Initially, I was tempted to send the X5 back.
The interface & firmware updates were intimidating to me. The fact the battery has to be changed by technicians & that other reviews seem to indicate difficulty getting service from fiio also was discouraging.
But beyond these criticisms, I decided to just jump in and load some test files for a listen.
          I was hooked.
Other reviews both professional & amateur will do a better job of describing with audiophile terminology what the X5 is doing. All I know is the result--this player sings. The smoothness, spacing, detail is beyond words. Details I never knew existed are emerging in my collection across all genres. The only analogy that comes to mind to compare my former big-name portable is junk food versus a gourmet dining experience.
As to the details of the interface & the firmware updates, these are now becoming second nature in addition to adding depth & interest to the listening experience. Now that I know what the X5 can do, I want to learn more about how the device works--and discovering these mysteries is becoming a joy.
If you're considering the X5, have at least some aptitude for software & audio equipment, and can reasonbly afford this, I wouldn't hesitate. Other high-end players start at double the cost. Just remember to allow for the cost of micro SD cards which will add to the overall budget.

It is a big and clunky Portable Music Player able to play lossless and HR formats. It does what is supposed to do and it does it well (haven't tried it as DAC yet). Updating firmware is easy enough. But the interface is way too clunky and in this day and age the rotating click wheel and small screen are archaic.

Comments about Fiio X5 Portable High Resolution Music Player and DAC:

For those of us who understand the limitations of MP3 music compression and appreciate the improvement using other methods (such as FLAC) to store our music, this player does an excellent job of playing back our tunes. Now, it isn't perfect, not by a long shot, but it's nicely built and sounds really good. I use it only as a music player with its own built-in amplifier, so I can't address its capabilities as a stand-alone DAC, but I'm sure it would do fine. There are some downsides though: no internal storage, only uses (2) micro-SD cards, the display screen is tiny with a small font, the user guide is a joke, and there are limitations in playback options. You can build a playlist, but it's rather difficult. You can easily update the firmware, which is probably the first thing you should do (older versions are buggy). However, battery life appears to be pretty good, it recharges quickly, and as I said earlier, it does appear to be well made and the aluminum case gives it feeling of quality - although it is a bit heavy. I'd buy this again in a heartbeat.

Comments about Fiio X5 Portable High Resolution Music Player and DAC:

i love this player. I won't go into the features of teh device, as you can find them in the product description. I will only give my impressions. The first thing i noticed immediately after opening the outer box is the presentation of the unit. it is delivered in a really sharp looking box. inside the box there was the player, a usb card reader, coaxial audio adaptor, silicon protective cover, an usb otg cable, and some screen protectors. The unit ships with a screen protector already installed, which i originally thought was missing, but soon found that the screen protector is so expertly attached, it is nearly unnoticeable. Upon first handling of the player, my first impression is that the build quality is unmatched by any other mp3 player/ipod i have ever held. It feels heavy, in a good way; solid and well built. the body of the unit is seamless and sleek, and you can definitely tell the unit is built to last. the buttons feel satisfying and have an obvious click feel when pressed, enough to tell you are pressing them, but not too hard. The scroll wheel, to my suprise, actually rotates. I was expecting touch based stationary wheel, but this one moves, giving a nice slight detent clicky feel when it is rotated. The last thing to note with the initial opening is that the unit ships needing to be charged, which takes about 4 hours on a 2 amp usb charger.Software:One thing that sets this unit apart from virtually any other unit i have used is that there is continuing firmware updates that increase the features and overall improves the device, and that you must manually install them. This is a unique experience. Firmware updates are downloaded from the Fiio website. while the company and the webpage are based in China, the english page is very well written. If i didn't know it was based in another language, i would have never been able to tell. On the site, there is download links for the firmware files, as well as a pdf file user manual, which goes more in depth than the included quick start guide. The manual seems to be updated to match firmware updates as they are released. Firmware updates are required to be loaded on a micro sd card, than uploaded to the player through one of its card slots. The first real complaint with the player is the playlist setup. Playlists are required to be in a .m3u format, and must be created by the user. at first i was at a loss as to how to create the playlist files, but quickly found that my computer's media player (vlc) can quickly create the playlist files for me.Playback and audio quality:I'll go out and say that i am no audiophile. i will say however that i listen to music a lot. I DJ as a hobby/part time job, so picking tracks out and memorizing them is a big part of my time, and i will say that this is by far the best sounding music source i have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Also, the massive battery means i can listen to my large DJ headphones for several hours a day for days on a charge. my little mp3 player i am upgrading from could power them for maybe a few hours before dying.

Comments about Fiio X5 Portable High Resolution Music Player and DAC:

I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO MUSIC FOR YEARS MOSTLY IN THE MP3 FORMAT, AND ENJOYING EVERY MINUTE OF IT. NEVER DID I KNOW THAT A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF MUSIC EXISTED UNTIL I STARTED READING ABOUT HIGH RESOLUTION MUSIC. THE MORE I READ, THE MORE I HEARD ABOUT FIIO'S X5 PORTABLE HIGH RESOLUTION MUSIC PLAYER. AND THE MORE I READ THE MORE EXCITED I BECAME ABOUT OBTAINING ONE. I WAS ABLE TO GET SOME SONGS IN THE FLAC FORMAT AND LISTENED TO THEM ON A INTERNET PLAYER; AND THE SOUND WAS AMAZING!! HOWEVER, I WAS ALWAYS TIED TO THE COMPUTER. SO I JUSTIFIED THE EXPENSE OF GETTING THE X5; AND AM SO GLAD THAT I DID! I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED LISTENING TO MUSIC, BUT I WASN'T AWARE OF WHAT I WAS MISSING LISTENING TO MP3's.I AM THRILLED WITH THE 10-BAND EQUALIZER. I AM THRILLED WITH THE FACT THAT I CAN ALWAYS ADD MORE MEMORY USING MICROSD MEMORY CARDS. MY PREVIOUS MP3 PLAYER WAS LIMITED TO 160G. EVEN WITH ONLY 2 CARD SLOTS ON THE X5, WITH 2 OF THE 128G CARDS I'VE GOT MUCH MORE MEMORY, AND OF COURSE IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH I CAN ALWAYS BUY ADDITIONAL CARDS. SO THE MEMORY IS INFINITE! THE ONLY CONS I'VE ENCOUNTERED IS HOW TO PROPERLY STORE FILES WHERE ALL THE ALBUM AND ARTIST'S NAMES ARE SHOWING ON THE SCREEN. MORE THAN LIKELY THIS IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT I HAVE HAD MY X5 FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AND HAVE YET LEARNED TO DO THIS PROPERLY. I WILL LEARN HOW TO EDIT THIS INFO. THE ALBUM COVERS ARE DISPLAYED BRILLIANTLY WITH GREAT COLOUR. I AM USING HEADPHONES WITH A 5Hz - 30,000Hz FREQUENCY RANGE.THE X5,ALONG THE THESE HEADPHONES HAS MADE THIS NEW AUDIOPHILE EXTREMELY HAPPY. EVEN MY OLD MP3'S SOULD MUCH BETTER. IF YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT ACTUALLY LISTENING TO MUSIC THE WAY THE ARTISTS INTENDED, THEN TAKE THE PLUNGE - YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

The x5 arrived yesterday, i charged it whole night, and this morning the charge light turned from red to green, meaning it was fully charged. Then i updated the firmware, it was smooth and successful. I copied about 40g flac files. I tried to manually update the media library as it is required, it got frozen. I forced it to shut off and restarted it as it was suggested on the website, re-update the medial library, failed again. I did four times, all got frozen, but frozen at different number of songs. I check their website, there is a special FAQ for this problem, I followed the step, still got frozen. when click the music icon, it says "no music found", but if i go to the folder, and open it, i can see some music file there, and i can play them.i finally decide to return it. Sad, i spend a lot of time reading reviews of this X5 player.

Really wonderful! The screen could be a little bigger, but, compared to the amount of pleasure I get, is nothing.

I use this product to listen to music instead of Apple product due to the better sounds. I listen to all sorts of genre but mostly vocals and Jazz.

The FIIO X5 also support most of the hi-res format that is currently available. The sounds and details you can get from the FIIO player are outstanding. It also support external memory cards so adding capacity is not an issue.
On the downside, the player is not as slick as say an iPod or iPhone. You can't compete with Apple for ease of use, stability or intuitive interface. The SW needs another upgrade beyond R2.0 to make it more users friendly. The shuffle option doesn't do a very good job of shuffling all songs. You can also lock the unit up by skipping a string of songs. The lock button is so sensitive that if you are not careful, you can accidentally unlocking it. The current SW does not support playlist so that is also a downside. Bluetooth is not available.

Overall, I value the sound a tad more than. I've purchase this in hopes that future SW will eliminate the crashes and enhance the usability.

I'm using the X5 sitting in the back yard on a nice warm evening wearing my HD650's and the X5 drive's them nicely! So glad to be done with MP3's and the lousy compressed music! Also use it through the aux port in the car and it makes the stock stereo system in the Chevy sound so much better. Converted all my CD's to Flac and have some nice high res music I got from online along with a few DSD files. I can hear the difference in quality even with my old guy hearing! :-)

This sounds great. It's simple enough for anyone to use.My music never sounded so good. You'll need to update your headphones to keep up with the quality of sound output. I upgraded to Beats and it went from truely amazing to OMG!!!

The only issue I encountered was the need to instantly update the firmwere. In doing that I had an issue where the X5 refused to charge. It kept saying the Battery has exhaused. After of 2 days in the charger nothing changed. Pushing the reset button on top fixed that flaw and it's been working fine ever since.

Incredible sound and easy to use. I still can't believe the sound with my B&W P3 headphones. It will even drive my Sennheiser 600s. Truly audiophile quality. Also, the accessories are very useful, e.g., the microSD card reader.
