The black Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera is a versatile and advanced mirrorless camera featuring a 24.3MP APS-C-sized Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor to produce high-resolution still images and full HD movies with marked low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 25600. Beyond notable imaging traits, the image processor also lends itself to continuous shooting up to 11 fps and an intelligent Fast Hybrid AF system that uses both phase- and contrast-detection methods to quickly and accurately acquire focus.

For live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation, both a large rear monitor and detailed electronic viewfinder are available. The 3.0" 921k-dot XtraFine LCD screen features a tilting design to facilitate easier use from both high and low angles and also incorporates WhiteMagic technology for easier viewing in bright conditions. The 0.39" 1,440k-dot Tru-Finder OLED EVF offers 100% frame coverage and a refined optical design to provide a natural viewing perspective and magnification. The body design of the a6000 also houses a configurable user interface, built around several customizable buttons and two control dials, for efficient and intuitive access to frequently used camera settings. Additionally, a Multi Interface shoe is available for attaching external flashes, continuous lights, or microphones.

Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, with support for NFC-enabled devices, is also integrated into the a6000 to support remote camera control and image sharing to linked mobile devices.

Included with the camera body is a Sony E-mount 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Retractable Zoom Lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-75mm. This range of perspectives is well-suited to everyday shooting and is further enhanced through the inclusion of Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for minimizing the appearance of camera shake. Power Zoom technology allows for electronic control over the zoom position and the inclusion of one extra-low dispersion element and four aspherical elements helps to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range as well as contribute to high overall sharpness.

24.3MP Exmor APS HD CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor
The 24.3MP APS-C-sized Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor work together to produce high resolution, well-detailed imagery with minimal noise and notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 25600. The sensor utilizes a gapless on-chip lens design, which fills the gaps between neighboring pixels with optimized lenses that match the angle of incidence to increase light gathering ability and produce edge-to-edge sharpness and quality. The processor also contributes to providing a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including Fast Hybrid AF, a top continuous shooting rate of 11 fps, and full HD 1080i/p video recording in multiple frame rates.
Fast Hybrid AF System
The Fast Hybrid AF system utilizes both a 179-point phase-detection system and 25-point contrast-detection system to achieve precise focus in as little as 0.06 sec. Utilizing a Spatial Object Detection algorithm, this fast focusing system first employs the phase-detection AF points to quickly bring the subject into focus and then uses the contrast-detection AF points, with wide AF coverage, to fine-tune the sharpness for ensured accuracy. Beyond supporting single shot modes, this system also provides AF tracking when shooting up to 11 fps in continuous high mode and functions seamlessly when recording full HD movies.

For further refinement, a series of distinct AF modes can be selected from depending on the subject. Eye AF is a detail-oriented focusing function that can prioritize a subject's pupil and dedicate focusing performance on that for sharply-rendered portraits; Lock-on AF is a dedicated focusing method for use with moving subjects and adjusts the target frame size as the subject moves throughout the image frame; AF area settings allow you to prioritize specific regions within the frame for increased accuracy; and AF-A (Automatic AF), AF-S (Single-shot AF), AF-C (Continuous AF), DMF (Direct Manual Focus), and Manual Focus modes can also be chosen.
Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1080i/p video recording is supported at both 60 and 24 fps frame rates to produce high resolution movies with a smooth, cinematic look. Full HD videos are recorded using the high-quality AVCHD codec, while 1440 x 1080 and 640 x 480 formats are also supported in the Internet-friendly MP4 format.

Benefitting advanced video applications, clean HDMI output is available for recording uncompressed video via an optional external recorder. Additionally, a Zebra function is available, in 70 to 100+ levels, during recording for easier detection of exposure clipping to prevent overexposure.
Body Design
Revolving around a compact and lightweight profile, the a6000 incorporates both an electronic viewfinder and a large rear LCD monitor. The Tru-Finder 0.39" 1,440k-dot OLED EVF features a refined optical system that integrates four double-sided aspherical elements to provide 100% frame coverage and a wide 33° viewing angle for clear edge-to-edge viewing. The electronic viewfinder's design offers a true live view image, which is able to simulate the appearance of the finalized image prior to shooting and also avails focusing aids, such as MF Assist and the Peaking function. The 3.0" 921k-dot rear Xtra Fine monitor is a larger alternative, suitable for making accurate compositions, reviewing imagery, and navigating the menu system. It features a tilting design that can tilt upward approximately 90° or downward 45° to benefit working from high and low angles. Additionally, WhiteMagic technology works to increase the overall brightness of the screen to better support use in bright or sunlit conditions.

Complementing the overall handling of the a6000 is a customizable user interface that includes an Fn function button and seven other buttons that can be adjusted depending upon user preferences and assigned to one of 47 different functions. Furthermore, two top dials offer an intuitive means for selecting crucial camera settings in a deft manner. A built-in pop-up flash, featuring a guide number of 19.7' at ISO 100, is available for working in difficult lighting conditions and a Multi Interface Shoe is also available for attaching additional on-camera accessories, such as flashes, video lights, and microphones.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables the a6000 to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.

Additionally, PlayMemories Camera Apps are also supported via the built-in Wi-Fi connection, and allow you to personalize the camera's features depending on specific shooting styles. Apps are available to suit creating portraits, detailed close-ups, sports, time lapse, motion shot, and other specific types of imagery.

Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Retractable Zoom Lens
The included black 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Retractable Zoom Lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 24-75mm, covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives to suit working in a wide variety of situations. It features Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to help minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps to greatly benefit working in low-light conditions and with greater zoom magnifications. One extra-low dispersion element and four aspherical elements are integrated into the optical construction to help reduce chromatic aberrations as well as increase clarity, sharpness, and contrast and the Power Zoom electronically-driven zoom mechanism brings greater efficiency to controlling the zoom position of the lens.
Other Camera Features
  • The Sony E-mount affords compatibility with an extensive number of lenses and lens adapters.
  • An advanced 1200-zone evaluative exposure metering sensor delivers consistent and accurate results using multi-segment, center-weighted, or spot metering modes.
  • Auto Object Framing is an intelligent shooting mode that can automatically analyze the scene and subjects within it and determine an aesthetically-pleasing composition. There are many things about this camera that caused gut wrenching disappointment in me when I first started taking pictures with it. I am writing this review to let you know it is a GREAT CAMERA, once you get past the handicap. The handicap – Sony software engineers have loaded it with picture fiddling software, that causes unfortunate outcomes like fine mud smear background effect, lack of precision in pictures and unreal colour. If you are experiencing difficulty loving your new a6000, stop using the auto and auto plus settings. Put it on P, and go through all the menus and turn off any Sony ingenuity you don't actively and knowingly want. After I did that I got STUNNING PICTURES, and could see the value in the extra megapixels. The camera itself is a great camera. Even the heavily compromised design of the kit 16-50mm lens can give excellent pictures.Don't give up, and you will love the pictures you get.Other thoughts – it isn't physically small, like youtube reviews had me thinking. Its eye viewfinder is good enough quality to be enjoyable to use. Lens adapters fitted well, and I have used three manual film camera lenses on it with good results – a Nikon 50mm prime, a Sigma PK mount zoom, and a Canon zoom/ macro. Battery life: turn the LCD onto bright sunlight mode all the time, and buy a spare battery – what good is specified battery life if it is measured with the camera in an unusable state?I hope you buy one and get as much fun out of it as I am getting out of mine.

I love the size and the quality photos of this camera. Along these lines it was exactly what I was looking for. I would like to see a better lens selection, which seems to be one of the issues with Sony. The other issue is the software apps which are tedious and sometimes difficult to set up. For instance, in order to upgrade one app on the camera, I am being required to upgrade the firmware, but unfortunately it is not compatible with my latest version of Mac OS and I don't seem to have an alternative. So, I'm stuck not being able to use this smart remote control any longer. It's very frustrating and the user experience is very poor figuring out the software situation. Sony should stick to cameras, get some help with lenses and avoid software completely --- IMHO.

I did a lot of research on the camera and I'm glad I did. I was looking for a qualty travel size camera with a viewfinder, larger sensor, metal body and a cool appearance. I'm an artist and need the amera for a variety of things, from copy work to personal artistic shots. I loved the full frame Sony's but upon review, it was overkill for my needs and this camera seems to have everything the much more expensive Sonys do with a considearable diffrence in price. It's cool, I'm happy. One small problem, it is hard to extract the SD card. Not enough room to grab it.

My first mirrorless camera and I haven't been disappointed. Great in low light. I purchased this camera to take on trips and photograph family events, rather than lug around my heavy DSLR. The only downfall I've found is it's hard for me to remove the memory card (and I don't have large hands). Buy an extra battery or 2 as it does go through them. I plan on purchasing an external battery charger as well so I don't have to rely on charging the battery in the camera.

Comments about Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

I am a professional photographer who uses both Canon and Nikon cameras and bodies, but wanted a camera that I could toss into my jacket pocket because we try to have a camera on us at all times. The Canon G series used to fill this need, however after seeing the Sony a6000, I decided to switch. I have no regrets. The camera with the 16mm-50mm lens is sufficient for most of my needs, and I can always add a zoom either via Sony of with the use of an adaptor ring. Another reviewer mentioned turning off all of the Sony software and that is also my experience if I want spectacular photos from this camera. This camera has loads of advanced features, and is small/lightweight, has great video with many ports to attach a mic and small monitor/tablet to view liveshots, and is wireless. While mine needed a firmware update that should have been as easy as loading the file to a card and then to the camera, it requires going through a computer and is somewhat cumbersome compared to Nikon. The apps that are offered are somewhat difficult to see on a small LCD, so I don't use them. Picture transfer via wireless is somewhat slow and it's far easier to just take the card out, pop it in a reader at the computer and upload to the cloud, or take it into a phone/tablet via a card reader/USB and edit from there. One camera can not be all things to a photog, but this one does come close and the feature set at this price-point is mindblowingly great. If you are looking for the solid feel of a pro camera with a battery grip, you won't find that here, but the camera itself is quite solid, and there is a grip available as well as many accessories like a cover for the flash hotshoe (mine didn't come with one and I had to order it). I find myself playing around with this camera far more than my "pro" models, and getting great results, however I have not tried the speedlight. Gary Fong has many good tutorials on his website that inform the user as to the full potential of this and other Sony models that are worth looking at. I'm pleased with my purchase and would highly recommend this camera to a pro. Pick up an extra battery or two and a wall charger!!

Honestly the most amazing camera I have ever owned - and I have owned a few.
Solid build, easy to use and brilliant, sharp images - even with the kit lens.
                I'm VERY, VERY happy.

I gave my point-and-shoot to my grandson and bought a new, better camera. I wanted low-light capabilities for family pictures, and also a light-weight and pocketable camera for taking with me (especially backpacking). This puppy weighs in at one pound (I carry about 22 pounds, including water). I also looked at the Fujifilm E-X1, which is a beautiful camera - great pictures, and better low-light than the Sony a6000. But the weight and bulk tipped the balance (so to speak) for me. Both cameras have the same size sensor, but the Fujifilm kit lens is better.
I could not ask for a more considerate, polite, lenient, and patient business than B and H. I learned a lot, from their website, from chats, from google searches, from user manuals, and from being able to try the cameras in my home. I never could have done it by going to a local camera store.

One of the best in this price range. It may be missing some things (touch screen, good battery life, etc.) but with everything considered (including high ISO, extremely fast auto-focus, 24MP, 11 fps), constitutes a great product. If picture quality is important to you in this price range and form factor, it's HIGHLY recommended.

Comments about Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

I'm an amateur photographer that also has a passion for the outdoors. I have been using Nikon SLRs for years (from the FM2 film camera to the D70 and D90). When I'm out skiing I carry a P&S (Panasonic DMC-ZS30) and when I'm out hiking it's either my P&S or my D90. When I go birding it's my D90 & my Nikon 80-400 zoom. I decide which camera to take based on how long the hike and the weather. I was looking for a potential upgrade to the D90 and I wanted something light and powerful but higher end than a P&S. I've only been using the a6000 for a couple of weeks but I'm very impressed. The shutter speed and low light capabilities are superior to my D90. I have not done a detailed comparison of image quality but I have not had any complaints. There are a lot of bells and whistle on this camera that are similar to some P&S add-ons that are welcome on a higher-end camera. Being able to setup wifi to my android phone and use my phone as a remote shutter where I can see the shot and with the kit 16-50mm lens with power zoom I can frame the shot remotely. It's great for getting that trail selfie or a stealth photo (without running cables). I like that I can (with an adapter) re-use my exiting Nikon glass (unfortunately only in manual mode) with some limitations. The Peak Level really helps with manual focusing on my Nikon lenses. I mounted my Nikon 80-400 zoom and went out to my local birding spot. I need a little more practice and a moving bird would be impossible but a blue heron fishing or bald eagle sitting in a tree are still fair game. The equivalent Sony lens is $ and requires a $ adapter, so using the Nikon adapter is nice. I find native Sony lenses to be a little confusing as they seem to mix e-mount & a-mount lenses (you can interchange but need an adapter). I'm a little disappointed in the electronic viewfinder but I'm getting use to it and use it when I'm taking more serious photos. The video quality is outstanding (my daughter's gymnastic meet). I also purchased the 55-210 (4.5-6.3) as I got a great package price on it. It may not be the greatest quality of glass but it's not bad either. It makes a great small package when I go hiking and snowshoeing. I still have a lot to learn about it and I'm looking forward to using it more. I'll have to take it and my D90 out for some comparison shots both using the same lenses and then Nikon to Sony. I can't comment on battery life yet as using all the gimmicks and menus takes more battery power. Once I settle into a routine it should be better.

Comments about Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

This is one of those rare items that are a great value and that live up to the expectations. Great size, super-light and simply a great camera to shoot with. The 16-50mm lens is ok, not great, but ok. Using it with other Sony lenses opens up a wealth of possibilities though and the great auto focus is a plus.

I also used with a 50mm nikon G lens (with a Fotodiox adapter) and the results are equally great by taking advantage of the focus peaking.

                              Would definitely recommend.

Only negative I have found, but not tested yet is a rumor that the hot shoe on the black version has trouble making connections for some third-party flashes.

Being able to see what you're going to get on the viewfinder is worth every penny of the cost of this camera.

Comments about Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Black):

I am an hobbyist photographer focusing on landscape, macro and architecture. The Sony mirrorless A6000 is a great on the go camera, which complements my DSLR. Great in low light, easy to use and lightweight. I am looking forward to taking many great photos with this camera.

Great camera. Has same or more features then most aps-c DSLR cameras at half the size. Great for traveling since its a fraction of the weight of a traditional dslr.
