Ok I just did one concert, one party and one commercial shoot in the past three days. They all done with my GH3 together for multicam production. I want to give you guys some insight about this camcorder.

First I think every shooter need one camcorder along with DSLR or Cinerama camera. There are many occasions that camcorder is very useful. Being able to zoom 12 times and change the speed of zoom seamlessly is a big advantage over DSLR.

Auto focus is slow. Actually I do not mind slow rack focus. What I mean slow that bother me is that it takes very long time to find focus sometimes. In low light or backlight, it just can not find focus for like 5 second. Once it find focus, it will slowly doing rack focus. That is fine. I do not like rack focus to be very fast.

Detail and color is amazing when shooting outdoor. On par with DSLR quality. That is one reason I purchase this camcorder than other very small sensor camcorder. The footage looks richer. I was considering canon xa20, g30 and other small camcorders. But after comparing the footage with cx900, they all being rule out.

Ok now talk about low light. Indeed it has similar low light performance as my GH3. However it has a relative slow lens. f2.8-4. Especially consider it get f3.4 as soon as you zoom in a bit. Most time you are using f3.4-f4 with this camcorder. It is kind slow for indoor low light situation. You need to set very high gain. And image quality decline a lot. For my GH3 I can change lens with large aperture to work with low light. I can not do it with cx900. It is still fine for event type of video. But I would not use it for commercial video in low light situation.

The control layout is placed very convenient. I can control everything regarding exposure on the fly. I think the only thing I can not control that I wish I could is the audio level. Nevertheless it is cool to be able to have control button physically available in this small camcorder.

One thing I really hate is the shoe mount...I need to use two Sony adapters together to be able to use regular accessories..What a joke.I hope there is third party adapter that can make it simple in the future..

Overall for this price, this is the best value camcorder in the market. It has the best image quality and control at this price point.

Initially I thought it is exactly what I wanted but to my dismay, the auto focus is very slow compared to a real camcorder. What drives me nut is the zoom rocker. It is too fast no matter how lightly you push the rocker.
The still image quality is superb as a camcorder but it takes too long to write to the disk or buffer. You miss shots while waiting for the buffer to clear. There is no RAW for the still photo. If these flaws can be fixed in the firmware upgrade, then it will be a perfect hybrid for me.

Comments about Sony HDR-CX900 Full HD Handycam Camcorder (Black):

I use this Sony HDR-CX900 camera strictly as a hand-held video camera primarily for shooting amateur bird and nature videos. I have used this camera for about 5 months. I typically carry binoculars in my left hand and this camera in my right hand. Most of my shooting is outdoors using the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF). I generally cannot use the LCD display for spotting and following birds in the trees and bushes. Sunlight and my need for reading glasses to see the LCD make it unusable. The EVF on this camera is the best I have used so far, but it could still be better. When it becomes as high-resolution and bright as my binoculars, then I will rave about it. The eye cup needs to be larger and better-fitting since sunlight easily leaks in. I have created a foam "eye guard" that helps block sunlight from the eye cup (clumsy). Also, the focus adjust wheel for the EVF is very easily bumped when opening or closing the EVF. I finally put a drop of 'white-out' on the wheel so I can easily re-adjust it when it has been moved.

The main down-sides to this camera for my hand-held use are its size, weight, some ergonomics and some needed improvements. This camera is a bruiser compared with my previous Sony HDR-PJ760V. The PJ760 fit nicely in my hand. The body and balance of the CX900 make it a somewhat uncomfortable fit for my one-handed operation. (I had a sore wrist for the first 3 months.) Adjusting the wrist strap is not enough. I intend to design a bracket so that the heel of my right hand can help support this fairly heavy camera.

I use the zoom button on top and the manual focus ring on the front all the time. I prefer the left-right zoom button of the PJ760 (uses just one finger) compared with the forward-back zoom button of the CX900 (requires two fingers), but it works reasonably well. The focus ring is great, although I wish the CX900 had an option to automatically enable the zoom magnifier while focusing (as it did on the PJ760). The zoom magnifier button on the right side of the lens could probably not be in a worse place - it should be right above the lens so my focus fingers can reach it. The button (and the arrows which are inaccessible on my closed LCD display) are unnecessary. It should simply be an option that is momentarily enabled whenever the focus ring is turned.

User-defined "buttons" are also unusable since I do not have the LCD display open. For me, it would be better if the 3 hard buttons near the manual wheel were assignable. I have the manual wheel set to control exposure, and this is quite handy, but I really don't use the 3 hard buttons individually. They could be put to better use. I set a user-defined button to select 'single-color mode', but to access it, I have to open and tap the LCD, and even then go thru several steps to enable/disable and select the color for this feature. It would be really nice if the camera had a joy-stick button to give me access to all the stuff on the LCD screen while looking thru the EVF.

Steady shot on the CX900 is only fair compared with the PJ760. (It is superb on the PJ760). The 24x 'clear image' zoom on the CX900 is very sharp, but I wish the camera provided at least 30x optical zoom with the steadiness of the PJ760.

Overall, I really like this camera. The images are excellent. I easily send a day's files to my iOS and my Android tablets (MP4 via WiFi) to review and share in the Sony Play Memories apps. That's as magical as anything can be. The few improvements that I've mentioned above would certainly give it the extra star. I can't wait to get next year's version of this camera.

Comments about Sony HDR-CX900 Full HD Handycam Camcorder (Black):

          Pros:
          (1) Big lens with excellent bright clear images, and clear sound.
          (2) Easy to use; auto mode nearly always gets it right.
          (3) Zoom range (12x) covers most situations well.
          (4) Shielded viewfinder is good in bright sunlight (when the screen is hard to see), and has its own small focus control knob so I could use it without my glasses.
          (5) Good battery life (5h) with largest battery (must buy separately).
          (6) Colours are not particularly vivid, but are true and tolerate later video editing of their saturation, to achieve a good level of colour vividness without colour distortion.

          Cons:
          (1) Woefully brief documentation tells you only 1/4 of what you need to know;
          (2) Zoom rocker button is overly sensitive at its low end, making it difficult/impossible to do slow zooms; but one can use the manual zoom ring instead.
          (3) Optical image stablisation options work well for cancelling accidental up-down and left-right motion, but (unlike some other camcorders) don't correct rotational errors as far as I can tell, so it is necessary to be very diligent about keeping the horizon level (ie need to use a tripod or monopod).
          (4) Auto focus is fairly slow, and occasionally gets it "wrong".
          (5) The camera will not recognise or work with generic batteries of the correct type and model, forcing customers to buy Sony's own batteries at about 6 times the price.
          (6) Limited range of frame rates. Being in a PAL region, I got the 50i/25fps version -- which can't do 60 or 30 fps at all. This is only a problem when creating a movie with multiple video cameras and needing to find a frame rate common to them all.
          (7) The slow motion feature was useless to me because the resolution is so low, making all shots look blurry. It would have been great if they'd provided full HD slow motion at 120 fps, 100 fps or even at 50 fps, but they didn't.

I use the camera mostly for making New Zealand tramping/scenic/outdoor documentaries, together with a GoPro for the wet/wide/rough shots and a drone for the aerial shots.

Comments about Sony HDR-CX900 Full HD Handycam Camcorder (Black):

I use this camera filming outdoor adventures. With the extremely large sensor, it takes awesome sharp and clear footage. All the buttons are easy to get to which makes filming easy. For its size it is a little heavy but a little sacrifice is okay for the quality. The biggest drawback is the lack of documentation. The manual, if that's what you want to call it, is more like a quick start guide. I figured that Sony would have something better online, no way, it's the exact same thing. Great camera horrible documentation!

Comments about Sony HDR-CX900 Full HD Handycam Camcorder (Black):

This camera is simply amazing. We do wedding videos and use a combination of DSLRs and Sony NX5s. I wanted a camera that I could grab real quick and do some simple shots here and there but the manual settings and image of this camera are so amazing that I'm now using it for more formal shots. Love that I can adjust Gain, Iris, shutter speed and also come with ND filters! The low light capabilities are amazing too. Sometimes I think that even better than the NX5s! Great depth of field as well. I can't think of anything that I don't like. Maybe the only thing is that it doesn't have internal memory or dual capabilities for internal and external memory recording but not a biggie.

I have had the CX 900 for a few days, and here are some of the things I noticed so far:1) Video is clear but colors are slightly saturated or not well reproduced.2) No users manual. There is an Operating Guide and online Help Guide but both are very simplistic.3) View finder is not vey bright and in sun light can be hard to use. 4) You can use glasses with the view finder but the rubber eye piece is not friendly to glasses.5) A new file is written to the memory card every time you press the record button. This creates a plethora of video files (clips) when you download to a computer for editing. There does not appear any way for the user to control how video is recorded to the memory card/folders.6) No way to display the date on the LCD or in the view finder while shooting video. I usually say the date when I start shooting and having the date in the view finder is a great help.

Comments about Sony HDR-CX900 Full HD Handycam Camcorder (Black):

This Sony model takes great video at each frame rate option (though auto focus is a little slow). However, there appears to be a technical issue with recording at 60p (and only at 60p)-- the sound recording is clipped/cuts in and out and also has a loud hiss. I have tested it in numerous indoor and outdoor occasions including a silent closet and it happens with every recording. I sent my original camera back to B&H thinking that I had a bad model. Got the new one and it does the exact same thing. I tried adding an external mic (Sony ECM-XYST1M) and the clipping and hiss sound goes away. So . . . do not plan on recording with the CX-900 at 60p without an external mic. I called Sony Support and reported my experience - but it was a quick conversation. It was hard to tell if they already knew about the issue and they provided no operational suggestions. Seems to be a great camera with that exception. Would be interesting if others could test and see if they have the same problem.

Comments about Sony HDR-CX900 Full HD Handycam Camcorder (Black):

The Sony HDRCX 900 is a true hybrid. 50% Video and 50% still camera.
it does both very well. The color and contrast range imaging is amazing. The multi layers of exposure control from full automatic
to semi-automatic to full manual offers ease of operation and great creative flexibility. The image stabilization is excellent. It work well to about 15x on the combined optical/digital zoom. From 16x to 24x the image is clear but the stabilization begins to fall apart and jitters. The manual zoom ring is not worth much as it jumps in small steps as you start a zoom. The manual focus is excellent. The mickey mouse awards goes to the very small zoom rocker and the USB cable in the hand strap.
What is that about? And lastly the instruction book can only be described as an insult to the camera itself. It took about 3 days to figure out the full range of exposure control, remote operation, and menu functions. Sony tech support was not much help either. (B&H staff was very helpful.) These short comings however are not deal changers.
Why the camera is classified as a prosumer is beyond me as it out preforms Pro camera in the same price range. Yes, i would recommend the camera to anyone experienced enough to appreciate its capability and limitations.

Comments about Sony HDR-CX900 Full HD Handycam Camcorder (Black):

Skeptical at first, as I didn't know what quite to expect from the 1" sensor. After shooting a dimly lit nightclub band (auto setting), I was truly amazed at the detail in the shadows and auto-focus capabilities.
I wasn't concerned about audio as I was going to overdub with pre-recorded music, so I didn't perform sound level check, et.al., but again; quite amazed at the sound quality, which was left on auto as well.
Focusing could be faster, but definitely not a deal-breaker.
When I played this back on my 42" flat screen, I was blown away by the detail of the musicians. I could actually see the pores in their skin, as well as individual strands of hair.
Manual adjustment knob could be larger and located in more convenient place, as I normally shoot manually religiously.
Very pleased with the performance of the HDR-CX900 thus far.
And this was just the first week.
Sony got it right this time!

Comments about Sony HDR-CX900 Full HD Handycam Camcorder (Black):

I was shocked at how good the video was in this camcorder. I'm a huge Sony camera fan but this camera is a sleeper. I tried the 4k version and even though it may have been defected I could still tell that the new HD XAVCs codec on the CX900 wasn't far behind in quality if any really. The focusing is a little slow but for most shooters it will be plenty okay and it locks onto focus clearly even in low situations. What I didn't expect was the phenomenal still picture quality. Absolutely Killer!!! I'm convinced that if they make a new RX10 camera with the XAVCs codec it will be a huge run away success especially with that huge 2.8 lens. Overall I rate this camera as the best camcorder for size, quality of picture and ease of work flow/file size.

using this as a b-cam for interviews, run/gun ... image quality is excellent, 1" chip and XAVC codec ... sandisk extreme @ 45 MBPS not fast enough for XAVC. i returned that and purchased sandisk extreme pro @ 95/90 read/write speed, it can handle the XAVC codec. i cannot speak for other cards. the users manual for this cam stinks. if you want to shoot in dummy mode, no problem. if you want manual features, be prepared to play with it and learn for yourself because the manual is pathetic.
