The 566 to 608 and 614 to 638 MHz version of the Sony UWP-D11 Integrated Digital Wireless Bodypack Lavalier Microphone System features all-metal construction, easy to read LCD displays, a wide switching RF bandwidth, USB power and charging, automatic channel scanning, infrared synchronization between transmitter and receiver, Mic/Line switchable input on the bodypack transmitter, a true diversity receiver, PLL-synthesized tuning, a headphone output on the receiver, output gain controls on the receiver for optimizing the input level into a camera, and digital companding circuitry. The package is suitable for a wide range of wireless applications such as ENG, documentary work, talk shows, conferences, and more.

The system is referred to as integrated digital because the transmitter and receiver utilize DSP for digital companding and expanding of the transmission signal. Performing the companding and expanding processes in the digital domain improves the accuracy and transient response of the received audio.

The camera-mountable receiver features true-diversity technology which stabilizes reception and minimizes RF interference by using dual antenna input/reception circuits and selecting the strongest incoming signal. The angle of the antennas is also adjustable to improve reception when the receiver is mounted on top of a camera or camcorder. The system utilizes UHF Phase Locked Loop (PLL) synthesis to lock the phase of the transmission frequency between transmitter and receiver. The receiver can automatically search for an available transmission frequency and link the desired frequency to the transmitter via infrared connection.

A stereo mini-jack output with monitor volume control is included and both stereo mini and stereo XLR cables are provided. The unit also includes a headphone monitor output for use with cameras and camcorders that don't have a monitor output. An LCD display provides channel and frequency information, battery life, RF-input level, audio-output status and accumulated operating time.

For power, the receiver operates on two AA batteries for up to 6 hours, or on 5 VDC of USB power over a USB micro B cable. The USB connection can also be used to recharge Ni-MH rechargeable batteries within the battery cartridge. The receiver's compact design and included shoe-mount adapter allows easy mounting to most camcorders and interchangeable lens system cameras.

The improved bodypack transmitter features a mic- and line-level switch for standard wired microphone or line-level sources. Selectable transmission output power provides a choice between 5mW output, which is suitable for simultaneous multi-channel operation, or 30mW output for long distance transmission.

The transmitter can operate for up to 8 hours on two AA-size alkaline batteries, be powered or recharged via USB micro B connection, and features a comprehensive LCD display.

The system comes with an omnidirectional lavalier microphone, a windscreen for the microphone, a microphone holder clip, two belt clips, a shoe-mount adapter, a 3-pin mini to mini stereo cable, and a 3-pin mini to XLR cable. Optional accessories such as a battery case and soft case for the receiver are sold separately.

I purchased this system as a replacement for my Sennheiser Evolution G2s. I liked the G2s and considered going to the G3s but a few things bugged me about them. The build quality was good but not great. Plastic battery swing door that occasionally came loose (rarely) and the antennae are flimsy. The lavaliers included are also of mediocre build. However, they do provide excellent sound quality, and I use a Tram lav on more important shoots (I have a wedding and event company, but also do a variety of corporate and reality tv work, documentary, etc.) I have used the Lectrosonics extensively as well so I'm experienced with various gear and field audio. When looking for a replacement, I had a friend recommend the previous Sony UWP system and after using them I was impressed with the build quality. They compared well to the Lectros. So after hearing and reading about this new lineup, I decided to try them.I have been impressed with them from the first use. They are very durable and all the wires are thicker and seem more durable than the G2s. Even the stock lav is well made. Set up is very easy and the Auto setup feature is very useful. Display is easy to read and menu simple to navigate (I only needed a little reference to get the hang of it). Field use was very easy and although my Lumix GH3 has audio monitoring, the built in headphone jack is useful and convenient. Sound quality is very good, especially with my newly modified Tram lav. There are many features that I have not yet tried (USB charging) but overall this is an excellent system. I will soon be getting another to replace my other Sennheiser. If you do audio every day, you may want to go with a higher end system like the Lectrosonics, but for less demanding work (2-3 days a week) or as a secondary or backup system, you can't go wrong.

        XLR cable is too short

When I mounted the Sony UWP-D11 wireless receiver to my Sony FS 100, the cable was not quite long enough to reach the XLR input on the back of the camcorder.

When I mounted the Sony UWP-D11 wireless receiver to my Sony FS 100, the cable was not quite long enough to reach the XLR input on the back of the camcorder.

The XLR cord on my Sennheiser G3 wireless receiver is several inches longer and fits perfectly. I don't know why Sony couldn't make a cord long enough to plug into their cameras comfortably.

The sound was comparable to my Sennheiser but the Sennheiser ME2 lav mic sounded slightly better to me.

The Sony would be a good option if you need a headphone jack on the receiver. Since my cameras all have headphone jacks, I'm returning it and getting another Sennheiser.

I've been using this lav mic for interviews and it has been working great. I tested the distance I could walk with clear signal and lets just say I'll never need to record someone as far away as I went and still had a great signal. It's easy to use and the lav mic provided sounds pretty good. The body pack is nice and slim and unobtrusive to the wearer. Haven't really discovered anything I don't like about it yet!

Very happy with the sound quality and the easy functionality of the Sony wireless Lavalier system. It is my first Lavalier system and the voice on the recording was sharp and clear - I am using it with a DSLR (Canon Mark 3)

Tested side by side with Sennheiser G3 and performance wise the Sony is equal or better. The only caveat is that if you use any other brand lav mic with 1/8" mini plug (same as Sony's supplied mic) you have to send it out to be re-wired to fit the Sony. If you do that the lav becomes Sony "locked" and doesn't work with the Sennheiser G3.I hope Sony will correct this issue for future releases.

I have one of the first sets released and after being on back order a while, the wait was well worth it.

Built solid and it seems they had input from people who actully have to rely on this gear in the field for deign.

                                    1) I have yet to get static or lose a signal after 80+ interviews.

                                    2) Battery Doors with side access, I do not have to remove anything but a small door to access them. Love this!

                                    3) Earphone jack built into receiver, way past due.

The units are extremely reliable. I have gone 7 hours on NiCads without any issue, the mic works very well and I would personally consider them a step up from the sennheiser units.

Comments about Sony UWP-D11 Integrated Digital Wireless Bodypack Lavalier Microphone System (UHF Channels 30/36 and 38/41: 566 to 608 and 614 to 638 MHz):

Pretty cool unit for the price. They will certainly give buyers something to think about if considering much more expesive brands. Compared to the older UWP series these units sound far better and when I tested, had better range too. If you cant afford the high dollar brands, you will be very satisfied with these. You will want to use better lavs but with the money you'll save you can get top notch mics.
