Questions? Ask our experts:

The silver Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera is a compact point-and-shoot digital camera featuring an 18.1MP High Sensitivity MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor to enable high-resolution still imaging and full HD 1080p video recording with marked low-light quality and sensitivity to an expandable ISO 6400. Fast performance is also afforded throughout the camera system, including the ability to record full-resolution imagery at up to 10 fps or 5 fps with continuous AF.

Complementing the imaging performance of the camera is the built-in Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x optical zoom lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-720mm to suit working in a wide variety of situations. Aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements help to produce sharp, high contrast imagery and also work to minimize aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range. Benefitting the extensive zooming capabilities of this lens is HYBRID O.I.S.+ image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake to better support working with greater zoom magnifications or longer shutter speeds.

For live view monitoring and image review, both a large 3.0" 920k-dot LCD screen and 0.2" 200k-dot electronic viewfinder are available. These viewing means also provide intuitive menu navigation for applying a host of camera settings, including Creative Control modes and Creative Panorama, as well as accessing the built-in Wi-Fi functionality with GPS capabilities. This connectivity enables instant transferring of photos or movies to linked mobile devices, remote shooting and viewing, and geotagging abilities. Further rounding out the versatile design of the camera is a Control Ring, which surrounds the lens to provide intuitive and efficient access and adjustment to some of the most oft-used camera settings and features.

18.1MP High Sensitivity MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
An 18.1 megapixel 1/2.3" High Sensitivity MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor work together to produce high-resolution imagery with notable low-light sensitivity to an expanded ISO 6400. The combination of these two technologies also results in an excellent signal-to-noise ratio to realize imagery with a high degree of clarity and minimal noise. Image recording in a RAW file format is also possible in order to render imagery with greater detail and information for a more advanced post-processing workflow. The imaging system also affords a wealth of speed and performance throughout the camera system including a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 10 fps and 5 fps shooting with continuous AF.

Additionally, the processor contributes to a quick start-up time and the Light Speed AF system, which features a high-speed 240 fps actuator for the AF drive to produce faster focusing performance throughout the zoom range.
Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x Optical Zoom Lens
A tremendously long-reaching Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-720mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit shooting from nearly any vantage point. Extending the magnification of this lens even further are Intelligent Zoom and Extra Optical Zoom (EZ) technologies, which work to effectively increase the zoom ratio even further with minimal image degradation.

The lens construction integrates five aspherical elements, with 10 aspherical surfaces, and three extra-low dispersion elements to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness and clarity.
HYBRID O.I.S.+ and Level Shot Function
HYBRID O.I.S.+ (Optical Image Stabilizer) works to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting with longer shutter speeds or greater zoom magnifications in order to realize stable, sharp, and clear imagery. When recording video, this stabilization system effectively compensates for five types of camera movements-horizontal, vertical, axis of rotation, vertical rotation, and horizontal rotation-to render video in a smooth and realistic manner.

Additionally, the Level Shot Function can automatically detect the horizontal line of the recording image and keep it level during recording, regardless of camera tilt, helping to achieve greater shooting stability.
Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1080p video recording is supported in multiple frame rates up to 60 fps in the high-quality AVCHD Progressive format or 30 fps in the Internet-friendly MP4 format. An onboard stereo microphone is incorporated into the camera's design to render clear-sounding audio with suppressed mechanical noise and, with the inclusion of an Auto Wind Cut function, lessened background noise.

The full 30x range of the optical zoom lens can be used during movie recording, which benefits from the HYBRID O.I.S.+ system to render smooth, shake-free videos. Additionally, high-speed HD 720p movie recording is possible with a sensor output frame rate of 120 fps.
Camera Design
Within the compact overall form of the camera is both a large 3.0" 920k-dot LCD monitor, with anti-reflective coating, and a 0.2" 200k-dot LVF (Live View Finder) for bright, clear monitoring, review, and menu navigation. The electronic viewfinder features 100% frame coverage and can be set to provide a 60 fps refresh rate for clearer viewing of fast-moving subjects.

Also offering versatility during use is a Control Ring, which surrounds the lens, and offers intuitive, tactile control over some of the most frequently used camera settings, such as manual focusing, zoom, aperture, shutter speed, and Creative Control filter selections. When working with manual focus, focus peaking is available to highlight edges of contrast to aid in achieving precisely-focused imagery. Benefitting image composition, a series of guides can be used during shooting with either the LCD or LVF, including: Rule of Thirds Offset, Diagonal Lines, Tunnel, Radiation 1, Radiation 2, and S-shape. Additionally, an electronic level gauge is available to help with precise alignment of horizontal and vertical lines during shooting.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity and GPS
The camera can quickly and easily be linked to mobile devices using NFC (Near Field Communication) or an intuitive QR code system, which can be recognized on the mobile device when using the Panasonic Image App to scan the code. Once connected, remote shooting and viewing, as well as image transferring and sharing, can be efficiently handled.

  • Remote Shooting/Remote View: Using your linked mobile device, a live view image can be seen at a distance from the camera and zooming, setting focus, releasing the shutter, and recording settings like exposure compensation can all be controlled from a smartphone or tablet.
  • Wi-Fi Features: Photos and videos, as well as Photo Collages, can instantly be uploaded and shared to a range of social networking sites, such as Facebook, Flickr, and Picasa.
  • Wireless Image Transfer: The Instant Transfer function permits direct, automated sending of imagery to designated electronic devices after each exposure. You can also send imagery when in playback mode by simply tapping on the desired images. The Auto Transfer function further extends these capabilities by automatically transferring all imagery to a home computer or other compliant device when the camera is plugged in for charging and within a specified wireless network.
  • Built-in GPS complies with GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) to enhance detection accuracy for refined geotagging capabilities. This enables displaying of the name of the Country/Region, State/Province, Country/Township, City/Town/Village, and Landmark using internal data to give real-time information of your current setting while taking photos.
  • Other Camera Features
    • iA (Intelligent Auto) mode automatically sets all camera exposure settings using a variety of shooting-assist functions, such as i-Food mode and Intelligent Handheld Night Shot, to clearly render the scene at hand, allowing you to simply compose and shoot. Furthermore, iA Plus mode lets you adjust background defocusing, exposure compensation, and white balance settings for even more control.
    • Creative Control provides 15 different filter effects for modifying the appearance of your images: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Star Filter, and One Point Color. Additionally, many of these filters can be used during video recording.
    • Creative Panorama mode automatically stitches together multiple images taken while swiveling the camera in order to realize one wide-spanning horizontal or vertical image.
    • The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery can be conveniently charged in-camera using either an AC or USB power source and allows approximately 350 images to be recorded per charge.
    • Language support: English and Spanish.

I purchased this camera in anticipation of a trip to northwest Wyoming to visit family in Jackson Hole, and to visit nearby locations including the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Cody, and the Rimrock Dude Ranch. I was hoping to find a compact camera with a great optical zoom and excellent video features (1080p, 60fps, stereo) so that I could leave my HD camcorder and DSLR at home. I had searched for such a camera a couple of years ago, but did not find one at that time that would be suitable to capture stills and video of an expensive trip. This time around, I was expecting to purchase a Canon. However, when I did my homework, I found this Panasonic ZS40 which has better features than the competing Canon, the electronic view finder being one of them. In anticipation of taking a fair bit of HD video, I decided to purchase 2 spare batteries. That was a good decision as I was swapping the batteries as necessary throughout the days. One significant surprise was that I could get 60x zoom without significant degradation of the images having turned on the iZoom feature, even without using a tripod. The videos that were captured in difficult situations (e.g. on horseback using one hand to hold and operate the camera) are somewhat jerky for sure, but they are watchable. For those who want a convenient compact camera to use in all sorts of situations without a tripod, then this camera is a good choice. My ultimate goal was to capture the essence of our trip to northwest Wyoming, especially the grandeur of the scenery, and that goal was accomplished. In short, I'm very glad that I purchased this camera. I could not have captured the stunning images of the Grand Tetons from a distance otherwise, especially without using a tripod. The Intelligent Auto mode made the camera simple to operate with great images and videos.

I believe I made a mistake on this review. The topic is aspect ratio:sensor size. I meant the 18MP applies only to aspect ratio of 4:3 which is my usual ratio, but those who prefer 3:2 will have to settle for 16MP. Either eliminate that sentence or edit accordingly. Thank you. ~ Kazi from San Jose, CA

Comments about Lumix DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

n the first few hours of ownership of this camera, I was totally overwhelmed. First, the owner's manual had 329 pages to read. It's 6 pages of indices! As I found how point and shooters are blesses with these wonderful devices and could accomplish what the other SLR shooters had to spend hours in post processing, I almost gave up on my 3 DSLRs. Its amazing features include GPS (with restrictions, of course), 3D, Panorama, HDR (high dynamic range) and Creative, all done in-camera! And the quality in even hand-holding is unbelievably good. The zoom range up to 30x (129mm, see the dragonfly photo) is acceptably sharp; image stabilizer works wonderfully; low light situation is no problem; bright LCD; EVF for too bright a day shooting; sensitive 16 - 18 MP sensor; RAW recording capability; etc, etc. I've had this camera only a month and tried all the above features, though I think I barely scratched the surface. It feels good in my hand, slips into my pocket comfortably.

There are a few minor downsides: 18PM sensor does not apply to aspect ratio of 4:3, usually my choice; 3D images are viewable on 3D-supported TV set; and precautions must be read for GPS use. The RAW recording is the feature I use with all my DSLRs, and my earlier version of Lumix FZ35, but RAW images taken with this camera cannot be processed with my current system; it requires an extra software. The huge Owner's Manual is daunting to navigate. If it's more interactive by providing where the owner can type in the subject to find the page for an answer, it would be helpful.

All attached photos were taken handheld, flash disabled.

I like taking this camera when we are going to be jumping on and off tour buses or making a lot of stops.

I like the fact that I can shoot in manual and RAW but I still have the opportunity to put it on point-and-shoot mode when I am in a hurry or handing it off to someone else.

I know there are options that I have yet to discover but so far this is working out well for my purposes.

I like the fact that you can customize many of the controls. Great feature.

I mostly use my larger Canon Cameras and got this for my wife...I almost feel like getting another for myself, I like the size for just packing around 24/7 and the fact that it's 18mp and can shoot RAW.

              Like I said...Great Little Camera!!!

Comments about Lumix DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this camera because I wanted a camera with an EVF that was small enough to wear on my belt. I suspect that I shall never use all the features, certainly not RAW, but in a few weeks of ownership I have already taken advantage of many of them.
I am impressed with how well the stabilization works at extreme focal length. Because of the large pixel count I have been able to crop a small imagr from the scene and make a large well-composed image.

I Use as pocket camera on walks in wooded areas. Mostly wildelife pics & video. The viewfinder puts this camera head of class for a pocket camera. Great pictures and options. With a little larger viewfinder it would be 5 star

This is a camera that has all the options including peaking focus to a great telephoto Leica lens. The live view is excellent especially in certain sunny conditions. It's small enough that you can put it in your pocket and it will always be with you. Excellent in every respect.

Comments about Lumix DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

It is one of only several P&S cameras that have RAW capture, Shutter or Aperture Priority, and GPS. That is why I bought the camera. The lack of shutter prioriy results in many a blured image with point and shoot cameras as they adjust the shutter speed with aperture priority as the only option and this results in slower than needed shutter speeds and blurred pictures.

The camera can be set to capture as RAW, JPRG, or both when shooting as well as video. Very easy to start and stop the video.

Macro mode works very well for extreme closeups of subjects.

Only major con is the GPS which needs to be turned off through the settings or it stays on even when the camera is switched off and the lack of accuracy. I shot along a property line for a distance of 75 yards and then plotted the GPS readings from the pictures. Half the GPS readings were off by as much as 150 feet.

I have a less expensive Nikon AW120 and it is very accurate and even has a digital compass so it shows the direction faced when a picture was taken. It lacks Shutter Priority which is why I bought the DMC-ZS40 camera. So neither camera does what I need and it is back to using a DSLR instead.

My main cameras are a Nikon D4s and a Nikon D810. I bought the Panasonic to always have a camera in my pocket. It serves its purpose very well. Its convenient to carry, easy to learn, works silently, has a long zoom and an electronic viewfinder. The pictures are more than acceptable as is the battery life.

I've only had this camera a couple of weeks. It seems terrific. I had its predessor, the ZS 20 for a couple of years. This one is a little different; better with features: a little larger, more zoom, wi-fi. The main thing is the quality of the photos, and I need more data on that for an important review like this.
