Questions? Ask our experts:

The Bower 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Canon EF is a wide-angle lens optimized for digital cinematography. The lens produces an image circle that will cover APS-C sized sensors or smaller. The focus and aperture rings feature industry-standard 0.8 pitch gearing for attaching a follow focus unit. The aperture ring is also de-clicked to allow for smooth iris pulls while shooting. Focus, aperture, and depth of field markings are on the side of the lens to aid focus pullers, who typically operate on the side of the camera.

The 16mm T2.2 lens is constructed out of 13 individual elements in 11 groups, including one aspherical and one hybrid aspherical element. Aspherical elements help minimize unwanted distortion and chromatic aberrations. The lens also has a multi-layer coating to reduce flares and maintain image contrast in bright conditions.

With an angle of view of 79.5°, the lens is well-suited for shooting landscapes, architecture, and for use in tight interior locations. A maximum aperture of T2.2 means that the lens is effective in low-light shooting and can produce a shallow depth of field when the lens is closer to the subject. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 7.87". A bayonet-mount lens hood and lens pouch come included with the lens.

Comments about Bower 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Canon EF Mount:

It is an amazing buy, it feels solid and has an outstanding sharpness. It can focus very close. The only bad thing is that the infinity is not correctly adjusted, and between macro and 1 meter it is a very long twist of the ring compared to 1m to infinity.

I saw this on sale at BH and really thought about it before buying. It was such a great price. I have Rokinon cine lenses and thought if this one would match it would make a great addition to my kit. I was pleasantly surprised that it matched in color/look perfectly.

Comments about Bower 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Canon EF Mount:

A t/2.2 cine lens for under 300 bucks! It hard to complain with that. I use this on my T5i (although I just ordered a new T6i from B&H) and I get very sharp video. Although it never hurts to sharpen a bit in post. The focus ring is smooth but firm enough not to jostle out of focus when moving and although I haven't had a need to pull the t-stop while filming, the de-clicked aperture ring seems perfectly capable. And you can really finesse it to an exact point of exposure. Has a nice weight to it and feels like a really solid build. Since I shoot on a crop frame, I just look at this as my 24mm. Now I'm saving up for the 35mm t1.5.

Comments about Bower 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I gave this lens to my son. He says it is the sharpest lens in his bag, beating out his Canon 50mm f/1.4 prime. He's fallen in love with the WIDE field of view.

Distortion is not noticeable on many of his shots, he says. He shoots training videos. Most of his shots are done with a level camera, which minimizes the effects of barrel distortion, and he doesn't pan the camera a lot.

I've taken stills with it, and loved it so much that I bought the full frame version for myself.

Comments about Bower 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Canon EF Mount:

This is a perfect wide angle lens without the extreme distortion common in lower MM lenses or fisheyes. I love the manual iris on this as well, that out performs many other lens iris functions eliminating flicker, that is highly undesireable for video or film production.

I love this lens, and I will buy more Bower lenses as well. Nick Teti, Mister Photon Media, Denver, Colorado USA

I was looking for a lens to do low light landscapes, aurora and wide field astrophotography, this seemed like it would work well. It is awesome. At f/2 it is super sharp, with no noticeable CA and the vignetting isn't that bad and can just be corrected in post.

Comments about Bower 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I'm a student filmmaker who uses an slr. I like the look cine lenses have. For the longest time I've used Bowers' 85mm lens, but having this now makes things a lot easier. The minimum focus distance is awesome for those macro shots, and the overall zoomed-outness is really great.

For some reason, though, video looks more crisp with the 85mm. Maybe something's wrong with my 35mm or something, but it's nothing too noticeable.

Oh yeah, how could I forget? It's also super affordable. Cheaper than Rokinon and Samyang, but same quality.

Amazing Image For A Great Price

Comments about Bower 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Canon EF Mount:

If I had one complaint about this lens, it'd be that its aperture doesn't open as wide as the Bower/Rokinon/Samyang lenses from 24-85mm. That said, this lens matched the brightness of a 58mm photo lens I already owned, which made it perfect for my uses.
The lens has some barrel distortion, but not nearly as much as I was prepared to deal with. No problems focusing to infinity, and it has an incredibly close focusing distance. Macro photography is a cinch.
Build quality is solid. Love that the lens hood is removable, so it can be used with a matte box - also love that the lens has filter threading, though I have yet to purchase any filters for this particular threading.
Using it handheld for museum photos - sans follow focus - it was not uncomfortable to adjust the gearing, but I believe the lens will definitely shine for focus- and aperture- pulling with these systems.
The lens is a great deal for anybody looking to start their cinema collection on the wide end - but if you need more than 2.2, you'll have to start with the far pricier and far more restricted 24mm t/1.5.

Comments about Bower 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I purchased this lens to work with my BMCC. Having shot with it a number of times now, I can strongly vouch for the performance and quality of this lens.
I pair it with a Canon 24-70 f2.8 L II lens, and it easily holds it's own in terms of image quality.

Having used Rokinon lenses in the very recent past, and knowing that the Bower lenses are slightly cheaper, I was concerned that I might be buying a lens with a cheaper body or lesser performance. I can confidently say that neither seems to be the case. I'd buy Bower lenses again in a heartbeat.

Comments about Bower 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Canon EF Mount:

Unless you go Rokinon, Samyang, or above will you find a brand that balances the design Bowers brings to the table. The Bowers line isn't a cheap knock off version of Rokinon, it's simply a more economic design.

I use all of my lenses for small budget film work and film school as well as photography and after a few low key tests with this guy I'll say that at T4-8 it's comparable with any of the more expensive lenses int he class above it.

It can be a little soft wide open is my only complaint however I often shoot with enough lighting for higher T/f stops.

Comments about Bower 16mm T2.2 Cine Lens for Canon EF Mount:

I recently purchased this lens. I already had the cine 35mm which I love and the 24mm both primes sharper than my canon zooms. The results have been excellent with video quality sharp especially if you shoot one stop down at 2.8 or above. The lens was excellent in very rainy and cold conditions on location for a TV sizzle reel. For the money you would pay for a Zeiss Cine Prime or Canon Cine Prime you can outfit your lens set with the whole line from ultra wide to the 85mm.

I bought this lens to enhance my video productions with my Canon T4i. The lens gives me a beautiful cinematic look to my interviews and b-roll. It is easy to focus and iris, giving me a wide range of depth of field to play around with.
