Plastic filter threads, plastic barrel - who cares. Clear filter never gets removed anyway and I don't plan on dropping it… Wanted a slightly normal/wide perspective and low barrel distortion - Wanted a modern lens design with modern glass. No Nano coating but an ED element which gives it the contrast I wanted. So…I guess I like it.

This is now my main panorama lens on my D-810. I can stitch several frames together with no wide angle distortion. I have used it on several all day photo shoots on the Blue Ridge parkway and the results are excellent. Third party tech reviews say that this lens is optically superb.

This lens, hugely less expensive than the 35mm 1.4 Nikkor, performs extremely well with only one half stop less speed. It is as sharp as my other Nikkor prime lenses, and although it has seven diaphragm blades instead of the 1.4's nine it has great bokeh. I've published photos using it wide open with good results, happily.

Thanks to the B&H customer help, I bought this lens. It is perfect for what I need - there is little distortion - apparently it mimics to human eye. My images are super clear and clean, even in lowish light. This is the first lens I've ever bought and I'm very happy with it.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED Lens:

I got this lens to fill the void between the 28mm and the 50mm lenses that I already have. Like the others, it performs well and is light weight. Sharpness is good, especially when stopped down, but more than adequate wide open. The lens has little CA and focuses well. Nothing to complain about. I know that some users are concerned that the lens is made of non-metal, but so far it hasn't seemed poorly made and it should be more immune to small knocks than one made of metal. Don't know how it would survive a real shock, but I don't know how well any lens would do if dropped. I'm satisfied with the build quality.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED Lens:

I purchased this lens used from another photographer because it's on back order here. As a wedding photographer, over the years I've owned many 35mm FL prime lenses, such as Nikon AF-S 35 f/1.4G, Nikon 35 f/2D, Sigma Art 35 1.4, Carl Zeiss ZF 35/2, and I can say I really love this lens. Not only is its size/weight perfect, but at wide open it's as sharp as 1.4G at f/1.8 in center as well. It has less distortion than 1.4G does, which is another plus. The downside is some CA at wide open in high contrast scene but it's not as bad as Sigma. Its AF speed is faster and more accurate than 1.4G. If 1.4G and 1.8G were priced same, I still would choose this one. With today's high ISO digital capabilities on cameras, I don't really need 1.4 for speed anymore.

I had the 1.4G for over a year and the auto-focus for stills was too slow for my uses. I am using this primarily for video with the D4, but I've used it for both stills and video in the couple of weeks that I've owned it. What I needed was smooth manual focusing and this provides that. The stills look great as well. No issues to speak of.

I love this one, really sharp wide open with wonderful bokeh. I found that large aperture Nikkor lenses are horrible on DX bodies, but on FX they are truly amazing! Tack sharp street and landscape pics. A REAL winner!!

Bought this lens to complete a set of small primes for street photography. While bigger than my 20d and 50g 1.8, still smaller and less obtrusive than the sigma art 1.4. Focuses fast and silently. Not as sharp as the 85 1.8 but still good for my uses. After reading initial comparisons/reviews I expected A bit less, but was happily proven wrong.

I was looking for a light, wide, walk about FX lens for my Df so I didn't have to carry my 24-70 everywhere. This fits the bill and delivers pretty good quality. Pros - light weight, sharp and has good contrast. Cons - the light weight is because of all the plastic, so it isn't as solid as a good f1.4, but because it is taken everywhere I don't mind if it gets a few dings.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED Lens:

This lens was a long time coming, but worth waiting for. I do documentary work but that also involves some landscape work, so I like lenses that are sharp wide open and really sharp right to the edges stopped down a bit. This lens definitely fits the bill. The 35mm focal length has always been one of my favorites. Until now there were few good options--the old 35/2 was very soft in the corners, the 35/1.4G, which I think is an often underrated lens, is actually quite good but it is huge and expensive. I found the Sigma very sharp but the color and contrast never thrilled me. And the quality control is lacking, I tried three different lenses and all of them were soft in a different corner. The Zeiss 35/2 was great but heavy and MF only. The Zeiss was my choice until recently. This new Nikkor 35/1.8G is very sharp in the center, even wide open. The edges might have a bit less sharpness wide open, but at f/1.8 they probably won't be in focus anyway unless you're shooting brick walls. By f/2.8 the corners are extremely sharp and at f/5.6 it's extremely sharp right into the extreme corners. It's better than the Zeiss 35/2 at pretty much all apertures. I don't have the Sigma to compare it to side-by-side, but I'd say it compares favorably. The Nikon has a bit of color fringing, but not too much and it's better in this regard than the zeiss 35/2 (and similar or better than the Nikon 35/1.4).The distortion is not too bad either, normal for this kind of lens. Flare is very minimal, though I have managed to get some minor ghosting during torture tests, it actually has less flare than my zeiss 25/2.The AF is fast and accurate on my D800E bodies. This is a great lens for both documentary work/event work and also for landscapes. I won't hesitate to shoot it wide open when needed, but it sharpens up fast when you stop down. One note on the feel of the lens--this lens is plasticy like most of the recent G lenses. Frankly, I find even the expensive f/1.4 versions to feel a bit cheap and plasticy. Unless you want to shell out thousands for Leica glass, the days of the precision metal lenses seems to be over. I'd say this lens is better than the 28/1.8G. The 35 is a bit denser so it feels more solid, and the focus ring on the 35 is better, it doesn't have as much slop or play in the mechanism. The 35 doesn't feel quite as nice as my 85/1.8G.I'd hate to confuse the feel of a lens for build quality. Sure, the Sigma feels more solid, but I've heard lots of stories (and personally experienced) focus problems, decentering, etc. The Nikkors are light and they don't feel like precision optical instruments, but I've been using my 28G heavily for a while now and it has held up just fine. Also, when you travel and shoot for 12-hour days, a lightweight but high-quality lens is very much appreciated.

Given the recent track record of moderately priced Nikon f1.8G lens, I have to say my expectations were pretty high for this lens. All in all it measures up quite well to it's mates. If I were to rank Nikons prime f1.8 G FX lenses, this 35mm would fall in at a close second to the outstanding 85mm. Compared to the amazing Sigma 35mm f1.4, this lens is no match in terms of wide open sharpness and build quality, but considering the price, weight and size difference, I prefer this lens for my personal use though it was hard to let go of the solid, precision Sigma. The optimum apertures, like most primes are the mid range of f stops with it exhibiting excellent sharpness from f2.8-f8, but it does quite good at f2 and f11 as well.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED Lens:

This lens is quite sharp, though not as sharp as sigma 35mm, lightweight, focuses well. However the lens' constrast is not high, and not cheap, and not very rugged.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED Lens:

I have been waiting on a small, light, fast, and sharp 35mm FX option for a few years. In the meantime I have tried the 35mm f/2, 35mm f/1.4 G, and also tried to work with the 35mm f/1.8 G DX (which is partially usable on FX). The 35mm f/2 is not a terrible lens but not sharp wide open and has some funky bokeh. The 1.4 G is relatively heavy and also expensive while being a great performer. The 1.8 G DX is very sharp and light but vignettes heavily on FX (as expected). So I was very pleased to see the 1.8 G FX appear. It is relatively small (though no where near as small as the 35 f/2) and while it is light it does have a nice substantial feel to it which to me is important (it feels somewhere near the cheap build quality of the 50 1.8 G). It is also very sharp wide open, has consistent and accurate focus, and has extremely attractive bokeh (in my opinion). I use this mostly for family photography and it more than satisifes all my needs. I can't see how it wouldn't also meet the needs of professionals. It's another winner in Nikon's line of f/1.8 primes. Very happy to finally have this.
