The black Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera is a high-zoom camera that offers ease of use akin to a point-and-shot, but with the design and control of a DSLR. It features a 20.4MP 1/2.3" Exmor R CMOS sensor and a BIONZ X Image Processor for notable low light performance, as well as a 50x optical zoom Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T lens with a 100x Clear Image Zoom. A 4.3-215mm focal length with a 35mm equivalent of 24-1200mm allows this lens significant wide-angle and considerable telephoto shooting abilities. It also features a wide 2.8 aperture, which is especially useful in low-light as it allows for brighter images.

A 3" Xtra Fine 921k-dot tilting LCD monitor as well as an electronic eye-level viewfinder allow you to view and compose high-quality images. Capture full HD 1080p AVCHD video at 60p and 24p and use the optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization to compensate for camera shake in order to provide clearer images. This is especially useful in low light and when using the longer focal lengths. For sports photography and during motion-filled photo capturing moments, the HX400V features 10 frames per second continuous shooting at the full 20.4MP resolution, which ensures sharp, clear images that are less likely to be missed.

To capture a wide area all in one photo, Intelligent Sweep Panorama utilizes motion compensation while shooting panoramas in order to reduce the blur created by moving figures in the foreground. For easy uploading after a long day of shooting, a built-in Wi-Fi allows you to instantly share what you have created with your family and friends.

20.4MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor & BIONZ X Image Processor
Captures high definition images with sharp details and minimal noise, even in low light; offers fast performance and buffering speeds.
50x Optical Zoom Zeiss Lens & 100x Clear Image Zoom
A Carl Zeiss lens with 50x optical zoom capability offers a considerable expanse of reach from wide-angle to super-telephoto. This zoom range can effectively be doubled, too, using the 100x Clear Image Zoom that employs an intelligent interpolation algorithm to increase zoom magnification with minimal image quality loss.
3" Xtra Fine 921k-Dot LCD Monitor & Eye-Level Viewfinder
Still photos and videos can be clearly displayed on the 3" Xtra Fine tilting LCD monitor with 921k-dot resolution and an available histogram. Additionally, you can manually adjust the brightness level by 5 steps allowing you to compose and view your images in any lighting situation. For extra shooting stability, an electronic viewfinder is also provided for eye-level composition. It allows for magnifications of 8.1x and 16.2x and becomes useful for viewing and composing shots in extreme sunlight.
Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization with Intelligent Active Mode
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization offers compensation to reduce the blurring effects of camera movement when shooting at slower shutter speeds. This is particularly effective when shooting in low light or at longer focal lengths. Sony's Intelligent Active Mode image stabilization combines electronic and optical stabilization for less blurring while shooting videos when moving.
Full 1080p AVCHD Video Capture
You can capture full 1080p AVCHD videos with stereo sound at 60p, and 24p for a film look. SteadyShot Active Mode offers image stabilization for video that will smooth out clips shot while moving, and a dedicated video record button allows you to start shooting immediately.
Fast 10fps Continuous Burst Shooting & Lock-On AF
Ideal for sports photography, the HX400V can shoot up to 10 frames per second in full 20.4MP resolution, and has Lock-On AF, which provides the ability to focus on multiple points with subject recognition to keep your subject in sharp focus even when in motion.
Intelligent Sweep Panorama 360˚
Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode takes Sony's Sweep Panorama function to the next level with the addition of motion compensation. Even when subjects are moving in the foreground of your landscape, these cameras can detect faces and moving subjects, intelligently stitching different widths together to minimize distortion. Simply press the shutter button and sweep the camera in the desired direction and the camera continuously shoots at a high speed, then seamlessly stitches the images together with automatic position adjustment to create one stunning panoramic image. Available in wide format and up to 360° full circle.
Superior Auto
This enables the camera to select optimal settings based on scene recognition and provides crisp, beautiful results even in low-light situations.
Manual Exposure Control
Manual control of aperture, shutter speed and ISO is offered with P/A/S/M modes.
Motion Shot Video
For a unique visual effect, use the Motion Shot Video to trace subject movement on the LCD. This playback function allows you to study form and pathways of moving subjects right on your camera.
Face Detection, Tracking Focus & Smile Shutter
Face Detection allows you to take better portraits and group shots. It recognizes up to 8 faces within your image and adjusts the camera for optimal exposure of faces. Tracking Focus makes it easier to capture clear shots of moving subjects by having the focus automatically adjust while you follow the action with the camera, and Smile Shutter Technology helps you get the best shot by recognizing when is the best moment to release the shutter.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity & NFC
Wi-Fi lets you quickly upload photos and videos to social media sites through your smartphone or tablet, back them up on your network-connected computer, or view them on a wireless-enabled HDTV. When transferring images to Android smartphones or tablets, the camera also supports NFC, or Near Field Communication, providing a simple, "one touch connection" requiring you to merely touch the devices to connect.
Built-In Flash & Multi Interface Hot Shoe
A built-in manual pop-up flash offers available flash modes such as Auto, Fill-flash, Off, Slow-Sync, Advanced Flash and Rear Sync, as well as a wireless mode with optional compliant external flashes, which can also be used on the multi-interface hot shoe when you need a flash with more range.
GPS Tagged Photos & PlayMemories Camera Apps
Map your photos and videos with location data and camera direction with the GPS tag. GPS Log lets you track a photographic journey and images on a map. The GPS and PlayMemories Home software allows users to view images on a map where they can also be displayed on Google Earth. PlayMemories allows for applying creative effects or retouching images, which can then be easily uploaded to your social media account. Enjoy various Apps including Time Lapse, Smart Remote Control, and Direct Upload.
Erase and Protect Features
Protecting images can be done in various modes such as single image, selection of images, and by date, and erasing images can be done with the same modes, in addition to arranging it by folder.
4K Quality Still Images
For 4x the resolution of full HD, enjoy the beauty of 4K quality still images with an optional HDMI connection to compatible 4K TVs. The camera can also be connected via HDMI to HDTVs for full HD 1080p resolution images.

I wanted a Mega Zoom bridge camera. I looked at Nikon P600, Canon SX50 and Panasonic FZ70. I decided to buy the Sony HX400V. This camera offers more features and the image quality is better than the other cameras. Image stabilization is also excellent. I can get great hand-held photos at full 50X. I use the PROGRAM mode because i can set sharpness, saturation, contrast and other features to my liking. Battery life is good, but i recommend an extra battery and external charger. Camera has a threaded lens so you can attach 55mm filters. The menu system is very easy to use. LCD and viewfinder are also very good. Video quality AVCHD at full 1080P is great. Camera is well built. It's average size for a mega zoom. It's lightweight and feels good in the hand. I highly recommend it. See two attached photos taken hand-held at 50X zoom.

Like many, I suppose, I bought this camera for it's reach and to use when I did not want to carry a DSLR and bag full of lenses. In almost all respects, I am happy with it's performance. The one area of disappointment is it's write time. The camera displays "Processing" after virtually every shot and does this regardless of camera setting or card used. In fact, i bought the most expensive card of my life to try to improve this issue. No luck. When displaying the message, of course, the camera can't take another shot. It's truly phenomenal burst mode will bring a smile to your face but this is quickly replaced by the annoyance of waiting for the camera to catch up.
In almost all other areas the camera is a jewel. Anti-shake works well, the zoom is incredible, build quality is good and IQ is actually better than I expected. If they could only improve the write speed.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera:

Took this Camera to photograph Whooping Cranes on a boat tour out of Rockport, Texas, the 50X Zeiss lens had enough reach to get good photographs even hand held,,,yet the 24mm wide angle to 1200mm 50X gives this Camera incredible versatility from wide angle to extreme telephoto.
Even though the sensor is small if you do not blow up large prints and mostly post on the computer and social media the camera works fine. I shoot mostly in Shutter or Aperture Priority and one thing I love about this camera is the screen on the back of the Camera or the Viewfinder will lighten or darken as you rotate the thumb dial changing the shutter speed or aperture giving you the exposure you want even before post production.

I use this camera for wildlife photography the long lens was the selling point for me. I own four Sony DSLRs and six lenses , but can't afford a lens this long for them. This is a great camera with a fantastic lens. I have heard comments that the lens is slow at the long end. Look at the speed of lens and converters to get5 1200mm.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera:

Any time you buy something on the Internet, there is always a higher risk that you will be disappointed since you haven't actually handled the product. Not this time. The HX400V is a winner.

I am a hobbyist. What I love to do is shoot interesting photos and take them into Photoshop and get creative. I shoot all types of subjects, but get to pick the time and place (indoors or out). I experiment a lot with how I shoot. Having lots of shooting modes is good for me. I also like to do green-screen videos so I needed a camera that did both well. I haven't shot a lot of video yet, and will review it separately. Here is my assessment so far.

            Things I love:
            1. The display automatically switches to viewfinder when you look through same and back to the display when you look away.
            2. The auto zoom and focus work fine, but so do the manual zoom and focus when you want to use a point the camera doesn't.
            3. The stabilization at long zooms (50x) is simply not an issue. It works beautifully.
            4. The illumination with a flash is very uniform side to side as opposed to very light objects in the center and darker objects on the sides.
            5. The multi-frame shooting works well. It is great for shots like a horse jumping, kids swinging a bat, etc. This same capability is used in low light conditions to take several shots even in the single shot mode to reduce digital noise .
            6. You don't need an external flash (especially as well is the built-in one works), but I love the fact that I can mount an external flash or (stereo) microphone (my next purchase) on the camera. For videos, this is great.
            7. I like the fact that the Fn button is customizable (push to select from 12 different menu items). Most things you will use are already setup, but it's your choice.
            8. An image of the shooting mode wheel shows in the viewfinder/display so you don't have to take your eyes off the subject to change mode (aperture, shutter, etc).
            9. I haven't played with this yet, but you can save two sets of custom settings for special conditions. With all the built-in scene types (which can be selected automatically in one mode), I am not sure why you need more customization, but it is there if you need it.
            10. The wireless transfer of photos is easy – once you get it setup. Like connecting any device to your router, you must know what you are doing. Non-techies might not.
            11. I love being able to geocode photos. I travel a lot, and remembering where a shot was taken is always a challenge. Geocoding solves that problem.

            Things I love less:
            1. No camera RAW. I knew this before I bought it, but I am a Photoshop guy, and I like working with RAW images. I'll live.
            2. I wish the burst mode would run 2 seconds (or even 1.5) versus 1 (10 fps). I would just like to bracket actions a little more. What you need depends on the action you want to shoot.
            3. The display tilts up and down, which is nice, but I like to keep a quick disconnect tripod mount on my camera. When I do, the display doesn't tilt as far down. My problem, but my Canon would fold out to the side AND flip up or down (or even face forward). This is not a real handicap, but since I am complaining. :-)
            4. You cannot use the included charger to power the camera during long periods of usage. You must buy a separate charger. I like to make extended videos (30 - 45 minutes) so it would be nice not to have to change batteries. I know. Fringe case.
            5. You can only delete all pictures for the current date or all of the pictures on the camera. If you like to keep multi-day shoots on your camera, it would be nice to be able to delete any day versus just the current date. You can of course delete individual shots.
            6. The phone app is great for taking photos, but does not work with video. Since videos often require camera movement, this is not as big a drawback as it might seem.
            7. The photo management software gets the job done, but it is not as nice as Nikon's, but that is a version issue.
            8. Just a wishlist item: I wish I could record a short audio clip with each photo. Even downloaded as separate mp3 files, this would be very helpful.

This is an excellent camera; a little complicated but you will never need some of the extra features. It is very responsive and so far, the pictures look good. I am especially impressed with the 50x zoom photos ( a bird in a tree with bare branches all were in focus at ~200 ft.) The biggest negative is not supporting the RAW format, but for non-Photoshop types, this won't matter. You can still edit the jpeg photos it saves if you like. I wold recommend this camera to anyone who could afford it.

For the amount of zoom, the way this camera handles the low light is excellent.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera:

I love this camera, the ease of use, the many options for shooting, the Ziess lens, everything right down to the weight of it in my hand is perfect. The picture clarity is excellent. The only negative comment I can come up with is the fact that there is a bit of lag time between taking a photo and the camera being ready to take the next one. In spite of that, I recommend it highly.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera:

I have been using this camera quite a bit over the last few weeks. I have gotten good to great results in most shooting situations. Two areas where it fell a bit short: Shooting a stage performance. I was about 20-25 feet from the stage. Flash did not illuminate enough to capture sharp image without motion blur as performers moved about the stage. 2nd, as noted in another review, the write speed is slow for a camera in this price range so it can be a bit maddening waiting for the camera to be ready for a follow up shot.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera:

My experience in bridging the gap between a basic point and shoot (works but limited utility—just use your phone for those shots) and a more advanced DSLR or high end mirrorless cameras is fraught with compromise. The HX400V seems to be a good compromise if super zoom is really important to you. This camera and those in its class from Canon and Nikon zoom to ~1200mm. This feature has the ability to bring things up close and personal. However to achieve this great zoom feature in a small compact design means you are sacrificing on image quality. You sacrifice a some at wide to normal angel of view shots, and a lot when zooming all the way out. Anecdotal observation with my spouse as the test case indicate that this is an acceptable compromise. The HX400 has some great built in features and while still a compromise you cannot beat the Zeiss lens compared to other manufactures' super zoom bridge cameras. If you want a bridge camera with superior image quality, and don't really care if you have the super zoom capability nothing I have seen, read about our used is better than the Sony RX10. Albeit at a [$]+/- premium compared to the HX400. In summary, good value for a super zoom point and shoot bridge camera.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera:

I have been carrying the 'smaller' Sony point and shoot HD camera for a couple years now and have gotten some fantastice shots. I looking forward to a more 'powerful and responsive' camera this trip and already know the 'pics will be good'. Since what I love to do most is 'photography', you can never have too much. I spent many years with SLR cameras and love the ease of use of these 'point and shoot'. You can't go wrong.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera:

I bought this camera shortly before leaving on a long trip to take zoom pictures at several sporting events. Unfortunately the camera did not come with any instructions for use so it was very very difficult to override all the many many automatic features and it was aggravating to use this thing. This camera is made to rule the photographer, not the other way around; it is very complicated to figure out what settings are in play at any given moment and the camera keeps telling you that you can't do something that you had no intention of doing in the first place. The zoom is great, but it takes about 2 seconds to focus on something, which is too long for a sporting event. Also, if you take a burst sequence, it takes 15 seconds to process before allowing you to take another shot, that also is way too long for sports. This camera also has significant problems with lighting and color recognition, there are many setting for white balance but none of them truly represent what is before you. A yellow jersey comes out white or blue or greenish, anything but the yellow you see before you. The camera also has problems with stabilizing an image, about 50% of the images are blurred while using the automatic settings. The other thing I dislike is that when shooting in low light areas, like a dark city street, the camera automatically adjusts to make the image brighter than it is, so you lose the drama of the dark lighting. YOu will get some great zoom pics, but about 85% of the pictures I took out of 4,000 are useless. It was really maddening to shoot with this camera, and I've never had a problem before with the Pentax, Sony, Canon film and DSLRs I have owned that are now obsolete. But I will probably go back to using them instead. The good things about this camera are the zoom is great (if you are shooting something stationary), the memory card holds 1,000s of shots, and the battery is long lasting, even in cold weather. I would not recommend this camera to anyone who does not have weeks to spare to learn how it works; to take it, as I did, on a vacation expecting to learn how to use it in a few hours is not possible. It is a camera that has a mind of its own and refuses to let you do what you want. A disappointing purchase for me.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera:

I've been taking photos for 50 years and was looking for a camera to replace my old DSLR that had become obsolete. I'm wishing I stayed with what I had as I am very sorry that I bought this camera a day before leaving on a very long vacation which included three major sporting events because it is extremely difficult to use unless you want to be at the mercy of all its myriad automatic features which cannot be shut off or overridden (and there are dozens of these features running and ruining your show). The camera was highly recommended by staff at B&H. Unfortunately there was no adequate instruction information included with the camera so I was left winging it while on the trip. The most aggravating thing about this camera is its insistence to tell YOU what picture you want to take instead of letting YOU take what you want to take. It's like walking an untrained dog with a mind of its own. The zoom is great on this camera but it is not really good for sporting events; it takes about two seconds for the lens to focus on something, and by then the shot is gone, and after taking a picture there is another three second lag before you can shoot again so you have to hope you are catching the most significant moment when you take a shot because you don't get another chance soon. Most of the pictures are blurred as a result of the bad focusing. If you use the rapid burst 10 shots/second feature, the lag to process is nearly 15 seconds before you can shoot again. This makes it especially frustrating to shoot live action. It may be fine for taking a still bird sitting on a branch somewhere. The other problem I found is that when using it to take dimly lit photos of a street scene or interior setting the camera overrides what you see and makes the scene brighter, essentially ruining what you wanted in your photograph. If you set the camera to Manual, the camera repeatedly tells you the things you will not be able to do before you take every shot, it just won't shut up! An aggravating purchase. It will take some wonderful pictures, but I'd say that happens maybe 5% of the time. Out of 3,000 photos I got some nice shots but 1,000s of absolutely horrible pictures that I'd be ashamed to show to anyone that the camera "took" in its wisdom. On the plus side, it is easy to carry, the memory card holds a lot of pics and the battery lasts a very long time even in cold temperatures. This is not a camera I would recommend to anyone who wants to control their own images or who does not have weeks of time to learn how to manipulate the device. I'm hoping I can find an instruction manual online! Buyer beware.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera:

Over the years, I have owned dozens of cameras, from simple point and shoots to expensive and heavy slr's and dslr's. In consideration of the foregoing, I can unequivocally say that the HX400V is a great multi-use camera. It is light weight, has a great zoom, and takes very sharp pictures from 24mm to 1200mm and 1200mm to 2400mm is good also.

Now, of course, I am taking the photos in south Florida where the intense sun helps in the photo taking process, so I don't know how the camera will work in northern states. In south Florida, it is great!

I am used to using a dslr and was concerned with how fast the shutter worked to focus and take a photo. It is fast and mostly accurate. At the longest zoom it is a little harder to focus sometimes, but mostly really good. There is a bit of a lag between photos on which apparently the speed of the SD card doesn't seem to help, but this is something I will have to get used to. The photos are quite amazing, even at long zooms, shooting birds through grubby windows. I am thrilled and looking forward to using this camera on my travels and everyday life so that I don't have to carry then heavy dslr.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera:

Has most functions of DSLR in a small size without the lense changing. It was a good choice for the task of taking pictures at a football game where my Sony 70-400mm zoom would not be allowed. The focus worked very well for both stills and video. The menu allows for great flexibility and control of stills and video.

It is a great camera with many many features. I really only have two complaints. 1. The location of the NFC is in a bad location next to the strap holder. I have a very difficult time getting my phone in the right place to connect. To bad they didn't switch it around where the WI-FI is. 2. The Sony phone support in my opinion is terrible. They do not know the product and several times gave me wrong information. The telephone lines wherever they are very bad also.

I bought this camera for quick pictures of deer etc. in my fields. I have used 100ED & 80ED refractors "prime focus" with a Pentax 6MP DSLR camera in the past, slow to setup etc.I really like this Sony camera, just wish I bought it when it was $ off instead of $. I had no trouble with lens cover!
