  • Built-in 60 Minute Battery

The Westcott Ice Light is a dimmable, 5,200-5,400K LED source unlike any you've ever seen. The first thing that occurs to you as work with it is that it resembles a 20.25" baton or perhaps wand is more appropriate given the soft light magic that the Ice Light conjures. Hold it as close as you want to your subject; the closer you get the more Ice Light's wrap-around quality of light becomes evident. Since it's virtually heat-free you never have to worry about injuring the talent or damaging the set.

Power comes from a built-in battery that will run for 60 minutes on a 2.5 hour charge. And at 100-240V AC, you can charge it anywhere there's electricity. While the ergonomic shape easily lends to handheld operation, there's a 1/4"-20 tap at each end to mount the Ice Light to a light stand or other accessory. The Ice Light comes with gel clips, battery power/charger cord and carry case with shoulder and belt straps.

The first thing I want to say is that the early models had that battery life issue and Westcott very quickly issued replacement units. They sent me a new one with a return addressed package to return my old one it so that I didn't even have a down day. The new unit doesn't have the battery life problem. I always recommend charging one's equipment the day prior to the shoot however.

Now onto the review. When shooting subjects in window light there is no better skim or hair-light source than an Ice Light for its WYSIWYG continuous nature and the fact that it's daylight balanced. In low light and urban settings this balances well with street lights and other ambient sources. I recommend a fast aperture lens (2.8 or faster) for these applications. Get an ambient reading on the practical lighting around you then bring the ice light into play at full power first then dim if needed. When you're shooting with a 70-200 you can almost always get the ice light in 2-3 feet away which makes it large and soft for the subjects. When you're shooting wider you'll want your subjects to be at the edge of the frame so that your light source can be just out of view but still close to the subject.

The only con, which has a work around, is that at shutter speeds of faster than 125th you may start to see banding on the light similar to what you might get with fluorescent sources. It's pretty easy to just be aware and keep the shutter speed slower. Think steady portrait work with a stabilized lens. I try to shoot at 1/100 with mine.

It's light weight, quality of light, and ease of use make this a must have for creative professionals!

These are cool in that they are battery operated LED lights. But they have to be positioned VERY close to the subject because they don't put out a lot of light. With two lights at 45 degrees and 2.5 feet from my models face, I'm getting shutter speed of 1/100 at 5.6 with ISO of 1250. There is no way they are as bright as a 150w tungsten as the specs claim. Also there is no readout on the dimmer level... though I only used them cranked to the top. Repeatable results need a way to record current settings. These lights are beautifully packaged. The box has spiffy magnetic closures that you are paying for, and don't need. If these were $100 or so, I'm in. But not at $[$]. You really need a bunch of them to throw adequate light.

    Comments about Westcott Ice Light:

I mostly shoot natural light but on occasion add artificial light when needed. I'm glad that I looked into this handheld light for my artificial lighting needs. I absolutely love it for food photography. I haven't used it for portraits yet but it's worth it just for the still life shots.

        Comments about Westcott Ice Light:

I went to a camera show, which a professional photographer showed how the ice light works. After watching the photographer work the light, I can say this light has limit use and is over-priced on what you get. He showed examples of his work, using as a backlight for weddings and high-light on the face. This light only works in darker lighting situations. For the price on this light, you could buy a better light system. I decided that I didn't want to pay $ for an over-priced flash light and went to a hardware store and built my own for $ bucks. You decide if the price is worth the cost on this item.

Yes, it is expensive, and yes it is worth every penny.

Highest of quality and definitely bright enough. Unless you're trying to light a group with this (which would be silly to expect), this works great. One to three people is where it shines!

SO much more usable than the 1'X1's in my case. Easier to use, to light with, and much more "travel-able"...

                Comments about Westcott Ice Light:

After tying this product, I would have to say it does indeed provide for some great portrait possibilities that I could not have gotten as easily. But the cost is high in relation to the value it provides. Unless shooting with a fast lens at fairly close range your not going to get the results your looking for. And the battery cost is way overpriced if your looking to get a spare to assure backup power. You'd be better off buying two lights and expanding your range of uses - if your needs overpower your wallet. This was a little farther down my list of 'must have' items simply due to ny anticipated usage, and value it offered.

                  Comments about Westcott Ice Light:

We all have to admit theres some hype behind this light, and I needed a portable LED for quickness and ease.. I brought it with a little bit of "will it perform ok?" "Is the quality of light good? Is the quality ok?" Etc.

Thats a Yes, Yes and Yes! I had a shoot on yesterday and there was a break in the weather so I did some garden shots with a Family with a new hub and 2 year old.. We wanted natural outdoor shots, and got some amazing ones, using the lce light as a fill light..

The weather turned on us very quick, and pelted down rain, resorting the shoot to turn to a dimly lit undercover area, where I finished the shoot off.. The photos came up amazing!!

So much so, I'm going to order another two, as their quicker than setting up speedlights. Perfect for on the go situations!

                    Comments about Westcott Ice Light:

                    Westcott's IceLight

Just this week I was scheduled to shoot a publicity session for one of my regular clients. As I was setting up Dan said "Hey Mark, did you bring your IceLight and barn doors?" I thought to myself Huh? I had used the unit about two months prior on a different shoot, how could he even remember what lighting instrument I used? My clients seldom if EVER mention what I'm using for gear. (well except when I use my little Fuji X`100S affectionately named by my clients as Mark's Little Instamatic) More on this later...

Let me 'rewind' about one year, maybe a bit more or less. Tracy, my partner in business and life read some information about something called an IceLight and was all excited. She loves working with constant light especially since she was developing her skills in film making. As usual I was a bit hesitant about purchasing something new so I suggested we rent one to try. What I initially found was the lumens were not quite what I was accustomed to since I normally use 640ws strobes, Einsteins to be exact. She loved the unit, but of course my comment "Babe the retail on those things is the same as the retail on our Steins which we use all the time. I don't think we'd have much regular use for those, let's wait.

Later that year I was reading Gregory Heisler's book "50 Portraits" and was completely captivated by some of his work using constant light sources. So like the fool I am I announced to Tracy "Hey babe, let's try using constant light for some of our work. I think it has real application! I think it would be best to buy two. One is fine if we did this for a hobby, two would give us a lot more flexibility. " Now for anyone who has a wife, girlfriend or significant other you will completely relate to the body posture, tone and statement which was uttered through clenched teeth as a result of my spoken 'revelation.' Enough said and I've never pretended to be smart....

I've used the IceLight as a key light, fill light and when anything that flashes would just be out of the question. Case in point. I was asked to photograph Jaap van Zweden the world famous conductor for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and I was allowed to sit IN the orchestra, dead center during a rehearsal. The lights in the Meyerson Auditorium are great for viewing but absolutely horrid for photographing a conductor. Directly overhead and without any fill, Jaap's eye are completely shaded by his brow line, making his eyes appear dead and lifeless.

Some may ask themselves "Why not use a reflector?" Great question except with a conductor who MOVES passionately while conducting keeping the sweet light where you want it is impossible. Plus one MUST consider that a reflector is going to obstruct the view for some of the orchestra members who must watch the conductor. Because the form factor of the IceLight is so thin, none of those issues were a problem and made it the perfect light instrument for that job. I combined Westcott's tungsten gel and barn door with just enough of an opening to cover his movement and not obstruct the view of the violin players since the light was placed camera right, right where the concert masters sit.

I sometimes use a Fresnel 1000w spotlight with a gobo for some of my sessions. Such was the case with Laetitia, a Cirque hoop performer during an action portrait session. Again a reflector was out of the question since she's moving. I used one IceLight to fill in her face since being backlit by the Fresnel with haze rendered her face too dark without the IceLight.

There have also been times when I've used a projector on a subject to place graphics either in the scene or actually on the talent as in the case of a violinist. Due to the very low lumens afforded by a projector sending a graphic blowing out the graphics is very easy to do with a strobe or hand held flash. Only highlighting his face was my goal for this shot using a single IceLight.

What do I love about them? Portability, ease of use and slim profile. What would I change? I'd like to have the intensity setting kept in memory so when I turn the unit back on, it's in the same lumen state as when I turned it off. I've also noticed that although you can use the units plugged in, it appears that the battery is used first and then it recharges itself. So if I need to unplug the unit and use it without power I'm sunk if the battery was run low.

What do I hate? Not having two more! Is it the perfect lighting instrument? Oh hell no, but what is a perfect lighting instrument? Is it perfect for the right application? Absolutely!

I said at the beginning of this article that Dan remembered the IceLight which in and of itself was remarkable. But what was more striking is his memory of how the image I created looked using an IceLight. I really think he just wants one for his own iPhone shots! Hahahaha

Love it. I love the shape and the case. I wish that the battery lasted longer and that it could go a bit brighter to use at receptions...but the light is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! I love it for close up portraits

Great for wedding photography. Works great for detail shots. Also great for high Iso shots of the Bride and groom. Its not super powerful but works very well for the things I listed above and that is what I purchased it for.

I never leave reviews, but wanted to for this product because if you're having any reservation about it - just pull the trigger. I'm a wedding photographer and use it for reception details, ring shots, portraits, etc. It's a part of my bag now and I can't imagine not having it. Awesome light and truly worth the cost.

I use the product as a close light source and it has a nice feather-edge to it. The quality of the color of light is good, no strange color cast. It's easy to hold and manipulate and has 1/4-20 threaded sockets on both ends for attaching a mounting peg.

If I could change one thing, I'd give it a longer-lasting battery. A few more ounces for another couple hours of light would be helpful.

I replaced a V-mount LED light with an Ice Light many months ago and I would never go back. Along with a small Manfrotto light stand, the Ice Light goes everywhere with me, and most of the time serves as my only interview light. The downsides are that it can't battle daylight, and you most definitely need the extra battery. But if you're considering it at all, just get it.
