The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a true hybrid camera designed for both professional photo and video use. It features a 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor and a 4-CPU Venus Engine, capable of capturing high-resolution JPEG and RAW stills, as well as UHD 4K 3840x2160 30p/24p and cinematic DCI 4K 4096x2160 video at 24p. Like its predecessor, the GH4 features a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body, while offering increased resolution on both the OLED monitor and electronic viewfinder. It also features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC technology, in-camera creative controls, and a high-speed 49-point autofocus in both photo and video mode.

The GH4 delivers video quality surpassing many professional video cameras. Video can be recorded in a variety of formats, from efficient AVCHD and AVCHD Progressive, to 200 Mbps All-Intra and 100 Mbps IPB MOV and MP4 formats. And because the GH4 is a global camera, the system frequency can be switched between 59.94 Hz (23.98 Hz) and 50 Hz, yielding a variety of recording options including 23.98p, 25p, 29.97p, 50p, and 59.94p. The system can also be switched to 24 Hz to capture true 24p in HD and 4K resolutions.

Video and photos are recorded to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. For high bit-rate 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps formats, SDHC/SDXC UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) cards are supported and recommended. Video recorded to SD cards is 4:2:0 8-bit. Real-time 4:2:2 8-bit and 4:2:2 10-bit video can also be sent to an external monitor or recorder with an optional micro HDMI cable. Additional video features include focus peaking, time code support, and cine-like gamma options. For unique expressions, VBR (Variable Frame Rate), time lapse, and stop motion animation videos can be recording internally without the need for additional post-production processing. The GH4 comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, battery charger with AC cable, body cap, hot shoe cover, USB cable, shoulder strap, and DVD with supplied software.

16.05 Megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
The 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor delivers high-quality images with high sensitivity and quick response times. The increased signal speed readout helps to suppress the effects of rolling shutter. In conjunction with the quad-core Venus Engine image processor, you'll enjoy dramatically improved sensitivity (maximum ISO 25600), gradation performance, resolution, and color reproduction.
Micro Four Thirds System and Lens Mount
The DMC-GH4's 4/3" type sensor is large enough for shallow depth of field and yet small enough to take advantage of lighter, more compact lenses than a larger format camera would require. Plus, the short flange focal distance of the Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount makes it possible to add optional adapters (sold separately) to use a wide range of lenses, including PL-mount cinema lenses.
Dual OLED Displays - Monitor and Live View Finder
High-speed, organic LED displays are used for both the Live View Finder and the rear monitor. The 3.0" monitor features a 1,036K-dot resolution and a touchscreen interface for intuitive control, while the LVF features a 2,359K-dot resolution. These displays feature 100% coverage and a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. An Eye Sensor automatically switches between the Live View-Finder and the rear monitor, for easy shooting with both.
Magnesium Alloy, Weather Sealed Body
The DMC-GH4 features a magnesium alloy full die cast front and rear frame. A splash and dustproof design is achieved by tightly sealing the joints and control components. To further meet the demands of professional use, the shutter is rated for approximately 200,000 releases.
Wi-Fi with NFC Technology
The DMC-GH4 integrates Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC, letting you use the Panasonic Image App for remote photo and video shooting with compatible smartphones or tablets. The app also lets you embed location data to an image after shooting. If your mobile device isn't NFC compatible, you can still connect to the camera by scanning a QR code displayed on the GH4's monitor.
49-Area AF / Custom Multi AF
The newly developed AF system features 49 points, giving you more flexibility when composing shots. The Custom Multi mode extends that flexibility even more with the ability to freely select what blocks to focus out of the 49 possible focusing areas.
High-Speed Autofocus
The high-precision Contrast AF integrates DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology to achieve AF speeds of approximately 0.07 sec in AFS mode. This enables the camera to shoot bursts of 12 fps in AFS mode.
Silent Mode
The Silent mode switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic and turns off sounds, while suppressing the AD assist lamp and flash with just a single setting. This is useful when capturing photos in situations where noise and light from the camera would be a distraction to performers or people around you.
In-Camera RAW Data Development
Shoot RAW photos and process the images in-camera to create JPEG images, instead of relying on post-processing. You can adjust the color space setting (sRGB / AdobeRGB), white balance, noise reduction, sharpness, and hue. Lumix's Photo Style, Intelligent D-Range Control, and Intelligent Resolution can also be applied.
Picture Profiles
Choose from a range of Photo Styles and Creative Control modes. Photo Styles for stills or video include Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, and Custom. Contrast, sharpness, noise reduction, saturation, and hue parameters can be adjusted for each mode and even set into the camera's memory.
Professional 4K Video Recording
The DMC-GH4 brings the GH-line into the 4K age by offering both 16:9 UHD 4K 3840x2160 video at 23.98p, 24p or 29.97p, and 17:9 DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) 4K 4096x2160 videos at 24p. 4K resolutions can be recorded as MOV or MP4 files in high bitrate 100 Mbps IPB codec. When recording at 100 Mbps, you will need an SDHC/SDXC memory card capable of handling the transfer speed.

Please note: For better quality, 4K recording modes use a 1:1 pixel map of the sensor. This yields a slight crop of the sensor, resulting in approximately a full-frame crop factor of approximately 2.3x when shooting DCI 4K resolution.
Selectable System Frequency
The DMC-GH4 is a true global camera, with system frequency switchable from 59.94 Hz (23.98 Hz) and 50 Hz. You can also select 24 Hz frequency for true 24 fps cinematic video.
VFR (Variable Frame Rate)
The VFR mode enables Full HD video recording with slow/fast motion, depending on the video format and system frequency selected.

Versatile Video Recording Formats
Choose the video format that is right for each project. The DMC-GH4 is capable of ultra high bitrate video recording at 200 Mbps (All-Intra) or 100 Mbps (IPB). Available formats include MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive, and AVCHD at a variety of frame rates. In MP4 / MOV, high quality LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) sound can be recorded. All internally recorded video codecs use 4:2:0 color sampling and an 8-bit color depth.
Real-Time 4:2:2 Output with HDMI
Send 4:2:2 8-bit or 4:2:2 10-bit video in real-time to external monitors or recorders via the micro HDMI output. An optional micro HDMI cable is required. When outputting a 4:2:2 10-bit signal over HDMI, video cannot be recorded on the SDHX/SDXC memory card in the camera.
Focus Peaking
For easy focusing, the GH4 incorporates a Focus Peaking function that shows the peak of focus in MF and AF+MF modes. Users can see the peaking of focus while monitoring the subject in live view. It can be set to HIGH / LOW / OFF and the color can also be changed to blue, white or orange according to the color of the shooting scene during live view. Focus peaking is also available while remote photo/video shooting with smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi.
Luminance Level Adjustment
In addition to the standard luminance level of 16-235 and 16-255, the DMC-GH4 also offers 0-255.

I had been looking at several DSLR-type cameras for a few months and I had the oppurtunity to shoot some sample video with 2 or 3 of them but I was unable to get my hands on the GH4. I had never used a M4/3 sensor before and I had concerns on how shallow the depth of focus would be.I was originally planning to wait until Photokina 2014 was over and all of the new cameras were announced, namely 7D mkII. But then, I watched 2 camera reviews. One by Dave Dugdale and the other by Philip Bloom. Both of which produced very in depth reviews on the GH4. I was then able to get a good visual of what the camera could do. Obviously, I was impressed. I then made the choice of not waiting on the "other cameras" to come out because of the overwhelming amount of features that the GH4 has. Some of these features will probably never be put into a prosumer level Canon, focus peaking and zebras not to mention having a cool "party trick" of internal 4K. Nikon may include some of these features but I wouldn't bet on it for a few more years. The camera from the video side of things is phenomenal. The amount of detail that you get from the 50/100/200mbs 1080p footage is outstanding. Then you look at the 4K and cinema 4K(only 24fps) footage and it's like getting glasses for the first time. All of the detail that is captured in the 4K footage is breath taking. Some of the first 4K "test footage" clips that I shot were of a series of soy bean fields that were on rolling hills. At f8 (35mm eq of f16) with the Panasonic 25mm f1.4(50mm f2.8 eq), I was able to see ants crawling on a leaf of a soy bean plant that was approximately 10ft away from the camera! That made me feel very content with my purchase. ;-DThe stills side of the camera is great as well. Although I purchased it primarily for the video capabilities, I have been very pleased with the photographs. My first outing with it as a stills camera was at my daughters birthday party 2 days after it was delivered to me. I was able to get some quality pictures with it. A family member of mine that uses full frame sensor cameras was even impressed by the stills that it produced. The auto focus was/is extremely quick. I have yet to have the GH4 "hunt" for focus. The focus with the 25mm 1.4 lens can still get very shallow (See pic). Its not as shallow as a D810/610 or 5D/6D can get but it very respectable. Again very pleased.I have not tested the low light capabilities of the GH4 yet but I DO KNOW that it is NOT the a7s. I haven't, as of yet, seen anything in the GH4's footage that has me regretting my purchase at all.It took me about an afternoon to get use to the menus and where each feature was located. Now, 2 weeks later, I can just about change the settings blind folded. The camera itself is very user friendly. The EVF is an awesome feature too. Now it doesn't matter how bright the shooting environment is, the EVF is there to save the day. For video, using the EVF gives you another point of contact with the camera that helps you stabilize the it.The battery last forever. All day shooting has finally arrived. I have, on several occasions, shot video for approximately 6+ hours WITHOUT changing the battery. This will definitely benefit the time lapse shooters as well. If they need to hike in to a remote location to shoot, it will allow them to maintain a small, compact gear bag even for an extended multiple day trip.CON:The audio from the Rode Video Mic Pro does produce some nasty digital noise. If you cut out the 14-18khz in the audio EQ in post then its tolerable but still noticeable to trained ears. I believe that Panasonic has recently found a fix and will correct the issue if you send the camera back to them for a few days (Sept 2014). For the footage/shoots that require solid audio, I only use the camera's internal audio for syncing purposes anyways so its not that big of a deal to me.If you are currently considering getting this camera, you need to order today. It has very few limitations/cons compared to the amount of features/pros that it offers.I am currently using the GH4 for b-roll and interview purposes for outdoor industry entertainment as well as video shorts for my church.

Based on video shooting only: The GH4 has amazing image quality at 4K, lots of detail, very very sharp. Lots of Pros, that camera is almost perfect for the price. Buy it, but before that, read the following.

The biggest downside is obviously the Low Light capability. Man, at ISO 800, it's ok, but at 1600, your footage is barely usable. You don't want to go at iso 1600. This is not a low light camera.

The Sony a7s low light performance makes me rethink about my choice of product. I think i did wrong, because i'll have to shoot indoor event, soon or later.

A great overall camera should perform a lot better than the GH4 in low light, but for the price, you have a lot of Pros, including 4K video recording without having to go external. It's just not a low light camera.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I've had this camera for about a week now and I still can't believe how much better this is than the Canon I've been using for a few years now. Obviously the 4K is great (by this time we've all seen the footage) but it's all the other features that make this camera worth it. Coming from Canon I've gotten used to shooting slowmo at 60fps in 720 so the fact that this goes up to 96fps in 1080 and actully looks good is fantastic. Also having zebras, focus peaking, histogram, etc. is great. I still plan on using mostly Canon glass, which means I'm probably going to have to invest in a speedbooster, but other than that I have absolutly nothing else to complain about... ...except low light. It's not great in low light.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

Unlike most reviewers, we came to the GH4 from the pro video camera side, not the DSLR side. We started with the Panny HPX500 and 170, known as P2 cameras for their very expensive recording cards. For ENG style shooting, they are hard to beat. But the prime lens depth of field was very difficult to achieve so we searched for video cameras that offered that look and work flow. That lead us to the AF100s and micro four thirds lenses.

I hears some complaints about low light issues. Our corporate interview kit includes a couple of Voigtlander .95f lenses, which completely solves this problem. The GH4 is the next extension of the AF100 line. It offers the most video like controls in a mirror-less camera. The 4K is the best in the market. The Lumix lenses, especially the 12-35 and 35-100 are extremely useful and bring back some of the ENG versatility that prime lenses take away.

No small form factor camera can solve every problem, like a traditional ENG style camcorder can. But this one comes the closest. And the positives far outweigh the negs. Like, no moire problems. 96 fps slo mo. The longest battery life I have ever seen. External apps that can drive the camera. Extreme sharpness. The camera buttons and menu's are a huge improvement over the GH2. Almost all recording formats are covered, all that I need for corporate video anyway. From 24p, 30p and 60p and also recording in MP4, MOV and AVCHD. The ability to mount this small lightweight camera on a stabilizer or car mount is one thing that the full size camcorders cannot do.

Gamma curves, Cine-D and the possibility of V-log coming to the GH4 make this hands down the best sub $10k 4K camera on the market. Combined with a SmallHD DP7 and you have ALL of the tools you need for perfect exposure and film making.

Using it for low budget commercial use, event videos & promos. Switched over after using Canon (6D/T5i/M) for a few years & became progressively dissatisfied with Canon.
The GH4 is comfortably compact, yet bursting with functionality & options. I have been so satisfied since purchasing a few months ago.
Only complaint, a little too noisy with high ISOs in low light, but not unusable.
Also wish the remote iOS app had a full screen preview option.

I have been with Panasonic since the GH2 and this is the best yet. Timelapse, SloMo, 4K, 16mp stills all from the same device! Sure the shadows are a bit noisy and in the stills mode maybe a tad more resolution would be nice, but overall it is truly a hybrid camera. I get great results in both stills and video.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

Obviously, this is probably one of the most thoroughly reviewed products out there, so I'm not sure what I can add except that the addition of 4K to my video work has been a real game changer and I love the interface and how easy the transition is from the gh3 to this one. Although the body and form factor are almost the same, I've already found a preference for using this one even when shooting in 1080HD. The menu gives me so many more useful options, such as the pedestal, highlight/shadow controls, and the focus peaking is must have for me now. And for the price, I think it's the best deal out there.

Also don't be looking for software to downscale the
4K to 1080p, it came with the camera from Panasonic!
Now I run the 4K through the panasonic software and it gives me a separate 1080 file with sharp video to place on my timeline. No need to get a new computer or software, to edit at 1080. I use my old Pinnacle 14 which I'm use to. I'll wait for 4K blu-ray burners to produce, before I upgrade.

What makes this camera better than the Sony is the internal recording of 4K. But you can also add external recording via an HDMI cable and caputure larger files on actual hard drives. I am still learning and practicing with this camera after serveral months. Working to find that perfect looking image I am looking for. That's simply a personal choice, otherwise, this camera gets great overall images. I use this camera for professional video. After reading errors occuring with the Blackmagic Cinema 4K camera and blackmagic's lack of addressing the issue, I felt at lost for an affordable 4K option. Then this camera was released and changed everything. I do not regret my purchase at all. In fact, I just provied footage to another company across state that has sworn to the GH$ as well.

The clarity of even the 1080 on this camera is so great compared to the canon codec. 96fps is so handy... I probably overuse that feature. But I do wish I had really recognized the low light weakness of this camera before purchasing. There is a lot of noise and banding in shadows. ISO performance isn't impressive. The metabones speedbooster has helped a lot by making more light available, but I still find myself desiring better low light performance. I also miss the ridiculously shallow depth of field achievable with a full frame camera, but the speedbooster helps take a step in that direction as well. Haven't been super impressed by stills. All that to say, I still love this camera... But I wish more reviews reflected its flaws as well as its outstanding strengths.

I own a Blackmagic and a 5D - and this GH4 is the perfect addition to the team. I'm shooting a doc so there's something to having a camera that is ready to go at the drop of a hat. It powers up SO fast. And the dial up top makes it more nimble than the 5D. Of course it would have been great if it was full size sensor but for the price and for the quality of the footage this camera is perfect.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I have sold my Canon 6D, and bought Panasonic GH4. This is a great camera. So much lighter than the 6D (if you count in the lenses too). Smaller, easier to handle, and I found that I tend to carry this camera much more often than 6D, and the best camera is the one you have with you. For me, this is superior camera for travel, it shoots very nice stills, and video... Video is GREAT. I have only 3 lenses with this one, and that is more/less enough for me. The ones I have are:
                      42.5mm f 1.2
                      14-140mm f 3.5-5.6
                      8mm f 3.5

all of the above mentioned lenses are panasonic lenses.

Drawbacks would be that there are not that many fast lenses, especially for longer zoom ranges. The camera is not as good as 6D when it comes to low light situations, but for my use case, it is good enough.

If you want much lighter camera that can shoot stills and do 4k video, and you do not want to carry too much weight with you, this is a great choice. I know that some of my friends are also considering ditching their dslr gear (canon/nikon) in favor of this camera just because of the weight/size.

I also love the fully articulating LCD, and touch screen is also a great plus. EVF is not really great, but I would say it is good enough.

Just updated from my old T3i to the GH4. Even though I haven't had enough time with it, it feels great. The small sensor is not a negative aspect if you're like me and will use it with a Metabones Speedbooster. Though it doesn't excel in low-light like the 5D mk3 or the low-light monster A7s, it's not as bad as people say it is. After working with the T3i over 2 years I was used to shoot in poorly lit places like bars and parties, using fast lenses, ISOs between 800-1600 and Neat Video (5-10%) to reduce noise and it always worked well for me, so the GH4 will be perfect: fast lenses combined with the Speedbooster, you can go up to 3200 ISO and still get away with it.Another great thing about the GH4 is you can use a lot of vintage glass. Personally, I'll only be using it with old FD lenses (at least until I buy an EF Speedbooster).Filming at 96fps is AMAZING. Wouldn't recommend shooting 4k handheld, at least not with narrow lenses. What really made me choose the GH4 over the A7s is the new 4k Photo mode, perfect to shoot in anamorphic.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I use this camera mainly for video, filming commercials and corporate projects.I come from Canon and decided not to abandon my 5D Mark II completely. I still keep it for stills and as a backup camera. Needless to say I don't use it much anymore. I bought the Panasonic 12-35mm and it works a charm with the GH4. So many pro features I can finally take advantage of, this is amazing, how did I manage before?I love the 4K, the slowmo (96fps) and smaller details like the integrated timelapse, the flip screen...it all makes the experience so much smoother. On the downside, it's not always easy to find the best picture profile and noise is the enemy here. Better invest in fast lenses if you don't want to have too many problems in post. I wonder if the VLog that's supposed to come in a firmware update is going to make that better. Sony A7S beats the GH4 hands down in low light situations. But even with that, I wouldn't trade my GH4 for the Sony :)

Already owned the GH3. Am not shooting video mainly stills and i bought this because of the improved AF, Viewfinder/LCD and Focus Peaking. Loved the GH3. This now even better. I believe this to be one of the best handling cameras on the planet. Everything is on the right place. I own a Canon5dMk3 and a 6 D as well as a D800 and take this one over the other 3 90% of the time.

had the GH3 before and the GH4 ads some nice improvements. I don't shoot video much and upgraded because of focus peaking, better autofocus and the better viewfinder/lcd. The GH3 was already a superb camera and this now is even better. In my view one of the best handling cameras on the planet.
