The black Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a compact, ergonomically-designed camera featuring a 16.1 megapixel Live MOS sensor and TruePic VII image processor to produce high-resolution still imagery and full HD 1080p video with notable low-light quality and high-speed performance. The combination of these two technologies enables a high sensitivity range from ISO 100-25600 and continuous shooting up to 8 fps. The sensor also lends itself to an enhanced FAST autofocus system that utilizes a contrast-detection focusing method to efficiently acquire focus with selectable focus areas for even greater precision. Also benefitting image sharpness is in-body 3-axis image stabilization that compensates for angular shifts and rolling camera shake.

Both a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and tilting touchscreen monitor are available for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation. The EVF features a 1,440k-dot resolution and 1.15x magnification for comfortable eye-level viewing with the ability to preview image effects in real-time. Alternatively, the 3.0" 1,037k-dot tilting touchscreen LCD monitor can tilt upward 80° or downward 50° to suit working from high and low angles and its touchscreen design provides an intuitive means for controlling settings and navigating through the menu system. For refined off-board control and image sharing, built-in wireless connectivity is available and, when paired with the Olympus Image Share app for iOS and Android mobile devices, remote sharing and control over the camera is possible.

Included with the camera body is the M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R standard zoom lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-84mm. It features quiet autofocus and zooming operation to benefit recording movies and also incorporates three aspherical elements into its design to reduce aberrations and produce notable image sharpness and quality.

16.1MP Live MOS Sensor and TruePic VII Image Processor
The 16.1 megapixel Live MOS sensor and TruePic VII image processor, with Fine Detail Processing II, work in concert to enable high-resolution still imagery, full HD video recording, and notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 25600. The combination of these two technologies also helps to promote high-speed performance throughout the camera system, including a top shutter speed of 1/4000 sec. with a mechanical shutter, a continuous shooting rate up to 8 fps with single-shot AF, and continuous 3.5 fps shooting with continuous autofocus.

Additionally, full HD 1080p movie recording is supported at 30 fps with stereo sound in either the MOV or AVI format. Simultaneous shooting, up to 5 fps, is also possible in P/A/S/M modes at 5.8MP resolution, without interrupting the movie recording.
In-Camera 3-Axis Image Stabilization
In-body VCM (Voice Coil Motor) image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake with any lens in use and compensates for camera movements that become especially noticeable when working with telephoto shots, macro imagery, and long exposures. Furthermore, this unique image stabilization system works across three axes, versus the conventional two axes, and compensates for vertical and horizontal shifts (yaw and pitch) as well as camera shake along the optical axis (roll). This range of detected movements serves to benefit traditional still image shooting as well as movie recording and working with moving subjects more effectively.
Electronic Viewfinder and 3.0" Tilting Touchscreen
For eye-level viewing, a bright 1,440k-dot electronic viewfinder is integrated into the design and features an automatic eye-detect function, 0.007 sec. display lag time, and 1.15x magnification. This finder enables realistic, high resolution viewing in a comfortable position that is especially beneficial when working in bright conditions. The adaptive brightness settings also enable easier viewing in different lighting conditions, with the brightness being set according to surrounding conditions to better simulate the use of an optical viewfinder.

In addition to the viewfinder, a large 3.0" 1,037k-dot tilting touchscreen LCD monitor is also available for live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation. The monitor's design can tilt 80° upward and 50° downward, making it well-suited to use from both high and low angles. The intuitive touchscreen control offers a range of additional functionality, too, including the ability to touch to release the shutter, select the focusing point, magnify the image, apply filter effects, and navigate through images and settings.
FAST Autofocus System
Benefitting the quickened shooting performance of the E-M10, a contrast-detection focusing method employs 81 AF areas to quickly and accurately acquire focus. Aptly named, FAST (Frequency Acceleration Sensor Technology) is able to home in on subjects using single-shot or continuous focusing methods, as well as AF tracking to benefit working with moving subjects. In addition to standard Small Target and Group Target focusing areas, Super Spot AF can also be used to acquire focus in a smaller, more refined area for critical accuracy.

When working with manual focus, focus peaking and manual focus assist functions are available to simplify attaining precise sharpness, which is especially useful when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
Built-In Wireless Connectivity
By using the Olympus Image Share app, wireless control of the E-M10 is possible through using linked iOS and Android mobile devices. The mobile device can be used to preview compositions, choose a specific AF point, and release the shutter via the intuitive app interface. Linking of mobile devices to the camera is possible through an intuitive QR Code Connect system, which displays a unique QR code on the camera's monitor which can then be recognized by a mobile device for instant linking.
M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R Lens
Included with the E-M10 is the versatile M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R zoom lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28-84mm. Three aspherical elements have been incorporated into the lens' design to help reduce chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range and also contribute to high image sharpness and clarity. The lens is designated as MSC (Movie & Still Compatible), making it ideal for video recording due to its quick and near-silent focusing performance.
Other Camera Features
  • Constructed from metal, the camera body features retro-inspired design with easily-accessible 2 x 2 dial controls for streamlined adjustment over camera settings.
  • A built-in pop-up flash is available for additional illumination and supports wireless flash control within four channels and four groups.
  • The Color Creator feature allows for adjusting hue and chroma directly in the EVF with results visible in real-time. This, coupled with an intuitive GUI, permits more finite and exacting control over the color balance of an image.
  • Fine Detail II technology automatically corrects for chromatic aberration based on the specific lens in use. Natural-appearing high-resolution quality is attained by applying intelligent sharpening techniques based on the lens' focal length and aperture value being used.
  • HDR Preview emulates the finalized look of an HDR image in the viewfinder prior to the camera processing the images together, allowing greater control and selectivity over how extended dynamic range images are taken. HDR photos are possible with up to a 12 EV-wide range of bracketed shots.
  • 12 Art Filters are available for creatively enhancing imagery and movies: Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Color, Light Tone, Grainy Film, Pin Hole, Diorama, Cross Process, Gentle Sepia, Dramatic Tone, Key Line, and WaterColor. 7 Art Effects are also available: Soft Focus Effect, Pin-Hole Effect, White Edge Effect, Frame Effect, Star Light Effect, Diorama Effect, Pict. Tone (Sepia, Blue, Purple, Green).
  • Photo Story allows recording of a scene from multiple viewpoints, which are then composited into a single image using a range of pre-defined formats and themes.
  • Interval shooting permits sequential recording of 1-999 shots, with 1 second to 24 hour intervals, to easily shoot a series of consecutive photos. Furthermore, the series of images can be converted to a time-lapse movie for more simplified playback.
  • Live Bulb and Live Time modes allows you to view the progression of exposure during bulb and time exposure in real-time and a live view histogram shows how the exposure is built-up across all points of the image.
  • Live Composite Mode allows you to intuitively capture star-scapes and other long exposures in real time.
  • Multiple Exposure shooting allows for the stacking of sequential exposures within the same frame for creative results.
  • Face Detect, Face Priority, and Eye Detection allow you to select different priorities for basing focus and exposure on. Up to eight separate faces can be detected and Eye Detection allows you to select either the right or left eye to prioritize.
  • A built-in level gauge aids in creating perfectly level compositions based on the horizon and architectural elements within the scene.
  • Picture Modes: i-Enhance, Vivid, Natural, Muted, Portrait, Monotone, Custom, e Portrait, Color Creator, and Art Filters.
  • Language support: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Russian, Czech, Dutch, Danish, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Croat, Slovenian, Hungarian, Greek, Slovakian, Turkish, Latvian, Estonian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Rumanian, Indonesian, Malay, and Thai.

I've been using Olympus cameras for close to 20 years now. For the past 2 years I've been getting more and more discouraged with the low light capabilities my current camera and have been watching the development of the mirrorless systems. Once I read about the OM-D E-M5 I began to seriously consider that system. By February of this year I had saved up some money and then heard that the E-M10 was coming out and at a great price point.

So the price is what hooked me. Well that and the wi-fi communication, the small footprint, the extensive list of usable lenses (several of which I already own), the EVF AND touchscreen LCD. I could go on and on.

For a hobbyist shooter like myself this camera is nearly perfect. If you are familiar with other Olympus DSLRs the controls will be very comfortable to you. The pictures are exactly what you expect. The dual knobs allow me to make adjustments without taking my eye off the view finder.

For someone just starting out, this camera will provide a great introduction to photography at a very light weight. For a more serious shooter this camera provides as much customization as you need and feel comfortable with. For someone already invested in the Olympus ecosystem the E-M10 is a perfect extension of that investment.

    Happy so far

    By Kaphinga

Comments about OM-D E-M10 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm Lens (Silver):

I must confess that for the first thirty minutes I thought had made a serious mistake getting this camera. The settings and menus were completely inscrutable in the beginning, and the manual was not much help. Soon, however, I began to figure it out. Once I got the myriad of options set to my liking, I found that I really love the camera. The ergonomics are good for my small hands, and I am extremely happy with the image quality. I have almost the same capability as with my dSLR but without the weight.

Very happy with M-10 Did research for a long time, then I went to B&H (best and biggest photo shop in the world!, I could spend days in that place, just amazing shop, great people!!!!) I bought with grip, it is a must, I have small hands but this makes it much more comfortable to hold. Bought it with kit lens, 75-300 and Sigma 30mm. It won't replace my Nikon D-800 but whenever I travel this is the way to go.

Don't think twice about it. JUS BUY IT. WONT REGRET!!!!!!!

Comments about OM-D E-M10 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm Lens (Silver):

This camera has been great since day one. I chose to purchase a mirror less camera to travel with. I usually use a Nikon D-300 so I did not want to loose the ability to use my camera on fully manual and still have a view finder.

The camera takes great photographs that can be expanded up to 11x14 without any noticeable difference from the D-300.

The size along makes this camera worth while. It does have a little bit of a learning curve, but if you are familiar with DSLR cameras this shouldn't be too big a challenge.

Comments about OM-D E-M10 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm Lens (Black):

I consider myself a hobbyist. I have taken a few courses and have had the Canon G9, t2i and 70D. The 70D is a great camera, but it is too big to carry all the time. The OM-D E-M10 feels like it is a third of the size but has all the functionality.
I can take it on the street and not feel conspicuous. I find it very easy to shoot in manual with both shutter and aperture controls on the top. Aperture priority is easy too. The back top dial controls Aperture, the front Exposure Compensation.
You can research all the features, but if you are considering moving up from a point and shoot, I would recommend this camera over a DSLR. You can get a complete kit for much less money.

After years and years (and years) of thinking about getting into photography, I finally took the plunge last week. Did a lot of research, walked in and out of B&H empty handed about 15 times, talked everyones' ear off and I finally landed on this beauty and I couldn't be happier.

Since this is my first camera of this quality, keep in mind that I don't have much to compare it to since I'm not used to any sort of setup or eco-system. Before purchasing this camera, I was told the menu system is confusing but to be honest, I wouldn't have known the difference anyway. So that's where I am. But since everyone loves bullet points (I do):

                      Loves:

                      • Touch screen is amazing. I can switch the focus in a picture with a simple touch.

                      • Feels amazing in the hand. I held a few models of this type as well and they all felt pretty flimsy by comparison.

                      • Really easy to use. I'm not expert obviously but this camera seems scalable to the user. Meaning someone who knows what they're doing can get a lot out of it while an amateur can jump in with out feeling intimidated.

                      Hates:

                      • None so far. The EVF could be better.

First, I like the retro feel of this camera. All metal, solid and well made. Electronic viewfinder very clear and sure comes in handy when very bright out. Control dials are easy to get to and use. Picture quality is just as good as any DSLR. Compact and easy to carry around.

A small but solid camera. IQ is excellent resulting in very good prints on up to 12 x 18 paper. The best surprise was the EVF which I was concerned about. It is very usable in high contrast situations. Definitely a keeper. In summary I have owned a lot of dlsr's (not to mention film cameras) including the Canon 5D and this little camera can hold its own against the best of them.

It's compact size and great selection of lenses make this little guy a mighty mite. The selection of micro 4/3 lenses along with some 4/3 lenses is impressive. I have been enjoying springtime macro shots with the 60mm Olympus Marco and some bird and critter pics with a 4/3 Olympus 70-300mm lens with an adapter. The reach on the latter is incredible giving you a 600mm lens in a reasonable size and with the built in stabilization of the Olympus body it can be handheld with reasonable success. Do you realize how big a full frame 600mm lens is ? The Olympus Art Filters and really fun to use too. Extremely versatile camera with excellent image quality.

Comments about OM-D E-M10 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm Lens (Silver):

This camera is just excellent! The quality of the pictures is superb, and it's very quick. I chose this camera over entry lever DSLRs because of it's size, and it has an included evf. Even the pictures in low light look pretty nice with high ISO, and just using the kit lens.

Comments about OM-D E-M10 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 14-42mm Lens (Silver):

I ordered the M10 (body only) as a replacement for my Pen PL-1 in January on the day it was announced. Then I noticed the product with kit lens was in stock so I changed my order and took delivery a week or so ago. It was worth the wait, but not without some doubts at first. The kit lens slips on and off perfectly but my existing 14-150 zoom and 17mm 1.8 did not fit at all! After the third tech at B&H, I discovered it just takes a lot of force to rotate these lenses onto the body. The tech advised he had seen this before with Nikon but not Olympus but it was OK to force the lens on without fear of breaking something. The only aparent difference between the new kit lens and older ones is plastic versus metal mount rings on the older models. Does not say much for quality control or manufacturing tolerances, but all lenes work well once on. I don't have enough courage to dab a lubricant on the mount flanges.

That issue aside the camera is beautifully made and feels and looks like a precision instrument. The firmware is innovative with the optional live view and super control panel and both are needed for differeent shooting circumstances. I am a hobbiest and like taking photos of wildlife which makes one learn photography. Try shooting beautiful birds at a feeder thru glass and in the house shadow so they are backlit and moving constantly. It makes you understand the need for expensive bright lenes. So far I am getting some good shots at ISO 20,000 and high speed sequenctial shutter fire. Not NAT GEO but closer.

One complaint is the camera design could be more compact like Sony is doing. To me the best camera is the one you have with you and that demands a shirt pocket size or at least a thin belt pouch. I carry a Leica Model with C 7-zoom for that purpose. I may never find the one camera that does everything but this one is the closest yet.

More complaints are that panoramic shooting mode is outdated and not very useful. On the other hand the HDR mode is better than any of my other cameras but you must go into the menu to find it, at least until I learn how to customise the FN buttons.

I am now committed to the 4/3 size which halves the weight and bulk of my Sony A58 system with equal or even better picture quality.

The pros greatly outnumbers the above complaints and I predict this may become Olympus's best selling model of all time.
