I have several G-Drives - and especially like the mini-drives. All purchased from B&H. Very rugged and I have never had one fail. I also have a 2TB G-Drive same model as this. None of the G-Drives make noise. Period. No weird scratchy ratchet sounds when doing read/write. However, this 3TB made a constant ratchety sound -- call it hi-speed clicking - when doing its first write of a file. I immediately stopped the operation and then did the same file transfer - same connections - same computer with my older G-Drive 2TB. Quiet - just the sound of the disk spinning, which is normal. By sheer chance, I had purchased TWO of these 3TB units, so I also could do an immediate comparison with another 3TB G-Drive right out of the box. So I did the same file transfer, same computer and connections. Result: no noise. Whisper quiet. I did some research -- avoiding sites that whine about G-Tech experiences. I just checked what repair pros said about what cause drive sounds. Bottom line - ratchety sounds can be normal, but are usually associated with drives that tend to fail prematurely. Since G-Drives normally don't make sounds when doing read/write operations, I personally would not keep a G-Drive that was making hi-speed clicking noises when doing read/write. JMO.

I've loved G-Drives and have used them almost exclusively for years for video editing. I decided to upgrade to the Thunderbolt drive for my next one and was sorely disappointed. There is no daisy-chaining as there is only one Thunderbolt port and I had issues powering the drive even though it is powered by external power not the computer.

I love the FW800 / eSATA version of this drive and still highly recommend those. I'm sure their Thunderbolt drives will catch up but this is just too unreliable to be used professionally right now in my opinion.

      Comments about G-Technology 3TB G-Drive with Thunderbolt:

So far this has been great for my production needs. Thunderbolt makes everything run so much quicker. It takes at least half the time now to transfer data. One thing I think the retailers did on purpose, but is confusing the first time you use it, is that it won't turn on unless the thunderbolt cord is connected to the computer and the drive. Its a smart idea because if the drive is plugged in and on, if its not connected it won't just waste power. Its a little nerve-racking if you plug it in without knowing and try to turn it on before connecting to the computer- nothing happens. Knowing how the drive works, now makes everything easier and so much smoother.

I have been using USB drives for my media drives editing 4K video The pauses and stutters were driving me crazy and making decisions very difficult. All this changed with the greatly improved speed of the Thunderbolt connection and performance of the G-Technology drive.

        Comments about G-Technology 3TB G-Drive with Thunderbolt:

With stacks of hard drives I always feel more confident when I'm using a G-Drive. I've had issues with many including another brand of T-bolt drive.
This seems really fast and consistent. I'm editing video with FCPX on an iMac.

              Comments about G-Technology 3TB G-Drive with Thunderbolt:

Four stars only because it has one thunderbolt port (big advantage of thunderbolt is ability to daisy chain devices). Thunderbolt on a single drive may be overkill but if, like me, you only have usb2, FireWire, or thunderbolt ports than this is the way to go for max throughput.

This hard drive is large, relatively cheap and has a fast thunderbolt connection. I love it compared to firewire 800 version of the drive. The only reason it gets 4 stars and not 5 stars is that it only has one thunderbolt port, meaning you can't daisy chain additional thunderbolt drives or accessories. It does come with a thunderbolt cable and a usb3 cable which is very nice,

I've used G-Techs for almost everything. I use them at home and my company uses them as well.

I work in Video Production and Editing wich requires a lot of data movement and creating and deleting. The Thunderbolt drive works just as well as all others I've used before. The data rate is significantly faster transfering data, opening projects, and playing back footage.

It is just as noisy as the others I've had before but put it on a shelf or below the desk and it's no big problem.

The biggest issuse I have are the ports. With only 1 thunderbolt and 1 USB 3 port there really isn't an oportunity to daisy chain. But at 3TB the need to daisy chain might not be a neccesity until it's getting full.

A typical powered external harddrive. It was larger then I had thought, and it runs a bit on the noisy side, but it's fast, and has thunderbolt and usb 3.

However, I did opt for this drive because of the fan, the logic being is that it might last longer then a similar LACIE with no fan.

As with all mechanical drive, all we can do is hope that they last. And so far, three weeks in, we are good.

I haven't had a chance to use this with Thunderbolt yet, just USB3, but so far the drive is working well. It is louder then my Seagates, which I typically purchase. I had stopped using G-Tech drives because my last experience was not good. The cases were bent. There was clearly a manufacturing problem as multiple drives rocked back and forth on a known flat surface. I purchased a 4TB USB3 G-Tech drive at the same time as this 3TB. These are being used as a temporary solution to a problematic RAID setup I have.

Affordable, extremely fast backup drives. I was weary of reading some outside reviews, but the drives have withstood a lot of work and prolonged use.

                                Comments about G-Technology 3TB G-Drive with Thunderbolt:

We needed some extra storage for current projects and decided to go with this since it's reasonably priced and we have other G-Technology drives that have given reliable service.

This one seems to work well, although it takes a few seconds to spin up from 'sleep' mode. I've also noticed a couple of weird things happening with Display Arrangement on my MacBook Pro when using using an additional monitor while the drive is connected but I can't prove its the drive and its nothing serious.

                                    Comments about G-Technology 3TB G-Drive with Thunderbolt:

JMO.
