  • 50x Optical Zoom
  • 90x Intelligent Zoom

  • Built-In Creative Control Modes
  • Baby Monitor Function

The HC-V550 Full HD Camcorder from Panasonic features Full HD 1920 x 1080 recording, along with a 50x optical and 90x intelligent zoom. Intelligent zoom uses a new technology to capture video even when the optical range is exceeded and the subjects are very far away, like at sporting stadiums.

Also featured is the camcorder's Advanced Level Shot Function and 5 Axis Hybrid Optical Image Stabilizer+(O.I.S.+) with a three-level setting (Off, Normal and Strong) that doubles the tilting correction range for even better effectiveness when moving and shooting. The improved correction algorithm provides better tracking even when tilted quickly. Together with the 5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S+ optical image stabilizer, this provides powerful correction for camera movement and tilting.

The camcorder also includes built-in Wi-Fi and is NFC (near-field communication) enabled for even more flexibility when pairing up with optional HDTVs and mobile devices. They also include a Baby Monitor feature that allows you to check in on a sleeping baby in another room (when the camcorder is connected to your home network with a smartphone). You can speak to the baby using your smartphone and even be notified when the baby cries or when a voice is detected in the room. Ustream allows you to live stream video over the Internet as well.

Built-in modes include Miniature Effect, 8mm Movie, Silent Movie, and Time Lapse Recording. They help to inspire and creatively control your shooting. There's also a backside illuminated sensor that helps you shoot in low light situations.

Advanced Level Shot Function and 5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S.+ with Active Mode & O.I.S. Lock
This camera features the Advanced Level Shot Function and 5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S.+ (Optical Image Stabilizer) for minimizing the effects of hand movement and tilting. The tilting correction range has been doubled for enhanced corrective performance. The setting can be adjusted to one of three levels (Off, Normal, Strong) based on your shooting conditions. When shooting in situations where tilting tends to occur or for users who are unaccustomed to shooting, the Strong setting applies a wider correction range with stronger correction for recording video that can be comfortably and easily viewed. The correction algorithm has been improved for better trackability and provides better tracking even when tilted quickly. Together with the 5-Axis Hybrid O.I.S+ optical image stabilizer, this provides powerful correction for camera movement and tilting. The camcorder provides a stabilization lock function as well.
50x Optical Zoom and 90x Intelligent Zoom
Intelligent zoom uses super resolution technology for imaging at HD quality even when the optical range is exceeded. This function enables shooting sharp close-ups of faraway subjects. This is effective when you are separated from the subject by a considerable distance such as when shooting outdoor events.
Built-In Wi-Fi, NFC-compatible
Built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for home or office network compatibility is featured in these camcorders, along with NFC (near-field communication) functionality, for hooking up your camcorder to NFC enabled devices. You can also live stream video to paired devices over the Internet using Ustream.
Baby Monitor Feature
The camera includes a Baby Monitor feature which enables you to check on a sleeping baby in another room with the camcorder connected to a home network with a smartphone. You can speak to the baby using your smartphone, or have notifications sent to your smartphone when your baby's crying voice or other sound is detected.
Creative Control Effects
The built-in Creative Control modes of Miniature Effect, 8mm Movie, Silent Movie, and Time Lapse Recording enable you to add effects to your video for further enhancing your creativity.

Comments about Panasonic HC-V550 Full HD Camcorder:

This is a nice camera at this price. The image quality and stabilization are really good, even at max zoom. I miss some features like fade in/out (it is available but each time you turn off the camera the configuration is lost, so in fact you actually end up not using this) and external light, but it is easy to buy some external led light fot this.
It is lightweight and small, good to use in the hand and even place on a coat pocket if necessary (of course it won't fit on a jeans pocket).

So far, I cannot think of anything negative. It's my first go-around with this type of camcorder (last one was Hi-8). This camcorder is very easy to use and creates beautiful videos. I have uploaded many of the videos to youtube so my family members from far away can keep up with our events and so far, the feedback has been great!

Comments about Panasonic HC-V550 Full HD Camcorder:

I bought this for one purpose only: I belong to a radio control race boat club. I video the boats on the lake and speeds can range from 30mph to 120mph. I have used Nikon P310 camera's video fuction up to now. As good as it is, I can't help but notice the boats' movement is jerky.
Well, I am happy to report that when set to 1080MP4 format, the uploaded video is excellent, the movement is silky smooth, tried AVCHD and in the various level they all looked good. I primarily look at these clips on a PC so MP4 is the way for me to go.
I bought a Vello 3" hood for the bright sunlight which is the usual condition I have to video these events.

Comments about Panasonic HC-V550 Full HD Camcorder:

This is a very impressive video camera, allowing zooming into details, then zooming back to wide angle with ease. I took it to an event and shot 95 high definition scenes in one day. The trouble is that the software that comes with this camera is very lame, abending with various error codes whenever more than a few scenes are loaded. You get no usable information on why or where to continue. You end up re-doing the load over and over until all the scenes get loaded, then the processing into a playable DVD also requires re-doing over and over. I have been looking for a reliable, usable, and non-error-prone piece of software but find that so many have this same problem.

Comments about Panasonic HC-V550 Full HD Camcorder:

I have an older camcorder that no longer suits my needs because it only records to a mini disc, and I need to share video of my grandson with extended family and friends. I did quite a bit of research since I am not very good at reading manuals and figuring out how to use products. This camcorder received high marks from Consumer Reports, and positive reviews from purchasers. The two biggest selling points for me are the 3" LCD screen, and the digital controls. It is so easy to use. Another great feature is the stabilizer. I use it basically as a point and shoot camcorder, but here are many other features and uses. I only want video of family and friends for future viewing. It is HD, so the quality is excellent. I have used it indoors and outdoors, and the quality for both is excellent. It is lightweight and comfortable to use. I am extremely happy with my choice!

Comments about Panasonic HC-V550 Full HD Camcorder:

I've been searching for a replacement for my JVC GZ-MG750 BU camcorder that I bought in 2010. I bought this camcorder for just a few dollars more, but this camera has a much more robust feature set. It's zoom is fantastic. By turning on the iZoom, you can reach 90X optical zoom that is really excellent. The image stabilization is very good, however, at higher zooms you might want to use a tripod. We purchased a handle that attaches to the tripod mount on the camcorder -- the BARSKA Accu Grip Handheld Tripod System. We've been using this on the JVC camcorder since we bought it and it's really terrific for steadying your hand and getting a good grip on the camera. It works great on this Panasonic camcorder as well. The camcorder comes bundled with editing software -- Panasonic HD Writer LE 2.1. However, this software does not allow you to create DVD disks of your videos. We have always enjoyed watching our videos via our DVD player and TV, so this was a bummer. I started doing some research on the Panasonic website, and I discovered that they have a different HD Writer software that allows you to burn DVDs of your videos. It is HD Writer AE 5.1. You can download this software from the Panasonic website:[@]lYou can use the HD Writer AE 5.1 software instead of HD Writer LE 2.1.I spent several hours figuring out how to transfer my videos to my PC and then copying those videos to DVD. To save you a lot of time, here's the procedures that I figured out:YOU MUST SHOOT YOUR VIDEO IN MP4 IF YOU PLAN TO DUB THE VIDEO TO DVD DISKS!!***Transfer Video from Camcorder to PC - Instructions***1. Plug in camcorder via AC power adapter2. Attach USB cable from camera to PC3. Select "PC" on camcorder's LCD screen4. Close AUTOPLAY window on PC desktop (if it appears)5. Open HD WRITER AE 5.1 program on PC6. Check for updates: OK7. Click on COPY TO PC button on upper left corner of HD Writer window8. On COPY SOURCE DRIVE, move slider to reveal VIDEO CAMERA icon, then click on that icon9. Click NEXT10. Select each video segment to be copied to the PC11. Click NEXT12. Click EXECUTE________________________________________________________________________________________________*** Copy Video Segments to DVD Disk - Instructions ***IMPORTANT: Must use DVD-R blank disk! Do not use DVD+R disk!1. Restart computer before beginning this process2. After restart, exit all programs and open windows3. Insert blank DVD-R disk into DVD burner on PC4. Open HD Writer AE 5.1 program5. Click on MP4 button6. Select "VIDEOS" folder in side menu at left (this will display all videos)7. Click on SELECT ALL button8. Click on COPY TO MEDIA button9. Click on drive that DVD-R blank disk is in10. Click on DVD VIDEO FORMAT STANDARD QUALITY IMAGES (SP)11. Select specific video segments that are to be copied (videos will be shaded blue when selected)[Videos can be dragged & dropped into window at bottom]12. Check file size of videos to be copied and number of disks that will be required13. Click NEXT14. Enter a TITLE for the video disk15. Click EXECUTEI kept getting error messages during the transfer-to-DVD disk process on my Windows 8 PC. After trying everything I could think of, and spending hours in the process, I finally decided to try doing the whole process on my Windows 7 PC. It worked on the first try. I don't know if there's a compatibility problem with the HD Writer software with Windows 8, but I'm just going to do the DVD dubbing on my Windows 7 machine in order to maintain my sanity! The video quality on the copied DVD disks was terrific, by the way. I'm very happy with them.I recommend this camcorder.

Comments about Panasonic HC-V550 Full HD Camcorder:

Bought the camcorder the last minute to video my son's wedding. Without much knowledge on how to use the camera it worked great during the rehearsal dinner & wedding. I bought a sandisk 32 GB SD card & was able to record the whole wedding (over 2 hrs) in 1080 high def. The sound was very good even with the loud music playing & videos were very good even with the low light situation. we are very happy with the results.

Comments about Panasonic HC-V550 Full HD Camcorder:

Here I am at 72, buying a Camcorder. My last one was a HI-8 and I gave it to my Daughter about 15 years ago. Since then, no Camcorder until the HC-V550.

It matches and supersedes the reviews. For me, it is easy to use and the powerful zoom is a wow!

BH's quick excellent recommendations and advice did not exceed salesman's "puff," and I've gone back because of their help, advice and quick service.

Comments about Panasonic HC-V550 Full HD Camcorder:

This is my third Panasonic camera (I use all three) and was thrilled to have a second video camera capable of shooting Time Lapse. How often when I have been shooting TL have I wished for a second camera that I could be using for a different TL set-up. The 550 camera is actually easier to set-up for TL than my professional Panasonic. Once you set it for what you want to do you don't need to return to the set-up menu and set it up again for the next TL shot. It also has a stop motion ability.
The 50X optical and 90X digital feature of the zoom lens is incredible. From the wide angle 28mm to the 90X zoom is an amazing range for a camera. This feature is also useful for capturing birds, flowers and other aspects of nature. It's much easier to shoot inside the center of a flower than my other two cameras.
Within the first 24 hours I photographed the moon with a shot that filled the frame and was well exposed in the automatic setting; I captured rain drops on plants after a storm (and during a storm); covered my grand-daughters school program in a room with mixed lighting and was able to get nice face close-up under less than favorable conditions; and did a Time Lapse of a back-lit dandy lion at sun set.
This should be an excellent camera for recording a record of family events and for the photographer who wants to explore his creative instincts it will offer him a lot of great options to do so.
To fully appreciate what this camera is capable of you'll want to explore the 200 plus instruction pages included on the pdf file. I printed it off and had it bound for easy referencing.
