B+W 58mm Close-up +5 Lens (NL5)

Product Highlights
  • Decrease Minimum Focus Distance
  • +5 Diopter Lens
  • Rugged Black Brass Filter Ring
  • Single Anti-Reflection Coating
  • High-Quality Schott Glass

The B+W 58mm Close-up +5 Lens (NL5) is a close-up diopter lens which allows you to decrease the minimum focus distance on any lens, in turn increasing the effective maximum reproduction ratio of your lens. Additionally, you can combine close-up lenses to increase their strength and to fine tune your close-up settings.

With a +5 diopter, the NL 5 serves for the seamless extension of the range provided by the NL 3 close-up lens on a 35mm main lens (up to approx. 1:3.5). If you can tolerate a small gap after the NL2 close-up lens on a 50mm main lens (approx. 1:4.4-1:4), then you enter a little farther into the macro range with the NL 5 instead of the NL 4 (up to approx. 1:2.6).

B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter has a single anti-reflective coating, which helps to improve light transmission to over 98% while preventing internal reflections and ghosting. Additionally, it features a brass filter ring for increased durability as well as jamming prevention.

This filter decreases the minimum focus distance of any lens, providing macro-like results.
The maximum magnification achieved with these attachments will depend on the focal length of your lens as well as the actual close focusing capability of that particular lens
Single anti-reflective coating helps increase light transmission to over 98% while reducing reflections, flare, and ghosting.

              Comments about B+W 58mm Close-up +5 Lens (NL5):

I use this with a 55-300mm zoom lens.
at 300mm, the edges are very blurry and not usable.
At 55mm, the image is sharp across the entire frame.
The depth of field is very narrow, (even moving the focus ring on my lens, I can only move a few centimeters in/out from subject, so basically you only get one size of zoom magnification. If you want different sizes, you need to buy more close up lenses (not move closer or further).

Case is too large, lens only uses 2/3 of width of foam cutout, so it bounces around inside the big case (seems like B+ W believes one-size-case fits all filters).

Overall, I'm happy with the quality of the lens, with its limitations.

came with a box, easy to put on and off, the result is really cool with blurry background. use it for flowers, textures, shapes. why is it 4 stars because its kind of heavy for a carpal tunnel hand like mine.

I bought this to "help" my Canon G1X with macro shots, and I found it produces good results for not much money. Compact as well, so it easily fits in my camera case. Attached is a non-cropped picture of a peonie flower I took with this lens attached.

                    Comments about B+W 58mm Close-up +5 Lens (NL5):

I use this filter on my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens, which has a focal distance of about a foot and a half, but with this filter I can focus just a few inches away. It's very easy to use and produces great images. The only flaw is that the pictures aren't very sharp. If you like a soft focus, it's okay, but if you don't, it's easy to sharpen the pictures in post-editing. It also sometimes takes a while to get the focus right, but that's proably because I just got it and haven't used it too much and need more practice (especially with f/1.8 - f/2).

I would strongly recommend it; it's pretty great, especially for the price. :)

                      Comments about B+W 58mm Close-up +5 Lens (NL5):

I first used this lens a few days ago to photograph some Oregon grape leaves (approx 1" x 3") with great fall color. I used a tripod and a Nikon D5100 with Nikkor 55-300 lens set at 92 mm focal length and f11. Even when expanded to fill the 21" monitor of my Mac, the images were exceptionally sharp in the middle, but had significantly less clarity around the edges. Some of that probably resulted from the slight concavity of the leaves, and some from the optics of single-element close-up lenses such as this one. Depending on the effect you're looking for, that's not necessarily bad. If you want the entire subject to be in sharp focus, then this lens probably would be best shooting something very small that occupies only the center of the image.I used manual focus, which was quite manageable, particularly because the camera allows you to use the autofocus mechanism to tell you when you have achieved sharp focus manually.

I'm a lazy photographer who doesn't like to take time swapping out filters, but taking the time to put on this filter when taking up close photos was well worth the extra minute. Using this filter turned my normal lens into a macro and I was so pleased at the results.

The B&W +5 close up filter is very well made, especially given its low price. I use it on a 50mm f1.8 afs Nikon with a d3100. It is extremely clear. I have had more fun with this set up than should be allowed! Focusing is not as close as other lenses but is still close enough for insects, flowers and the like. It is a challenge. You will not go wrong with this filter!

The lens seems to be fine. I didn't notice any degree of distortion. It says it was made in Germany which is cool.

                                      Comments about B+W 58mm Close-up +5 Lens (NL5):

For what it is the B+W +5 Close-up Lens works great on my Sigma 105mm macro lens. Results are clear and pretty sharp, and magnification is noticably >1:1. minimum focusing distance is ~4". Not bad at all. Works as well on my other Pentax / Sigma SLR lenses. A great option for some applications. However, when I try it on my Fuji HS10 mega-zoom "all-in-one" camera - not so good! The HS10 won't autofocus. If you focus manually either the center is focused or the outside is focused. You can't get both.

This filter is great for someone who cant afford a macro lense but wants to get really close. If you have a macro lense even better for you.
