Comments about powerstation XL for Smartphones, Tablets & USB Devices (Black):

We have 2 iPhones & an iPad Air in our family. The recent bad weather prompted me to get the power station XL so that if we had a power cut, we'd still be able to access the web/ email for a number of days. Also useful for when I'm on the road making heavy usage of the iPhone for calls ... and in need of more power to get through the day.

I'd considered these type of units before, but read so many reviews where they had said they couldn't do a single iPad charge - so held back.

The XL doubles the power available from the previous top of the line model, claiming upto 8 full charges of an iPhone and able to hold 75% of the charge after 3 months - so sounded like a good time to jump in.

I've had the unit a few weeks now. It came ready charged right out of the box with 3 LEDs showing (75%). That charge managed to top up 2 iPhone 5's and an iPad Air - all from about 50% to 100% ... but that was it - no more juice.

The instructions for recharging the unit were very unclear. Sounds and looks simple (hook up via usb), there are 4 green LEDs that light up to show charging status - but nothing in the instructions to tell you what those LEDs mean.

I hooked it up to a Monster to go travel unit. The LEDs started blinking (1 light) for a few seconds then stopped. Nothing in the instructions to say what that meant. i thought it wasn't getting enough charge, so swapped out the Monster to go unit with a belkin travel unit. This time, all 4 LEDs started blinking ... and continued to blink - so I thought it must to be charging ok.

The next morning, those LEDs were still blinking after 10 hours, but when I unplugged it and pressed the button to see how many LEDs stayed on - it was zero. I checked the mophie website - no joy when looking up info for this model. Then I thought I'd check the instructions for the previous model to see if there was any further info. Bingo - an explanation for the LEDs.

Here's what you need to know: 4 LEDs blinking continuously means not enough power. You need a USB port with 2.1 amps to charge. When you have this, the LEDs start blinking with however much charge is left, or just a single LED if completely drained. After a few seconds, the blinking stops ... but it continues to charge.

Having gone through the cycle 3 or 4 times now, here's what to expect:

    * It takes 12 to 14 hours to charge your XL using a 2.1amp USB port from empty
    * Expect to get 1 full charge of an iPhone 5 and an iPad Air with 20% power left when charging both at the same time
    * When topping up devices from say 80% to 100%, expect to be able to do that around 3 times (2 iPhone 5's + an iPad Air)
    * Top up of an iPhone is fast. You can go from 70% to 100% in less than an hour

In short - glad I got this. Serves it's purpose - especially if you have an iPad in your mix of devices. But beware - documentation is poor - you need a 2.1amp usb source.
