The Zacuto Blackmagic Pocket Camera Z-Finder 2x is an optical viewfinder designed specifically for use with the LCD screen on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. The Z-Finder uses 2x magnification to turn the camera's 3.5" LCD screen into a clear, easy-to-focus viewfinder that lets you see your image in magnified detail. Thanks to the light-proof eyecup it also provides added stability to your handheld footage by adding a point-of-contact between the camera and your eye.

The Blackmagic Pocket Camera Z-Finder features a redesigned optics system which which allows you to apply optical correction depending on your eyesight. The system uses a set of four diopters (0, +1, +2, and +3), and an additional -1 and +4 diopter can be purchased separately. Coated on all the diopters is Zacuto's improved anti-fog formula to prevent fog from forming on your viewfinder. The 0 diopter gives you fog protection without adding optical correction.

In order to attach the Z-Finder to Your Pocket Cinema Camera, the Zacuto adhesive frame must be placed around the LCD screen. Once in place, the Z-Finder will pop on and off the frame for quick shooting. When not in use, the Z-Finder can hang around your neck using the included lanyard. Also included in a convenient carry pouch and a newly designed sun mask to reduce the risk of sun damage to your camera's LCD screen.

Note: The Z-Finder is a magnifier and as such will magnify the sun which can damage the LCD screen if the sun is allowed to shine directly through the Z-finder lens. Use the enclosed lens cap to block light from entering your Z-finder when not in use.

I recently got the BMPCC which has a not so great LCD screen to monitor your shoots. The alternative was to get an expensive EVF or a small LCD monitor. AS of now either option "may" not work due to the 10Bit 4:2:2 output the Pocket Camera has. In fact I do have a a Sony Monitor that refuses to play with the BMPCC. After much research for an EVF or an LCDVF, I decide to go with the Zacuto zFinder, and it works great. The finder as the other Zacuto products is solid, well made, the diopters are right on the money and it fits the camera like it is part of it. Indeed the not so great monitor from the BMPCC has become magnificent. If you get a BMPCC you need the Z Finder, its a must.

What you think about this viewfinder will perhaps depend on whether you have used a cine camera with a proper viewfinder and whether you believe that good pictures can be taken with a camera held at arms length. The problem with many cameras such as DSLRs and the Blackmagic design cameras is that they have relatively huge viewfinders which are perfectly suited to the undemanding applications of a television studio camera but which are singularly unsuited for every other application, such as filming in daylight, filming at anything other than convenient operating height, hand-holding etc.The viewfinders themselves are a bad substitute for a proper ground glass. They are noisy, low resolution (compared with a ground glass) and don't allow critical focussing like a ground glass. They don't show additional area like a ground glass so the operator can watch for booms and assistant directors on the edge of frame. Most of all, the large size of the viewfinder means the operator can't see the whole image without excessive eye movement. This makes framing on the move and assessing the image as a whole almost impossible.Because of this, you need to either attach something like the Z-Finder or use an external video monitor, most of which have exactly the same drawbacks as the original monitor. The Z-Finder is fairly short and does not have an adjustable eyepiece dioptre. It comes with a set of three interchangeable dioptres from +1 to +3. I have no problem focussing a Varavon viewfinder on a D800 but I cannot get the Z-Finder to focus with any of the supplied lenses. With the strongest of the supplied dioptres, the magnification is so high that you need to move your head around quite a lot to see the extents of the frame which compromises accurate camera operation. The Z-Finder mounts to the BMPCC with a stick-on frame. No doubt someone will pick up the camera by the viewfinder… it's way bigger than the camera body… and the camera will drop off. I don't know how easy it will be to remove the frame and if it does come off, will it remove that nice velvety paint on the BMPCC… the same as they use on Audis which goes soft and comes off after a few months. I don't know why a Varavon type base could not be provided at the price.Maybe you can't expect a proper viewfinder on a $ camera like one on an Aaton or Alexa but as an alternative, this is pretty wretched.

This piece of equipment is essential for the BMPCC. It allows your to use the camera hand held with great results due to the added point of contact and the stability that it offers the shooter. it also aids in the visibility of the lcd display when outside or in a bright shooting environment.

Comments about Zacuto Blackmagic Pocket Camera Z-Finder 2x:

This is by far the best accessory for the black magic pocket cinema camera period. With this you can shoot in bright sunlight and focus easy. You can also turn the brightness down on your view finder to extend the battery life. Very easy to install on to the Camera and with the included diopters adjustment to specific eyes is very easy to do.

Comments about Zacuto Blackmagic Pocket Camera Z-Finder 2x:

Use your common sense and try this handy well fitting little gem. No it isn't an EFV and unlike many EFV units it doesn't cost more than the intended camera itself. The best news about the Z-Finder for the BMPCC is it makes a viewfinder that is dismal at best in bright sunlight and allows it to become functional. the plastic is sturdy, fit and finish are good. The diopters are included in the price. lastly If you want attention buy the EFV and the equipment that follows. if you follow the KISS principle and keep things to a minimum then this product is probably what you have been looking for.

The Z-finder 2X is well built and works well, but I think it is a little overpriced. I'm not one to skimp on price either, I almost always buy top quality gear. The cap for the eyepiece could be better designed as well, it isn't the easiest thing to install and it tends to pop off.

Comments about Zacuto Blackmagic Pocket Camera Z-Finder 2x:

I've been using this product as a viewfinder on the back of my BMPCC, primarily in outdoor or bright situations. It's a must have for critical focus and exposure using the built in screen.

Personally, I couldn't turn down this product down because it was priced right. I've also owned a Z-Finder EVF and I just love the ability to get your eyes submerged into the image you are capturing. It also helps to imagine how your audience will see your image because it's like your placing your eye up to the projection booth window in a movie theater.

I don't like how you have to be careful about the sun shining through, but luckily Zacuto has made improvement with their sunshade. It's not nearly as dangerous as when the Z-Finders were released years ago.

Comments about Zacuto Blackmagic Pocket Camera Z-Finder 2x:

Major improvement in usability of the viewfinder during sunny days.

It was very easy to apply the stick on frame.

Instructions did not make it clear that one of the two included frames (one spare) is already attached to the viewfinder.

Easy to snap on and off as needed. This could have been a concern but it's very durable.

Changing the diopter is simple but you need a small "computer/electronics" philips screwdriver. It may require several switches to find out which diopter works best for one's eyes if one needs a diopter. There's no envelope for the "0" diopter if you remove it and it can create confusion if you place it in one of the hand labeled envelopes. I wish the diopter holders were something sturdier that small envelopes, had real labels, had one for the 0 diopter when swapped.

The 2x magnification is good. Competing products may user greater magnification which would be a problem given the low resolution of the BMPCC screen. 2x idea.

Lanyard is a bit tricky to thread to the viewfinder.

At the time I write this, Zacuto didn't seem to have a PDF version of the instructions for this viewfinder online.

Overall excellent device but user guide and packaging could use improvement.

Just a great addition to the BMPCC. Zacuto pulled through and found a way to mount the finder, using 3M adhesive, and the hold is solid. It can be removed and replaced many times before the adhesive loses it's stickiness and a replacement is already included. But once it's on, you won't take it off. It really helps for stabilization. It is a must have addition to the BMPCC kit.

The pocket camera has some great features on its screen. Focus peaking, zebras and the ability to display video mode while recording in film mode. The zfinder makes these features usable outdoors while adding stability. Highly recommended

Works as advertised. The screen looks pretty bad, but that's to the Z-Finder's fault. Easy to install and easy to live with.

Finally the product is in the market. Anyone who has a pocket camera needs the Z-finder. The quality of the product is quite good. Snugs on the Pocket camera tight and everything comes to focus. This is my first Zacuto product and now i understand why people praise them. Good quality and very useful tool. Get it.

Comments about Zacuto Blackmagic Pocket Camera Z-Finder 2x:

I love my Blackmagic Pocket Camera, even though it ended up costing me twice as much with all the stuff I needed to make it "just right." It turns out, the least expensive required add-on is this viewfinder.
We took our daughter to Disney last month and there was no way I could see the screen in the sun, so I had to guess-and-crop for many of the outdoor shots. As soon as we got home, I purchased the Zacuto Blackmagic Pocket Camera Z-Finder 2x. I knew very little about Zacuto but purchased it because it included a few diopters. It works great. This is not cheep feeling , even though it is VERY light. Solid, well made, and fits perfectly. I was so impressed with the design and build of this, I went right to their website to see what else they make that I "need."
If I was forced to find a problem, it is trying to get the lanyard through the opening. That was a PAIN, but not enough of an issue to lower my rating.
