The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a true hybrid camera designed for both professional photo and video use. It features a 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor and a 4-CPU Venus Engine, capable of capturing high-resolution JPEG and RAW stills, as well as UHD 4K 3840x2160 30p/24p and cinematic DCI 4K 4096x2160 video at 24p. Like its predecessor, the GH4 features a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body, while offering increased resolution on both the OLED monitor and electronic viewfinder. It also features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC technology, in-camera creative controls, and a high-speed 49-point autofocus in both photo and video mode.

The GH4 delivers video quality surpassing many professional video cameras. Video can be recorded in a variety of formats, from efficient AVCHD and AVCHD Progressive, to 200 Mbps All-Intra and 100 Mbps IPB MOV and MP4 formats. And because the GH4 is a global camera, the system frequency can be switched between 59.94 Hz (23.98 Hz) and 50 Hz, yielding a variety of recording options including 23.98p, 25p, 29.97p, 50p, and 59.94p. The system can also be switched to 24 Hz to capture true 24p in HD and 4K resolutions.

Video and photos are recorded to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. For high bit-rate 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps formats, SDHC/SDXC UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) cards are supported and recommended. Video recorded to SD cards is 4:2:0 8-bit. Real-time 4:2:2 8-bit and 4:2:2 10-bit video can also be sent to an external monitor or recorder with an optional micro HDMI cable. Additional video features include focus peaking, time code support, and cine-like gamma options. For unique expressions, VBR (Variable Frame Rate), time lapse, and stop motion animation videos can be recording internally without the need for additional post-production processing. The GH4 comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, battery charger with AC cable, body cap, hot shoe cover, USB cable, shoulder strap, and DVD with supplied software.

16.05 Megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
The 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor delivers high-quality images with high sensitivity and quick response times. The increased signal speed readout helps to suppress the effects of rolling shutter. In conjunction with the quad-core Venus Engine image processor, you'll enjoy dramatically improved sensitivity (maximum ISO 25600), gradation performance, resolution, and color reproduction.
Micro Four Thirds System and Lens Mount
The DMC-GH4's 4/3" type sensor is large enough for shallow depth of field and yet small enough to take advantage of lighter, more compact lenses than a larger format camera would require. Plus, the short flange focal distance of the Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount makes it possible to add optional adapters (sold separately) to use a wide range of lenses, including PL-mount cinema lenses.
Dual OLED Displays - Monitor and Live View Finder
High-speed, organic LED displays are used for both the Live View Finder and the rear monitor. The 3.0" monitor features a 1,036K-dot resolution and a touchscreen interface for intuitive control, while the LVF features a 2,359K-dot resolution. These displays feature 100% coverage and a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. An Eye Sensor automatically switches between the Live View-Finder and the rear monitor, for easy shooting with both.
Magnesium Alloy, Weather Sealed Body
The DMC-GH4 features a magnesium alloy full die cast front and rear frame. A splash and dustproof design is achieved by tightly sealing the joints and control components. To further meet the demands of professional use, the shutter is rated for approximately 200,000 releases.
Wi-Fi with NFC Technology
The DMC-GH4 integrates Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC, letting you use the Panasonic Image App for remote photo and video shooting with compatible smartphones or tablets. The app also lets you embed location data to an image after shooting. If your mobile device isn't NFC compatible, you can still connect to the camera by scanning a QR code displayed on the GH4's monitor.
49-Area AF / Custom Multi AF
The newly developed AF system features 49 points, giving you more flexibility when composing shots. The Custom Multi mode extends that flexibility even more with the ability to freely select what blocks to focus out of the 49 possible focusing areas.
High-Speed Autofocus
The high-precision Contrast AF integrates DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology to achieve AF speeds of approximately 0.07 sec in AFS mode. This enables the camera to shoot bursts of 12 fps in AFS mode.
Silent Mode
The Silent mode switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic and turns off sounds, while suppressing the AD assist lamp and flash with just a single setting. This is useful when capturing photos in situations where noise and light from the camera would be a distraction to performers or people around you.
In-Camera RAW Data Development
Shoot RAW photos and process the images in-camera to create JPEG images, instead of relying on post-processing. You can adjust the color space setting (sRGB / AdobeRGB), white balance, noise reduction, sharpness, and hue. Lumix's Photo Style, Intelligent D-Range Control, and Intelligent Resolution can also be applied.
Picture Profiles
Choose from a range of Photo Styles and Creative Control modes. Photo Styles for stills or video include Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, and Custom. Contrast, sharpness, noise reduction, saturation, and hue parameters can be adjusted for each mode and even set into the camera's memory.
Professional 4K Video Recording
The DMC-GH4 brings the GH-line into the 4K age by offering both 16:9 UHD 4K 3840x2160 video at 23.98p, 24p or 29.97p, and 17:9 DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) 4K 4096x2160 videos at 24p. 4K resolutions can be recorded as MOV or MP4 files in high bitrate 100 Mbps IPB codec. When recording at 100 Mbps, you will need an SDHC/SDXC memory card capable of handling the transfer speed.

Please note: For better quality, 4K recording modes use a 1:1 pixel map of the sensor. This yields a slight crop of the sensor, resulting in approximately a full-frame crop factor of approximately 2.3x when shooting DCI 4K resolution.
Selectable System Frequency
The DMC-GH4 is a true global camera, with system frequency switchable from 59.94 Hz (23.98 Hz) and 50 Hz. You can also select 24 Hz frequency for true 24 fps cinematic video.
VFR (Variable Frame Rate)
The VFR mode enables Full HD video recording with slow/fast motion, depending on the video format and system frequency selected.

Versatile Video Recording Formats
Choose the video format that is right for each project. The DMC-GH4 is capable of ultra high bitrate video recording at 200 Mbps (All-Intra) or 100 Mbps (IPB). Available formats include MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive, and AVCHD at a variety of frame rates. In MP4 / MOV, high quality LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) sound can be recorded. All internally recorded video codecs use 4:2:0 color sampling and an 8-bit color depth.
Real-Time 4:2:2 Output with HDMI
Send 4:2:2 8-bit or 4:2:2 10-bit video in real-time to external monitors or recorders via the micro HDMI output. An optional micro HDMI cable is required. When outputting a 4:2:2 10-bit signal over HDMI, video cannot be recorded on the SDHX/SDXC memory card in the camera.
Focus Peaking
For easy focusing, the GH4 incorporates a Focus Peaking function that shows the peak of focus in MF and AF+MF modes. Users can see the peaking of focus while monitoring the subject in live view. It can be set to HIGH / LOW / OFF and the color can also be changed to blue, white or orange according to the color of the shooting scene during live view. Focus peaking is also available while remote photo/video shooting with smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi.
Luminance Level Adjustment
In addition to the standard luminance level of 16-235 and 16-255, the DMC-GH4 also offers 0-255.
Additional Video Features

Since I'm retired (with a small income) and I no longer make money using my photo/video gear, the purchase of the Panasonic GH4 was more than a bit of a "stretch" for me - but I'm happy I bought it! I'm still an avid photographer and videographer, and I began to buy into the MFT format about a year and a half ago, mostly for weight/size/price reasons - but this gear is so much fun to use (and GOOD!) that I've shot about 40,000 still frames and some video with it. With a little work done on the still images, really GOOD 16"x20"+ prints are easy to make, and the video from my G5 and G6 cameras has been excellent (and it is even better with the GH4!). As a result, I've sold off most of my video cameras and Nikon stills gear, and replaced them with (mostly) Panasonic gear. In the process of doing this, and also being a lens and "sharpness-nut", I've tried (and bought) many lenses for this system, and my findings (so far...;-), are here: hLenses.htm For more photo samples from those lenses, Included in the first article are comments on image-quality, optimum-stops, etc. - and also on compatibility among the several MFT-lens manufacturers, plus comments on various types of adapters for use of other-format lenses on MFT cameras. The GH4 (in addition to its great video and stills image-quality) has added several features that I like: zebras (with assignable values), focus-peaking, a sharp EVF and rear-screen with good color and contrast, mic and headphone ports, MANY external controls and buttons for the most used functions, tonal curve adjustments, 4K and variable-speed video, etc. These are in addition to the usual ability to adjust EVERYTHING on the Panasonic cameras to taste (I really appreciate being able to adjust all of the parameters of the taking image, and then being able to adjust those of the viewfinders to match so that I can predict from the VFs what the recorded images will look like. This light and compact gear is just plain great, and FUN TO USE! 8^) --DR

I had this camera for two months and loved it. Until I decided to take pictures last weekend for a wedding. At dark setting, while on manual mode the flash fired even when it was at close position and emitting a terrible burning smell. I tried switching to electronic shutter and the problem goes away. But as soon I go back to mechanical shutter, the problems comes back. It's unfortunate, I am no longer eligible for exchange since it's past 30 days so I'm sending the camera back to manufacturer for service. Not very happy that I have send it for service already, I've only used it 3-4 times on shoots.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I purchased this camera primarily for shooting company promotional videos. So far, it hasn't disappointed. The battery life is about twice that of my old Canon and even at 1080, the shots look great. This camera loves light. Going mirrorless was definitely the way to go. The electronic viewfinder is extremely clear and the fold-out touch screen makes focusing in manual mode extremely easy. Thoughtful details like a built-in audio levels meter, accessible mic/line in and virtual float level really emphasize the focus on the video shooter.I find that the audio pre-amps run a little hot and the mics overload frequently so having that meter is necessary. If you're shooting interviews, I'd definitely make sure the person asking the interview questions is standing behind the camera and not directly to the side. I won't be giving up my little Zoom H4N anytime soon, but the on-body audio is great as a secondary source and Premiere has no problem syncing the audio coming off this camera. The micro 4/3rds format has some great, albeit, expensive lenses available. I'm mostly shooting with the Panny Leica DG Summilux 25mm 1.4. It gives me a nice blend of DoF for exterior shots and the bokeh I want for interviews without the distortion I'd get from running the much more expensive zoom lens. Budget for a lens for this camera because they aren't inexpensive.Adapters for micro 4/3rds are extremely pricey. The converters that allow for auto-focus and aperture change using my old Canon glass are more expensive than most of the lenses I've been shooting with. Hopefully, the popularity of this format will change that. Unless you can change aperture with a ring on your lens, the more affordable adapters are pretty much useless. It may be worth it to spend the money and get an adapter if you've got a bunch of old manual lenses from the 70s and 80s hanging around or cine lenses that don't do electronic aperture. Be aware though, that he crop factor when converting from F-mount and EF/EF-S mounts to micro 4/3rds can be pretty dramatic.I like the flexibility of shooting at 4K and down-converting to 1080 if I need to.There are a few caveats, however. First off, I find that this camera doesn't do well in lower light. I have to open the lens up about 2/3rds of a stop further than I used to with my previous camera. I don't see too much grain or fuzz when I turn up the ISO, but I have noticed a little bit of grain in my exported stills when I pull them out of Premiere. The camera also has a moire problem. Some of the company uniforms and upholstery distorted when film straight on under my hair light.I also find some of the menus a little cumbersome. Setting custom White Balance seemed a little difficult. I like Canon's white-balance workflow a little better, though that may be because it's what I've been using for years. The white-balance presets don't seem as accurate as what I'm used to, either. Shooting for daylight under 56K Alzo Video bulbs gave me a little bit of the green tint that CFLs are famous for. I didn't have this problem on prior cameras at the same WB setting. I also noticed yellow and green tints in daylight when shooting outside with no lighting reinforcement. Manual WB is definitely recommended. Some users complain of slow auto-focus with this rig, but I found that the mixed mode of manual with AF is a perfect solution when I go looking for bokeh. The element that pushed me to choose this camera is really its popularity online. There are a number of video shooters who have moved to this platform and are releasing tutorials on this camera. A tool is only as valuable as your ability to use it and I like learning from others.Overall, if you're in the market for a new video camera in the DSLR or micro 4/3rds form factor, this one is the one to get.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

After carefully reading about micro four thirds cameras my choice was the Lumix GH4 for its myriad of features, 4K cinema video capabilities, and a camera that helps guide you through the complexities of filming. It is primarily a film camera and it accomplishes that task beautifully. This is a camera you use and love to have.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

My first and immediate impression was that it doesn't look or feel like your typical dslr camera, but after a couple of weeks of playing around with it, I've grown to really appreciate the size and sturdy feel of the camera. I know most people may have second thoughts about the small sensor, but the 4k capability more than makes up for it, plus you have the option of picking up the metabones speedbooster, which really opens up the playing field. Great camera, I'm glad I picked it up!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

Everything you've heard about this camera is true. The Panasonic GH4 is truly revolutionary in terms of professional video recording features packed into such an affordable and small package. I am a full-time freelance videographer, and like many others, I am in the process of moving away from using larger DSLR bodies and lenses in favor of a smaller, faster and more affordable mirror-less format. And to be honest, while 4K is great and really makes this camera future-proof, what really sold me on it were the professional video features such as focus peaking, zebras, beautiful articulating OLED screen, high-quality electronic viewfinder and the ability to adapt almost any lens on the market; not to mention the ridiculously long battery life! The only real downside of this camera is the much talked-about low light performance. It tends to get pretty noisy above ISO 800. However, when paired with fast lenses, I don't think it's as much of an issue as people make it out to be. Overall, I'd say the low-light performance of the GH4 is comparable to my Canon 7D, which I've never had any issues with in that regard. In most real-world situations, I rarely find the need to shoot above ISO 1250.All in all, the GH4 is an absolutely fantastic camera for video production. Of course, it's not perfect - no camera is, but at this price point there really is nothing else that is comparable in terms of features and image quality. The Sony A7S is perhaps it's closest competitor, especially in terms of low-light performance, but it doesn't have internal 4K recording and costs $ more.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

If you're looking at this camera, you know what you're going to get...and I guess if you don't, then buy it and be surprised.

ONLY gripes: WiFi connectivity with my iphone makes me want to punch small, even adorable, things in the face. Sure, I eventually get it working as it should. But this is a compliment to my persistence and technical savvy...not the panasonic geniuses that decided this functionality was good enough.

          Also...
If you're expecting a dynamite blow to your hacked gh2, ONLY in terms of low light, lower the bar a touch then be pleasantly surprised. I was expecting something pretty groovy out of it and was caught unimpressed. Better than caught with my pants down, yay?!?

Other than those things...love to pick up this camera and see where my creativity goes!!!! It's a brilliant brilliant tool for commercial and private use. Period!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

This camera has a ton of great features.1) 4K for under $. You can't beat that.2) 96 fps at 1080.3) Light and portable.4) Intuitive and easy to use.5) Great picture profiles and functions.6) Records to affordable SD cards. There are also some downfalls.1) Micro 4/3 sensor. Hard to use Canon lenses. Can't wait for the metabones speedbooster to come out for gh4.2) I wish there was a bit more dynamic range. Maybe the guys at Magic Lantern will get there hands on it.3) Rolling shutter is present. Not as bad as other DSLRs, but still noticeable.

After 25 years of owning a retail studio and carrying big gear I closed my studio. One effect of shooting for so long is a case of tennis elbow. So I wanted to go lighter. And I love how light it is. The video, even just 1080p on MP4 is so much sharper than my Canon 5D Mark III. This produces great stills and I can shoot 2x3 or 16x9 or my new favorite - 4x3 ratio. The manual is not as good as Canon's - no index in the back.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

This camera is an affordable 4K video camera that also shoots great pictures. I know now I can take cutting edge 4K video of my family. But it is also easy to take 1080 videos. Also, for regular pictures it has focus peaking so you could use other 4/3 lenses that don't have autofocus but you can still quickly focus with the focus peaking. I also like the wifi which allows me to control the camera with my iPhone and also transfer pictures to the iPad and iPhone and my iMac wirelessly. I really like all the function buttons you can assign to as will as the custom settings that you can program. I can regularly quickly switch from shooting jpeg plus raw, or just jpeg, or landscape or black and white. It can shoot pictures rapidly per each second and since you can shoot in 4k, you can essentially pull high resolution pictures from the 4K video. Essentially, you could shoot in short 4K bursts and capture the best frames. As it is a 4/3 camera it is not too big and not too heavy. I was looking for a camera that would be a major step up from the photos and video my iPhone 5s shoots. This camera clearly serves that purpose. I am currently using the 14-140 Lumix lens. It gives me incredibly versatiliy as I can shoot very wide and also have the equivalent of 280 zoom equivalent on a 35 mm camera.

I use this camera professionally for video production and it's an amazing tool! With all the new features, 4K, Variable frame rate, zebra, peaking, swivel screen and it's amazing image quality, it's a no brainier. Our main cameras are Canon 5DMK3's and they are amazing tools, but the GH4, just brings additional production value to our current tool set.

The only thing I am getting accustomed too is having to reset settings when the camera shuts off, that is the only con that I have with the camera. It turns on quickly and has many advantages!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

Today I'm parting with two cameras that I love. The Lumix GH2 and GH3 are terrific cameras. They definitely produced impressive video and stills for me and my clients. I found them easy to use and great for travel. The GH4 has proven to expand on these strengths. My high speed manual prime lenses are now much easier to focus, the new WiFi app for the GH4 better controls video through my tablet, and the video footage is better than ever when I "down-res" from 4K to 1080. However, of equal importance, the Lumix GH4 has a higher sync speed, making it better in the studio and on location when I am using flashes for my still photography. Granted, I give up wider shots, stronger ISO performance, shallower depth of field and the creamier bokeh that come with full frame cameras, but I've never regretted shifting from my DSLR to the Panasonic micro four thirds system. I look forward to plenty of high performance shooting with my manual lenses and Lumix professional lenses teamed up with my GH4.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I grew up using Nikon film SLRs and learned to shoot that way. I considered the GH3 when it came out but was discouraged by the quality of the electronic view finder, and a few other missing features. The GH4 is the answer to my urge for a hybrid camera with good features, image quality and compactness. Out of the box I like it a lot. Feels very good in the hand. The viewfinder is great, clear and easy to see (I wear glasses). Within a short period of time your fingers know where all the important buttons are.Lots of operating modes to learn and use. The smart modes are very smart. They do a good job of selecting parameters for the scene. Manual mode is like the old days, and feels very natural. Focus peaking works well with my old Nikkors via a Metabones adaptor. Nice and sharp results. Very easy to get accustomed to autofocus, and well, auto everything else.Video is outstanding. Easily better than my Panasonic TM900, which does a fine job. The 4K downsampled to 1080p is lovely. Using it with the Olympus 25mm 1.8 micro 4/3 lense at the moment. A nice combination. Looking forward to adding a few more native format lenses soon. I like the manual focus Nikkors for video.I love having a viewfinder again. It makes such a huge difference. I also love the multi angle adjustable electronic display. Great for those odd position shots. The built in flash is surprisingly useful. Excellent for fill and general shooting.I couldn't be happier with this camera. It was well worth the wait.
