The Synology DS214+ comes with a dual core CPU complete with a built-in floating-point unit, 1GB DDR3 RAM, dual LAN ports, SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and the tool-less drive trays for enhanced overall system performance. The built-in floating-point unit enhances the overall capability of the main CPU to enable higher working efficiency. With RAM twice the size of its predecessor, the DS214+ also exhibits a boost in multi-tasking performance. Under link aggregation, the DS214+ delivers over 153MB/s write speeds under RAID 1 configuration on a Windows environment, and over 208MB/s read speed.
Cross Platform File Sharing and Mobile Access
Take advantage of seamless file sharing across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Windows ADS and LDAP integration allows the Synology DS214+ to quickly and easily fit in an existing business network environment with no need to recreate user accounts. Windows ACL support provides a much finer-grained access control and efficient privilege settings, allowing users to enjoy a native Windows experience.

Internet file access is simplified by the encrypted FTP server and the web-based File Station. HTTPS, the built-in firewall, and IP auto-block support ensure file sharing over the Internet is protected at a high security level. For users who are always on the move, Synology provides a handy app, DS file, for mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Phone. Anything stored on the Synology DS214+ can now be accessed remotely using DS file.
Rich Office Applications
The Synology DS214+ runs on the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), which offers comprehensive applications and features designed specifically for office and business workgroups.

Cloud Station allows users to sync files among multiple devices, including Windows PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android tablets or phones, keeping everything up to date. The Mail Server package turns the Synology DS214+ into a dedicated mail service provider, while Mail Station, provides a webmail interface for users to access emails stored on Synology DS214+.

The VPN Server package offers an easy VPN solution that turns the Synology DS214+ into a VPN server, providing a secure way of connecting to a private LAN at a remote location. RADIUS Server strengthens network security by overseeing wireless access authentication via RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In Service) networking protocol.

As to environment security, Synology Surveillance Station offers a centralized interface to manage IP cameras deployed in your office or home, allowing users traveling miles away to safeguard the environment by watching live views, recording events, and taking snapshots with a computer or iOS/Android device.
Effective Backup Solutions
Synology DS214+ offers a centralized backup target to consolidate fragmented and unstructured data across a network. PC users can back up their data to Synology DS214+ using Synology Data Replicator software, while Mac OS X users benefit from native Apple Time Machine integration.

A backup wizard is provided for backing up data from the DS214+ to another Synology DiskStation or any rsync server via an encrypted connection, or to an external hard drive via USB 3.0 or eSATA connection. The wizard also makes it easy to back up DiskStation data to the cloud via Amazon S3 or Glacier cloud service. In addition, users can back up and restore DiskStation shared folders in multiple versions using Synology Time Backup package.

Shared Folder Sync allows users to synchronize a specific folder from Synology DS214+ to another DiskStation- a server-to-client backup mechanism that takes place whenever something is changed on the server side. Users will be able to share documents locally with a seamless and safe encrypted connection. When your DiskStation is down, you will be able to have an immediate backup running in no time.
Energy Efficient with Cool and Quiet Design
The Synology DS214+ is designed with energy efficiency in mind. Not only does it provide a 92 x 92 mm fan and the smart airflow feature to keep the enclosure running cool 24/7, its noise dampening design makes it really quiet compared to PC counterparts. The support of multiple scheduled power on/off and System Hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operational costs.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214+ 2-Bay Diskless NAS Server:

Just started using this to pack-up my music, pictures, and files. After a recent issue with my computer's hard drive and almost losing everything I released I needed an easy convenient way to back up my stuff. This was so easy to setup. I would recommend it to anyone.

This is to be used to back-up my files on a Linux PC. It was very easy to install the (2.5") disc drives and get it up and running. Things were a little bit more complex doing everything from Linux via the built-in web server to set-up NFS, but it is all working well now (even with disc drives that are not on the "Recommended" list) :-)

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214+ 2-Bay Diskless NAS Server:

The Synology DS214+ is a good machine that essentially seems to be doing what it is designed to do. When you open up the box after receiving it in the mail, you will note that does not have a detailed book or brochure to help you install the machine. In fact, the installation manual is composed primarily with pictures. Fortunately, you can go to the Synology website to find out how to install the physical drives (2) and what you need to know to install the basic software that makes the box work. My installation went well with a serious lag in the time it takes to format the 4 TB drives purchased from B + H (it took about ten hours). The only glitch in the machine so far has been a problem with the Kaspersky Anti-Virus software that interferes with commands to set partitions on the drives for the use of clients that will interact with the NAS on the internet. The solution is to inactivate Kaspersky everytime you want to do this type of maintenance on the NAS. I have so far set up a number of users and partitions on the drive and backed up my PC without any difficulty. I would like to work with the NAS to establish it as a multimedia center plus a surveillance center, but that will not happen for another couple of weeks when time allows.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214+ 2-Bay Diskless NAS Server:

This is a great product! Easy to setup and get running, it provides a usable solution to access everything from photos to audio to important documents from anywhere. It is particularly fast on LAN and slow (but not unexpected) for remote access. The remote access speeds also depend on whether or not you elect to use SSL, which I use. The security of taking your important files off of third party cloud providers is priceless. The GUI is simple and relatively intuitive, although it can be improved a bit. The overall cost of the product with the dual drives is a bit steep, but if you use this product for 5+ years, then I think the value is well worth it.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214+ 2-Bay Diskless NAS Server:

Over years we have accumulated plenty digital photos and videos. The file transfer between PC and newly added MBP retina was painful as we discovered. This prompted us to look at NAS. After research we decided to get 214+ over 214play given our primary usage (file / photo sharing and backup). We also picked up a pair of 4TB WD red from B&H. We had an old WD 1TB external hard drive attached to 214+ as the backup using eSATA. As many have commented, the legacy DSM firmware is intuitive and easy to manage. 214+ recognized the Cyberpower UPS quickly via USB and had nice configurable shut-down options to choose from. Set up was easy and the file access / sharing between PC and MAC no longer a painful experience. File transfer speed has a lot to do with the network and client (As result, router was upgraded to ASUS 68u) and quite satisfactory to my work flow. Remote access via http is nice (don't expect same speed as in the intranet). DSM has a lot of feature and we especially like the DS Photo+, which make accessing the photos on various tablet and mobile device an easy and pleasant task. Once the folder is added and photos are uploaded, the 214+ will run the conversion in the background. The colors and contract rendering on ipad is very high quality and we turned our ipad into a picture frame playing the slide shows. On iphone the DS photo+ replay will be slower via data network (loading circle will appear if flipping through photos too quickly). Overall this NAS has added a lot of accessibility and sharing capability to our growing data needs. The material, build and firmware design are of top notch quality. The unit runs very cool and quietly and feels like will last for a long time 24-7. Highly recommended.

This is the real McCoy, don't bother with Western Digital or Iomega, if you want trouble free operation and reliability.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214+ 2-Bay Diskless NAS Server:

I use a NAS as a file server in my home to allow the family to access all files from multiple computers. We do a certain amount of music streaming as well. Our environment is Win7, Win8, Mac OSX, and handhelds. I also use it for Apple's Time Machine backup. The mirrored disk RAID is critical to me for protection of household assets against a single disk failure. For 5 years I had a NAS (different brand), which worked okay, but was sluggish and the management interface was looking somewhat old. When that NAS lost a disk I did a quick but thorough search of 2-bay NAS products and found Synology well-recommended. So far, a week in, I like it.It was easy to set up both hardware and software. In fact, scary easy to get on my network and running. File access is fast from all my clients. I'm streaming both to iTunes and DLNA devices -- those servers work great. Most of the management interface is pretty intuitive, but only if you have some knowledge of the jargon. I'm still not sure that I'm backing up the NAS to an external USB3 disk correctly. But it is a fast backup! The DS214+ is also very quiet.Synology's documentation is pretty good, but a lot of it is through search results on their website. The problem is that I often get results for earlier versions of their OS (current is DSM 5.x). Some DSM 2, 3, and 4 results look good until you try to follow them and find the interface different. There is a lot of function here to configure this unit as your own personal "cloud", allowing you to access your home files, music, and pictures from anywhere with an internet connection. It looks rich, but I've not tried any of it yet. My main purpose in purchasing the DS214+ is for my in-home local network.Get good NAS drives to run with this NAS, not desktop drives. For 10-20% more cost you get a drive built to coexist in a small cabinet, run extended hours, and has a lower failure rate. (That's probably why my old desktop drive failed.)

I've updated to DSM 5 which looks very nice.

Comments about Synology DiskStation DS214+ 2-Bay Diskless NAS Server:

After some research, I bought the Synology DS214+ to serve music for the Sonos Bridge and Connect I just bought. Though there were almost no instructions in/on the package, I was able to set up the NAS using Synology's website. Loading the NAS with content was easy. I did it using the USB port on the DS214+ and over the network. Both were pretty fast- a minute or two for a few hundred GB. I have had no problems with the NAS in the month or so I've had it. The NAS and the Sonos units work together seamlessly.

I bought the DS214+ bundle with two 3GB WD hard drives. I was hoping that this would guarantee compatibility (and I think I did).

First time I bought a NAS and this device has not let me down. It is very easy to setup and intuitive. Currently have my time machine with a shared folder that is setup with a quota to prevent the program to use up all of my space on the NAS. I also have my pictures and music in separate shared folders so I can access remotely and on my other media devices. One of the best investments I've made!

Well worth the investment. All my pics are safe and reasonably quick to pull from Lightroom. Its smaller than I thought and quiet.

I use the link aggregation and have the 7200 rpm barracuda installed.
