The silver Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera is a compact point-and-shoot digital camera featuring an 18.1MP High Sensitivity MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor to enable high-resolution still imaging and full HD 1080p video recording with marked low-light quality and sensitivity to an expandable ISO 6400. Fast performance is also afforded throughout the camera system, including the ability to record full-resolution imagery at up to 10 fps or 5 fps with continuous AF.

Complementing the imaging performance of the camera is the built-in Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x optical zoom lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-720mm to suit working in a wide variety of situations. Aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements help to produce sharp, high contrast imagery and also work to minimize aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range. Benefitting the extensive zooming capabilities of this lens is HYBRID O.I.S.+ image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake to better support working with greater zoom magnifications or longer shutter speeds.

For live view monitoring and image review, both a large 3.0" 920k-dot LCD screen and 0.2" 200k-dot electronic viewfinder are available. These viewing means also provide intuitive menu navigation for applying a host of camera settings, including Creative Control modes and Creative Panorama, as well as accessing the built-in Wi-Fi functionality with GPS capabilities. This connectivity enables instant transferring of photos or movies to linked mobile devices, remote shooting and viewing, and geotagging abilities. Further rounding out the versatile design of the camera is a Control Ring, which surrounds the lens to provide intuitive and efficient access and adjustment to some of the most oft-used camera settings and features.

18.1MP High Sensitivity MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
An 18.1 megapixel 1/2.3" High Sensitivity MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor work together to produce high-resolution imagery with notable low-light sensitivity to an expanded ISO 6400. The combination of these two technologies also results in an excellent signal-to-noise ratio to realize imagery with a high degree of clarity and minimal noise. Image recording in a RAW file format is also possible in order to render imagery with greater detail and information for a more advanced post-processing workflow. The imaging system also affords a wealth of speed and performance throughout the camera system including a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 10 fps and 5 fps shooting with continuous AF.

Additionally, the processor contributes to a quick start-up time and the Light Speed AF system, which features a high-speed 240 fps actuator for the AF drive to produce faster focusing performance throughout the zoom range.
Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x Optical Zoom Lens
A tremendously long-reaching Leica DC Vario-Elmar 30x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-720mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives to suit shooting from nearly any vantage point. Extending the magnification of this lens even further are Intelligent Zoom and Extra Optical Zoom (EZ) technologies, which work to effectively increase the zoom ratio even further with minimal image degradation.

The lens construction integrates five aspherical elements, with 10 aspherical surfaces, and three extra-low dispersion elements to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness and clarity.
HYBRID O.I.S.+ and Level Shot Function
HYBRID O.I.S.+ (Optical Image Stabilizer) works to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting with longer shutter speeds or greater zoom magnifications in order to realize stable, sharp, and clear imagery. When recording video, this stabilization system effectively compensates for five types of camera movements-horizontal, vertical, axis of rotation, vertical rotation, and horizontal rotation-to render video in a smooth and realistic manner.

Additionally, the Level Shot Function can automatically detect the horizontal line of the recording image and keep it level during recording, regardless of camera tilt, helping to achieve greater shooting stability.
Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1080p video recording is supported in multiple frame rates up to 60 fps in the high-quality AVCHD Progressive format or 30 fps in the Internet-friendly MP4 format. An onboard stereo microphone is incorporated into the camera's design to render clear-sounding audio with suppressed mechanical noise and, with the inclusion of an Auto Wind Cut function, lessened background noise.

The full 30x range of the optical zoom lens can be used during movie recording, which benefits from the HYBRID O.I.S.+ system to render smooth, shake-free videos. Additionally, high-speed HD 720p movie recording is possible with a sensor output frame rate of 120 fps.
Camera Design
Within the compact overall form of the camera is both a large 3.0" 920k-dot LCD monitor, with anti-reflective coating, and a 0.2" 200k-dot LVF (Live View Finder) for bright, clear monitoring, review, and menu navigation. The electronic viewfinder features 100% frame coverage and can be set to provide a 60 fps refresh rate for clearer viewing of fast-moving subjects.

Also offering versatility during use is a Control Ring, which surrounds the lens, and offers intuitive, tactile control over some of the most frequently used camera settings, such as manual focusing, zoom, aperture, shutter speed, and Creative Control filter selections. When working with manual focus, focus peaking is available to highlight edges of contrast to aid in achieving precisely-focused imagery. Benefitting image composition, a series of guides can be used during shooting with either the LCD or LVF, including: Rule of Thirds Offset, Diagonal Lines, Tunnel, Radiation 1, Radiation 2, and S-shape. Additionally, an electronic level gauge is available to help with precise alignment of horizontal and vertical lines during shooting.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity and GPS
The camera can quickly and easily be linked to mobile devices using NFC (Near Field Communication) or an intuitive QR code system, which can be recognized on the mobile device when using the Panasonic Image App to scan the code. Once connected, remote shooting and viewing, as well as image transferring and sharing, can be efficiently handled.

  • Remote Shooting/Remote View: Using your linked mobile device, a live view image can be seen at a distance from the camera and zooming, setting focus, releasing the shutter, and recording settings like exposure compensation can all be controlled from a smartphone or tablet.
  • Wi-Fi Features: Photos and videos, as well as Photo Collages, can instantly be uploaded and shared to a range of social networking sites, such as Facebook, Flickr, and Picasa.
  • Wireless Image Transfer: The Instant Transfer function permits direct, automated sending of imagery to designated electronic devices after each exposure. You can also send imagery when in playback mode by simply tapping on the desired images. The Auto Transfer function further extends these capabilities by automatically transferring all imagery to a home computer or other compliant device when the camera is plugged in for charging and within a specified wireless network.
  • Built-in GPS complies with GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) to enhance detection accuracy for refined geotagging capabilities. This enables displaying of the name of the Country/Region, State/Province, Country/Township, City/Town/Village, and Landmark using internal data to give real-time information of your current setting while taking photos.
  • Other Camera Features
    • iA (Intelligent Auto) mode automatically sets all camera exposure settings using a variety of shooting-assist functions, such as i-Food mode and Intelligent Handheld Night Shot, to clearly render the scene at hand, allowing you to simply compose and shoot. Furthermore, iA Plus mode lets you adjust background defocusing, exposure compensation, and white balance settings for even more control.
    • Creative Control provides 15 different filter effects for modifying the appearance of your images: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Star Filter, and One Point Color. Additionally, many of these filters can be used during video recording.
    • Creative Panorama mode automatically stitches together multiple images taken while swiveling the camera in order to realize one wide-spanning horizontal or vertical image.
    • The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery can be conveniently charged in-camera using either an AC or USB power source and allows approximately 350 images to be recorded per charge.
    • Language support: English and Spanish.

An amazing camera, I had been watching and waiting for this one and bought one as soon as they were offered. The view finder and RAW and the long tele has made this a totally professional travel camera. Bought a 2nd one for my wife for the Morocco tour I am on now, she loves it and with the brightness out here the view finder allows her to take all the photos she sees. I switch from P mode to others in a click to B+W and HDR the photos are sharp and stunning... I took a full moon photo yesterday from a camp in a Sahara with ZS 40 on a tripod on wood table.. and 10 sec timer count down and 720 mm and captured the moon perfectly with the craters showing up wow.. I have this camera on me at all times and have shot twice as many images with it than the big Canon I brought along

it is a vacation 2nd camera along with my dslr.good picture quality for day with iso lower than 800, 1600 is acceptable, but on top is really noisythe backlight post process is a weird and provide an over processed image. the night shots are good for a small sensor, and it has good black levels.

I have NO experience with cameras but this camera is amazing. I had a little difficulty figuring out all the stuff and I am still working on figuring out the basics but I am getting it. I will never use most of the stuff this camera can do. I got the WI FI set up with out too much trouble. The zoom is absolutely amazing. Bought this for Africa next year and so I have a few months to master it. The point and shoot setting is great and the WIFI connection to my Droid phone is really cool.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

Please see original review posed on 10/4/2014.This camera has become my friend like no other...and this is a rather bold statement given that over my lifetime I've had nearly 50 cameras and camcorders, including a terrific Minolta Maxxum. Since our trip to northwest Wyoming, I've used the camera during trips to Bethany Beach, DE, and Gettysburg, PA. In Bethany I was particularly interested in catching seagulls in flight. I have some spectacular shots. Everything is about the amazing zoom, coupled with image stabilization and focusing speed. In Gettysburg there were just so many shots to take. While in an observation tower, I showed another visitor with a large DSLR the shots that I have taken from the same location. Immediately they wanted to know the make and model of this camera. I'm more excited about photography now than I've been in a long time. I did produce a BluRay disk of our trip to Wyoming using stills and video captured by this camera and it's a family hit. Simply put, this camera is producing "wow" images and video. As an indication of how excited I am about the images produced, I edited my 3 trips into a "Wallpaper Images" folder which contains 53 photos. I have installed this folder on all of my computers and run them as a slide show on my desktop. It's a special feeling to see great images on the desktop that one has taken vs the stock images (which are excellent) that Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc. supply with their computers. The panorama feature is fun. Please see the photo of a art gallery in Bethany Beach.

This camera takes great pic's. I love that it has a viewfinder, they are difficult to find on any of the new camera's. The 30x's zoom is awesome and it's compact size makes it easy to take on trips. I don't love plugging the camera into the wall to charge the battery and I was a bit disappointed that the silver color is not as pictured. It's not really a silver, it's more like a dark grey. The biggest hassle for me is just learning how to use it but in the meantime I can keep it on Auto.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Silver):

Felt like the camera has been fairly "intuitive" to learn and operate. It is a point & shoot, so perhaps "intuitive" should be a given - BUT I'm coming from the DSLR family of cameras - and point & shoot is new to me.

The reason behind this purchase, and what makes this the best camera for me, is the inconspicuous size of the camera and the distance the lens can reach. I'll be doing extensive travel and this camera fit the bill. . . made the choice to leave the DSLR behind.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Silver):

I use the DMC ZS40 when it's not convenient to carry my big Sony A77 with a 18-250 lens. This Camera can be used as a point and shoot or used with more advanced features typically found on larger DSLR. It's fast and responsive and the viewfinder, although small, comes in very handy on bright sunny days. The 30X zoom is a great feature but does require a steady hand. This camera is definitely made for those with small hands. Handling it takes some getting used too.The aspect ratio is 4:3 versus 3:2 of a full size sensor camera. The photos are not full screen when played back on the computer or TV.Image quality is excellent for the size camera.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this camera for my wife who was having trouble seeing the LCD on her current compact camera. It was also showing its age. This ZS40 takes wonderful photos. And the eye-level finder makes it truly worth the cost. The LCD is brilliant, and the camera is easy to use. We plan to use it for travel, with its wide telephoto range of 25-600mm (equivalent) it should be excellent.

It focuses quickly and accurately, and exposure is also accurate.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

I bought this camera for the long telephoto zoom but found that it was too good to be true.
This camera developed optical issues after a few months so I stopped using it.
When zooming to long focal lengths, condensation would develop on some of the elements.
The camera became stuck in macro mode causing images to be only in focus in the center. Removing the battery and setting the camera to default settings did not help.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

I purchased new Lumix cameras in 2007 and 2009, but now that I started photographing birds, I needed more zoom. I purchased a Canon bridge camera in 2011, but found it so large and bulky that I dreaded carrying it around, and I left it at home every time we traveled. Finally I heard about this new Lumix with terrific zoom and a viewfinder for sunny days. I did alot of research and discovered it is the ONLY camera in this price range with those two features. I have had it now for two weeks. It fits in the zipper compartment of my purse and takes magnificent photos. I am THRILLED!

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

My husband and I compared the Canon Powershot sx700, the Nikon CoolPix S9700 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC sz40. Of the three, the Lumix takes the best landscapes, with more natural color than either the Canon or the Nikon. (The Nikon is consistently sharper, but the colors on landscapes look a little desaturated and it tends to blow out clouds in HDR shots.) The Lumix is a great camera for macros, as it can focus up to one centimeter from the subject. The controls are easy to use and the Intelligent Auto detects backlit situations and compensates for them. It also has a HDR feature that works well. The 30X zoom is nice, and we appreciate the viewfinder (the Lumix is the only camera of the three that has one) which is surprisingly bright, and is especially helpful on sunny days and whenever we need extra stabilization for a shot. Because of these factors, the Lumix quickly became our favorite of the three cameras.Cons: the lens is to the left so that there's not much finger room to grip on that side, and when the camera is on tripod, you can't change the battery.

Comments about LUMIX DMC-ZS40 Digital Camera (Black):

I purchased this camera in anticipation of a trip to northwest Wyoming to visit family in Jackson Hole, and to visit nearby locations including the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Cody, and the Rimrock Dude Ranch. I was hoping to find a compact camera with a great optical zoom and excellent video features (1080p, 60fps, stereo) so that I could leave my HD camcorder and DSLR at home. I had searched for such a camera a couple of years ago, but did not find one at that time that would be suitable to capture stills and video of an expensive trip. This time around, I was expecting to purchase a Canon. However, when I did my homework, I found this Panasonic ZS40 which has better features than the competing Canon, the electronic view finder being one of them. In anticipation of taking a fair bit of HD video, I decided to purchase 2 spare batteries. That was a good decision as I was swapping the batteries as necessary throughout the days. One significant surprise was that I could get 60x zoom without significant degradation of the images having turned on the iZoom feature, even without using a tripod. The videos that were captured in difficult situations (e.g. on horseback using one hand to hold and operate the camera) are somewhat jerky for sure, but they are watchable. For those who want a convenient compact camera to use in all sorts of situations without a tripod, then this camera is a good choice. My ultimate goal was to capture the essence of our trip to northwest Wyoming, especially the grandeur of the scenery, and that goal was accomplished. In short, I'm very glad that I purchased this camera. I could not have captured the stunning images of the Grand Tetons from a distance otherwise, especially without using a tripod. The Intelligent Auto mode made the camera simple to operate with great images and videos.

Every year Panasonic has listened to the customers and added new features to make it better and with the addition of Raw, WiFi, NFC They have a winner in this Camera. Takes excellent photos both indoor and outdoors. For the price this camera has alot of bells and whistles. I would highly recommend this camera. You want go wrong try it.

I just went through the worst customer service in my life (i'm 42). Pray your cameras don't need repair or cleaning. Its been a couple months of back and forth with phone calls (me calling because they don't). 4 months out of warranty and light sensor dies. The cost to fix is ALMOST the cost of new. They can keep it. I will never buy panasonic anything ever again:(

I was looking for three things in a camera: zoom, lightweight and view finder. This camera was the only one I could find that fit all 3 criteria. I was able to take a fun photo of mountain goats while backpacking. With the naked eye I could barely even tell what they were. Without a tripod it was hard to hold steady - the camera compensated well! The battery lasts longer than I expected.
