The EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens from Canon is a wide-angle prime lens with a fast maximum aperture of f/1.8 enabling effective low-light imaging and shallow depth of field focus. An aspherical lens element reduces aberrations and improves image sharpness at the frame edges. The ultrasonic focus motor (USM) provides fast and quiet autofocus action, which is especially important when shooting video. Manual focus via the rubber focus ring is smooth and accurate.

Fast f/1.8 maximum aperture is effective in low light and enables shallow depth of field focusing.
An ultrasonic focus motor provides precise, smooth and silent autofocus.

I've owned this lens for a couple of years now, I've used it in a wide range of situations from street photography, in clubs under very low light to landscape photography under a relentless Australian sun. This lens can produce wonderful images, but it can also punish you with mediocre results if you are not technically proficient. I personally would not recommend shooting landscape on a bright sunny day without a lens hood and below an aperture of f5.6 with any lens and certainly not with this one you, will be sorely disappointed :)
I find that this lens is acceptably sharp in the centre at f1.8 and very sharp in the centre by f4. If you are shooting in low light it's fine at f1.8; a lot of people seem to be complaining about it being soft, well given, it's not razor sharp at this aperture, but on looking at some of my photos I see a very narrow depth of field and I think a lot of people don't realise that perfectly nailing focus is very critical with a lens like this. I'm using this lens on a Canon 5d mk2 with the ef-s focussing screen installed; the standard focussing screen on this camera can only show a depth of field equivalent to f2.8, but the ef-s screen allows me to see exactly what's going on and I can then manually tweak the focus to where I want it to be.
Speaking of focus, the lens is silent and it is very fast, I have no complaints there! I think the Bokeh is quite good, but not great; though given it's a wide angle lens, I'm quite happy with it. The build quality of the lens is pretty good, a cut above the Canon 50mm f1.4. It has a very useful depth of field scale; I often use it to pre-focus, when I'm using this lens for street photography. The manual focus is smooth and all focussing is done internally.
All in all, I find this to be a very useful lens for street, interior and low light photography; it's usable for landscape photography at f8, though the corners never really catch up to the centre in terms of resolution. So if landscape photography is your main aim, I would probably recommend you purchase the new 28mm f2.8 IS instead. As they say, different horses for different courses!

I purchased this lens as a replacement for the wide side of the Tamron 28-75, after I sold the Tamron. Not only did I want to replicate that wide focal length, I wanted something faster indoors for winter shots of my kids, but I do not need L glass for snapshots around the house.

I was very disappointed in the performance of this lens when shooting wide open. It was better at 2.2 and 2.8, but by the time I got to a reasonable level of sharpness, it was no faster than the 28mm 2.8, which sells for less than half the price of this lens.

I ended up returning this lens and getting the Canon 35mm 2.0, and I find the quality of the 35 to be much better than the 28 1.8, and it more closely approximates my 50mm 1.4.

I would not recommend this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I really needed a low-light "standard" focal length for my T4i crop sensor. This lens was not the first one I ordered, but the Sigma 30mm 1.4. It wasn't so much the 2/3 stop of light but the rave reviews online. The Sigma could not focus at all even at 6 feet so I ordered the Sigma USB dock. I was able to get about 40% of the pictures to get in focus even at f/1.8--the rest were either front or rear focused. This was on a tripod with a stationary object. I sent that one back and ordered this Canon lens. The first 10 shots I took with the same test were all in focus, no need to adjust anything with a USB dock either. The image quality is about the same as the sigma (a bit soft even in the center and significant CA wide open). It's still very usable if you are not looking at 100% crops (then just buy some L glass if you need that). At this price, I think it's definitely worth it. I didn't want to go with 35mm especially in tight quarters. The only thing I would add to this lens is image stabilization. Bokeh is a little odd at times, but still acceptable to me.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I was looking to lighten my bag, and enable myself to use my 5DII when I'm just roaming the city, running errands, heading to/from work, or going out with friends ... just have it in my shoulder bag. This hits the mark. With the extra stops, it's also great in low-light situations. I do find the colors to be crisper on my two L lenses, but after a minute or two in post-editing, and I doubt anyone could ever tell the difference.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T3i with a 1.6x crop factor, so 28mm is a normal lens for me. The 18–55mm kit zoom lens gives me all the wide-to-normal range and most of the aperture that I'd want, but it's so light, and the camera body is so heavy, that I can't use it for shooting from the waist (a street photography technique that I've employed for years), because the camera flips up and aims into the air. Also, the markings on the kit lens don't indicate where to set a true-normal focal length. (Online photos of the lens show a dot on the zoom ring, but my lens doesn't have it.) And besides, there's a certain discipline involved in shooting with a fixed focal length.

This lens is a teensy bit pricey, but having put it through its paces, I'd never part with it. Working with it is like working with my beloved old Minolta X-700, but with autofocus for when I'm shooting at very wide apertures. Everything is crisp and gorgeous, with no image or color distortion that I can see. On a recent trip out of town, I shot more than 900 frames in four days, and I'd say at least two-thirds of them were with this lens. The results, especially with a circular polarizing filter, were most satisfactory.

I have been shooting with this lens around NYC for a couple weeks now. I have been shooting friends and landscapes alike. I use a Canon, t3i/600D, so it's somewhere around 45mm with that 1.6 crop factor, making it a perfect carry-around lens.

Its ability to open to 1.8 is ideal for shooting in low light, and the photos it takes there are wonderful. In well-lit shallow depth-of-field photos, there is a good bit of fringing on blurred edges, but it doesn't bother me much (if I were a professional, maybe I'd care -- but I'd also have bought a lens that cost more than this one). The only thing it could use is IS for those low light, slow shutter situations. But at the price, I think it's unbeatable.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

I've read several reviews that this lens has problem with focus, softness, and CA. I only found the CA to be true, at least in my testing. The lens is fast and sharp, and with proper technique is even sharp at f/1.8. That is quite the accomplishment. The color issue with this lens is regrettable but at least (partially) fixable post-processing. But for the price, this is a superb lens.

I have really enjoyed this lense. I'm using it on my canon rebel t2i and am very pleased with the sharpness of the images. I wish I had the budget to get the L series lense but this one is definitely a good second best. I was also very pleased to get it a day earlier than expected. Great customer service from B&H!

Tack sharp and quick autofocus. A perfect lens for low-light, indoor shooting. Similar in body feel to my 50mm 1.4, so it makes for an easy transition between the two. I highly recommend this lens.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

This one would get 6 stars from me. This lens constantly impresses me. It's a breeze to operate, never misses a shot or distracts you, and the output is consistently pleasing for me. 1.8 gathers a ton of light and produces a hazy veil typical for very large apertures, and I really like the dreamy etherreal effect it provides (when the subject calls for this). Stop down and all you get are ultra-sharp, perfectly focused images. I shoot it on the 7D so it's a very natural field of view at 45mm equivalent. The bokeh is great, in particular it provides pleasing light circles for each point of light in your field of view when wide open. Street shooting by day, by night, portrait, this can do it all with flying colors. This lens is FANTASTIC. Also it obviously has all the advantages of primes. Last thing: I obviously debated about the f/2.8 IS newer version but chose the "old" one for its larger aperture and already great reviews. I have no regret!! The newer stabilized f/2.8 is probably fantastic too and I would consider it for video (stabilizer).

So far I really love this lens. My 50mm 1.4 is great, but I needed something that wasn't so tight during my sessions with more than 1 person. Very happy with it and the focus is crisp.

Its a nice lens to have for the wide mm and big app but the quality is soo poor at 1.8. The max I use it at is 2.0 now.

Great lens to learn more about photography. A lot more under the hood than the standard kit lens that makes for a learning curve. But isn't that what photography is all about? If you aren't interested in learning, buy a point and click. Have not experienced issues such as purple fringe or edge distortion as I have previously read about. Good solid feel.

Comments about Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens:

So I've shot a few things using this lens since I first purchases it, and so far so good. I'm using a cropped body DSLR at the moment, so what I like about this lens is that I can use it when/if I upgrade to a Full Body model. It's a semi-weighty lens for it's size, but I think it's definitely more durable than that the lenses that are just made of plastic. The bokeh with this lens is great. What I enjoy about it is the low f-stop so I can shoot video in low light settings. Because this is a wider lens, I can get less bokeh than say a 50mm with the same f-stop of 1.8, which requires less drastic focusing.
