The silver Sony Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera is a versatile and compact mirrorless camera that features a 20.1 megapixel APS-C-sized Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor to produce high-resolution still images and full HD movies with marked low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 16000. The image processor contributes greatly to minimizing overall noise levels and also affords a wealth of speed throughout the camera for recording up to 3.5 fps in Speed Priority Continuous mode.

To support live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation, a 3.0" 460.8k-dot LCD monitor is integrated into the a5000 and utilizes a 180° tilting design to better serve working from low viewing angles as well as in front of the camera. The large screen and intuitive menu interface helps to easily access a host of camera features, including Picture Effects, Auto HDR mode, Auto Object Framing, and for connecting to mobile devices using built-in wireless and NFC connectivity.

Included with the camera body is a Sony E-mount 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Retractable Zoom Lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-75mm. This range of perspectives is well-suited to everyday shooting and is further enhanced through the inclusion of Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for minimizing the appearance of camera shake. Power Zoom technology allows for electronic control over the zoom position and the inclusion of one extra-low dispersion element and four aspherical elements helps to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range as well as contribute to high overall sharpness.

20.1 MP Exmor APS HD CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor
The 20.1 MP APS-C-sized Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor work together to produce high resolution, well-detailed imagery with minimal noise and notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 16000. The processor also contributes to providing a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including a fast 25-point contrast-detection AF system, top continuous shooting rate of 3.5 fps, and full HD 1080i/p video recording in multiple frame rates.
Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1080i/p video recording is supported at both 60 and 24 fps frame rates to produce high resolution movies with a smooth, cinematic look. Videos are recorded using the high-quality AVCHD codec and a built-in stereo microphone records sound in the Dolby Digital AC-3 format. Additionally, 1440 x 1080p, 1280 x 720p, and 640 x 480p formats are also supported in the Internet-friendly MP4 format.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables the a5000 to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required.
Tilting LCD Monitor
For live view monitoring, image playback and review, and menu navigation, a 3.0" 460.8k-dot LCD monitor is integrated into the camera body and features a 180° tilting design to promote easier use from low angles as well as in front of the camera.
Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Retractable Zoom Lens
The included 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Retractable Zoom Lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-75mm, covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of situations. It features Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to help minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps to greatly benefit working in low-light conditions and with greater zoom magnifications. One extra-low dispersion element and four aspherical elements are integrated into the optical construction to help reduce chromatic aberrations as well as increase clarity, sharpness, and contrast and the Power Zoom electronically-driven zoom mechanism brings greater efficiency to controlling the zoom position of the lens.
Other Camera Features
  • A built-in pop-up flash is available to provide additional illumination when working in dim lighting.
  • Auto Object Framing is an intelligent shooting mode that can automatically analyze the scene and subjects within it and determine an aesthetically-pleasing composition. The subsequent imagery will be cropped according to subject matter, resulting in a well-balanced composition that utilizes Face Detection and Tracking Focus to ensure high image quality and sharpness.
  • Picture Effect modes allow you to apply creative settings and emphasize certain facets of individual images for a richer, more aesthetic picture quality. Posterization (Color/B&W), Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color (R/G/B/Y), High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft High-Key, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-Tone Monochrome, Miniature, Watercolor, and Illustration modes are available.
  • The Photo Creativity feature provides quick access to Picture Effects as well as dedicated controls for adjusting Background Defocus, Brightness, Color, and Vividness. Additionally, these effects can be combined for nearly limitless adjustment options
  • Superior Auto mode is an intelligent automated setting that can quickly identify the current shooting environment and adjust crucial camera settings to deliver optimized results. This mode also utilizes Auto HDR and Hand-held Twilight modes, which employ image compositing techniques to better handle difficult lighting conditions.
  • Anti-Motion Blur automatically corrects for subject movement in order to deliver clean, sharp imagery in low-light conditions. This is accomplished by recording six sequential frames and compositing portions of each image to ensure overall sharpness.
  • Hand-held Twilight Mode automatically composites details from six sequentially-recorded images in order to attain higher overall image sharpness when working in low-light conditions.
  • Face Detection/Smile Shutter can detect and base focus, white balance, and exposure settings on recognized faces. This technology also enables the shutter to be released, based on three sensitivity levels, when a smile is detected in the frame.
  • Creative Style settings provide control over how the camera processes images based on six different predetermined styles: Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, and B&W. Within these settings, contrast, saturation, and sharpness can also be adjusted depending on personal preference.
  • The Sony E-mount affords compatibility with an extensive number of lenses and lens adapters.
  • Convenient USB charging allows you to charge the included lithium-ion battery in-camera via USB connection from either an AC outlet or PC source.
  • The Stamina battery power allows up to approximately 420 shots to be taken on a single charge. The InfoLITHIUM batteries also enable you to see the remaining percentage of battery power left.
  • PlayMemories Home software is pre-installed on the camera for automatic downloading to a PC when connected to offer support for viewing, organizing, editing, retouching, printing, and sharing imagery.

I am a rank amateur photographer, one of the things I really wanted to do was get some good pictures of our sunsets. This camera does not do a very good job of this using any of the 'auto' functions. I've got a $, 2 year old Panasonic Lumix that does about the same. However, it does take very good pictures in 'typical' daylight. The other thing that it fails at is transferring the pictures over Wi-Fi to my PC (Windows 7). I'm pretty computer literate, and this problem has been reported on several websites (with no real solution), so I would call this 'poor software'.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

This camera was purchased for someone who wanted more than a point and shoot but intimidated by the bulk and complexity of a full dslr. The a5000 is easy to use for beginners, with plenty of manual and custom controls to keep the more experienced photographer engaged. Images look great right out of the camera and the built in wifi makes sharing photos quick and simple.

When it comes to the top of the line digital cameras this is it. The Sony a5000. Works just as a DSLR but without the bulkyness. And if you have a smartphone you can download the app and pair them together via wifi. Very easy to use and the pictures come out great.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

The Sony A5000 makes any beginner feel like a professional photographer. this camera is a basic point and click for all those newby camera wielders who want outstanding quality in their images that are captured. It has multiple settings and a question mark that basically summaraizes what each setting does making each option easy to understand. it takes a few seconds to cut on and off. and Allows you to record 720 hd - 1080 hd videos in over 8 recording settings. This camera also allows you to take wonderful pictures in horrible lighted areas such as a basement or outside at night. My favorite part about the camera is that the charger is your basic Android phone charger so if you lost your camera charger.. no Worries!! just use your Android phone charger to juice it right up!

Walk-around camera, extra to my EOS 700d.
Great to have in my pocket at hand when I see something interesting.
Only drawback is getting used to look at the subject on the screen - but I am sure this will improve.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Silver):

The alpha 5000 is kind of a misfit but that's where demand sometimes lead. Sensor size and image quality rule the roost in my camera selection. I wanted a pocket camera that would deliver similar to my DSLR. The simple fact is that the 1" sensor although much better than any other pocket camera, still does NOT perform like an APSC sensor. So I compromised and decided to accept the larger size of the a5000 to gain sensor size. I considered some 4/3 cameras, but really given the overall "T" shape of those (as well as the a5000), they were NOT significantly more pocketable. The alpha 5000 does match my DSLR for image quality and is more portable for size. It has a more electronic "feel" rather than the mechanical satisfaction of a DSLR. I'm happy with performance! When I want to play with photography, I still use my DSLR. My alpha 5000 lives in a body bag in my backpack and goes everywhere with me. Durability is yet to be time tested?

I love how small and compact it is. Amazing photo quality (20.1 MP - More than my Canon t3i), LOVING the flip screen (perfect for selfies and vlogs), CANNOT leave home without it. Just perfect for those picture-worthy moments. Better than my Canon dslr, but I wish it had a touch screen and more screen pixels. b&h service is just excellent, shipped within 2 weeks. :D

Great upgrade from point and shoot

      By Tracey

      from NYC

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Silver):

Just upgraded to this camera from my point and shoot for more manual control over my travel photography. It's so portable and easy to use. In the store I was warned that this would be more difficult to control manually than higher end models (A6000 etc.) because more settings are in the menu rather than having dedicated buttons, but I've found that it's very easy to jump to the menu to change settings. There's also the option to customize the up/down/left/right buttons and ? button to whichever settings you find yourself changing most often. I feel like this camera has given me a lot of room to learn photography while still maintaining the ability to snap quick shots when I don't want to spend too much time messing with aperture/shutter speed/etc.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

This camera seems to be between a point and shoot and a professional DSLR camera. As with all compromises there a pluses and minuses. It can be used quite like a point and shoot and it will take very good quality pictures. It does get somewhat complicated when you want to do things manually, however. Perhaps after I get more time with it I'll not be as daunted. In my mind, an included "pancake" lens would be a great addition to this package. It would make the camera pocket size. It's a bit big for that with the included zoom lens. I can always buy one, but for $ more I would have bought a different camera. If you can live with the larger size and want a great quality point and shoot camera, you'll be happy with this one.

      Perfect next step

      By K. Smith

      from San Diego, CA

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (White):

I bought my wife this camera for her birthday and she absolutely loves it. She was out grow a basic point and shoot, but didn't feel ready for a traditional dslr. She feels that the alpha a5000 is the perfect next step that offers the ease of a point and shoot, but also offers a lot of manual options of the dslrs at a fraction of the price. B&H offered the best price, not to mention getting a free camera bag and memory card as a gift with purchase. A great shopping experience and couldn't be more happy with her new camera.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

I bought this camera because my home has low lighting and I am tired of not getting any quality photos of my children. I wanted to photos of their childhood to be worth looking at. I also wanted a camera with a good zoom so I could catch them being themselves and doing funny things without interrupting them. This camera takes GREAT photos in lower light settings without having to use a flash and completely washing out the colors of them scene.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

I am a rank amateur photographer, one of the things I really wanted to do was get some good pictures of our sunsets. This camera does not do a very good job of this using any of the 'auto' functions. I've got a $, 2 year old Panasonic Lumix that does about the same. However, it does take very good pictures in 'typical' daylight. The other thing that it fails at is transferring the pictures over Wi-Fi to my PC (Windows 7). I'm pretty computer literate, and this problem has been reported on several websites (with no real solution), so I would call this 'poor software'.

        Nice Little Cam

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

I needed a cam that could serve me as:

              1) an onsite document/archival camera (part of my business is digitizing content for families and small businesses)

              2) a studio product camera (I also build web storefronts);

              3) an indoor/outdoor family photo/video tool

I think the a5000 works very well for me in all three contexts.

Camera RAW was very important to me and I like Sony's implementation.

Lens is not bad. Not great, but I was pushing down into macro lens territory before I got uncomfortable with the focus. More than adequate for my needs. Plus, this is an interchangeable lens cam - you can get another lens you like, if it means a lot to you.

I loveLoveLOVE that I can use my Nexus 10 as a control surface instead of having to press the shutter button - this is particularly important when taking document photos or product photos on a tripod and camera steadiness is paramount. This feature is better than a cable shutter release (which this cam doesn't support).

I love that I can push the ISO down arround 3000 and still get good images. Beyond that things get really grainy, though. Still useful, but grainy.

So all the features I need are there.

Cam seems sturdy and well put together but I haven't really had it long enough to take it on a backpacking trip so the verdict is still out on durability and build.

Menus are no more arcane than any other consumer camera, which is to say... arcane, but not impossible.

I have no use for the in camera FX (that's what Camera RAW and Photoshop are for) but played with them anyway; the deep black & white setting made everything look very meaningful and important...

I am very pleased to see that Sony's camera API will supposedly work with the a5000 and though I've downloaded the SDK and sample code I can't yet report on how well that feature works.

              Overall, very nice package.

              Downsides?

Battery goes FAST... but not too fast. I did an entire twelve hour holiday without needing a recharge.

              Recharge is slow.

The lens cable should have come with a lanyard, or at least an eyelet so I could attach a lanyard of my own. Really, Sony? An unsecured lens cap? REALLY?

The USB cable is too short. It's like, a foot long. Weird.

The access door for inserting simms and/or cables is fragile and can be interfered with by the camera strap attach point if you're not careful - this is without a doubt the most poorly thought out aspect of the hardware and will result in the most service calls.

None of these issues are deal breakers for me. I love this cam. If you buy the a5000, I suggest you purchase a lens protector and a cap with a lanyard, as well as a couple of spare batteries and a charger.

A worthwhile tool and toy, in my opinion.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

There have been a lot of improvements to this line since the 5000 came out -- and thus this model was available at an attractive price -- about the same as the lens alone would have cost. My wife will use it as a street camera, and photographing exhibits for blogging at the college where she works part time. We'll also use it as a studio camera (mainly food photography), adapting a bunch of legacy Minolta lenses to it. Newer versions have eyelevel viewfinder and a fully articulated LCD screen. This LCD screen only tilts up. The only annoyance, to my wife, is that the screen shows a lot of grain in moderate to low light. She finds it distracting. Overall noise levels are quite good -- this is an APS-C camera after all.

I went to three different countries over the holidays and bought the camera for the occasion.
I got back and downloaded them to my computer. I must say "the photos turned out great"! From outside night time, to low light inside, to on the water sunny and motion shots. Good HD video also. I was VERY Happy

We ordered this camera right before christmas as we were leaving for a trip to Kenya on the 27th. We wanted a good camera for the safari & this camera turned out to be great. Clean pics & good zoom. BH also had the best price across the market, they were very helpful in helping us pick the right camera for our budget, and delivery service was prompt & at no cost to us. My wife & i could not have been happier.

Comments about Alpha a5000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

I bought this mainly to get started in DSLR videography, and also to do some occasional photography. I do documentary film, so a small camera can be very useful. The price for this was hard to beat (<$ on sale). There is a wide array of Sony E-mount lenses out there, including cinema lenses, and with a converter you can use other mounts as well. When I trade up to an a7000 it's good to know that I can use the same lenses. The a5000 has pretty much all of the functionality of more expensive (and larger/heavier) DSLRs. I trained on a Canon 60D and found the a5000 menus easy to understand and similar. Remember, you are hacking a photography camera for cinema, so there are going to be some things you can't get in a DSLR, but on balance this is good value for money for someone starting out.
