The black Canon VIXIA HF R500 Full HD Camcorder records Full HD 1920 x 1080p video directly to a removable SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card. It also supports 2.07MP still image capture. The HF R500 features a 3.28MP Full HD CMOS image sensor and a DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor. It employs a Canon HD video lens with 57x Advanced Zoom and SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization. For easy recording and instant playback, the camera has a 3" capacitive LCD touch panel display as well. Designed with all levels of users in mind, the HF R500 has a laundry list of features including MP4 and AVCHD independent or dual simultaneous recording, an advanced Baby Mode, Intelligent IS, Smart AUTO, a higher capacity battery for longer shooting sessions, and much more.

For connectivity to your HDTV or high-resolution monitor, the HF R500 is equipped with a mini-HDMI output. For improved audio monitoring and recording, the HF R500 has a headphone output and a microphone input. The headphone jack also doubles as the analog audio/video output on the camera. If you want to give your home videos an interesting cinematic feel, you can employ one the HF R500's seven Cinema-Look filters before you start shooting. You can also add one of these filters after you've finished recording. Each filter is adjustable as well, so you can dial in the perfect cinematic look for each recording. The HF R500's other main features include Video Snapshot, Genuine Canon Face Detection, a 30p Progressive shooting mode and a 24p Cinema shooting mode.

Powerful 57x Advanced Zoom
Thanks to an impressive 57x Advanced Zoom range, long-range shooting is not a problem. You'll be able to create videos with dynamic variety, and you'll be less likely to disrupt the action you're shooting. The Advanced Zoom works well for a variety of situations including formal ceremonies, recording animals in the wild, candid family videos and more. The Advanced Zoom is available in manual mode and has been achieved with more efficient use of the effective imaging area. It takes the camcorder's focal length from 32.5mm all the way to 1853mm (35mm equivalent), which provides extraordinary flexibility in shooting. Plus, for more convenient shooting and better creative control over your videos, the camcorder offers continually variable zoom speed settings with three fixed zoom speeds and 15 levels available.
SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization
Canon's sophisticated SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer corrects camera shake instantly, so even handheld video taken at long focal lengths is sharp and steady. Providing continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range to correct a broad range of motion (with extra compensation applied at wide-angle focal lengths), the Dynamic Image Stabilization system on this camcorder stabilizes rotational camera shake. Controlling horizontal, vertical and roll axis rotational camera shake ensures smooth, distortion-free video - even when you're walking while shooting.
3.28MP Full HD CMOS Image Sensor
This model is equipped with a 3.28MP Full HD CMOS image sensor that supports 1920 x 1080 resolution video capture. Canon's high-resolution HD CMOS sensor features extra sensitivity that delivers lifelike Full HD video with natural color - even in low light. On-chip noise reduction supports clarity in every frame, which means your video and photos will be vivid, clear - even when played back on a large HDTV.
DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor
This camcorder incorporates an advanced Canon HD the DIGIC DV 4 image processor for enhanced imaging performance. The increased performance allows for better noise reduction and leads to brighter, more noise-free images - even in dark scenes.
SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card Slot
The camcorder records Full HD video directly to a removable SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card. Widely available in several capacities, SD memory cards let you share your videos quickly and easily. In addition to SD memory cards, this model also lets you use high-capacity SDHC cards and super-high capacity SDXC cards.
MP4 or AVCHD Progressive Recording
Whether you're capturing MP4 or AVCHD files, this model supports Full HD 1920 x 1080/60p video capture. Full HD 1080/60p recording captures twice the amount of information as 60i, and with images captured at a rate of 60 frames per second, diagonal noise is eliminated so even fast moving subjects show up clearly. This provides a greater sense of detail and faithful rendering of moving edges, plus enhanced color and fine tonal gradation. AVCHD Progressive records at bit rates up to 28 Mbps, while MP4 files are captured at bit rates up to 35 Mbps.
Capacitive 3" Touch Panel LCD
This model features a capacitive 3" touch panel LCD screen that makes recording and other operations easy. Open the panel and the power is on. A gentle touch activates the display's intuitive functions. Choose a focal point, track moving subjects, control exposure for selected areas, and operate camcorder controls from the screen - all with a touch. In addition, the easy-to-use user interface makes your shooting experience simpler. The Home button is on the menu screen, and provides quick access to all functions. Clear explanations for key settings pop up when selecting shooting modes and recording formats, so you can be confident in the decisions you make.
Baby Mode
The camcorder features Canon's Baby Mode - a complete solution for capturing, tracking, organizing and sharing every moment of your baby's development. A custom control button on the shooting screen activates the mode, and optimal settings for the shooting conditions, including Intelligent IS and more, are automatically selected. Videos shot in Baby Mode are automatically saved into a dedicated Baby Album so they won't get lost among your other videos. You can view the Baby Album chronologically as well.

When shooting in Baby Mode, the camcorder's Pre-Record (Pre REC) function is always on. This places the camcorder in a stand-by "pre-roll" mode, where it continuously records three seconds of video to memory before you even press the record button. When you start recording, the additional video is recorded too, so you won't miss your baby's "first" moments.

Touch Decoration in Baby Mode includes stamps to mark each video with your baby's current height and weight. And with a single registration of the baby's birth date, the camcorder will automatically calculate the number of days old and stamp videos accordingly, creating an exact diary of developmental milestones for years to come. The camcorder's other Baby Mode Touch Decoration options allow you to add your own drawings, captions, animations and more. All options can be appended to previously shot video as well.

Higher Capacity Battery
This model is powered by a higher capacity battery pack than previous Canon camcorders. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery not only lets you shoot longer, but features intelligent technology that accurately indicates remaining battery time down to the minute.
Intelligent IS
Intelligent IS makes it easy to shoot clear, sharply focused video - even in situations that typically cause camera shake. The Intelligent IS system analyzes the shooting situation for you, then automatically switches to the image stabilization method best able to produce sharp, steady video. Four IS systems cover the gamut of shooting situations. Dynamic IS corrects minor movement and the shaking caused by walking while shooting. Macro IS delivers perfectly steady close-up shots. Powered IS comes into play when you're using the camcorder's powerful zoom, correcting shake that can occur in telephoto shots. Tripod mode stops IS when the camcorder is stationary.
Audio Scene Select
Audio Scene Select offers five modes that automatically optimize settings based on the recording situation, making it easy to record realistic, immersive audio in a range of situations.
Smart AUTO & Auto Tele Macro
Smart AUTO lets you capture clear, bright, well-focused video while the camcorder takes care of all the details. The system recognizes 38 shooting situations based on numerous factors, then automatically chooses the optimal settings for the situation. When you shoot a nearby subject in telephoto zoom mode, Auto Tele Macro gives your video the high-end artistic effect of a well-focused subject against a blurred background.
Cinema-Look Filters
This feature offers a choice of seven varied built-in adjustable filters, which give the look of a variety of cinematic styles by compensating for the color, gamma and other aspects of the image's quality. The looks can be previewed in the LCD monitor while shooting, and also applied post-capture for additional convenience and versatility. Choose from Cinema Standard, Old Movies, Vivid, Cool, Nostalgic, Dramatic Black & White or Sepia. For even greater control, the brightness of each filter can be set to low, medium or high. When Cinema Standard is selected, color depth, softening and contrast can also be adjusted.
Genuine Canon Face Detection
The same high quality Face Detection technology used in Canon digital cameras is available in Canon HD camcorders. Up to 35 faces can be tracked automatically, ensuring sharp focus and accurate exposure. Of the faces tracked, nine detection frames can be displayed at one time. The system will even recognize faces turned downwards or sideways. In addition, a specific face may be selected as the main subject for continuous tracking. This feature also helps when you're searching for clips that feature a specific subject's face. In search and playback, use of the Face Index will display those frames with the chosen face as a thumbnail in each shot in which it appears. Your selected face can also be linked as a timeline to further identify footage containing your subject.
Video SnapShot
Video Snapshot allows you to capture the highlights of a once-in-a-lifetime trip or a family milestone with the same ease as taking photos. Simply record a series of short video clips - or select your favorite clips while in Playback Mode - and blend in your favorite background music to create an exciting movie that will grab everyone's attention. Video Snapshot allows selectable recording times of two, four or eight seconds. Additionally, audio from an external source such as an MP3 player can be played along with your Snapshot movie. Plus, playback can be controlled from that source.
24p Cinema & 30p Progressive Shooting Modes
The camcorder offers a 24p Cinema mode that gives your video a film-like feel, making it look as if it were shot at the same frame rate as movie film. It does this by capturing at a frame rate of 24p and recording it in a 60i wrapper. The camcorder also gives you the option of recording in 30p Progressive mode, which is great for clips you intend to post online.
Programmed AE
Programmed AE with Smart Auto, Manual Mode P and SCN (Portrait, Sports, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Night, Low Light, Spotlight, Fireworks), Cinema Mode (with Cinema-Look filters), and Baby Mode.

I bought this camcorder knowing that I would not likely be totally satisfied with the quality. I have two DSLR's (7D and 5D MarkIII) that I am also not totally satisfied with the quality of the video.I have had various Camcoders over the years, with my latest being a Sony MiniDV Camcorder I bought in 2003 or 2004. When my Photo Camera's (mentioned above) began to have video capability at HD resolutions, I (for the most part) quit using my miniDV Camcorder due to the huge difference in quality of the video. However, the thing I gave up was ease of use. A DSLR is not easy to use for video of family activities, at least not without a significant amount of other gear.Over the years, I was capturing all of my old videos to the computer for easy access, and recently I tried to complete that activity and in the process I ended up watching quite a bit of the files with my kids and it was fun. I began to realize that I did not have as much video from my DSLR's as I typically had from my video camera, and they often were not as interesting. This made me desire to get another camcorder that can do high def and was small and easy to carry around while being inexpensive.I checked this against some Sony camera's in the store and could not see much difference just on the monitor (not a good or fair comparison), but the canon was 25% cheaper with a longer zoom lens and other ease of use features, so I decided to go for the Canon even though I have been more impressed with Sony Camcorders in the past. For what it is, I am satisfied with the purchase, although I desire more than can be expected from a camera in this price range. As expected, the picture quality is much, much better than my miniDV camcorder in good outdoor lighting, but drops off really fast in low lighting. My Mini DV did not drop off in quality quite so much in low light. In outdoor lighting, it has generally captured the colors fairly accurately and provided a fairly detailed image. I can clearly see lack of detail in grass and trees, but it still creates an image that is easily watchable on the TV with enough detail that it is satisfying for the type of videos that I am doing. There are issues with dynamic range in bright sunlight and it would be nice to have some kind of ND filter or something to tame down very bright areas, but it was not terribly bad. My kids and wife were not bothered by it.I have not used it much indoors in low lighting situations, but when I have used it indoors at night even with relatively good lighting, I can see a clear drop in detail along with noise. The videos were pretty well exposed and watchable, but definitely not what I would call good High Definition. Inside during the day when there was light coming in from outside, it performed better, but still not that well. My kids and others that have seen the videos are not too bothered by it, but the lack of detail in low light bothers me enough that I will not be using it much in these lighting conditions. The camera in use is pretty good. The menus took me a while to get used to, but once I figured them out, it was fairly easy to adjust things to my liking. The touch-screen works pretty well. The zoom works well and with the variable zoom setting on it is responsive enough to do fast and slow zooms in a controlled manner as I desire. The Autofocus works better than I expected for a camera in this price range. It was usually very snappy at finding the correct focus and did not do a lot of focus hunting. It can have difficulty when zoomed in and changing focus from items close to far away or vice versa, but overall it was very responsive and accurate. I was very satisfied with the autofocus and using the viewfinder to select the focus point also worked very well. Although doing this while recording video is difficult to not cause camera shake, so I would do it before actually recording the video if possible.I was actually pretty amazed at how well the image stabilization worked. At any wide to low telephoto range, the image is kept very stable even on standard IS. It is harder to keep stable at full telephoto (especially with how light the camera is), but we are talking about a 35mm effective zoom of around 1200mm with pure optical (32x) and 1853mm with the advanced (57x) zoom setting (the only two settings I would use). I think it performed remarkably well and much better than I expected at that long of a zoom range. It would be best to use a tripod or other support for really long zooms, but I have gotten useable video handheld at max zoom (57X). It does get significantly less contrasty, soft and has a high level of Chromatic Aberration at high focal lengths, but we cannot expect miracles at this price point. I still plan to keep the camera as it serves the purpose I have for it and it is much better than my MiniDV camcorder in all ways. The points I really liked were: 1.) It is small light and easy to carry around. I want to be able to bring it with me even when I have my DSLR's with me and it can be slung over my shoulder and not even notice it when I am on a photo outing or out and about with the family. 2.) It has several different recording capabilities (including MP4 and AVCHD at 1080 60P). My 5D MIII can only do 1080 30P, and I prefer the 60P capability. 3.) It was relatively inexpensive. After getting used to the costs of my DSLR camera's and lenses, this camcorder gives you a lot of bang for the buck. 4.) The image stabilization and autofocus worked better than I expected at this price point and 5.) the zoom range is incredible – I know we give up some in picture quality for this zoom range, but it is pretty cool to be able to get workable video of things so far away. The main things I disliked were (take these with a grain of salt as I am really picky about some of this):1.) Video quality drop off in low light – this is my biggest disappointment and one that I am sure some people will not be able to accept. I barely do.2.) Lack of viewfinder – this is not an option in any camcorder at this price point, but I much prefer to use a viewfinder on any camera (video or stills). It can get really challenging to see what you are video taping when in bright light3.) Overall level of detail – I was hoping that the quality would be at least as good as my DSLR's in terms of detail in good lighting – but it was not. I did not expect dynamic range and low light to be as good for obvious reasons, but being a dedicated video device I hoped detail would be as good or better when the lighting was good. It was closer to the 7D than the 5D MIII, but still not as good. I could probably discuss this more and organize this better, but it is taking longer than I expected to write this so I will stop now.I hope this helps

This is a very simple camera. (I'm using the European version but they should be the same)It has almost no other functionality. It does the job though, but: a. Quality is very low in bad light conditions (room light is not enough most of the time !) - I've specifically asked that in the b&h store, I was told it would be ok, but..... nope. The video is not so good indoors. much better outside.b. The recorded file is splitted into 4GB files. it means that you need to stich it together by yourself. when you do this, you get the video and audio out of sync. So - This is a great camera in terms of price and for outdoor use. not so good for indoors. The battery that comes with it is very very poor. I've bought the offered 2nd battery which is not that good also. when you plug it to the power it will not charge while operating so it limits your ability to use the camera.

Comments about VIXIA HF R500 Full HD Camcorder (Black):

I first must say that this is not expensive or a lot of money, and you will get what you pay for. But, with some simple accessories, you can make this into a great camera.

If you shoot for your online video channel, this is a great starter for you to use. This is especially true if you upload videos that you shot using your phone. But, like I said, you will want to accessorize this camera a bit.

This first thing that made me even consider this camera, was the microphone input. All onboard microphones are sucky when compared to a good external microphone. The onboard mic works, but unless you want every sound in the room, you will want another mic.

Some would suggest a wired lapel like the Polsen OLM-10 that gives you a 20' cord, but I never shoot that far away and I am clumsy. I could see myself turning with the mic attached, and pulling down my camera and tripod.

I tend to shoot no more than 3-6 feet away, and would pair it with the Polsen SCL-1075 or the Senal SMS-45. These microphones pick up the sound very well in this distance range.

The second thing I liked was that the camera also has a headphone jack, and I paired it with a Polsen HPC-A30 headset. It is an over ear (yes your ears might get sweaty if you wear them too long) headset that is great for checking your sound levels.

Thirdly, I like that it has the Canon Digic DV4 Image Processor and shoots in MP4 formats. Yes low light is bad, but so are most all consumer video cameras and cell phones. So you need a great external light source (internal lighting is ok, but there are times when you want the light closer to the subject than the camera).

The 32x Optical Zoom is good enough for just about any project, and stay away from the digital zoom... Digital zoom is evil...

The Aputure Amaran AL-160 is a great pair for this camera, and has two features that make it nice to work with. It is a 5500K Daylight Balanced light and it uses the Sony NP style batteries. You might be more partial to the warmer 3600K lights, and that is all up to personal preference.

That reminds me of another feature that sold me on this camera, and that is the manual White Balance. People!!! Please learn to use your White Balance...

Because the camera doesn't have a shoe mount for the microphone or light, I got the Sunpak Action Video Grip. Now it only has one shoe mount so the Cool-Lux MD-3000 Light and Sound Bracket could fix this, but the Sunpak is plastic and there is a lot of top heavy wobble when you move it quickly. The good thing about the Sunpak is that it is freestanding, so you can set it on a tabletop and when the wobble stops, proceed with shooting.

You will notice that I am choosing the bottom priced accessories, because I am keeping the overall cost of this camera down. Every accessory, can be upgraded as needed, and the old one set aside as a backup.

Even though the price has about doubled on the camera and accessories, for the money you get something that is expandable. I have seen people spend their whole $7K budget on one camera, and have rotten video because of poor sound, lighting and stability.

The Canon HF R500 with the Mic, Headphone, and HDMI jacks is great. The HD and Digic DV4 Processor makes it better. And the features like White Balance and Mpeg4 recording make it one of the best bangs for the buck.

Once you get to shooting, you will start to see your wishlist grow as you learn what your needs and personal preference are.

Comments about VIXIA HF R500 Full HD Camcorder (Black):

I got this camera to use as a backup/remote camera for my YouTube videos. Camera works great and allows me to record in 1080p at 60fps. Also lets me record directly to MP4 format. The only con I have with this camera is the AGC is slow to recover. I do firearm reviews and demonstrations and once a gun is fired the AGC lowers the sensitivity of the mic which is not really a problem. The problem is that it is slow to return the sensitivity to normal after I am done firing. So when I do my dialogue I have to wait a bit for the AGC to recover or I won't have any usable audio. I chose this camera specically because it offers a mic input but even with the Rode videomic the AGC overrides it and shuts down the audio for 10 to 15 seconds.

This unit is lightweight and super compact. I am actually using a lowepro lens case for it when it is not in my full bag. I went with this at a much lower price rather than the R52 with 32gig on board memory. I can purchase a few cards for the price savings. I have only toyed with it a bit so far so I can't fairly review all its features yet so far I am very pleased.

I did purchase the Watson AC/DC charger along with an extra lithium Ion Battery. The charger worked great and is also small and compact. Without a third party charger you must charge the battery on the camera!

Our cameras get a lot of use. Our high school has a video class with 32-38 students in any given year. There school days where every camera is used at least once and weekends when all 8 cameras are checked out by students. We started with Canon ZR80s, then ZR500s, 800s, 900s, and 960s. These HF R500s are the sturdiest yet. It took more than two years before the first of these cameras started giving us problems. I've recommended Canon to other teachers starting video programs.

My wife and I got this one to record our vacations to Orlando, FL. It´s really light to carry it with you in the theme parks, very easy to use (we didn´t even had the need to check the manual to start using it).

The only con I could think of, is that it´s very hard to get a steady image at the highest zoom (i think it´s 85mm).

I use this camcorder to film short videos for YouTube. The ability to record in mp4 makes it easier for when uploading to my editing software. The built in features are wonderful and you can really set it up to get that perfect look. The quality of the video is a complete delight, with many different quality settings to choose from. I have a studio lighting system I use so I cannot attest to how the picture holds up in low light settings. For those who are looking into getting into making videos and can't dish out the money for a high end DSLR, I recommend this.

I was looking for something under budget of 200.00 USDs and B&H was providing a great deal on this one. Product itself is great for the little budget and is strictly for casual video makers. Not for pros. Quality is decent. Easy to use.

B&H is extremely user friendly - both portal wise and economy wise. Cheers.

For the prize and size it is a great camera. It does really well with daylight and outdoor lighting. Not the greatest for dark light. Recordings at the highest resolution are vibrant and clear. I have been using them to live stream with the Blackmagicdesign ATEM 4K switcher. Works well with that. (Had to downscale it to stream with a Decimator product.

Comments about VIXIA HF R500 Full HD Camcorder (Black):

This was purchased as a backup camera for video production and for shooting home video. I love the microphone input and excellent image stabilization. It does not handle low light too well, but this is to be expected for a camera like this. Still, its an amazing value.
