The black Olympus Stylus Tough TG-850 Digital Camera is a water, crush, shock, freeze, and dustproof point-and-shoot camera capable of operating in areas where a normal camera would fail. It features a 16MP BSI CMOS sensor, a 5x optical zoom lens, and the TruePic VII image processor in order to create detailed, high resolution images. Additionally, this camera is capable of capturing video with 1920 x 1080 recording at up to 60 frames per second.

The Olympus TG-850 is built to withstand the elements and impacts. It can shoot underwater to a depth of 33' as well as being able to survive drops as high as 7' and crushproof to 220 pounds. It is even able to shoot and maintain all function in temperatures as low as 14°F, well below freezing. It also has a protective sealing that makes it dustproof, keeping fine grains like sand and other obstructions from ruining your camera.

The lens on the TG-850 is a 5x optical zoom that provides the focal length equivalency of 21-105mm in the 35mm format. At 21mm, you have a wide-angle lens that can shoot expansive vistas and inclusive group shots and at 105mm it is a telephoto length that can magnify distant subjects or shoot creative close-ups. A Super Resolution Zoom function is also available extend that reach if necessary. Image Stabilization offers clearer images by reducing the blurring effects of camera shake when shooting at telephoto lengths and in low light situations. And there are also very extensive interval shooting capabilities that can be easily accessed.

A 3.0" 180° tilt LCD display allows you to easily adjust the view for shooting self-portraits and other difficult to frame images. Also, the screen makes it very simple to change settings and review your images. Intelligent Auto mode helps with these settings by automatically selecting what options and modes are ideal for the current scene.

16MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS Sensor
The 16MP sensor in the TG-850 provides richly colored, detailed images with fine low-light performance and fast autofocus capability.
TruePic VII Image Processor
The image processing engine on the TG-850 offers fast transfer and performance speeds and allows the camera to shoot both high resolution photos and Full HD video with accurate colors and minimal noise.
Waterproof and Damage Resistant
The TG-850 is designed to be used in inclement weather and is able to shoot underwater and withstand the bumps and drops that other cameras cannot. It is waterproof to 33', shockproof to 7', crushproof to 220 lb, freezeproof to 14°F, and dustproof.
5x Optical Zoom Lens
With a focal range that runs from 21-105mm in the 35mm format along with a maximum aperture of f/3.5-5.7, the lens on the TG-850 provides great image quality at shooting lengths from wide-angle to telephoto. The wide-angle allows for expansive vistas and the telephoto lengths can bring distant subjects closer. Because this camera is meant to be used in all weather conditions, the lens is provided with a water-repellent coating to keep rain drops and condensation from clouding-up the image.
1080p Full HD Video at 60 Frames Per Second
Record full high definition video at up to 60 frames per second due to the combination of processing power and image sensor technology.
3.0" Tilting LCD Display
The 460k-dot 3.0" tilting LCD display allows you to easily see what you are doing and makes framing self-portraits and other difficult to shoot scenes much simpler.
Dual Image Stabilization
Dual Image Stabilization combines Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds to capture crisp, clear images even in low-light situations.
ISO Range 125-6400
An ISO range up to 6400 offers accurate color reproduction and low-noise imaging even in low light situations.
Interval Modes
The TG-850's interval shooting feature allows you capture each step of an action sequence, or you can set the camera for longer intervals and stitch the images together into a time-lapse movie.
Intelligent Auto and Scene Modes
In iAuto mode, the camera automatically detects the subject, lighting and situation to identify the scene you're shooting and adjusts the settings for ideal results. Scene Modes include Portrait, Beauty, Landscape, Night, Night + Portrait, Sport, Indoor, Self Portrait, Sunset, Fireworks, Cuisine, Beach & Snow, Documents, Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide 1, Underwater Wide 2, Underwater Macro, and others.
Hand-Held Starlight Mode
At night and in low-light situations where image blur is more likely to occur, Hand-Held Starlight mode captures multiple images and stitches them together into a single, crisp photo.
Panorama Mode
Capture panoramic vistas all in one frame with the touch of one button, by simply panning the camera across the scene.
AF Illuminator
An LED Illuminator on the front of the camera acts to enhance focus and exposure for macro shooting. It also works in conjunction with the flash to help illuminate your subject in low-light conditions.

I rock climb and ski, and have used an earlier Olympus tough cam for years. My wife decided to appropriate it so I bought this TG-850 as a replacement. Big upgrade: out of the box image quality is great for underwater snorkeling (camera arrived the day before a trip to Kauai) without any color cast. The tilt up screen allows for much easier framing when underwater. The screen also allows for looking down and bracing the camera against yourself for steadier shots, as well as for standing the camera upright on sloping surfaces (rocks in a stream, for example) . I used the video capture last night to capture a fire dance at a luau and even hand held at night the video was remarkably steady.
The 21 mm equiv. wide angle is useful to me and I anticipate it will allow me some better framing/ composition options for rock climbing shots next week in the New River Gorge in WV.

I'm really disappointed in this camera.I took it scuba diving in the West Indies, all buttons beside the on/off and shutter have stopped working after the first dip in the water. At least I got a few pictures out of it.The image quality is depressing for a 16mp camera. I'm used to my DSLR granted, but the camera on my iPhone 4S (three years old) appears equal to or better than all of the photo's I've taken with this camera.Close up images are okay. In really good light.Landscapes look horrible. Soft. The way the pixels are compressed, they feel painted with a bad photoshop filter. Not much texture. Defeats the purpose of having the wider angle...Which mine is stuck in because the buttons are fried.Underwater pictures looked ok.For over $ I feel ripped off, I thought I would at lease get a decent pocket camera out of the deal.

Comments about Stylus Tough TG-850 Digital Camera (Silver):

I am extremely happy with this camera. This was one of 3 cameras I took with me on a 9 day float trip on a remote river in Alaska. The first video of the trip was shot exclusively with this camera. The ongoing series of videos that follow feature this camera throughout. I was very impressed with the quality of sound. Check out my YouTube channel to see how it performs ( ....................... ). I use STK LI-50B generic batteries and they work great. I kept the settings at 1080 60p for the entire trip. Almost all of the photos and slo-mo action was captured with this camera. My dad took a Nikon Coolpix and it doesn't compare. The Olympus blows the Nikon out of the water! Every camera should have a tilted screen like this. It comes in handy! For the type of trip I did this camera can't be beat. The camera had the hell beat out of it and it still performed wonderfully. One of my favorite photos of the trip was taken with this camera. At the end of my Part 5 video the last clip of the sunset was taken with this. Actually all of the photos in that video were taken with this camera.

Comments about Stylus Tough TG-850 Digital Camera (White):

I am using Sony RX-100 as my main camera. OK. I was very disappointed when I zoom first TG-850's picture in. Pixels were blurred like water painted. I researched other wasterproof point and shot camera images. All waterproof camera is using 1/2.3 sensor and all image was not good. If you think about sensor size, this image quality is acceptable.I took this camera to beach. The color of picture at beach was amazing. And I could take picture on the water surface. It is impossible with other expensive cameras. Also, the flipping LCD is amazing. I did not need to worry about strange selfie angle. Ultra-wide lens is also nice. It can take more information in one picture. I can take enough backgound in selfie. Now, I can know where I went. My friends in facebook also can know where I was :)I bought white. It was not popular but I am satisfying with my decision. There is gross white region and it makes this camera looks better. This waterproof camera has poor image quality, but 2 times more price waterproof cameras have same sensor size and similar lens except for TG-3. So, realistically, this camera is good option.Thank you for reading even with broken English.

I am a professional reviewer so I received a pre-release sample and took it to Hawaii. After several days of constant use, ------The 20mm wide-angle is amazing, best in class.- The tilting LCD, SO helpful, again- best in this class.- Photo quality is good enough for online and small prints— typical UW tough camera JPG. Not as good as a fully-featured dry-land-only point and shoot.- The 120fps and sequential modes are awesome, and the slo-mo videos are good enough for my online YouTubes: ---------- Battery life is so-so when doing video and flash, so I bring a spare ALWAYS.Mine did NOT fail as others' did. Still kicking after 6 months on the waters.Motor noise during video zooming? Sure. Most internal flat-lens zoom cameras do it. read my full review for details.

Comments about Stylus Tough TG-850 Digital Camera (Silver):

This is the 4th Olympus waterproof camera I have bought. My first one just finally died recently after we left the door slightly open and went in the pool (had it for about 7 years). This is a great camera for the beach, skiing, pool or wherever you don't want to bring a more expensive or bulky camera. It has video (which I love) and have taken quite a few underwater videos in the pool. In this most recent version, Olympus improved on the locking mechanism of the door and removed the opening and closing mechanism of the lens. Both are issues in previous versions. I did not give it 5 stars because a previous version had better zoom. I didn't realize the significance of tilting LCD screen (why it would go up), now I realize it is for selfies.

Comments about Stylus Tough TG-850 Digital Camera (White):

The "Tough" Olympus Camera's have come of age and the TG-850 is clearly a solid ALL weather camera with several crowd pleasing features such as the Flip LCD Display, extra-wide angle lens, and full Video, really make it easy to take great images playing on a sandy beech or scaling a mountain in the rain. I gave this camera to newly-weds to take on their honeymoon travels to the West Indies and the Colorado Mountains, and the reports back were very positive as were some great photos without the fear of inclement weather or other elements such as sand, clay, dirt, etc, which could ruin a smart phone.

Comments about Stylus Tough TG-850 Digital Camera (Black):

I bought 5 of these cameras to conduct shallow underwater surveys with my colleagues. All the dives I've taken them on have been at depths shallower than 22' - well below the advertised threshold of 33'. We work with underwater equipment and o-rings frequently, so we're very familiar with how to assemble and maintain stuff like this. All 5 of these cameras have failed after one or two dives. I sent the first one back to Olympus, and that replacement also failed (death toll = 6). One flooded in the battery compartment, but the others appeared to have leaked around the lens and flash. Oddly, even though they were totally destroyed, all of them worked perfectly underwater and died as soon as they touched the air. Weird. It's a real shame since the pictures I did get with these were great, but the cameras were an abysmal letdown. I've returned them and gone with a different brand.

Comments about Stylus Tough TG-850 Digital Camera (Black):

I really want to like this camera, but the poor image quality is a real negative for me. Pictures are not sharp, and when blown up to show detail, they have a "painted" look to them that doesn't look good. Similarly, video is just "ok", nothing to write home about, and in typical scenes (lazy river at the local water park, bumper boats at the local fun park), the camera tried to change focus points way too much, rather than using the extreme depth of field that small sensors provide and staying locked in.There are many positives - the camera is small, relatively light, the 21mm wide angle is good for getting the whole scene in the picture, the flip up screen is handy for getting pictures at odd angles - but for me they don't outweigh the image quality issues.I also had a problem with the charger. When I initially plugged it in, the charging light didn't come on, so I assumed that it was fully charged (as stated in the manual). Wrong. Got to the water park and after 1 minute of video the camera told me that the battery was low, and after 30-40 pictures it told me that the battery was just about dead. Came home later and plugged it back in, charging light still didn't come on. Had to wiggle it a few times before it finally started to charge. Would have preferred a charger that let me just charge the removable battery (a la my Nikon DSLR), rather than requiring me to charge the battery in the camera.Overall not happy enough with the camera to keep it, it's going back.

Comments about Stylus Tough TG-850 Digital Camera (Black):

Yes this is a waterproof shockproof camera, so can be taken into abusive environments...and it has impressive features - great macro mode, 21mm wide angle lens and 60fps video.BUT if you are expecting better quality images than usual for this class of cameras, forget it. The JPEG images are VERY soft, overprocessed and not good for anything larger than 4x6 print. There is also annoying intermittent shutter lag (? due to camera having trouble focusing). The hi resolution multiple frame mode is a joke - takes 3-5 pictures and then stops (even with a fast SD card). The 5-axis video stabilization ("hybrid mode") is poor - with a smooth panning motion the resultant video "judders" - subtle but definite. It also seems that you don't get the full 21mm of wide angle in the video mode. In summary, yes you can take it places that would be abusive for other cameras, but be aware there are many tradeoffs, notably poor image quality.

Out of the box this product satisfies as being everything the description claims. Very well built and feels very sturdy in the hand. The flip up screen is a great idea. Haven't had the chance yet to use it underwater but if they are as good as those taken "on land" I will be be very happy. Not a replacement for my DSLR but not expected to be. A good thing to add to any camera bag (or pocket!)

As a very busy home inspector I average around 500photos to insert in my reports each week. This camera fits nicely in my uniform or overall pocket. I take in in attics where the summer time temperature exceeds 130 degrees F, on ladders, roofs and all through a home including the crawl space. Crawl space silt, dust, water and high humidity would destroy most other cameras - hence my need for a water proof camera.
The photos are great including the digital zoom which often save me from climbing up on a steep roof. The flip screen is a concern since it is not a sturdy as the rest of the camera. I fear it can get caught on something and get broken. I'd be happier without it.

                              1. It was used for just 2 months, and now it is not working right. Mode Dial and Arrow Pad work at their own will.
                              2. The brightness is not very good neither. You can barely see the picture on LCD when in outdoor especially in the water.
                              3. Panoramic function of Olympus is low tech. I had an stylus camera 8 years ago and panoramic function on these cameras works exactly the same. Nothing developed within 8 years! I'm ashamed of myself buying Olympus camera. You have to manually overlap end of a frame with beginning of a frame while taking panoramic picture. And it is so annoying when you can't see the picture clearly to overlap when taking outdoor.

I bought this camera mainly for taking pics and vids when snorkeling. During 7 days in the Indian Ocean, I took more than thousand pictures + hundred videos. This is my experience with this camera:
                                  - Very good video quality (under water).
                                  - Very bad sound quality (overall)! The zoom motor noise and other disturbing noises are always recorded on the video, which is very frustrating.
                                  - Pictures quality under water: Good when the subject is not moving too fast. Decent otherwise.
                                  - Flash under water: When took without flash, pictures quality are better than with. 3 under water scene modes are provided. By default, 2 of them (Under Water Wide1 + Under Water Macro) use the flash by default. When disabling the flash, after powering off and powering on the camera, the flash is again enabled. This is a little bit annoying.
                                  - Display under water: Good point. The tilting display is useful. The luminosity has to be configured to the maximum.
                                  - Battery: The charge is OK for 2 hours of continuous use when snorkeling.
Globally: Some features are good, others may be improved.

                                  Nice size, but some drawbacks.

Comments about Stylus Tough TG-850 Digital Camera (Black):

This was easy to set up and its two automatic settings make it easy to use. I was disappointed that no instruction book comes with it. It has to be ordered for $[$]plus shipping and tax. The instructions are on a CD included with the kit and they are online, but even a small camera like this can be complicated. There is nothing like reading a book for best comprehension. One big problem is the flimsy covering for the batteries. It is difficult to close when not pressed firmly down and in the exact correct position. Also, the on/off button is too small. This is definitely a camera only for those with strong and accurate function in both hands and all fingers.I like a viewfinder. I can steady the camera better with it and take better photos. There is no viewfinder.
