The stone green Bataflae 32L Backpack from Gura Gear is a large pack for carrying photo gear. Its capacity is extreme. It can accommodate your pro DSLR with or without grip, a 500mm f/4 attached or up to an 800mm unattached with hood reversed. The interior contains fully adjustable touch fastened dividers. The 32L can also hold a medium format camera system or video camera bodies.

The unique facet of this pack is Gura's butterfly access system. These flaps come in handy when you don't want or can't open the entire pack-especially in crowded venues. They fold open in the middle exposing the interior without opening the entire bag. However, if you prefer to open the pack completely, pinch the buttons and the butterfly flaps release for a traditional opening.

Storage space is not a problem for the 32L. Expandable exterior mesh accessory pockets are matched by multiple interior mesh pockets. The front also has two full length pockets for even more accessories and even larger items such as your jacket. One of these pockets can be used for ID, tickets and passport. The pack makes use of traditional M.O.L.L.E. (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) side attachment points that contain side hooks for attaching extra pouches or gear. Your tripod can be attached at various points on the pack to suit your preference. A water bottle pocket will help keep you hydrated while traveling. For ultimate security, the main compartment is lockable using a user-supplied lock.

The harness system is stowaway in design and contains a removable waist belt. A top grab handle is for quick access moments. The handles are all riveted for strength. The zippers are color coded for enhanced organizational purposes and can be readily used while wearing gloves. The shoulder straps contain extra strong buckles. The pack is made from a combination of nylon, polyurethane and mesh. The zippers are all YKK.

For inclement weather, a rain cover is included that doubles as a ground cloth while pursuing location work. When the pack is not being used, place it inside the included dust bag that will keep it clean and fresh. The pack comes with Gura Gear's ultimate warranty for the workmanship that goes into this pack.

The Gura Gear Bataflae 32L is just about perfect. It can carry a 500mm while mounted on a pro full frame DSLR or a 600mm unmounted. along with the 500, I carry a 400mm 5.6, 70 - 200, 24 -70, two flashes and lots of small extras such as batteries, flash cards. Lugging all of that weight used to hurt my shoulders with other bags. The 32L has shoulder straps and belt that sits comfortably on the hips which distributes the weight evenly and reduces shoulder stress. All of this can be carried on board an aircraft - the 32L has dimensions which are 1 inch less than the maximum allowed by most major US airlines and federal restrictions. There are plenty of pockets, rain protection and points to attach a tripod. To carry any more you would need a personal assistant.

I have used several distinct types of cases. All were less than ideal for a number of reasons. Regrettably, I now add 'backpack' to that list. Both the initial struggle with the partitions and the very tiny unhelpful drawings used to describe setting up the harness soured me.

Comments about Bataflae 32L Backpack (Black):

This company really thought out the design and was meticulous as to the construction. Expensive bag - yes. But you definitely get what you paid to get. Outstanding. Zippers are rugged; butterfly design clever; pockets and dividers galore. Highly recommend.

Comments about Bataflae 32L Backpack (Stone Green):

I have 2 Nikon DSLR bodies, a few assorted lenses, including a 200-400, and a plethora of other accessories. The equipment is not cheap, and I had been precariously logging in an adequate backpack. The Bataflae Backpack fits all my gear and gives my the peace of mind that my gear is secured. It is a bit larger than I would ideally like to carry, but if it were smaller, I couldn't fit as much equipment.

Comments about Bataflae 32L Backpack (Stone Green):

I am an amateur photographer, but I like to travel all over the world to take photos. I have 2 Nikon DSLR bodies, and I usually have a few assorted lenses, chargers, monopod/tripod setups, etc.etc. I have suffered in the past with a camera bag stuffed inside a daypack for airline carry on...and it is ALWAYS awkward and fits poorly in the overheard bins. When I try to separate the bags to facilitate storage on the airline, some airlines claim I have too many carry ons. If I try to carry my camera gear securely, then I have no room on the plane for essential personal items. This bag EASILY solves this. No single bag can do it all, but for an upcoming trip to Africa (the 7th time we have done this), I will use this bag to get all my gear over there. I can carry a smaller daybag in the vehicle or on the walking/hiking trails we take. This bag has such a nice, sleek design and is literally 1 inch smaller in every dimension than the maximum legal carry on, so it really does hold a lot of gear along with personal items. Construction is rugged, but not heavy-handed. Lightweight, well-thought-out pockets and access flaps, with complete flap opening possible by unclipping one extra security buckle. It was NOT a cheap bag, but neither are my cameras...and I wanted the best to last for a long, long, time.

Comments about Bataflae 32L Backpack (Gray):

This bag is well built, holds a ton of gear, and carries well. I thought for as big as it is and with the amount of gear it holds, that it would be bulky and hard to carry. That is not at all the case, however. It is quite a comfortable and well-balanced carry. I like the extra handles on the top and sides as well.

Really, the only thing that I miss from this bag is the dedicated laptop storage. I know their reasoning behind eliminating it (read about it online), but I still would prefer to have that choice myself instead of someone else making it for me. There are legitimately times when I need to carry only one bag and need my laptop.

This bag is expensive, no doubt, and probably overpriced, but its awesome! Holds tons of gear and is actually wearable as a backpack (comfortable). Have not had a chance to fly with it, but like that it can pack up the harnesses to be streamlined. The only real improvement that I see could be made is an adjustable torso, like most backpacking packs.

Finally - a backpack that fits all my gear. My problem is- Do I want to carry it all. I have 2 bodies, and 3 lens (70-200, 24-70, 17-55) pls ocket wizards c, cables etc. when I put all this on the weight makes you want to rethink this. I like the bag, just take a little getting used to. Where did I put the cables, extra batteries. I will be doing quite a bit of travelling so fitting in overhead was important. I like everything solidly built, strong zippers, great material and the extra separators are a bonus. Great job.

Comments about Bataflae 32L Backpack (Gray):

I upgraded my prior bag, which I also like, because I was carrying quite a few large prime lenses to events and my prior bag wasn't big enough.

There is a lot to like about this bag. First among the likes it that it holds all of my gear including 300mm f/2.8 and 200mm f/2.0 among various smaller primes. I think it would also hold a 400mm f/2.8 that I've been thinking about.

On top of the capacity, the butterfly opening is a really good idea. I can open just one side to grab the gear I need while the other gear remains secure.

The bag is also right-sized. I see no problem carrying it onto an airplane, which was one of my considerations. The construction is light-weight and really well thought out ergonomically.

The harness is good and I like that you can detach the belt if you're not going to carry the pack for a long distance. It is also great that I can tuck the straps when not needed, e.g., when stowed on an airplane. I have another pack (Lowe) that has a slightly better harness that I use for my 4x5 camera but that pack is a lot heavier and needs every bit of adjustment I can muster. But the overall design of this pack is better than the Lowe. One think I never liked about the Lowe is that the is made to attach to the back of the pack and this puts a heavy bit hanging well away from the body. I sometimes would just carry the tripod on my shoulder to avoid the torque. The Bataflae changes this by mounting a tripod either on the back or side. Grant that the monopod or tripod I use with a 35mm dSLR is no where near the weight of the one I use with the 4x5 I still give a nod to the flexible design of the Bataflae.

Comments about Bataflae 32L Backpack (Gray):

First off, the Gray model that I chose is better than I thought it would be. I know it's only a colour choice but it just blends in better than the typical big, black photography backpack.

In my opinion using it as backpack is limited for a guy my size, I am 6'3" and roughly 240lbs. My height/weight is only a little above average so I am sure I am not the only one that feels this way. Fully loaded with my tripod (Gitzo GT3532LS) attached the bag weighs 26lbs which is kind of light compared to what some photographers carry. While the backpack rides high on my back (a good thing) it places the waist strap much too high and makes it unusable for a guy my size. It's great that the waist strap is removable. I took the pack with me on a very short hike and quickly found that I couldn't use it for that purpose, which for me isn't a problem. For packing it through an airport as a backpack I could see it as usable, otherwise not. Being able to tuck the straps away is a fantastic feature and makes the pack much more manageable.

A couple of attachments for a heavy-duty shoulder strap would be great and is something I mentioned to Gura Gear already.

The one carrying handle the is turned on an angle is brilliant. At first it felt kind of strange but after a while I have grown fond of this configuration. My wrist approves as well after carrying the pack for a distance!

For me the 'butterfly' flaps on the pack make this worth every penny. I really enjoy just opening one side to access the lenses/accessories I need. The zippers are quite stiff but I am told they will loosen up a little with time. The zipper pulls are colour coded which just saves that extra second when you quickly need to switch lenses etc.

Everything on this pack just screams quality. It is obvious this was designed by photographers. I have tried a lot of backpacks for the years from Lowepro, Tamrac, Kata, F-Stop etc and they were all sold after a month or two.

I bought this bag to hold ALL of my gear and it does just that, all of my gear is always with me. I select what gear I need depending on what I am shooting (landscapes, garden, macro etc) and put it in my Think Tank Photo Modular belt bags. It sits on the passenger seat of my truck unzipped and always ready to serve my needs. FYI, fully loaded this bag will activate your passenger seat seat-belt warning system... ;-)

Gura Gear customer service is excellent by the way, give them a call and find out for yourself before you buy.

All-in-all, I am pleased with this bag, it's expensive but I can tell it will last me for years and will adapt to my kit as it changes. I only gave it four stars because of the backpack 'issues' mentioned above. I wish it was as comfortable as my Arc'teryx backpack...maybe one day.

Comments about Bataflae 32L Backpack (Black):

For indoor gymnastics I carry several fast primes. The 32L gives me space for my 300mm f/2.8, 200mm f/2, 135mm f/2, 85mm f/1.2, 1.4x Extender III, and a general purpose 24-70 f/2.8 zoom almond with my 1Dx body, batteries and various accessories. And, there's room to spare.

I like the monopod in the side pocket.

At this time my carries are just a few blocks so I conveniently removed the waist belt. For hiking I'd use the belt to carry weight on the hips rather than the shoulders.

The bag is high quality throughout using ultralight materials. Overall a great addition to carry my kit.

Comments about Bataflae 32L Backpack (Black):

Comments about Bataflae 32L Backpack (Black):

I have used several distinct types of cases. All were less than ideal for a number of reasons. Regrettably, I now add 'backpack' to that list. Both the initial struggle with the partitions and the very tiny unhelpful drawings used to describe setting up the harness soured me.
