The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a true hybrid camera designed for both professional photo and video use. It features a 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor and a 4-CPU Venus Engine, capable of capturing high-resolution JPEG and RAW stills, as well as UHD 4K 3840x2160 30p/24p and cinematic DCI 4K 4096x2160 video at 24p. Like its predecessor, the GH4 features a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body, while offering increased resolution on both the OLED monitor and electronic viewfinder. It also features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC technology, in-camera creative controls, and a high-speed 49-point autofocus in both photo and video mode.

The GH4 delivers video quality surpassing many professional video cameras. Video can be recorded in a variety of formats, from efficient AVCHD and AVCHD Progressive, to 200 Mbps All-Intra and 100 Mbps IPB MOV and MP4 formats. And because the GH4 is a global camera, the system frequency can be switched between 59.94 Hz (23.98 Hz) and 50 Hz, yielding a variety of recording options including 23.98p, 25p, 29.97p, 50p, and 59.94p. The system can also be switched to 24 Hz to capture true 24p in HD and 4K resolutions.

Video and photos are recorded to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. For high bit-rate 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps formats, SDHC/SDXC UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) cards are supported and recommended. Video recorded to SD cards is 4:2:0 8-bit. Real-time 4:2:2 8-bit and 4:2:2 10-bit video can also be sent to an external monitor or recorder with an optional micro HDMI cable. Additional video features include focus peaking, time code support, and cine-like gamma options. For unique expressions, VBR (Variable Frame Rate), time lapse, and stop motion animation videos can be recording internally without the need for additional post-production processing. The GH4 comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, battery charger with AC cable, body cap, hot shoe cover, USB cable, shoulder strap, and DVD with supplied software.

16.05 Megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
The 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor delivers high-quality images with high sensitivity and quick response times. The increased signal speed readout helps to suppress the effects of rolling shutter. In conjunction with the quad-core Venus Engine image processor, you'll enjoy dramatically improved sensitivity (maximum ISO 25600), gradation performance, resolution, and color reproduction.
Micro Four Thirds System and Lens Mount
The DMC-GH4's 4/3" type sensor is large enough for shallow depth of field and yet small enough to take advantage of lighter, more compact lenses than a larger format camera would require. Plus, the short flange focal distance of the Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount makes it possible to add optional adapters (sold separately) to use a wide range of lenses, including PL-mount cinema lenses.
Dual OLED Displays - Monitor and Live View Finder
High-speed, organic LED displays are used for both the Live View Finder and the rear monitor. The 3.0" monitor features a 1,036K-dot resolution and a touchscreen interface for intuitive control, while the LVF features a 2,359K-dot resolution. These displays feature 100% coverage and a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. An Eye Sensor automatically switches between the Live View-Finder and the rear monitor, for easy shooting with both.
Magnesium Alloy, Weather Sealed Body
The DMC-GH4 features a magnesium alloy full die cast front and rear frame. A splash and dustproof design is achieved by tightly sealing the joints and control components. To further meet the demands of professional use, the shutter is rated for approximately 200,000 releases.
Wi-Fi with NFC Technology
The DMC-GH4 integrates Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC, letting you use the Panasonic Image App for remote photo and video shooting with compatible smartphones or tablets. The app also lets you embed location data to an image after shooting. If your mobile device isn't NFC compatible, you can still connect to the camera by scanning a QR code displayed on the GH4's monitor.
49-Area AF / Custom Multi AF
The newly developed AF system features 49 points, giving you more flexibility when composing shots. The Custom Multi mode extends that flexibility even more with the ability to freely select what blocks to focus out of the 49 possible focusing areas.
High-Speed Autofocus
The high-precision Contrast AF integrates DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology to achieve AF speeds of approximately 0.07 sec in AFS mode. This enables the camera to shoot bursts of 12 fps in AFS mode.
Silent Mode
The Silent mode switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic and turns off sounds, while suppressing the AD assist lamp and flash with just a single setting. This is useful when capturing photos in situations where noise and light from the camera would be a distraction to performers or people around you.
In-Camera RAW Data Development
Shoot RAW photos and process the images in-camera to create JPEG images, instead of relying on post-processing. You can adjust the color space setting (sRGB / AdobeRGB), white balance, noise reduction, sharpness, and hue. Lumix's Photo Style, Intelligent D-Range Control, and Intelligent Resolution can also be applied.
Picture Profiles
Choose from a range of Photo Styles and Creative Control modes. Photo Styles for stills or video include Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, and Custom. Contrast, sharpness, noise reduction, saturation, and hue parameters can be adjusted for each mode and even set into the camera's memory.
Professional 4K Video Recording
The DMC-GH4 brings the GH-line into the 4K age by offering both 16:9 UHD 4K 3840x2160 video at 23.98p, 24p or 29.97p, and 17:9 DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) 4K 4096x2160 videos at 24p. 4K resolutions can be recorded as MOV or MP4 files in high bitrate 100 Mbps IPB codec. When recording at 100 Mbps, you will need an SDHC/SDXC memory card capable of handling the transfer speed.

Please note: For better quality, 4K recording modes use a 1:1 pixel map of the sensor. This yields a slight crop of the sensor, resulting in approximately a full-frame crop factor of approximately 2.3x when shooting DCI 4K resolution.
Selectable System Frequency
The DMC-GH4 is a true global camera, with system frequency switchable from 59.94 Hz (23.98 Hz) and 50 Hz. You can also select 24 Hz frequency for true 24 fps cinematic video.
VFR (Variable Frame Rate)
The VFR mode enables Full HD video recording with slow/fast motion, depending on the video format and system frequency selected.

Versatile Video Recording Formats
Choose the video format that is right for each project. The DMC-GH4 is capable of ultra high bitrate video recording at 200 Mbps (All-Intra) or 100 Mbps (IPB). Available formats include MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive, and AVCHD at a variety of frame rates. In MP4 / MOV, high quality LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) sound can be recorded. All internally recorded video codecs use 4:2:0 color sampling and an 8-bit color depth.
Real-Time 4:2:2 Output with HDMI
Send 4:2:2 8-bit or 4:2:2 10-bit video in real-time to external monitors or recorders via the micro HDMI output. An optional micro HDMI cable is required. When outputting a 4:2:2 10-bit signal over HDMI, video cannot be recorded on the SDHX/SDXC memory card in the camera.
Focus Peaking
For easy focusing, the GH4 incorporates a Focus Peaking function that shows the peak of focus in MF and AF+MF modes. Users can see the peaking of focus while monitoring the subject in live view. It can be set to HIGH / LOW / OFF and the color can also be changed to blue, white or orange according to the color of the shooting scene during live view. Focus peaking is also available while remote photo/video shooting with smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi.
Luminance Level Adjustment
In addition to the standard luminance level of 16-235 and 16-255, the DMC-GH4 also offers 0-255.

I had been looking at several DSLR-type cameras for a few months and I had the oppurtunity to shoot some sample video with 2 or 3 of them but I was unable to get my hands on the GH4. I had never used a M4/3 sensor before and I had concerns on how shallow the depth of focus would be.I was originally planning to wait until Photokina 2014 was over and all of the new cameras were announced, namely 7D mkII. But then, I watched 2 camera reviews. One by Dave Dugdale and the other by Philip Bloom. Both of which produced very in depth reviews on the GH4. I was then able to get a good visual of what the camera could do. Obviously, I was impressed. I then made the choice of not waiting on the "other cameras" to come out because of the overwhelming amount of features that the GH4 has. Some of these features will probably never be put into a prosumer level Canon, focus peaking and zebras not to mention having a cool "party trick" of internal 4K. Nikon may include some of these features but I wouldn't bet on it for a few more years. The camera from the video side of things is phenomenal. The amount of detail that you get from the 50/100/200mbs 1080p footage is outstanding. Then you look at the 4K and cinema 4K(only 24fps) footage and it's like getting glasses for the first time. All of the detail that is captured in the 4K footage is breath taking. Some of the first 4K "test footage" clips that I shot were of a series of soy bean fields that were on rolling hills. At f8 (35mm eq of f16) with the Panasonic 25mm f1.4(50mm f2.8 eq), I was able to see ants crawling on a leaf of a soy bean plant that was approximately 10ft away from the camera! That made me feel very content with my purchase. ;-DThe stills side of the camera is great as well. Although I purchased it primarily for the video capabilities, I have been very pleased with the photographs. My first outing with it as a stills camera was at my daughters birthday party 2 days after it was delivered to me. I was able to get some quality pictures with it. A family member of mine that uses full frame sensor cameras was even impressed by the stills that it produced. The auto focus was/is extremely quick. I have yet to have the GH4 "hunt" for focus. The focus with the 25mm 1.4 lens can still get very shallow (See pic). Its not as shallow as a D810/610 or 5D/6D can get but it very respectable. Again very pleased.I have not tested the low light capabilities of the GH4 yet but I DO KNOW that it is NOT the a7s. I haven't, as of yet, seen anything in the GH4's footage that has me regretting my purchase at all.It took me about an afternoon to get use to the menus and where each feature was located. Now, 2 weeks later, I can just about change the settings blind folded. The camera itself is very user friendly. The EVF is an awesome feature too. Now it doesn't matter how bright the shooting environment is, the EVF is there to save the day. For video, using the EVF gives you another point of contact with the camera that helps you stabilize the it.The battery last forever. All day shooting has finally arrived. I have, on several occasions, shot video for approximately 6+ hours WITHOUT changing the battery. This will definitely benefit the time lapse shooters as well. If they need to hike in to a remote location to shoot, it will allow them to maintain a small, compact gear bag even for an extended multiple day trip.CON:The audio from the Rode Video Mic Pro does produce some nasty digital noise. If you cut out the 14-18khz in the audio EQ in post then its tolerable but still noticeable to trained ears. I believe that Panasonic has recently found a fix and will correct the issue if you send the camera back to them for a few days (Sept 2014). For the footage/shoots that require solid audio, I only use the camera's internal audio for syncing purposes anyways so its not that big of a deal to me.If you are currently considering getting this camera, you need to order today. It has very few limitations/cons compared to the amount of features/pros that it offers.I am currently using the GH4 for b-roll and interview purposes for outdoor industry entertainment as well as video shorts for my church.

Based on video shooting only: The GH4 has amazing image quality at 4K, lots of detail, very very sharp. Lots of Pros, that camera is almost perfect for the price. Buy it, but before that, read the following.

The biggest downside is obviously the Low Light capability. Man, at ISO 800, it's ok, but at 1600, your footage is barely usable. You don't want to go at iso 1600. This is not a low light camera.

The Sony a7s low light performance makes me rethink about my choice of product. I think i did wrong, because i'll have to shoot indoor event, soon or later.

A great overall camera should perform a lot better than the GH4 in low light, but for the price, you have a lot of Pros, including 4K video recording without having to go external. It's just not a low light camera.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I have begun creating video business cards using this camera and the Panasonic shotgun mic. I love the quality of the 4K video and the sound quality is very good too. I also love that you can grab a still from the video - great for photographing children and pets who are always moving! I also have used it for some landscape photography on my last trip to Montana and love the images! All around great camera, light weight and excellent glass. The LCD is beautiful. The battery lasts twice as long as any I've used before.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I was super excited to get this camera for the 4K video feature but once I filmed with the camera, I was impressed by the resolution. I just feel that if I'm filming in 4K then I want to film on a camera that has better clarity. As for use as a photo camera, it's great! I did a photoshoot with it and really liked it.

My verdict: I'm returning it and paying a little extra to get the Canon 5D Mark iii.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I purchased this camera to replace my Canon 7D. I mostly shoot video but I do shoot a decent amount of photos as well.

I found that the GH4 is a beast when it comes to video - it blows my 7D out of the water in overall image quality and dynamic range. On the other hand, I'm finding it difficult to capture captivating photos with this camera. It may be that I'm still getting the hang of this new camera system (only been using it regularly for about a month) but I still prefer to shoot photos using my 7D.

That being said, I got this camera for its video capabilities and it hasn't disappointed. The 4K clips look very nice with the right piciture profile settings and the 96 FPS slomo is surprisngly slower than it sounds. When shooting at 200MB/S FHD the color is very pleasing to the eye and ultimately was what I always wanted to get (but never quite achieved) out of my 7D - I can't wait to try out the 10-bit capabilities when I get a chance!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I primarily shoot video but needed a budget camera that would allow for interchangeable lenses. The GH4 is everything you'd want for low-budget and event shooting. With the proper lenses and rigging, the high quality is nearly indistinguishable from a dedicated video camera, prosumer or otherwise. The flexibility and improvements on this model after having relied on the GH2 for so many years are greatly appreciated.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I purchased this camera about last week and shot a short film with it right away! It is definitely a beast! First things first:Pros:I still have my beloved hacked GH2 but this little guy is definitely a game changer. The low light capability is not bad at all! Numerous shots that I took in the movie was after sunset when it was getting dark extremely fast! The camera held its own against the darkness, and was resolving information better than my naked eye could! And as far as A7s goes, I rarely use a camera without lighting for film making! Secondly:The depth of field of this camera is definitely not a concern at all. I managed to get extremely shallow depth of field with creamy and completely blurry background with my SLRmagic 25mm lens, and the 14mm Panny lens. Even at DCI Cinema 4K!Third:The long battery life allowed me to shoot 2 days straight on only two batteries!Fourthly:Some people complain about the video-look! I assure you that, that has to do with the person standing behind the camera, not the camera itself. Since I did a timed film making competition (Colchester 60hr Film) I didn't have time to color grade my footage, however, the results were astonishing right out of the camera.Fifth:"Cine like D" Plus "Master Pedestal" at +15, adds a ridiculous amount of dynamic range to this camera! Far better than cameras 3 or 4 times its price!6th:The fast menu changes and usability is very very welcoming! I never read the user manual, but after owning the GH2 and watching a 5 minute youtube video or two, I was up and running and making films. (your experiences may vary ;) )7th:The slow motion feature is flipping fantastic for certain shots in your movies! Don't go and abuse the thing and shoot an entire movie in slow mo and then try and color correct it harshly, but if you need a message to come across in slow mo, then definitely use it, for it is a great tool!8th:Price, yes it's a little expensive, but internal 4K recording, all the professional and useful tricks that you'd find in expensive cameras, and resolving good image quality makes this camera a unique puppy!CONS:OK so here is the only CON I can think about of this sexy beast: Beware, that the camera will automatically disable itself after a brief period of time. When you press record button, or any other button, it will wake the camera up! There was only one shot that I missed because of this Un-Disable-able feature. Where I pushed record, the actor went through actions and I missed the shot because when I stopped recording, thats when the camera actually started recording.Bottom line though: I was torn between this camera, sony A7s, and the new samsung NX1. But I do not regret purchasing this camera one bit. And I believe it was love at first record.

Paired with a Leica 25mm 1.4 lens this camera is a beast!

Obviously the best MFT camera for video, but this beats up on many full frame cameras as well. Left Canon completely for this setup. I was originally worried about going from full frame to MFT I would lose some of that amazing dof, but I couldn't have been more wrong. Amazing camera!!!

I'm the lead producer at a digital agency and we produced more than 100 videos last year on dslr's and REDs.This review is based on two major flaws that will keep me from using this camera as my day-to-day travel camera or integrating it into our digital workflow. I wanted to love it. I pre-ordered it and have used it extensively. If you are someone that keeps their camera in a glass bubble -- then my review is not applicable. However, if you use your camera outside the studio then be warned.First, the weather sealing is non-existent. In just a minor drizzle, water got into the SD card slot, battery compartment (which is open to the sensor area), and the bottom connectors. We've been using Canon's and Nikon's for years and this is at the bottom of the list. Even the consumer grade ($1k range) Canon's are better sealed. After a couple months of use, the main sensor corroded and in Panasonic's terms the camera is a "total loss." This means they offer to sell you a refurbished unit for barely any less then you can buy a new one on B&H.Second, the panasonic service department in Texas is a huge waste of your time. After sending it to them I had to call them every day for multiple weeks just to find out what the status was. They provide you with a dedicated customer service rep -- who will ask for all your contact numbers and then quickly start call screening you to delay the process. I found the only way to access my rep was to start calling in and asking for supervisors -- I eventually landed with the operations manager and he sped up the process. After two months -- I was able to order a replacement camera for their pitiful discount.

Image quality is amazing, shooting in 4k changes the way we structure our productions for the better.
Also, we used to shoot primarily on the GH3 and this camera is so similar in size and operation that we didn't have to change anything else in our workflow!

I have had no problems and have been shooting Lumix since the GH2 and they have always been such solid cameras with no major problems for operation. It is reliable, and I can trust that.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

This is a great camera. I purchased this camera for the 4K video. I was using a 5D3 for video and stills. I sold my 5D after using the GH4. The upgrade in video quality is stellar. There is no doubt that the stills from the 5D are amazing. But I have been getting great results from the GH4 with stills.

I purchased the Lumix 7-14 for landscape shots. They are stunning!

Don't let the claim of low-light performance scare you from purchasing this camera. Turn off iDynamic, boots the master pedestal to +15 and you will be happy at 800 - 1600 iso.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):
