The Front and Rear Dashboard Camera / DVR Kit with WiFi from BlackVue features a 2.4MP front-facing dash cam, and a separate smaller 1.0MP camera that installs at the rear of the vehicle. The rear camera transmits video to the front unit via an included cable, which also supplies power. Each camera has selectable resolutions and frame rates to tailor its performance to specific needs. The main camera records up to 1920 x 1080 resolution at 30fps, while the rear cam can record up to 1280 x 720 also at 30 fps.

There are three recording modes to maximize your memory and capture exactly what you want. A built-in microphone records audio in the vehicle as well. The microphone can be disabled to optimize memory and protect the privacy of passengers.

The unit has a built-in GPS receiver that logs the vehicle position and speed, but does not give turn-by-turn directions. Installing the free downloadable software to your Windows or Mac computer, you can precisely map the route, view speed and g-force readouts, in real-time with the video, on the same screen. A free app, combined with the camera's built-in WiFi, enables network-free wireless communication with your Android or iOS mobile device. The app allows you to stream live-view, play back recorded video, save files from the microSD card to the smart device, or take a snapshot. If your device accepts microSD cards, you can take the card out of the camera and install it on your phone to view the files directly through the app. The app also allows you to share files to social media sites quickly.

Comments about Black Vue Front and Rear Dashboard Camera / DVR Kit with WiFi:

This is a nice unit in concept, but the execution leaves a bit to be desired.

The first goal of a camera should be video quality. As long as you're standing still, the picture is outstanding. Sharp, high detail, very nice image overall from the front camera, and very decent from the back. As soon as you begin moving, however, the picture degrades markedly. The video data rate is very low for this resolution (6 MB/s) and compression artifacts prevent you from reading another car's license plate if it's more than a car length away. The autoexposure is iffy, and has a tendency to overexpose most shots. Using it inside a car with significant windshield rake give all sorts of reflections from the dashboard, but there is no easy way to mount a polarized filter on the lens. Finally, there's a shiny ring on the mount, which defeats the purpose of trying to conceal the camera.

The real dealbreaker is the poorly shielded cable to the rear camera. In my car, the radio antenna is mounted along the top of the rear window, near where the rear camera needs to be mounted. Unshielded RF noise from the camera/cable degrades the entire AM radio band, creating high pitched whistling on most stations, and large amounts of static on all stations. The whistling and static turn on and off with the power state of the camera.

Great in concept, fails in execution. The bit rate needs to be increased (although this would reduce the usefulness of the WiFi function), and the cable/camera pair in the back needs to be shielded far better than the current (Feb. 2014) configuration.
