The black Sony Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera is a versatile and compact mirrorless camera that features a 20.1 megapixel APS-C-sized Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor to produce high-resolution still images and full HD movies with marked low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 16000. The image processor contributes greatly to minimizing overall noise levels and also affords a wealth of speed throughout the camera for recording up to 3.5 fps in Speed Priority Continuous mode.

To support live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation, a 3.0" 460.8k-dot LCD monitor is integrated into the a5000 and utilizes a 180° tilting design to better serve working from low viewing angles as well as in front of the camera. The large screen and intuitive menu interface helps to easily access a host of camera features, including Picture Effects, Auto HDR mode, Auto Object Framing, and for connecting to mobile devices using built-in wireless and NFC connectivity.

Included with the camera body is a Sony E-mount 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Retractable Zoom Lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-75mm. This range of perspectives is well-suited to everyday shooting and is further enhanced through the inclusion of Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for minimizing the appearance of camera shake. Power Zoom technology allows for electronic control over the zoom position and the inclusion of one extra-low dispersion element and four aspherical elements helps to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range as well as contribute to high overall sharpness.

20.1 MP Exmor APS HD CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor
The 20.1 MP APS-C-sized Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor work together to produce high resolution, well-detailed imagery with minimal noise and notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 16000. The processor also contributes to providing a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including a fast 25-point contrast-detection AF system, top continuous shooting rate of 3.5 fps, and full HD 1080i/p video recording in multiple frame rates.
Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1080i/p video recording is supported at both 60 and 24 fps frame rates to produce high resolution movies with a smooth, cinematic look. Videos are recorded using the high-quality AVCHD codec and a built-in stereo microphone records sound in the Dolby Digital AC-3 format. Additionally, 1440 x 1080p, 1280 x 720p, and 640 x 480p formats are also supported in the Internet-friendly MP4 format.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables the a5000 to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required.
Tilting LCD Monitor
For live view monitoring, image playback and review, and menu navigation, a 3.0" 460.8k-dot LCD monitor is integrated into the camera body and features a 180° tilting design to promote easier use from low angles as well as in front of the camera.
Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Retractable Zoom Lens
The included 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Retractable Zoom Lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-75mm, covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of situations. It features Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to help minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps to greatly benefit working in low-light conditions and with greater zoom magnifications. One extra-low dispersion element and four aspherical elements are integrated into the optical construction to help reduce chromatic aberrations as well as increase clarity, sharpness, and contrast and the Power Zoom electronically-driven zoom mechanism brings greater efficiency to controlling the zoom position of the lens.
Other Camera Features
  • A built-in pop-up flash is available to provide additional illumination when working in dim lighting.
  • Auto Object Framing is an intelligent shooting mode that can automatically analyze the scene and subjects within it and determine an aesthetically-pleasing composition. The subsequent imagery will be cropped according to subject matter, resulting in a well-balanced composition that utilizes Face Detection and Tracking Focus to ensure high image quality and sharpness.
  • Picture Effect modes allow you to apply creative settings and emphasize certain facets of individual images for a richer, more aesthetic picture quality. Posterization (Color/B&W), Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color (R/G/B/Y), High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft High-Key, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-Tone Monochrome, Miniature, Watercolor, and Illustration modes are available.
  • The Photo Creativity feature provides quick access to Picture Effects as well as dedicated controls for adjusting Background Defocus, Brightness, Color, and Vividness. Additionally, these effects can be combined for nearly limitless adjustment options
  • Superior Auto mode is an intelligent automated setting that can quickly identify the current shooting environment and adjust crucial camera settings to deliver optimized results. This mode also utilizes Auto HDR and Hand-held Twilight modes, which employ image compositing techniques to better handle difficult lighting conditions.
  • Anti-Motion Blur automatically corrects for subject movement in order to deliver clean, sharp imagery in low-light conditions. This is accomplished by recording six sequential frames and compositing portions of each image to ensure overall sharpness.
  • Hand-held Twilight Mode automatically composites details from six sequentially-recorded images in order to attain higher overall image sharpness when working in low-light conditions.
  • Face Detection/Smile Shutter can detect and base focus, white balance, and exposure settings on recognized faces. This technology also enables the shutter to be released, based on three sensitivity levels, when a smile is detected in the frame.
  • Creative Style settings provide control over how the camera processes images based on six different predetermined styles: Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, and B&W. Within these settings, contrast, saturation, and sharpness can also be adjusted depending on personal preference.
  • The Sony E-mount affords compatibility with an extensive number of lenses and lens adapters.
  • Convenient USB charging allows you to charge the included lithium-ion battery in-camera via USB connection from either an AC outlet or PC source.
  • The Stamina battery power allows up to approximately 420 shots to be taken on a single charge. The InfoLITHIUM batteries also enable you to see the remaining percentage of battery power left.
  • PlayMemories Home software is pre-installed on the camera for automatic downloading to a PC when connected to offer support for viewing, organizing, editing, retouching, printing, and sharing imagery.

I think this camera has the ability to be great, but I just could not get it to work in low-light. I ended up trading in to the d3200 because I needed more control. This seems like a great camera if you are shooting outside and on the run, but did not work well for me when trying to shoot fast action and portraits.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

There have been a lot of improvements to this line since the 5000 came out -- and thus this model was available at an attractive price -- about the same as the lens alone would have cost. My wife will use it as a street camera, and photographing exhibits for blogging at the college where she works part time. We'll also use it as a studio camera (mainly food photography), adapting a bunch of legacy Minolta lenses to it. Newer versions have eyelevel viewfinder and a fully articulated LCD screen. This LCD screen only tilts up. The only annoyance, to my wife, is that the screen shows a lot of grain in moderate to low light. She finds it distracting. Overall noise levels are quite good -- this is an APS-C camera after all.

I went to three different countries over the holidays and bought the camera for the occasion.
I got back and downloaded them to my computer. I must say "the photos turned out great"! From outside night time, to low light inside, to on the water sunny and motion shots. Good HD video also. I was VERY Happy

We ordered this camera right before christmas as we were leaving for a trip to Kenya on the 27th. We wanted a good camera for the safari & this camera turned out to be great. Clean pics & good zoom. BH also had the best price across the market, they were very helpful in helping us pick the right camera for our budget, and delivery service was prompt & at no cost to us. My wife & i could not have been happier.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

I bought this mainly to get started in DSLR videography, and also to do some occasional photography. I do documentary film, so a small camera can be very useful. The price for this was hard to beat (<$ on sale). There is a wide array of Sony E-mount lenses out there, including cinema lenses, and with a converter you can use other mounts as well. When I trade up to an a7000 it's good to know that I can use the same lenses. The a5000 has pretty much all of the functionality of more expensive (and larger/heavier) DSLRs. I trained on a Canon 60D and found the a5000 menus easy to understand and similar. Remember, you are hacking a photography camera for cinema, so there are going to be some things you can't get in a DSLR, but on balance this is good value for money for someone starting out.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (White):

I was never in the market for a camera as I believe phone cameras are convenient and at par with the standard point and shoot camera. I have my own Canon DSLR which I have not used for about 1 year now. This was the case until I visited the Sony Store in Palo Alto, CA. I saw how this camera was compact but delivers DSLR quality photo. Instantly send captured photos to your phone. Flip the LCD for your ultimate selfies. and control the camera and use your phone as the viewfinder for the ultimate selfie experience!

I went ahead and bought it after a week. I brought it to my holiday trip and Christmas parties. It delivered great photos and captured every moment. Sharing photos was a breeze as I can use NFC to copy instantly to my android phone and send it to my family and friends!

This could have been 5 stars if not for some connectivity issue that I have when connecting it to my android phone. I do find that there are times I would reboot both my phone or the camera to establish connection to transfer photo and use it as a view finder. It also only allows Photos to be streamed to a TV wirelessly but no options to transfer or view videos wirelessly. But its not a deal breaker for the overall value it gave me!

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

I own four of Sony's NEX and Alpha cams, ranging from an A3000 to an NEX-7, along a various Canons and Panasonics. Each and every one of the Sony's produces absolutely superb images, which hold their own with anything short of a $3K full-frame, (and even then...). Of course, each of the Sony's has a personality with particular strong points and rough edges. Out of them all, in fact, out of ALL the cameras I own, the a5000 has rapidly become my travel and vacation cam of choice.

With an unmatched size to performance ratio, flash-free low-light capability and auto modes that will impress the most experienced photographers, it's a natural for working fast and concentrating on your subject, not your gear. Of course, the menu system can take you as deep as you want, when the need arises.

Rather than an essay, I'll list my observations in the bullet points, and will be happy to respond to questions as best I can.

Finally, let me say that this camera is a joy to use. If it becomes your first step into the world of "serious" cameras, you done good! I'll bet you will want to get out and play with it whenever you can. If you are further down the path, then no matter what else is around your neck, I'll bet the Sony A5000 becomes a first-choice addition to your arsenal.

I didn't want to get her a DSLR because those are so big she wouldn't carry it around and use it which would defeat the point of having a camera. This one is great because it is almost as small as a point and shoot but it is much better. The coloring is way, way better than the point and shoot she had. She doesn't like that when shooting indoors at night the flash washes people out somewhat. Without the flash the colors are tinted yellow and she doesn't like that look either. This happens with my DSLR as well so I think that's just something one has to live with unless you want to get a detached flash so it's not right in people's faces from the top of the camera. Overall, this is just so much better than her point and shoot.

I really like this camera, great color reproduction and dynamic range, WiFi transfers to phone work well, for a time I thought there was some defect because of a spot on my photos but seemed it was a spec of dust on the sensor

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

Good resolution and capacity, also good to be able to switch lenses if desired.

Unfortunately, the manual is very short, and the menu doesn't cover much.
Also, the lens cap does not have a strap or chord attachment, so I have to hold it in my hand every time I take pictures.
Furthermore, it automatically switches to 'photo review mode after every picture, so you can't snap a photo, and then zoom in right away for the next one.
Finally, the LCD screen is highly reflective, so it's difficult to see the picture your camera is taking if you're not standing in deep shade.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Silver):

I purchased this camera so I could get better pictures than my old point-and-shoot, but still have a camera that is small enough to travel with. So far, I'm loving this camera. It doesn't have a viewfinder and isn't quite small enough to put into my pocket for traveling, which is what I was naively looking for initially, but i continue to be amazed at the image quality i am getting. At this price point, this is a great camera for sure.

I purchase the Sony Alpha A5000 camera about 2 weeks ago. This camera is very easy to use for novice to pro users. The camera takes the best pictures I have seen from indoor to outdoor. I have owned many cameras. This is the best I have had.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

The camera is light, small and takes very nice pictures - sharp with great color. The software features are good if you're trying to be creative. The WiFi doesn't seem to work consistently with either of my Android phones. The auto flash I still haven't figure out and it's too bright and seems to wash out your subjects when you use it.Otherwise a good camera, easy to use and fun.
