The black Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera is a versatile and advanced mirrorless camera featuring a 24.3MP APS-C-sized Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor to produce high-resolution still images and full HD movies with marked low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 25600. Beyond notable imaging traits, the image processor also lends itself to continuous shooting up to 11 fps and an intelligent Fast Hybrid AF system that uses both phase- and contrast-detection methods to quickly and accurately acquire focus.

For live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation, both a large rear monitor and detailed electronic viewfinder are available. The 3.0" 921k-dot XtraFine LCD screen features a tilting design to facilitate easier use from both high and low angles and also incorporates WhiteMagic technology for easier viewing in bright conditions. The 0.39" 1,440k-dot Tru-Finder OLED EVF offers 100% frame coverage and a refined optical design to provide a natural viewing perspective and magnification. The body design of the a6000 also houses a configurable user interface, built around several customizable buttons and two control dials, for efficient and intuitive access to frequently used camera settings. Additionally, a Multi Interface shoe is available for attaching external flashes, continuous lights, or microphones.

Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, with support for NFC-enabled devices, is also integrated into the a6000 to support remote camera control and image sharing to linked mobile devices.

24.3MP Exmor APS HD CMOS Sensor and BIONZ X Image Processor
The 24.3MP APS-C-sized Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor work together to produce high resolution, well-detailed imagery with minimal noise and notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 25600. The sensor utilizes a gapless on-chip lens design, which fills the gaps between neighboring pixels with optimized lenses that match the angle of incidence to increase light gathering ability and produce edge-to-edge sharpness and quality. The processor also contributes to providing a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including Fast Hybrid AF, a top continuous shooting rate of 11 fps, and full HD 1080i/p video recording in multiple frame rates.
Fast Hybrid AF System
The Fast Hybrid AF system utilizes both a 179-point phase-detection system and 25-point contrast-detection system to achieve precise focus in as little as 0.06 sec. Utilizing a Spatial Object Detection algorithm, this fast focusing system first employs the phase-detection AF points to quickly bring the subject into focus and then uses the contrast-detection AF points, with wide AF coverage, to fine-tune the sharpness for ensured accuracy. Beyond supporting single shot modes, this system also provides AF tracking when shooting up to 11 fps in continuous high mode and functions seamlessly when recording full HD movies.

For further refinement, a series of distinct AF modes can be selected from depending on the subject. Eye AF is a detail-oriented focusing function that can prioritize a subject's pupil and dedicate focusing performance on that for sharply-rendered portraits; Lock-on AF is a dedicated focusing method for use with moving subjects and adjusts the target frame size as the subject moves throughout the image frame; AF area settings allow you to prioritize specific regions within the frame for increased accuracy; and AF-A (Automatic AF), AF-S (Single-shot AF), AF-C (Continuous AF), DMF (Direct Manual Focus), and Manual Focus modes can also be chosen.
Full HD Video Recording
Full HD 1080i/p video recording is supported at both 60 and 24 fps frame rates to produce high resolution movies with a smooth, cinematic look. Full HD videos are recorded using the high-quality AVCHD codec, while 1440 x 1080 and 640 x 480 formats are also supported in the Internet-friendly MP4 format.

Benefitting advanced video applications, clean HDMI output is available for recording uncompressed video via an optional external recorder. Additionally, a Zebra function is available, in 70 to 100+ levels, during recording for easier detection of exposure clipping to prevent overexposure.
Body Design
Revolving around a compact and lightweight profile, the a6000 incorporates both an electronic viewfinder and a large rear LCD monitor. The Tru-Finder 0.39" 1,440k-dot OLED EVF features a refined optical system that integrates four double-sided aspherical elements to provide 100% frame coverage and a wide 33° viewing angle for clear edge-to-edge viewing. The electronic viewfinder's design offers a true live view image, which is able to simulate the appearance of the finalized image prior to shooting and also avails focusing aids, such as MF Assist and the Peaking function. The 3.0" 921k-dot rear Xtra Fine monitor is a larger alternative, suitable for making accurate compositions, reviewing imagery, and navigating the menu system. It features a tilting design that can tilt upward approximately 90° or downward 45° to benefit working from high and low angles. Additionally, WhiteMagic technology works to increase the overall brightness of the screen to better support use in bright or sunlit conditions.

Complementing the overall handling of the a6000 is a customizable user interface that includes an Fn function button and seven other buttons that can be adjusted depending upon user preferences and assigned to one of 47 different functions. Furthermore, two top dials offer an intuitive means for selecting crucial camera settings in a deft manner. A built-in pop-up flash, featuring a guide number of 19.7' at ISO 100, is available for working in difficult lighting conditions and a Multi Interface Shoe is also available for attaching additional on-camera accessories, such as flashes, video lights, and microphones.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables the a6000 to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.

Additionally, PlayMemories Camera Apps are also supported via the built-in Wi-Fi connection, and allow you to personalize the camera's features depending on specific shooting styles. Apps are available to suit creating portraits, detailed close-ups, sports, time lapse, motion shot, and other specific types of imagery.
Other Camera Features
  • The Sony E-mount affords compatibility with an extensive number of lenses and lens adapters.
  • An advanced 1200-zone evaluative exposure metering sensor delivers consistent and accurate results using multi-segment, center-weighted, or spot metering modes.
  • Auto Object Framing is an intelligent shooting mode that can automatically analyze the scene and subjects within it and determine an aesthetically-pleasing composition. The subsequent imagery will be cropped according to subject matter, resulting in a well-balanced composition that utilizes Face Detection and Tracking Focus to ensure high image quality and sharpness.
  • Clear Image Zoom can be used to magnify the center of scenes by 2x to effectively extend the reach of any focal length lens. This digital zoom technology uses an intelligent interpolation process to minimize the amount of image degradation in order to produce realistic, high-quality images.
  • Picture Effect modes allow you to apply creative settings and emphasize certain facets of individual images for a richer, more aesthetic picture quality. Posterization (Color/B&W), Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color (R/G/B/Y), High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft High-Key, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-Tone Monochrome, Miniature, Watercolor, and Illustration modes are available.
  • The Photo Creativity feature provides quick access to Picture Effects as well as dedicated controls for adjusting Background Defocus, Brightness, Color, and Vividness. Additionally, these effects can be combined for nearly limitless adjustment options.
  • Superior Auto mode is an intelligent automated setting that can quickly identify the current shooting environment and adjust crucial camera settings to deliver optimized results. This mode also utilizes Auto HDR and Hand-held Twilight modes, which employ image compositing techniques to better handle difficult lighting conditions.
  • Anti-Motion Blur automatically corrects for subject movement in order to deliver clean, sharp imagery in low-light conditions. This is accomplished by recording six sequential frames and compositing portions of each image to ensure overall sharpness.
  • Hand-held Twilight Mode automatically composites details from six sequentially-recorded images in order to attain higher overall image sharpness when working in low-light conditions.
  • Multi Frame NR records consecutive images at a reduced ISO sensitivity and then composites them into a single image to realize higher effective sensitivity with minimal image noise.
  • Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) works to improve images featuring backlit subjects or scenes with high contrast where details can be lost in the shadows or highlights. This mode can be controlled automatically or fine-tuned using five settings.
  • Auto HDR automatically records three sequential frames of an image and composites them into a single frame to realize greater shadow and highlight detail with an extended range of mid-tones.
  • Creative Style settings provide control over how the camera processes images based on six different predetermined styles: Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, and B&W. Within these settings, contrast, saturation, and sharpness can also be adjusted depending on personal preference.
  • In-camera creation of 4K slide shows is possible for rich playback to ultra high definition televisions. An HDMI port is incorporated into the camera's design, too, to enable direct connection to HDTVs.
  • TRILUMINOS Color support is afforded by the a6000 to produce rich, natural colors when imagery is viewed on a TRILUMINOS Display.
  • Convenient USB charging allows you to charge the included lithium-ion battery in-camera via USB connection from either an AC outlet or PC source.

I've had the Sony a6000 for about 2 weeks, before this, I used a NEX-6 for about a year. Big difference will be the menu and I think it's easier to use. There's a lot of menu but you'll mostly use only a few things all the time. I upgraded from NEX-6 to a6000 because of the 24 mg sensor vs 16mg. I like to crop crop out the parts of the picture that don't tell the story. This is giving me less grain than the Nex-6 when I crop, but there is still grain in darker areas using iso 3200. But I can manage with Topaz plug-in. I am amazed that I can use Auto iso and that is adjustable, you can change the range of iso you want to shoot at which is really great. But, if you can use a tripod and keep iso low, it helps a lot. Focusing is supposed to be faster but I still see it struggle in low light. Still not as fast as a full size DSLR, but you don't need to be fast with landscapes. There are a lot of features I still have to explore. Using a 18-105 G lens and that is a great lens, but better than the 16-50mm kit, but it is bigger. On the street, the kit lens would be less conspicuous. The lens does take some getting use to. The zoom is slower, I need two twists instead of one to get from 18 to 105mm. I'm ready to order an adapter for canon lenses.

First off when I went to the support website everytime I clicked on download it would return to the same page, So I don't have the software or firmware updrades, and the manuel was a short version instruction manuel of 48 pages. I found the Sony English website had a larger 209 page manuel un available on Sony USA.

I like the camera, but it didn't come with a shoe cover that I thought was tacky. The complexity of options, and lack of in depth descriptions of their utilization has me still experimenting rather than shooting productively.

In short, great camera (so far) and poor support!

Comments about Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera Body (Black):

I now use this and the Nex-6. I miss the horizon level function in the viewfinder on the a6000, but a small price to pay, I guess (though I wish they'd have kept it, even at a higher price for the camera) for the improvements in other regards. The downgrade in resolution of the EVF is made up for by the quality of the image and the utter usabilty, even in assisted manual focus mode (DMF).

All in all, I'm very happy to use both cameras, and I appreciate the somewhat greater resolution and higher quality of the sensor in the a6000.

Headed out to test my new a6000 with 24-70 f4 Z lens. I just sold my TWO Canon 6D's and ONE 70D, along with the lenses. I've replaced them with the a6000 and TWO a7s bodies. I couldn't be happier!

Canon and Nikon has lost my business and Sony has a new fanboy.

While I'm still getting to know how the camera performs, I decided to buy the A6000 rather than the A7 because I primarily wanted a fast auto-focus for photographing animals at my animal shelter. I'm getting some amazing photos and the cost of the A6000 saved me quite a bit of money that I can now spend on homeless animals. Light and easy to carry, I am so glad I purchased this Sony model.

Purchased this and the Zeiss 16-70 f4 for a trip to the Holy Land. The reviews on low-light performance sold me and I was not disappointed. Not sure if as good as my Canon 6D with the 24-105 but pretty darn close and a lot lighter to lug around. The only downside and not a really fair comparison is the the full-frame 6D allows for some serious cropping and still have a usable image. Very impressed with low-light video! Yes you need extra batteries but small price to pay to keep such a small form factor while traveling.

Comments about Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera Body (Black):

I am not a professional but like to take photos and want them to be reasonably good. This camera is light weight and thus easy for me, an older person, to carry. And so I am more likely to do so. Although they, too, are lightweight, It takes better pictures than a cell phone or tablet and has the ability to manually adjust all parameters. It can take rapid pictures, panoramic pictures and automatically adjusted pictures.

The only negative is that the battery life is not as good as my Canon 7D. But it has not been an issue yet.

This camera is so light and compact compared to my DSLR that I now pick it up first. It takes great photos, but I would like a greater lens selection. Also, Sony provides essentially no documentation with the camera. Since it is a complex device it takes some time to become familiar with the may functions.

Comments about Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera Body (Black):

It has been amazing for street portraits and action (the 11fps and autofocus is pretty freakin' awesome). I've been using the 35mm f1.8 for a bit and it is pretty spectacular what you can get out of this little camera. Unless you are doing serious studio work where you need full frame, there isn't anything this can't do - and you won't look like a tool toting around a big DSLR.

I shoot a lot of videos and gave it a go recently to see how it would fare on some outdoor short comedy sketches - the video quality is pretty darn decent, autofocus worked great (while filming a group a four actors standing in a circle it only lost focus once) but! apparently it doesn't like the SoCal heat because it told me a few times that it was too hot and needed to cool down. I've never had this happen on a camera before; it was pretty hot but only shot maybe 20-25 min of total footage. Needless to say, don't use this on any paid jobs; it won't go over well if you equipment is overheating after a few minutes.

Also, as is the common knock with this cam, the LCD is absolute garbage in anything but a dark room. The EVF is actually pretty awesome despite what others might say. So, LCD = Terrible, EVF = 7/10.

If you've played with a mirrorless camera already, especially one of the Sony ones, then nothing here will surprise you. It's the same as the other Alpha cameras, only everything is 3x better/faster/sharper! While not revolutionary, this is a big evolutionary jump that gets several steps closer to bridging to the gap with consumer-grade DSLR's, in half the size and at half the price.

There's been many raving reviews already so I'll keep it short. Basically, you get a lot for the money! Nicely designed camera, nice fit in hand as long as your hands aren't HUGE, good EVF, easy to control after initial setup, fast AF, and great image quality. Its been called the best bang-for-the-buck in the mirrorless segment and I have to agree.

Personally the only thing I wish it had is a touchscreen for selecting focus point. It was really handy on my Sony 5R.

Comments about Alpha a6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera Body (Black):

I bought this after years of point & shoots - I did a portrait project at work with a co-worker's canon sl1 with a great sigma prime and was hooked. I chose the a6000 for a number of reasons:

•great specs (sensor size, continuous drive, image/video quality)
•size/weight/build quality (am I comfortable carrying it? am I deathly afraid of a little ding to the body?)
•ease of use (do i love using it? was it easy to pick up, find settings, get shooting?)
•room to grow (am i going to want a better/different body in six months?)

the lens selection for e-mount isn't super robust, but there are a number of prime lenses that appealed to me, and I like that there are many vintage lenses that will adapt to e-mount. I ended up with the Sony 50mm/1.8 OSS and I've been happily shooting ever since (this particular deal from B&H made the purchase very easy for me). I don't think the smaller collection of lenses is real negative for the system as there is almost certainly a lens available to suit anyone's needs/wants, and a whole range of adapters.

There are a lot of features which I haven't dug into yet, but I love shooting with the a6000 and so far I've been filling my external drive with great images, indoors and outdoors. Like any new system there are new menus and control layouts to learn, but this has not been a hindrance as things tend to make sense.

The video specs met my requirements and so far the quality is what I'd expect from the lens/body combo I'm using. There is no included in put for external recorders which may be a grumble for some but does not effect my use cases for video with the a6000. It's a light body so a tripod or steadicam-style grip can be very helpful.

the 50m lens does make for a unique focal length (effectively 75mm, a bit zoomed), but takes nothing but gorgeous photos. for the price it would be very very hard to beat, even if the length takes some getting used to. I've gotten so many pictures that are real "wow" shots, up close and at a great distance (clearly picking out objects with manual focus is easy).

The lack of a dedicated switch to flip from auto to manual focus is a design quirk, but setting up the function buttons on the body is a fine workaround, and over time this has not been a huge hindrance. auto-focus is very fast and extremely quiet (i've only heard the lens working away in extraordinarily quiet conditions). this is also a bigger lens, so it's not quite pocketable, but all in all the a6000+50mm is quite portable and easy to use on the move.

Simply awesome camera. I upgraded from an NEX-6 (which is not too shabby either) and I could not be happier.First: IQ. I am using the Zeiss 16-70mm lens and the photos are terrific. The details and colors are stunning.I love the customization of the function keys, makes operation faster without having to go through the Menu system, which is actually very logical and easy to navigate. All in all: better that my Nikon D5300 at half the weight. BTW, Sony does not provide a hot-shoe cover, but I bought on e on[*] for a buck.
