The AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Sony A Mount by Tokina is an ultra-wide angle autofocus zoom lens with a fast constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. The AT-X 116 PRO DX-II lens is designed for digital cameras with APS-C-size CMOS or CCD sensors. Its angle of view ranges from 104-84° and it can focus as close as 11.8". Nine diaphragm blades help to produce soft out-of-focus backgrounds while two Super-Low Dispersion glass elements and two aspheric elements help to achieve excellent contrast, sharpness and minimal chromatic aberration. As an update to their AT-X 116 PRO DX, Tokina has improved the multi-layer coatings to minimize light reflection and improve optical performance. The PRO DX-II has a internal focusing motor which is ideal if shooting video with your digital camera.

Tokina's One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between autofocus and manual focus with a simple push of the focus ring. Snapping it forward into autofocus and back into manual focus is all that needs be done, there's no need to adjust the AF/MF switch on the camera body.

A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light situations and also aids in creating a shallow depth of field.
An internal focusing motor allows for smoother focus transitions and is ideal for shooting video with your digital camera.
Two Super-Low Dispersion glass elements and two aspheric elements, as well as improved multi-coating, achieve excellent sharpness and contrast and reduce aberrations.
The One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism offers a simple switch from manual focus to autofocus and back again. The focus ring snaps forward for AF and back for MF. It's operable with one hand and eliminates the need to switch from AF to MF on the camera body.

        Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Sony A Mount:

Face it, this lens does not have the speed, glass nor aperture blade quality of my SONY lenses. But I wanted a very good lens for group portraits and certain well lit urban scenes, where speed isn't my greatest concern. This lens gets the job done, and it saved me a lot of money.Great: excellent price/quality ratioNot so Great: slower focusing; awkward auto-manual focusing mechanism that will shorten the life of the lens

Mounted on a Sony A65. Great for indoor and outdoor shots. The low aperture have been good for tight family shots inside, and it gives a fairly good bokeh outdoors when taking pictures of people with landscapes. This review is based on a few hundred pictures over the past couple weeks, so I may start to find problems, but otherwise I'm pleased with the lens thus far.

            Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Sony A Mount:

I bought this to extend my wide-angle range beyond my 16-50mm Sony, so, clearly the focal length range was a perfect fit.

The lens is built like a tank, and I like that! It's great to have an affordable lens that at least feels as though it's built to last. People who complain about the size and weight of a fast, quality lens really aren't paying attention to optical design realities.

This isn't my first lens that transitions between manual and auto focus by sliding the focus ring, so I don't find that objectionable at all.

I typically shoot at between f/8 and f/11, and it's extremely sharp in that range. I went for the f/2.8 mostly to brighten the viewfinder, but I'm also looking forward to using it off the tripod in lower light situations... just haven't had many opportunities yet.

Whether they actually reduce flare or not, I'm a fan of keeping lens hoods on place, especially with large front elements, as they do help keep errant fingers and other objects off the lens. The included hood is hefty and locks on positively, though it does (it can't NOT) take up a lot of extra room in a camera bag.

The complaints about its AF response are valid, especially if using an off-axis focus point. I don't know if that's a product of this focal length range or specific to this lens. So far, this hasn't been a big issue, as I focus manually most of the time, but I can see how it could get to be annoying. This is the only reason that I left off the 5th star.

I purchased this lens to explore the world of super wide. So far, it is fun to use and superb quality. The only reason for less than 5 stars is that it is really big and heavy. For my purposes, an f/5.6 or even slower, smaller lens of similar quality would do very nicely. I really don't need the speed with a camera body (Sony alpha 65) that can do blindingly high exposure numbers.

              Comments about Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 Lens for Sony A Mount:

The only thing I don't like about this lens is the AF/MF clutch system. There is no auto focus motor on the Sony version. It's a screw drive lens but they have this "clutch" system to switch between AF and MF. But because it is screw driven from the body, you can't manually focus the lens unless you also switch the AF/MF switch on the body. If you decide to leave the lens in MF and put the body in AF, it will focus, but the focus ring will turn, so you can't be touching it. It just seems like a silly design. If the lens had it's own AF motor like it does for other mounts, then this would be five stars. As it is, it's only 4.

Good flare control for a wide-angle lens.

The attached photos are straight out of the camera. In the first you can see how the lens reacts when shooting into the sun or a strong light source. With wide-angle lenses, it is more difficult to keep the light sources out of the angle of view. In the second you see a nearly 8 minute exposure of the night sky during a full moon.

And yes, I need to clean my sensor. It's a bit dusty.

                    - strong chromatic abberations
                    - FOCUSING PROBLEM

like many reviews show; the auto focus is very weak and very often fails completely.

I bought this lens to use for night photography, specifically aurora photography. I have only had it a week or so, and have not had too much aurora activity here in Anchorage yet! However, I did try some new years eve shooting and the photos were clear and nicely focused. I use this on a Sony A700. I am having to get used to some of the AF/MF settings on this lens but am very happy with it so far. The infinity mark is spot on! It is solid. I gave it four stars because of the AF/MF settings - perhaps it should be 5 stars, and it is my own learning curve that is the difficulty!
