The silver Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera is a compact point-and-shoot digital camera featuring an 18.1MP High Sensitivity MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor to enable high-resolution still imaging and full HD 1080p video recording with marked low-light quality and sensitivity to an expandable ISO 6400. Fast performance is also afforded throughout the camera system, including the ability to record full-resolution imagery at up to 10 fps or 5 fps with continuous AF.

Complementing the imaging performance of the camera is the built-in Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x optical zoom lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-720mm to suit working in a wide variety of situations. Aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements help to produce sharp, high contrast imagery and also work to minimize aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range. Benefitting the extensive zooming capabilities of this lens is HYBRID O.I.S.+ image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake to better support working with greater zoom magnifications or longer shutter speeds.

For live view monitoring and image review, both a large 3.0" 920k-dot LCD screen and 0.2" 200k-dot electronic viewfinder are available. These viewing means also provide intuitive menu navigation for applying a host of camera settings, including Creative Control modes and Creative Panorama, as well as accessing the built-in Wi-Fi functionality with GPS capabilities. This connectivity enables instant transferring of photos or movies to linked mobile devices, remote shooting and viewing, and geotagging abilities. Further rounding out the versatile design of the camera is a Control Ring, which surrounds the lens to provide intuitive and efficient access and adjustment to some of the most oft-used camera settings and features.

18.1MP High Sensitivity MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
An 18.1 megapixel 1/2.3" High Sensitivity MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor work together to produce high-resolution imagery with notable low-light sensitivity to an expanded ISO 6400. The combination of these two technologies also results in an excellent signal-to-noise ratio to realize imagery with a high degree of clarity and minimal noise. Image recording in a RAW file format is also possible in order to render imagery with greater detail and information for a more advanced post-processing workflow. The imaging system also affords a wealth of speed and performance throughout the camera system including a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 10 fps and 5 fps shooting with continuous AF.

Additionally, the processor contributes to a quick start-up time and the Light Speed AF system, which features a high-speed 240 fps actuator for the AF drive to produce faster focusing performance throughout the zoom range.
Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x Optical Zoom Lens
A tremendously long-reaching Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-720mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit shooting from nearly any vantage point. Extending the magnification of this lens even further are Intelligent Zoom and Extra Optical Zoom (EZ) technologies, which work to effectively increase the zoom ratio even further with minimal image degradation.

The lens construction integrates five aspherical elements, with 10 aspherical surfaces, and three extra-low dispersion elements to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness and clarity.
HYBRID O.I.S.+ and Level Shot Function
HYBRID O.I.S.+ (Optical Image Stabilizer) works to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting with longer shutter speeds or greater zoom magnifications in order to realize stable, sharp, and clear imagery. When recording video, this stabilization system effectively compensates for five types of camera movements-horizontal, vertical, axis of rotation, vertical rotation, and horizontal rotation-to render video in a smooth and realistic manner.

Additionally, the Level Shot Function can automatically detect the horizontal line of the recording image and keep it level during recording, regardless of camera tilt, helping to achieve greater shooting stability.
Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1080p video recording is supported in multiple frame rates up to 60 fps in the high-quality AVCHD Progressive format or 30 fps in the Internet-friendly MP4 format. An onboard stereo microphone is incorporated into the camera's design to render clear-sounding audio with suppressed mechanical noise and, with the inclusion of an Auto Wind Cut function, lessened background noise.

The full 30x range of the optical zoom lens can be used during movie recording, which benefits from the HYBRID O.I.S.+ system to render smooth, shake-free videos. Additionally, high-speed HD 720p movie recording is possible with a sensor output frame rate of 120 fps.
Camera Design
Within the compact overall form of the camera is both a large 3.0" 920k-dot LCD monitor, with anti-reflective coating, and a 0.2" 200k-dot LVF (Live View Finder) for bright, clear monitoring, review, and menu navigation. The electronic viewfinder features 100% frame coverage and can be set to provide a 60 fps refresh rate for clearer viewing of fast-moving subjects.

Also offering versatility during use is a Control Ring, which surrounds the lens, and offers intuitive, tactile control over some of the most frequently used camera settings, such as manual focusing, zoom, aperture, shutter speed, and Creative Control filter selections. When working with manual focus, focus peaking is available to highlight edges of contrast to aid in achieving precisely-focused imagery. Benefitting image composition, a series of guides can be used during shooting with either the LCD or LVF, including: Rule of Thirds Offset, Diagonal Lines, Tunnel, Radiation 1, Radiation 2, and S-shape. Additionally, an electronic level gauge is available to help with precise alignment of horizontal and vertical lines during shooting.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity and GPS
The camera can quickly and easily be linked to mobile devices using NFC (Near Field Communication) or an intuitive QR code system, which can be recognized on the mobile device when using the Panasonic Image App to scan the code. Once connected, remote shooting and viewing, as well as image transferring and sharing, can be efficiently handled.

  • Remote Shooting/Remote View: Using your linked mobile device, a live view image can be seen at a distance from the camera and zooming, setting focus, releasing the shutter, and recording settings like exposure compensation can all be controlled from a smartphone or tablet.
  • Wi-Fi Features: Photos and videos, as well as Photo Collages, can instantly be uploaded and shared to a range of social networking sites, such as Facebook, Flickr, and Picasa.
  • Wireless Image Transfer: The Instant Transfer function permits direct, automated sending of imagery to designated electronic devices after each exposure. You can also send imagery when in playback mode by simply tapping on the desired images. The Auto Transfer function further extends these capabilities by automatically transferring all imagery to a home computer or other compliant device when the camera is plugged in for charging and within a specified wireless network.
  • Built-in GPS complies with GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) to enhance detection accuracy for refined geotagging capabilities. This enables displaying of the name of the Country/Region, State/Province, Country/Township, City/Town/Village, and Landmark using internal data to give real-time information of your current setting while taking photos.
  • Other Camera Features
    • iA (Intelligent Auto) mode automatically sets all camera exposure settings using a variety of shooting-assist functions, such as i-Food mode and Intelligent Handheld Night Shot, to clearly render the scene at hand, allowing you to simply compose and shoot. Furthermore, iA Plus mode lets you adjust background defocusing, exposure compensation, and white balance settings for even more control.
    • Creative Control provides 15 different filter effects for modifying the appearance of your images: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Star Filter, and One Point Color. Additionally, many of these filters can be used during video recording.
    • Creative Panorama mode automatically stitches together multiple images taken while swiveling the camera in order to realize one wide-spanning horizontal or vertical image.
    • The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery can be conveniently charged in-camera using either an AC or USB power source and allows approximately 350 images to be recorded per charge.
    • Language support: English and Spanish.

An amazing camera, I had been watching and waiting for this one and bought one as soon as they were offered. The view finder and RAW and the long tele has made this a totally professional travel camera. Bought a 2nd one for my wife for the Morocco tour I am on now, she loves it and with the brightness out here the view finder allows her to take all the photos she sees. I switch from P mode to others in a click to B+W and HDR the photos are sharp and stunning... I took a full moon photo yesterday from a camp in a Sahara with ZS 40 on a tripod on wood table.. and 10 sec timer count down and 720 mm and captured the moon perfectly with the craters showing up wow.. I have this camera on me at all times and have shot twice as many images with it than the big Canon I brought along

I use a Nikon D4S for most of my photography. However, I don't like to take my D4 everywhere I go. This Lumix is great for my on-the-go needs. You never know when the perfect image will present iteself. This is a great little camera to have with you in those circumstances.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this camera since it is a super zoom of 30X optical length and has an EVF with a diopter adjustment. Don't have to worry about sunlight washout of an LCD anymore. This will supplement, and probably replace, my bridge camera -- also bought through B&H. The focus-to-shutter release is on par with the best bridge and compact cameras. It may not be as fast as a pro DSLR, but I am not disappointed. I use an SDHC Class 10 card from a very reputable, name-brand company. The zoom speed is perfect. The panoramic setting is fantastic and the best one I have ever used. Since I rarely print pictures but compile slide shows, I probably will use this feature a lot. My wife and I travel all over the United States, and being able to easily capture the panoramic vistas is going to be exciting. This Function button is simple to use with meaningful descriptions of what each function entails. The selector dial has more features than I will probably use, but I am glad they are there. I mostly shoot in Automatic or Program mode -- at least in the past. The locking lever on the battery/SD card cover is a great idea that latches tight. Don't have to power slide the cover as in some cameras. I won't use the GPS feature and doubt if I'll use the WiFi; but it is nice that it is included. You will not get a separate battery charger which is a must, IMHO; so with B&H's free $50 Gift Card, I bought one and also a spare battery. The battery is the only "weakest link" for this camera that I have found so far.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Silver):

This is my third Lumix and they just keep getting better. Originally I had ordered it from Panasonic, they delayed my order and it took several emails and phone calls before I could find out what was going on. I was finally (and rudely) told I'd have it in two to three weeks. I was so unimpressed with their customer service that I was tempted to buy a different brand. I cancelled my order and ordered it through B&H - had it in two days!!

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Silver):

I purchased this camera to replace a Lumix DMC-ZS19 camera which I dropped and broke on a trip this past October. I had been very happy with the ZS19 and hoped this new model would be as good. It is GREAT! It has several improvements. The most important to me has been the electronic viewfinder. I was worried about it's small size, but the viewfinder is bright and works fine even though I wear glasses. It takes very sharp pictures and I am looking forward to experimenting with RAW images something else which the ZS19 did not have.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Silver):

While the camera can be used as a "point & shoot" it has most of the control features you would expect to find on a DSLR. Small size makes it a versatile camera for travel when I don't want to bother carrying my heavy DSLR. I especially like that the camera has a viewfinder that is very useful when bright sunlight makes the rear display screen difficult to see. Camera has an exceptional long optical telephoto capability which is also really great for a travel camera. If looking for a full featured camera for travel, this is it!

The camera seems to meet the purpose for which I acquired it -- a small point and shoot camera with good lens and features for travel. The camera's written manual is not particularly useful in answering questions I had. I haven't checked the online manual yet and hope it is more helpful.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

The zoom capabilities are awesome on this camera, and I am satisfied with the ease of changing the settings when shooting in manual mode without having to dip into some digital menu. It's all right there with the turning of the large lens ring and the wheel around the menu button. I like where the buttons are and where the flash is. Everything feels solid and built to last. My biggest complaint is the noise I find in the photos even at ISO 100. I was hoping for sharper, cleaner edges. It's only noticeable when you zoom in while viewing on your computer, though. I find the auto focus is somewhat slow as well. Generally speaking I am well pleased, though. The video looks really good to my eye.

I need a pocket camera that has a good zoom. It seems a tourist can never get as close as one wants for some shots because of barriers to keep people away and this camera seems to be the solution. It's the first camera I've had that connects to wifi. I want to connect to my computer to download my photos but I'm having some difficulty doing so. I'm looking for a case that still allows this camera to be put in my pocket. I'm concerned how fragile the lens shield may be if left unprotected. All in all I really like this camera. I'm working my way through the various setting and find no fault with any so far. Getting a gift card has lowered the ultimate price for me as I can get an extra battery and case with the card that was included.

Bought it to replace my Lumix DMC ZS1 which has been my pocket camera for past three or four years. Looks to be a nice improvement with only a slight increase in size. Still fits in my pocket, even my jeans with just a little bulge. It's getting so I hardly ever use my big rig anymore. I used to shoot for a living and this takes me back to my Leica rangefinder days.

This is the best camera I've owned, I'm not a professional or anything. It has great zoom, and I love the viewfinder for use outside in the sun. It's a great buy, I waited a long time to get something portable that is better than my phone camera and this fit the bill. Highly recommend.

This camera good reviews from CR compared to cameras costing twice as much at under $400 with a $50 gift card. The Best B&H deal ever.

I have bought 2 of this model. My daughter, the former girlfriend of a photoindustry pro, learned a great deal from her several years relationship with him. Having completed a trip to Tuscany, and putting some of my favorite shots in a picture album, she literally was accusing me of using someone else's work, not my own. But, months before buying it, I downloaded from Panasonic's site the PDF manual explaining the advanced features, and I bought a book, Confessions of a Point and Shoot Camera User (I may have the title off a bit, but, it's close) and read it completely through as well before having bought the camera. Why the reading? I'm not a pro. Other than disposable cameras, this is the first camera I bought for me, not my wife. The camera is great. But, if you're not a pro, do your homework first, then, this camera will have friends/family accusing you of using someone else's work! The one thing that I don't like is that the camera does not appear to shoot RAW if in IA mode. You see, I also bought Photoshop Elements 12, and some training videos for PE12, with the idea of using it for photoshoping RAW files. So, if I shoot in IA mode, there seems to be no RAW shots, only JPEG.
