With the large maximum aperture, excellent background blur is possible with fast shutter speeds. The aspherical lens element makes the lens compact and corrects spherical aberrations. The image is sharp even at the edges.

Canon's 28mm f1.8 USM is a capable lens that is often relegated to a misunderstood category among most amateur users.
Professionals who use this lens do so for a very specific purpose, a purpose that this lens was designed for, namely low-light, tripod-less, image stabilization free, photography. If you find yourself requiring a lens of this nature, I would recommend it without hesitating to concede that while this optical configuration is perhaps less versatile than a more flexible zoom alternative, indoor photography, especially when this lens is married to a flash pack, will not disappoint.
Outdoor photography, one of the primary reasons for why I purchased this lens, produces (at times) haphazard results, however, most often a consequence of inappropriate use or an ill-advised desire to photograph everything at wide open f-stops. Chromatic aberrations - especially in harsh lighting conditions - will, if you prefer to make use of this lens at the aforesaid apertures, prove to be exceptionally exasperating, if not (unnecessarily) stressful. The obvious response to the aforesaid then, is to stop down this lens to a more appropriate (at the very minimum) 5.6 f-stop, in addition to, when exploiting its exceptional optical quality outdoors, making use of the appropriate lens-hood for additional control.
Accept this lens' limitations and you will be rewarded; forget to observe pragmatic considerations and you will be (unjustifiably) disappointed. Additionally, given the myriad of personal motivators and requirements, the best advice to those looking to invest in any lens, not just the Canon EF 28mm f1.8 USM, is to review what was captured by others. Observing the end results of the experience(s) of third-parties, as they are found on both obvious (and less so) websites all over the internet, is perhaps the most effective method of genuinely ascertaining whether or not a particular lens "fits" your own creative demands.

I purchased this lens as a replacement for the wide side of the Tamron 28-75, after I sold the Tamron. Not only did I want to replicate that wide focal length, I wanted something faster indoors for winter shots of my kids, but I do not need L glass for snapshots around the house.
I was very disappointed in the performance of this lens when shooting wide open. It was better at 2.2 and 2.8, but by the time I got to a reasonable level of sharpness, it was no faster than the 28mm 2.8, which sells for less than half the price of this lens.
I ended up returning this lens and getting the Canon 35mm 2.0, and I find the quality of the 35 to be much better than the 28 1.8, and it more closely approximates my 50mm 1.4.
I would not recommend this lens.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
I mostly do video work on my 7D, so I prefer prime lenses for the most part. This is a solid lens to get a normal field of view with an APC-S sensor (28mm actual x 1.5 crop = 42mm field of view).
So how has it worked so far? The focus pulling is smooth and quiet, which is great for video. There's a little drag, but that's good because it helps you get a more precise pull. If you're taking stills, rest easy knowing the autofocus is fast and accurate.
This is a fast lens at f1.8 and at a third of the cost of the L-Series 35mm f1.4 it's much better for my budget. The build quality is good. The lens has a nice heft to it without being heavy and the lens mount is made of metal.
In hindsight, I probably would have chosen a 35mm lens to get me just a bit closer to the field of view of a full frame 50mm. But this lens is close enough and it gets the job done for a good price and quality. Along with the 50mm and 85mm, this is a good choice as one of the basic lenses every videographer should own.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
This lens works really well for indoor/low light situation. It's a little soft wide open at 1.8-2.0
but starts to be tack sharp around 2.8
Fast focus and very very quiet. Very nice build quality.
This lens is for low light but not suitable for portrait as it doesn't produce nice blur background because it's actually wide angle turn into normal FL when used with crop sensor.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
I don't think I have had enough time with this 28mm, but with that being said I'm generally happy with it. For the price point, I think you will get what or more than what you expect. The lens is sharp and of course good in low light. Nothing to really complain about other than it being quite heavy for a little lens. I was contemplating this one with 24mm but I though this one being f1.8 is a no brainer! I still wish I had a wider lens but I guess that's when saving comes in for 16-35mm.;) I definitely recommend this for a starter kit or general wide angle with great aperture.

I am using this lens on my Canon Rebel and love the image width and crispness. This is my new go-to lens. It's heavier than my 'nifty fifty' due its solid craftsmanship. The only cons are the same cons any prime lens would have - the lack of zoom - but I think it's near perfect.

This lens takes a bit to get used to because the focus is so quiet, fine and quick. It has a clear, crisp picture and works well with quick changing subjects, ie. children. I am really enjoying it and will be working more and more with it in my portrait photography work.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
I am a novice photographer and needed a reasonably priced wide angle lens to use on a recent trip to Alaska. My purpose for purchasing my wide angle EF 28mm 4/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens by Canon was to try my hand at taking pictures of the aurora.
The aurora activity while we were in Alaska was very weak, however I was able to take pictures that showed the aurora, even though when looking at the skies the aurora was almost invisible to the naked eye.
This lens is very economical, but works very well. The pictures were better than what I expected to be able to achieve. As I learn more about the lens' capabilities and become more accustomed to my Canon T3, I know I will be even happier with my choice.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
It was between this and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4. The reason I went with the Canon 28mm f/1.8 was the ultra sonic motor and the fact that I can use this on a full frame sensor or a crop sensor. I plan on going full frame soon and this lens won't be obsolete like the Sigma, which only works on APS-C cropped sensors.
The UltraSonic Motor is amazing how quiet it is. This really helps with nature photography when noise from the camera may scare away your subject, very stealth.
Lastly the extra stop (1.4) in the Sigma wasn't a deal breaker since it's too soft and the focal length is too shallow to use in most situations, 1.8 is good enough, but I find myself using 2.2 or 2.8 to sharpen things up slightly without loosing that beautiful Depth of Field. The focus ring on this feels real professional and doesn't slip or have any play in it, compared to cheaper lenses.
You won't be disappointed!

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
I usually don't believe in perfect scores, but this lens met or exceeded my expectations in every way. On a 1.6x crop sensor, the 28mm focal length is very close to a classic 50mm, which handles very well for general shooting. Despite being a wider lens, barrel distortion is insignificant, and it's great for taking portraits in closed spaces. Wide open sharpness won't disappoint if used properly, and it's very sharp past f/2.8. More importantly, autofocus is lightning fast and extremely precise.Corner sharpness is not a factor on this lens until you get to full frame , where you might opt for a 24 or 35mm L Series lenses instead. That said, the corner sharpness on the 28 is still good, and it's significantly lighter and more compact than it's L Series brethren. Despite being mostly plastic, It's well built too. The focus ring feels nice, and it's the only external component that moves.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
I was between getting the 28mm f/1.8, the 35mm f/2.0 and the newer 28mm f/2.8 IS. I went to the BH store and tested all three on a 5D MK2 and finally decided on the 28mm f/1.8. I also have a 50mm f/1.4, so the 35mm f/2.0 would have been kinda reduntant, and besides, the quality of the 35mm was subpar to say the least. That left my decision between the 28mm f/1.8 and the newer f/2.8 IS. Pricewise, there isn't that much of a difference with the rebate that is going on, but I decided on the f/1.8 mainly due to the quality (the f/2.8 feels very cheaply made) and the larger aperture. I do not shoot video, and at this wide I don't see the point of having IS.All said, the 28mm f/1.8 performs great. I've had this lens for two weeks and I find myself reaching for this lens constantly. Pictures are super sharp, although the best results are found stopping it down to 2.0 or 2.2.

I bought this lens to shoot a music video, and it hasn't let me down! The price was a little steap, but it was worth it. The only downfall is some chramatic aborition when I took a long distance picture (landscape style) at a basketball game. Great in low light! This is my new favorite lens.

Comments about Canon Wide Angle EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens:
I love this lens and am glad I decided to buy it despite the few negative reviews I read. I don't see a problem with soft focus with the aperture fully open. One thing to consider is that the depth of focus when fully open is very narrow which may be why some notice slightly soft focus in their images. I use this both indoors and outdoors and have great results. I mostly shoot indoor shots of our family and when we're traveling around the world. I think the is a great normal lens on a 1.6 cropped sensor camera and a nice wide angle on a full frame sensor.
If you're considering this lens and it's in your budget then I recommend you buy it. If it's not in your budget then don't buy it.

I use this on a Canon T3i. With the T3i's crop factor, the magic lantern software tells me that it is the equivalent of 46mm... essentially making it the closest equivalent to a 50mm lens. Definitely make it one of the primes in your bag.
