The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a true hybrid camera designed for both professional photo and video use. It features a 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor and a 4-CPU Venus Engine, capable of capturing high-resolution JPEG and RAW stills, as well as UHD 4K 3840x2160 30p/24p and cinematic DCI 4K 4096x2160 video at 24p. Like its predecessor, the GH4 features a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body, while offering increased resolution on both the OLED monitor and electronic viewfinder. It also features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC technology, in-camera creative controls, and a high-speed 49-point autofocus in both photo and video mode.

The GH4 delivers video quality surpassing many professional video cameras. Video can be recorded in a variety of formats, from efficient AVCHD and AVCHD Progressive, to 200 Mbps All-Intra and 100 Mbps IPB MOV and MP4 formats. And because the GH4 is a global camera, the system frequency can be switched between 59.94 Hz (23.98 Hz) and 50 Hz, yielding a variety of recording options including 23.98p, 25p, 29.97p, 50p, and 59.94p. The system can also be switched to 24 Hz to capture true 24p in HD and 4K resolutions.

Video and photos are recorded to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. For high bit-rate 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps formats, SDHC/SDXC UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3) cards are supported and recommended. Video recorded to SD cards is 4:2:0 8-bit. Real-time 4:2:2 8-bit and 4:2:2 10-bit video can also be sent to an external monitor or recorder with an optional micro HDMI cable. Additional video features include focus peaking, time code support, and cine-like gamma options. For unique expressions, VBR (Variable Frame Rate), time lapse, and stop motion animation videos can be recording internally without the need for additional post-production processing. The GH4 comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, battery charger with AC cable, body cap, hot shoe cover, USB cable, shoulder strap, and DVD with supplied software.

16.05 Megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine
The 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor delivers high-quality images with high sensitivity and quick response times. The increased signal speed readout helps to suppress the effects of rolling shutter. In conjunction with the quad-core Venus Engine image processor, you'll enjoy dramatically improved sensitivity (maximum ISO 25600), gradation performance, resolution, and color reproduction.
Micro Four Thirds System and Lens Mount
The DMC-GH4's 4/3" type sensor is large enough for shallow depth of field and yet small enough to take advantage of lighter, more compact lenses than a larger format camera would require. Plus, the short flange focal distance of the Micro Four Thirds Lens Mount makes it possible to add optional adapters (sold separately) to use a wide range of lenses, including PL-mount cinema lenses.
Dual OLED Displays - Monitor and Live View Finder
High-speed, organic LED displays are used for both the Live View Finder and the rear monitor. The 3.0" monitor features a 1,036K-dot resolution and a touchscreen interface for intuitive control, while the LVF features a 2,359K-dot resolution. These displays feature 100% coverage and a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. An Eye Sensor automatically switches between the Live View-Finder and the rear monitor, for easy shooting with both.
Magnesium Alloy, Weather Sealed Body
The DMC-GH4 features a magnesium alloy full die cast front and rear frame. A splash and dustproof design is achieved by tightly sealing the joints and control components. To further meet the demands of professional use, the shutter is rated for approximately 200,000 releases.
Wi-Fi with NFC Technology
The DMC-GH4 integrates Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC, letting you use the Panasonic Image App for remote photo and video shooting with compatible smartphones or tablets. The app also lets you embed location data to an image after shooting. If your mobile device isn't NFC compatible, you can still connect to the camera by scanning a QR code displayed on the GH4's monitor.
49-Area AF / Custom Multi AF
The newly developed AF system features 49 points, giving you more flexibility when composing shots. The Custom Multi mode extends that flexibility even more with the ability to freely select what blocks to focus out of the 49 possible focusing areas.
High-Speed Autofocus
The high-precision Contrast AF integrates DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology to achieve AF speeds of approximately 0.07 sec in AFS mode. This enables the camera to shoot bursts of 12 fps in AFS mode.
Silent Mode
The Silent mode switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic and turns off sounds, while suppressing the AD assist lamp and flash with just a single setting. This is useful when capturing photos in situations where noise and light from the camera would be a distraction to performers or people around you.
In-Camera RAW Data Development
Shoot RAW photos and process the images in-camera to create JPEG images, instead of relying on post-processing. You can adjust the color space setting (sRGB / AdobeRGB), white balance, noise reduction, sharpness, and hue. Lumix's Photo Style, Intelligent D-Range Control, and Intelligent Resolution can also be applied.
Picture Profiles
Choose from a range of Photo Styles and Creative Control modes. Photo Styles for stills or video include Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, and Custom. Contrast, sharpness, noise reduction, saturation, and hue parameters can be adjusted for each mode and even set into the camera's memory.
Professional 4K Video Recording
The DMC-GH4 brings the GH-line into the 4K age by offering both 16:9 UHD 4K 3840x2160 video at 23.98p, 24p or 29.97p, and 17:9 DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) 4K 4096x2160 videos at 24p. 4K resolutions can be recorded as MOV or MP4 files in high bitrate 100 Mbps IPB codec. When recording at 100 Mbps, you will need an SDHC/SDXC memory card capable of handling the transfer speed.

Please note: For better quality, 4K recording modes use a 1:1 pixel map of the sensor. This yields a slight crop of the sensor, resulting in approximately a full-frame crop factor of approximately 2.3x when shooting DCI 4K resolution.
Selectable System Frequency
The DMC-GH4 is a true global camera, with system frequency switchable from 59.94 Hz (23.98 Hz) and 50 Hz. You can also select 24 Hz frequency for true 24 fps cinematic video.
VFR (Variable Frame Rate)
The VFR mode enables Full HD video recording with slow/fast motion, depending on the video format and system frequency selected.

Versatile Video Recording Formats
Choose the video format that is right for each project. The DMC-GH4 is capable of ultra high bitrate video recording at 200 Mbps (All-Intra) or 100 Mbps (IPB). Available formats include MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive, and AVCHD at a variety of frame rates. In MP4 / MOV, high quality LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) sound can be recorded. All internally recorded video codecs use 4:2:0 color sampling and an 8-bit color depth.
Real-Time 4:2:2 Output with HDMI
Send 4:2:2 8-bit or 4:2:2 10-bit video in real-time to external monitors or recorders via the micro HDMI output. An optional micro HDMI cable is required. When outputting a 4:2:2 10-bit signal over HDMI, video cannot be recorded on the SDHX/SDXC memory card in the camera.
Focus Peaking
For easy focusing, the GH4 incorporates a Focus Peaking function that shows the peak of focus in MF and AF+MF modes. Users can see the peaking of focus while monitoring the subject in live view. It can be set to HIGH / LOW / OFF and the color can also be changed to blue, white or orange according to the color of the shooting scene during live view. Focus peaking is also available while remote photo/video shooting with smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi.
Luminance Level Adjustment
In addition to the standard luminance level of 16-235 and 16-255, the DMC-GH4 also offers 0-255.
Additional Video Features

I purchased this camera primarily for shooting company promotional videos. So far, it hasn't disappointed. The battery life is about twice that of my old Canon and even at 1080, the shots look great. This camera loves light. Going mirrorless was definitely the way to go. The electronic viewfinder is extremely clear and the fold-out touch screen makes focusing in manual mode extremely easy. Thoughtful details like a built-in audio levels meter, accessible mic/line in and virtual float level really emphasize the focus on the video shooter.I find that the audio pre-amps run a little hot and the mics overload frequently so having that meter is necessary. If you're shooting interviews, I'd definitely make sure the person asking the interview questions is standing behind the camera and not directly to the side. I won't be giving up my little Zoom H4N anytime soon, but the on-body audio is great as a secondary source and Premiere has no problem syncing the audio coming off this camera. The micro 4/3rds format has some great, albeit, expensive lenses available. I'm mostly shooting with the Panny Leica DG Summilux 25mm 1.4. It gives me a nice blend of DoF for exterior shots and the bokeh I want for interviews without the distortion I'd get from running the much more expensive zoom lens. Budget for a lens for this camera because they aren't inexpensive.Adapters for micro 4/3rds are extremely pricey. The converters that allow for auto-focus and aperture change using my old Canon glass are more expensive than most of the lenses I've been shooting with. Hopefully, the popularity of this format will change that. Unless you can change aperture with a ring on your lens, the more affordable adapters are pretty much useless. It may be worth it to spend the money and get an adapter if you've got a bunch of old manual lenses from the 70s and 80s hanging around or cine lenses that don't do electronic aperture. Be aware though, that he crop factor when converting from F-mount and EF/EF-S mounts to micro 4/3rds can be pretty dramatic.I like the flexibility of shooting at 4K and down-converting to 1080 if I need to.There are a few caveats, however. First off, I find that this camera doesn't do well in lower light. I have to open the lens up about 2/3rds of a stop further than I used to with my previous camera. I don't see too much grain or fuzz when I turn up the ISO, but I have noticed a little bit of grain in my exported stills when I pull them out of Premiere. The camera also has a moire problem. Some of the company uniforms and upholstery distorted when film straight on under my hair light.I also find some of the menus a little cumbersome. Setting custom White Balance seemed a little difficult. I like Canon's white-balance workflow a little better, though that may be because it's what I've been using for years. The white-balance presets don't seem as accurate as what I'm used to, either. Shooting for daylight under 56K Alzo Video bulbs gave me a little bit of the green tint that CFLs are famous for. I didn't have this problem on prior cameras at the same WB setting. I also noticed yellow and green tints in daylight when shooting outside with no lighting reinforcement. Manual WB is definitely recommended. Some users complain of slow auto-focus with this rig, but I found that the mixed mode of manual with AF is a perfect solution when I go looking for bokeh. The element that pushed me to choose this camera is really its popularity online. There are a number of video shooters who have moved to this platform and are releasing tutorials on this camera. A tool is only as valuable as your ability to use it and I like learning from others.Overall, if you're in the market for a new video camera in the DSLR or micro 4/3rds form factor, this one is the one to get.

I had this camera for two months and loved it. Until I decided to take pictures last weekend for a wedding. At dark setting, while on manual mode the flash fired even when it was at close position and emitting a terrible burning smell. I tried switching to electronic shutter and the problem goes away. But as soon I go back to mechanical shutter, the problems comes back. It's unfortunate, I am no longer eligible for exchange since it's past 30 days so I'm sending the camera back to manufacturer for service. Not very happy that I have send it for service already, I've only used it 3-4 times on shoots.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I had been looking at several DSLR-type cameras for a few months and I had the oppurtunity to shoot some sample video with 2 or 3 of them but I was unable to get my hands on the GH4. I had never used a M4/3 sensor before and I had concerns on how shallow the depth of focus would be.I was originally planning to wait until Photokina 2014 was over and all of the new cameras were announced, namely 7D mkII. But then, I watched 2 camera reviews. One by Dave Dugdale and the other by Philip Bloom. Both of which produced very in depth reviews on the GH4. I was then able to get a good visual of what the camera could do. Obviously, I was impressed. I then made the choice of not waiting on the "other cameras" to come out because of the overwhelming amount of features that the GH4 has. Some of these features will probably never be put into a prosumer level Canon, focus peaking and zebras not to mention having a cool "party trick" of internal 4K. Nikon may include some of these features but I wouldn't bet on it for a few more years. The camera from the video side of things is phenomenal. The amount of detail that you get from the 50/100/200mbs 1080p footage is outstanding. Then you look at the 4K and cinema 4K(only 24fps) footage and it's like getting glasses for the first time. All of the detail that is captured in the 4K footage is breath taking. Some of the first 4K "test footage" clips that I shot were of a series of soy bean fields that were on rolling hills. At f8 (35mm eq of f16) with the Panasonic 25mm f1.4(50mm f2.8 eq), I was able to see ants crawling on a leaf of a soy bean plant that was approximately 10ft away from the camera! That made me feel very content with my purchase. ;-DThe stills side of the camera is great as well. Although I purchased it primarily for the video capabilities, I have been very pleased with the photographs. My first outing with it as a stills camera was at my daughters birthday party 2 days after it was delivered to me. I was able to get some quality pictures with it. A family member of mine that uses full frame sensor cameras was even impressed by the stills that it produced. The auto focus was/is extremely quick. I have yet to have the GH4 "hunt" for focus. The focus with the 25mm 1.4 lens can still get very shallow (See pic). Its not as shallow as a D810/610 or 5D/6D can get but it very respectable. Again very pleased.I have not tested the low light capabilities of the GH4 yet but I DO KNOW that it is NOT the a7s. I haven't, as of yet, seen anything in the GH4's footage that has me regretting my purchase at all.It took me about an afternoon to get use to the menus and where each feature was located. Now, 2 weeks later, I can just about change the settings blind folded. The camera itself is very user friendly. The EVF is an awesome feature too. Now it doesn't matter how bright the shooting environment is, the EVF is there to save the day. For video, using the EVF gives you another point of contact with the camera that helps you stabilize the it.The battery last forever. All day shooting has finally arrived. I have, on several occasions, shot video for approximately 6+ hours WITHOUT changing the battery. This will definitely benefit the time lapse shooters as well. If they need to hike in to a remote location to shoot, it will allow them to maintain a small, compact gear bag even for an extended multiple day trip.CON:The audio from the Rode Video Mic Pro does produce some nasty digital noise. If you cut out the 14-18khz in the audio EQ in post then its tolerable but still noticeable to trained ears. I believe that Panasonic has recently found a fix and will correct the issue if you send the camera back to them for a few days (Sept 2014). For the footage/shoots that require solid audio, I only use the camera's internal audio for syncing purposes anyways so its not that big of a deal to me.If you are currently considering getting this camera, you need to order today. It has very few limitations/cons compared to the amount of features/pros that it offers.I am currently using the GH4 for b-roll and interview purposes for outdoor industry entertainment as well as video shorts for my church.

This camera pack a massive array of features, 4k internal recording being the big one.Given that it has a micro 4/3s sensor, you will get noise, but mane gable unto iso 800.I use this camera for product videos, and the image quality is breathtaking, you could shoot at 4k and edit at 1080p and you have a medium shot and a close-up.The 10bit 4:2:2 over HDMI is another world, most people don't realize how bad 8 bit really is until you compare it to 10 bit.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

Great little hybrid camera for filmmakers. Sharp Hd and 4k footages and slow motions.
Sold my Gh3 and got this camera. Love the new feature like zebra and focus peaking, cine gamma.
This is the best Dslm 4k camera in its pruce point.
          Let me write its downside:
Micro 4/3 sensor is performing weaki in lowlight, i really hope panasonic change the next Gh camera with Super35 sensor. Surely we can pay extra cash for better sensor.
Dynamic range is also not so good, it capture the image contrasty like gh3. With cine D gamma it will get a bit better but not what am expecting.
I had an Af100 and it seems like its dynamic range is better than Gh4! Not sure but i guess.

Overall this is great little camera and perform well.

The quality is impeccable and super clean and easy to function.
4K is stunning! Easy to edit with latest Adobe Premier on MBP.
1080p renders looks fantastic! Need large HD TV to appreciate detail.
Love the slow motion. Decent Bokeh with fast MFT lenses. Low light is plenty good too. 4K on an SD card = priceless. Everyone will be copying this camera soon. They are fools if they don't. Great job Panasonic!

It's the best video cam right now for this price (imo). 4K looks stunning, and down res'ing to 1080 is sharp. 96fps is really nice too. Shoot in the daylight and it looks rad.. Low light is still not great on this chip, but for bright shots this camera is a little ripper. Follow the light.

My first official foray into the DSLR world! Coming from the more old-school ENG/camcorder form factor environment, making the DSLR transition is made sweeter by the attention Panasonic payed to the videographer with the GH4 and it's predecessors the GH2&3. It has many of the features any videographer needs to shoot video professionally and the cake is iced with the stunning cinema 4K quality images. Pair it with a quality professional audio adapter/mixer/recorder and you'll have a great, versatile camera package. The only downside is the fragile micro HDMI port. Old school guys like me will hate the less than secure connection this provides. The Panasonic interface unit that provides BNC HD SDI outs and pro audio inputs is expensive and impractical for run and gun without significant investment in battery power upgrades to power the interface. The 2X crop factor of this m4/3 camera is compensated for with the amazing images and dof you can achieve with the right glass. Using the Nokton 17mm, 25mm and 42.5mm f0.95 glass achieves amazing results. Add the Panasonic 12-35mm f.2.8 G series lens for run and gun situations and Image Stabilization.Bottom line: Shoot amazing 4K images rivaling the best digital cinema cameras for under $2K! A great deal!

I have not been able to play with my camera enough. There are many functions I still need to discover and use. But what I've done with it so far has been impressive. The photos and video have both turned out good. I'm still wanting to achieve a certain quality with both so I am still working on the settings for that perfect picture. But the camera seems very sturdy and durable. Like so many others who have given this 5 stars, I can now see why.

But after getting it, I can say that the ease of use is amazing and intuitive, the picture quality is perfect, and the mobility is a big plus. Adding other lenses is easy, just pick up adapters and you can put anything you want on it. Slow motion at 96fps is a must (full HD) and this camera has it. Can't say enough how much I recommend it.

Panasonic gh4 have time lapses,4k, better colors, better sharp, so for video is much better than my 5mark3 :) so I don't have any excuses to keep my canon gear the only thin I will keep is my lens I just bought an adaptor to use all my canon lenses :).. I hope one day canon stop to care about the money and they give more quality and better options to use the equipment.

I bought this as a B-Camera for my Red Camera. While it is not a RAW video camera, the image quality coming from this camera cuts very nicely with footage shot on my RED. Great value, great portability.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

I love the depth of features and options this camera offers! Great size and feel.

                          My three critiques would be:
                          1. I would want a full 35mm equivalent sensor so it would eliminate crop factor. I know this would raise the price some, but that version would be amazing!

                          2. the swing out screen doesn't swing all the way out to be a perfect 180 deg. It rests slightly inward so if I have it mounted on a rig, I have to crain my neck slightly to view it square on.

                          3. I would like the selection wheel to be rubberized. The hard plastic just dosn't have a nice feel to it.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only):

After carefully reading about micro four thirds cameras my choice was the Lumix GH4 for its myriad of features, 4K cinema video capabilities, and a camera that helps guide you through the complexities of filming. It is primarily a film camera and it accomplishes that task beautifully. This is a camera you use and love to have.
