusiast, and use the setup mostly for birding pictures but also do some landscape and general nature pictures. The build quality on the tripod is phenomenal. It's a gorgeous piece of equipment. The weight and size make it easy to carry on my bike, hiking, and maneuvering to get the best shot. The G-lock legs are easy to quickly loosen and tighten and I haven't seen any slippage with them. With the legs fully extended but the center column fully down, the viewfinder of my D7000 is at 52 1/4", which is too short for me. I'm 5'6", and for it to be most comfortable for me, I need to raise the center column up about 8", putting the viewfinder at 60". With the center column fully extended, the viewfinder is at 65" which would too high for me, but when I angle the camera up to look into the trees, which I often do, that lowers the viewfinder to a height that is comfortable. So, although I probably would have done fine with the shorter center column, I do use it at full length. I realize raising the center column sacrifices stability, but I decided it was worth the trade-off in size and weight and I haven't noticed any stability issues with my gear. The legs reverse-fold nicely around the Markins Q3T, but the longer center column means that either the ball head sticks out past the legs or the other end of the center column sticks out past the leg-attachment joints. I prefer to leave the other end of the center column sticking out past the leg-attachment joints so that the ball head is protected by the legs. Even so, the tripod is still amazingly portable. Folded up with the ball head, it is 20 ½ inches in length. The center column can be fully removed and the ball head mounted directly on the tripod, for weight savings, improved stability, or to use the ground-set feature (the ability to get closer to the ground with the legs at the widest setting). The center column can also be reversed and the camera mounted below to the point where the top of the camera is touching the ground.Although I don't have experience with other high-end tripod setups, I am very happy with mine. (I am also very happy with the Markins Q3T: it was easy to adjust the tension so that it allows me to adjust the camera while staying stable for the shot.)

After two uses the stopper on the end of one leg fell off and was lost. Pretty poor workmanship. Now the leg will actually get stuck inside the larger piece when folded. To make it worse, I emailed Gitzo three times and all went unreturned. I called B&H and they gave me a phone number for them. Four phone messages have gone unreturned and two more emails also. It appears I have no chance to get this fixed as they won't communicate with me [...] I hate paying premium price for a average product and below average customer service.

Comments about Gitzo GT1542T Series 1 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This is an outstanding travel tripod. It also has an easy way to remove the center column for ground level shots, like flower macro. Expensive, but worth it. Don't cheap out and get an imitation....being able to remove the center column is something I've only seen with Gitzo.

Comments about Gitzo GT1542T Series 1 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I bought the GT1452T tripod to support a Kowa TSN-663 Spotting Scope for birding. I needed something very compact and lightweight to take along on my bike or when traveling. I am totally impressed by the build quality, ease of use, stability, and compactness/lightness of this tripod. It is quick to set up, has ample height (with angled scope) and is amazingly steady for the weight. Coupled with a Gitzo 2180 Fluid Head and mounted with the mentioned Kowa scope, the whole thing weighs only about 5 1/2 lbs. Not cheap but worth it.

Comments about Gitzo GT1542T Series 1 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber Tripod:

Tripod is very light yet stiff and stable. Folds compact but there is a similar model with a shorter central column that allows it to fold around the head as well, if that matters to you (it is fine for me).

I am totally pleased with my new Gitzo GT1542T legs. It incorporates many features that I think are so user friendly. 1. It's ability to go low without requiring an extra purchase of a short column. 2. It's build, fit and stability. 3. The spring lever locks that allow leg angle adjustment. 4. Its compact size. 5. The $ rebate from Gitzo. To complete the unit I added a RRS ballhead and camera L plate for my Fujifilm XT1. It's a sweet unit.

Comments about Gitzo GT1542T Series 1 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber Tripod:

The first tripod I ordered was the Slik SL700DX. It had awesome reviews and weighted at only 7 pounds. When it arrived, I was shocked at how bulky and heavy the tripod was. I returned it without hesitation. I than ordered the Gitzo 1542T which had a $ rebate and it was everything that I had expected. Well designed, compact and portable. I use my Canon 5D Mark III to take pictures of friends and family, but always frustrated how the pictures would turn out when asking other folks to take for us. This will be the solution to that problem. Easy to setup and easy to use. Looking forward to using it more.

Comments about Gitzo GT1542T Series 1 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber Tripod:

This is a very nice tripod. I was coming from a Slik U212, an original TiltAll, and a Manfrotto 190xProB, so nothing stellar. But the Gitzo 1542T is strong and built well. It's very easy to use, and I like the leg locks. Two things that bother me a bit are 1) that the head platform unscrews a bit too easily (because of the ground level feature), and 2) the leg angle unlocks appear to be plastic (although probably a very strong resin). The carbon legs scratch a bit easily, but I was shooing in a cactus garden, so I suppose that comes with the territory. Overall, an excellent tripod.

Light weight, compact, easy to unfold, steady. What else can one ask for? It is not comparable to heavier tripods in terms of steadiness, but it can hold a D810 and 70-200 2.8G without problem. The center column can be reversed for low level shots. I am 5'6", and I need to extend the center column about half way up to shoot without having to bend down too much. I wish the legs can be adjusted to more than 2 angles, but overall the tripod is functional and useful for backing and long hikes.

Comments about Gitzo GT1542T Series 1 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I did a large amount of research before choosing this tripod. I narrowed it down to this tripod, GT2542 Mountaineering Tripod, and the GT2542S Systematic Tripod. My two main concerns were weight and stability. The mountaineering tripod would give me a slight height advantage and the systematic tripod would offer the most stability, however, these tripods would weigh 3.7 and 3.8 pounds respectively [without the head] or around 5 pounds with the head. This traveler tripod is 2.2 pounds without the head and around 3 with the head.I found myself rarely taking my previous tripod out of the hotel room when I travel because of how heavy [5 pounds] it is. I have hiked around all day with my the 5 pound tripod before and it gets heavy especially when you have other gear with you. If you have a car and weight is not an issue then I would recommend the Mountaineering or Systematic tripod, however, if you're traveling internationally, you are most likely going to be walking a lot. I have yet to travel with this tripod yet, but the extra 2 pounds I shaved off is going to make me more willing to carry it with me.I did go to B&H and looked at the tripod in the store. B&H's aisle for tripod has a laminate flooring and is not idle for testing the tripod out; the tripod did slide around. This made me research tripods further before going back to picking this tripod out. When I did receive the tripod in the mail and tried it at home and outside, the tripod didn't slide around and was pretty stable. I would like the tripod to be even lighter to compensate for the weight of the head. With the head added on, it did feel a bit heavier than I would like it to be for a travel tripod especially for the price being paid for it.Another thing I have to pick at is the folded height of the tripod. When folded, it becomes a little over 20 inches with the head attached. Unless you have a big backpack, you wouldn't be able to fit this into it. That's something I'm disappointed about. It is compact, but not as compact as I would like it to be.Carbon fiber material reduces vibrations compared to aluminum and other metals. The tripod is pretty stable and has a hook on the end of the center column for you to hang a weight or bag there to provide for extra stability. Although the traveler tripod doesn't provide as much stability compared to the other tripods, it is pretty stable for what it's worth. I was able to put my Canon 5D Mk III on top with a 24-70 lens and feel confident that the tripod won't flip over. The tripod's locks seem a little flimsy and annoying if you had to clean it out. It is definitely not element proof and seems like dirt and water can easily seep in.I would recommend the tripod, but I wouldn't consider it a perfect traveler tripod.

Comments about Gitzo GT1542T Series 1 Traveler 6x Carbon Fiber Tripod:

I researched this tripod for over a month because I was hesitant about the price even though all reviews kept pointing to the Gitzo. I thought my Manfrotto 055XPRO legs were the best of the best but I needed a compact tripod for airline carry on. And I wanted to continue using my Manfrotto Magnesium Hydrostatic Ballhead, I didn't want to invest in another ballhead. I was leary the weight difference wouldn't be significant enough for the price. Answer? Why have I been lugging around a 5 pound tripod for 6 years? Why have I been using a tripod with 3 complicated clip locks, yet I never realized those locks were complicated until I discovered the Gitzo twist legs. I made sure I used the Gitzo before writing this review. EVERY-OUNCE-COUNTS! The legs are still able to flip and compact with my Manfrotto head attached and the whole kit is still MUCH lighter and far more compact than my previous set up. Extremely lightweight, very compact, easy to set up, very durable and sturdy. My first test photos were at night at the beach and it withstood the wind with legs in the water waves crashing on it and all images tact sharp. Buy it, you won't regret it. You get what you pay for.

This tripod is very compact and light weight. I bought it for an upcoming China trip. I have been using a Gitzo 1001 aluminum tripod and this carbon tripod feels lighter and more sturdy. The legs open and pulls out smoothly. No complaints except the price!

This item is terrific for a short old lady, and I suspect for many others! I just couldn't carry my old tripod around any more. I have yet to test the limits as far as how close to the ground it can be used, but then again I can't get that close anymore, either.

This Tripod is about weight savings. The bonus is you get a sturdy tripod for the light weight. Normally it's a compromise but I'm happy it in this case it was a win win.

B&H is one of the few websites with all the specs you need to decide what tripod you want. Lightweight, compact and sturdy. What elde could you want? I coupled this with a gitzo ballhead able to hold 15lbs. It held my 1DX and 70-200mm f2 f2.8 is ii usm without issue or sag.

I have had this model for three years and loved it. So when I decided to increase my capability I didn't hesitate to get one more GT1542T. Its very light and its very strong for its weight. I've packed it in my suitcase on every trip where I wanted to travel light. Easy to set up. Great price for the capability.

This is my third Gitzo tripod. It together with the series 1 Gitzo head is about 1.5 pounds lighter and several inches shorter than my Gitzo Mountaineer series 2 which I use with the off center Gitzo ball head when weight and size are not major considerations. I've had the latter for about 20 years now and have used it on some pretty rough trips. Still no problems. My third tripod is a series one metal tripod that I got about 30 years ago. My wife uses it quite a bit. Also no problems.

I never thought I needed a tripod until I got one. This is the best purchase to elevate my photography. Great tripod, very sturdy, easy to use, and lightweight. I don't mind carrying it, which I thought I would. If I don't like a spot I'm shooting, I just pick up the tripod, camera attached, and walk and move. Done. It has really changed the type of photos I shoot, so many options with a tripod. Really glad I finally made the purchase. Holds my Nikon D600 and 80-200mm f/2.8D very easily as well as other lenses.
