The compact Sony HDR-AS100VR POV Action Cam + Live-View Remote Bundle is designed for point-of-view (POV) shooting during action sports including skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, motocross, skydiving, mountain biking and other outdoor adventure sports. It supports up to Full HD 1080/60p XAVC S video at 50 Mbps. It also supports other shooting modes including multiple slow motion modes. You can shoot 1280 x 720p slow motion video at 100 or 120 fps, and 800 x 480 slow motion video at 200 or 240 fps. The camera can also capture 13.5MP still images when using the photo mode.

The HDR-AS100VR features built-in Wi-Fi with One Touch NFC pairing capability. This means that Wi-Fi and NFC enabled smartphones and tablets can pull optimized movies and photos from the HDR-AS100VR without a cable. Once the video is copied onto your mobile device, you can use its 3G or 4G mobile broadband connection to email movies to friends and family or upload your footage to social media sites like Facebook and YouTube. The HDR-AS100VR also features built-in GPS, which allows you to add a geographical narrative to your movies and photos. Plus, Sony's Live-View Remote is included so you can operate and monitor up to five HDR-AS100VR Action Cam's remotely.

Sony includes a ruggedized waterproof housing with the HDR-AS100VR. For added convenience, the waterproof housing has a universal tripod mount. Plus, the camera body includes a tripod mount accessory and it is splash proof as well. The camera's housing is waterproof down to a depth of 16.4' and shockproof from falls up to 5'. The camera is also dirt and dust resistant, which makes it nearly impervious to mud, snow, rain, sand and grime. The HDR-AS100VR is equipped with a 170° ultra-wide angle ZEISS Tessar lens and a back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS image sensor as well.

Other convenient features on the HDR-AS100VR include HDMI connectivity and a built-in stereo microphone for capturing high-quality audio. It's outfitted with a memory card slot that supports Memory Stick Micro cards and microSD/SDHC cards (a class 10 or higher microSDXC card is required to record XAVC S). The card slot supports expandable external memory for virtually endless recording. To compensate for camera shake that's typical when shooting POV sports action, the HDR-AS100VR even features SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode.

SteadyShot Image Stabilization with Active Mode
SteadyShot image stabilization allows smooth image shooting while the user is in motion. With the HDR-AS100VR Action Cam, the image stabilizer digitally compensates for minute rapid vibrations that are typically caused by bicycle/motorcycle motion.
Splash Proof Body
The HDR-AS100VR Action Cam was built with an improved splash proof body (IPX4-class). Enjoy carefree use of the camera outside of its included housing - even in rainy weather or splash-prone situations. With a universal tripod screw mount accessory included for the HDR-AS100VR Action Cam itself, you can easily attach the camera directly to a tripod.
Wi-Fi Connectivity for Control and Streaming
The Wi-Fi link allows you to:
  • Control the camera and monitor a video feed from a mobile device
  • Control and monitor up to five cameras using a single, separately available RMT-VR1 Live View Remote
  • Stream live to the U-Stream website when tethered to a device that has an Internet connection
  • Pair the camera with an NFC-enabled mobile device simply by tapping the two together
Shoot Pro-Quality XAVC S 60p (50 Mbps) Video
Pro-quality XAVC S Full HD 1080p recording with a high 50 Mbps bit-rate enables the HDR-AS100V to capture quick action with smooth image motion. The HDR-AS100VR also supports 24p high-speed 120 fps and 240 fps shooting with sound. Additionally, users can shoot video in the easily shareable MP4 HD format, which is ideal for the web.
Motion Shot LE Mode
Allows you to capture traces of a moving subject in one image so that it appears to be a continuous picture.
Burst Shooting and Self-Timer
Shoot busts of still photos at up to 10 fps. You can set a timer with a delay of 2 or 10 seconds before the camera starts taking photos.
Plot Location & Display Telemetry with Built-In GPS
Built-in GPS can be used in conjunction with the included PlayMemories Home software to make viewing and sharing videos fun and easy. Location and trail information, as well as speed information, add more layers for analyzing your performance. Location, trail and speed info can even be displayed on your video.
Built-In Stereo Microphone for Quality Sound Recording
The HDR-AS100VR Action Cam's built-in stereo microphone allows you to capture all the exciting sounds of your adventure.
Exmor R CMOS Image Sensor
Experience enhanced low-light sensitivity thanks to improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain with Sony's back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor.
Ultra-Wide 170° Pro-Quality ZEISS Tessar Lens
With an ultra-wide angle ZEISS Tessar lens, you can increase your perspective thanks to a 170° viewing angle while you venture out and capture views of dynamic terrain including ski slopes, mountain trails, and more.
Capture 13.5MP Still Images in Photo Mode
Put your HDR-AS100VR Action Cam in photo mode and capture high-quality 13.5MP still images with a single press of the button.
Memory Stick Micro & MicroSD/SDHC Compatible

I give the camera five stars, but the LV Remote only one star.

I've used the GoPro Hero 3+ Black and wanted something better. The AS100V Action Camera is better in just about every way: much better battery life; better picture quality; but most of all, it includes motion stabilization. This is extremely important for an action camera, and not just for the obvious reason that it makes the video more stable. Even more important is that all action cameras have a "rolling shutter" and this can cause vertical structures to "lean" back and forth as the camera moves, and can introduce the dreaded "jello effect" if you use the camera on a motorcycle or other vehicle that vibrates. While some of this can be removed in post production using Mercalli, or similar stabilizer, the better way is to not allow the shake or shimmy to be recorded in the first place.

This camera's motion stabilization does just that, and it works very well.

I found both the enclosure and the mounts much easier to use than those that come with the GoPro.

The menu organization and function is very similar to the GoPro.

The only downside I see to this camera compared to the GoPro is that it doesn't have as much third-party support. So, if you want to control the camera through the expansion connector, like you can do with the GoPro, you won't be able to do that. As a result, this Sony camera would not be a good choice if you want the camera to be part of some larger, custom image capture system.

So, except for those small caveats, the camera is really good.

      However ...

The "Live View Remote" is an absolutely terrible product. Save yourself some money and instead get just the bare camera, without this viewer. Use a smartphone, or some other device instead.

What is wrong with the viewer?

      1. You can't see it in sunlight. Let me repeat that: you cannot see anything in the display when viewed in direct sunlight, or even bright shade. The attached picture shows the problem (and yes, the viewfinder IS turned on in the outdoor picture). This flaw pretty much makes the LiveView Remote not fit for its intended purpose. If you want to use the viewfinder to help frame the picture while you are filming outdoors in full sunshine, you simply will not be able to do that.

      2. You can't easily get it onto your arm. The wrist band strap must be completely opened in order to get it over your hand, if you happen to have large hands. If you are a man, and are over 5' 11", you will not be able to get it over your hand. You can, however, completely un-do the strap, and then attempt to get the velcro back through the opening of the buckle, using just one hand. However, because the end of the velcro strap is doubled over and therefore barely fits through the hole, I found that even after several tries, this took over one minute each time I wanted to use the view finder. I have a few old watches that have old-fashioned leather straps that you have to put on in this way, but on those watches, the leather end easily slips into the buckle.

      3. You can't see the video on your wrist without putting your arm at a strange angle. To see what I mean, try this: if you wear a watch on one arm, hold a camera with the hand on your other arm, and then, while filming, hold the arm with the watch so you can read the time. Now imagine having to hold your watch-hand in that position while filming for a few minutes. Not pleasant, eh? The mounting for the viewer should have included ways to mount it at an angle to your wrist, or to wear it on other parts of your body, or to allow the video to be shown in portrait mode as well as landscape. Even if your are wearing the camera (e.g., on a helmet), the "watch reading" approach to viewing the video is awkward.

So, while the "Dick Tracy 2-Way TV" is initially appealing, for those of us old enough to remember that comic strip, it is actually a lousy way to view video while simultaneously participating in some sort of activity.

      4. You cannot play back recorded video!! Yes, that's right, you cannot review anything that you have recorded. This is actually quite unbelievable. So, you cannot use this to edit and delete your videos, from within the camera.

      5. The range of the Live View Remote is less than ten feet. You will see this mentioned in other reviews. I tried it indoors, and as soon as I took even a few steps, the video froze. I realize that this remote viewer is not designed for watching the video while the camera is mounted in a quadcopter, but it sure would be nice to be able to step into a group on the other side of the room and still at least turn the camera on and off, or snap some still photos.

Unfortunately, you cannot do this because the range is so limited.

      6. The free Sony PlayMemories software (download from the Sony site) is completely useless for anything, and does not help you manage the photos on the camera, so that is not an alternative for managing and deleting videos.

So, here's the bottom line: I would highly recommend the camera, but the Live-View Remote is a terrible product, and I don't see how anyone could be happy with its features and performance.

Get the camera; forget about the Live View Remote bundle.

Comments about Sony HDR-AS100VR POV Action Cam + Live-View Remote Bundle:

Not part of Sony South Africa's model range. Only the AS30.
Used as helmet mounted device on motorbike rides.
Still evaluating the overall performance. Installed a Strontium Micro SDXC 64Gb memory formatted to exFAT and achieved really excellent results in comparison with my previous AS15.
The LVR was mounted on a bracket on the bike's handlebar to allow controlling while in motion. A bit fiddly due to small size and with thick gloves on, but with practice this could be an essential device if only to ensure activation of camera when mounted out of sight.
Only problem so far is incompatibility with playback of footage from camera via USB or in copied format on an Android device i.e. Galaxy S4 and Falaxy Tab3 10.1
Various Apps does not seem to work 100% as the file content is too much of a challenge for the two devices processors....i think.!
Have to do some more experimenting though.
Battery life is very poor in comparison with AS15.
But a spare or 2 can overcome this shortcoming.
Generally, very satisfied with the unit in terms of solid construction, excellent mount options, accessories, slimline design, compact.
Would give 5 stars if not for battery and 3rd party software shortcomings.Excellent choice in comparison with Hero3+ Black in my humble opinion where price is concerned. And no operating issues on my AS100V.
                Thanks....HK

Comments about Sony HDR-AS100VR POV Action Cam + Live-View Remote Bundle:

I use this mainly for my car videos internally and externally with proforma suction mount and home videos etc.

Camera is sleek, light weight, strong case, quick response software and doesn't look cheap. I don't use the waterproof case that much as camera by itself is splash proof so it can be used on light rain. i do like the GPS feature but doesn't use them but a good add-on for special cases like jogging, mountain biking etc.

Working with 1080p-60f videos are much smoother at the same time less chances of error during recording and saving them to memory card, you will need a micro SDXC for PRO mode which records video in 50Mbps where videos has good color resolution and color correction. You also have 120f and 240f but only at 720p and 480p.

To talk about the remote it's again very well built, feels good on your wrist, when i used it i had it on my wrist for about 3 hours, it felt fine, no pain, no sweat issues during 70F weather, it does LIVE view video from camera with very small lag, the interface is very well made and no issues with software.

                Great things

                Camera

                - Good Resolution
                - Good Low light videos
                - Good Sound
                - Well made hardware and software components.

                Live Remote

                - Live view video render.
                - Very little lag.
                - Well made hardware and software components - Good buttons made to work with gloves.

                Not so Great things

                Camera

                - Hard to avoid touching the lens when removing from case.
                - Better Mic - we can always use a external mic if needed.
                - Some rubberized side and backing would be nice for grip.

                Live Remote

                - Lag in LIVE view when recording, also lag increases as you go away from Camera at only one point it completely disconnects.
                - Remote doesn't WORK more than 4 feet when you have some solid structure in-between camera and remote, in my case i had the camera on my car rear bumper and i was in driver seat, there is no communication between remote and camera, as you go nearer to camera live view starts again, it will work as far as 16 feet only if you are in open area.

There is easy solution, you can use sony play memories on app store for apple and android, where mobile had much better communication than live view remote, i was disappointed on this. So returned the camera bundle with remote and just got the camera.

For me remote didn't workout as i wanted but would be perfect for biking, motorcycling, running and water sports.

Comments about Sony HDR-AS100VR POV Action Cam + Live-View Remote Bundle:

My first thoughts were to purchase this action camera for use on my maxi-scooter, and walking or running with a headband mount. Once I knew what was needed on the headband (tight and careful positioning to steady the shot) the video obtained at my first event were very good. The live-viewe remote worked very well (including while running on the runway). Downloading directly from the microSD directly worked best into FCP-X. The Play Memories software installed on my 27" IMAC did not work well on the Mac in that GPS info did not come out. Perhaps when Sony updates their app for MACs it will improve. Meanwhile, I will continue getting great video directly from the microSD plugged in the SD slot on the MAC.

Comments about Sony HDR-AS100VR POV Action Cam + Live-View Remote Bundle:

Five stars without a doubt. Could it be better? Well, there are always things that could make any camera better!
For me though, coming from a gopro hero 3 black, I was curious just how this guy would hold up. First off is the fact the camera plus remote are the same price as just a gopro. I REALLY like the remote. Easy to connect, nice small screen that I can see and use to frame up my shot, plus control the camera.
Camera is easy to control, the menu is easy to navigate and work with. I like that the camera is water resistant on its own so I dont' have to keep it in the case all the time. The addition of the 1/4 mount adapter that screws straigt into the camera is really nice. I'm use to having to have the funky frame and tripod mount sticking out the bottom of my gopro. This is much better.

The still pictures are really something! I was actually blown away by the quality and clarity of the still images. It done really well in low light to!

I've only been abel to record in 1080p standard mode. I havn't been able to turn on the xavc 'PRO' mode. That mode records 50mbs and my standard sandisk ultra micro sd card wont allow me to use that mode. I have to buy a faster card.

All in all, def recommended. I want to pick up a second one to multi-cam with. Love that I can control multiple cameras from the remote. With the gopro I had to disconnect from one network, connect to the next, relaunch the app just to check the next camera.

Only real negative I have about this camera is ITS WHITE! Who's idea was that? Drop it in the snow, your done. I hate that its white because I use these cameras on stage to record music performances. Gaff to the rescue again.

Very impressed so far. I haven't had a chance to really put it through it's paces, but very pleased with the video output I've managed to get. Just a warning, it won't record XAVC S on any cards that won't write 50mbps. The nice thing about that is the camera automatically falls back to the last setting. It flashes a 'Media' message at you for a couple of seconds to let you know that your card isn't fast enough. I'm really hoping that DJI releases the gimbal mount for this that Sony mentions in some of their promo videos. The lens is very clean and the colors are bright, clear and fairly accurate. Stabilization is very smooth, definitely a bonus!

The most impressive things about this Action Cam are the shape being narrow, the high quality of the Zeiss lens, the spectacular steady shot image stabilization. The fact that it doesn't need to be in a protective case and is still weather resistant. All add up to the best POV video camera on the market IMHO! I have used it several times mounted on the handlebar of my mountain bike and you'd think I was riding on smooth pavement! The video quality is superb! My neighbor reviewed my videos and said it blows the doors off his GoPro Hero 3+ Black edition in every respect! HIGHLY recommended. Can't wait till next winter to use it skiing!!

I took the new AS100V out skiing the other day in weather that started out in the teens. I chose to record in 1080 60p with image stabilization on. The results were impressive - great detail, fluid action and I really can't emphasize enough the image stabilization is top notch...a game changer in my mind. I debated buying the camera without the remote but I'm glad I opted for the remote. I removed the wrist band and simply tether the remote from one of my jacket zippers. It is great for lining up the camera, however, you can probably do the same on a bigger smartphone screen using the PlayMemories App.

I skied for 4 hours and replaced the battery once and had plenty of charge in battery 2 by the time I finished. Also, it uses the same battery as my Sony RX100 ii, so that is a big plus.

At this point my only complaint is that the red dot on the remote that indicates you are recording could be bigger, so that it is easier to see.

I mounted the camera unprotected using the new universal head mount which has has 3-way adjustability. In the future, I'll probably use the case when I'm skiing tight trees and, in order to avoid the case fogging up, I'll drill a few holes to allow for better air flow.

At this point I wouldn't even consider a GoPro.
