Enhanced Sound
Enjoy steaming music with built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth & AirPlay. This 7.2-channel receiver delivers up to 165-watts of power and is complimented by a large transformer and capacitors. Featuring 4K resolution pass-through and upscaling, high-res audio compatibility, multiple high-definition inputs and support for 2 separate powered zones, this receiver can create an immersive sound stage for your music, Blu-ray movies, games and more.
Built for Sound
Borrowing construction and circuitry design cues from Sony's ES line, this receiver has a rigid chassis. This structure includes a high capacity power transformer, custom heat sink, and other specially selected audio-grade components. For audio purists, Pure Direct mode preserves signal clarity and detail by switching off unnecessary signal processing circuitry to provide the cleanest possible signal path with minimized electronic interference.
2nd Zone Connectivity and Control
Easily expand your Audio/Video experience beyond the living room with flexible 2nd zone connectivity and control. Featuring a dedicated 2nd zone HDMI output, IR repeater, and both amplified and line-level audio connectivity, all audio/video sources (including network services, Bluetooth-connected devices and USB) connected to the STR-DN1050 can be independently controlled and output from the Main Zone to a second zone.
Wi-Fi Built-In
Wirelessly connect to your home network and use the integrated DLNA support to access music stored on: your computer, network storage device, or even your smartphone. Via built-in music service support, you can access and enjoy music streaming services such as Pandora, Spotify, Music Unlimited, and Tunein.
Bluetooth Connectivity
The STR-DN1050 receiver streams music from your smartphone or tablet. Bluetooth streaming can also wake the receiver from standby mode. Built-in AAC and aptX codec support avoids signal quality loss when streaming music.
Well Connected
Enjoy versatile HD connectivity with six HDMI inputs (up to 4K capable). Two onboard analog component inputs provide connectivity to legacy devices (1080/60i capable). Via MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link), easily connect a smartphone and enjoy video clips, music, and more on your connected TV. A front-mounted USB input even allows for easy connectivity and charging of compatible devices.
HDMI Pass-Through
HDMI pass-through functionality allows all connected HDMI devices, including native 4K video content, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D movies, video games and other content to conveniently pass-through to your compatible television or projector.
HD Digital Cinema Sound
Enjoy enhanced home cinema sound via proprietary High-Definition measurement and DSP sound technology. Front Height mode enables vocal height and 3D effects for improved effects positioning and added depth.
Advanced On-Screen Display
Via an advanced on-screen user interface, the STR-DN1050 affords comprehensive system control, settings adjustment, input selection, and the like with seamless visual confirmation on your TV screen.

The Sony STR-DN1050 allows native 4K video content pass through to 4K capable televisions and projectors, and even up-scales high definition movies and TV shows to 4K quality.
HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC)
With ARC, TV audio signal can be sent back to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your TV.
Sound Optimizer
Sound Optimizer delivers optimized sound effect reproduction while maintaining the intended sound stage at high or low volume levels.

I bought this receiver for my parents along with a 5.1 speaker package. Setup was straight forward, though my Dad said not much documentation was included in the box. Sony had additional docs online for this system which were OK.

The wire connections on the rear of the system are close together, so I recommend getting banana plugs to make wiring easier. At first I connected the wires directly, requiring some patience and then I ordered the banana plugs and the plugs were a much nicer solution - very easy.

I wasn't at my parents place long but I tried to run through most of the features. Sound quality was good. The GUI menu is fairly user friendly once you get the system connected to the TV with HDMI. I tested the following capabilities:
      USB connected iPod touch,
NFC(Near field comm) assisted bluetooth pairing,
      Bluetooth streaming with android phones,
Apple airplay from ITunes on a macbook and ITunes running on Windows 8,
      Bluray connection via HDMI,
Streaming audio and video from amazon prime from a macbook using HDMI to either the video 1 or video 2 port,
      FM radio tuner,
and even Sony's Songpal app(free) on Android smartphone(I think available on apple as well) which allows a smartphone to act as a remote and allows internet radio streaming.

      All these features worked well.

NFC worked but be aware that you need to touch NFC_enabled smartphone to the "N" label right about the tuner buttons on the left side of the receiver front panel.

Airplay streaming was nice ... I just needed to get the system connected to the home wifi network and itunes was able to discover the receiver without issue. I did have one experience where I switched the unit from itunes to another input(maybe bluray) and itunes couldnt connect but the situation was resolved by restarting itunes. This only happened one time and all other times it worked flawlessly.

I think to get the TV working properly I had to poke around in some of the menus and set some settings. I'm not sure if I did it correctly because I expected to be able to select the "TV" input on the receiver and just work, but sometimes I would have to switch from HDMI 1 input (wired to the receiver) back to the "TV" input on the TV. In other words selecting HDMI 1 on the TV controller would present the receiver's graphical user interface on the TV ALL the time (as I expect), while selecting "TV" on the receiver would display the receiver's GUI on the TV SOME of the time vs. seeing and hearing TV programming SOME of the time(not as I expect). The result is you sometimes have to use two controllers (tv and receiver) to select the desired inputs/outputs which might be a little confusing for my parents but still manageable. This may be my configuration mistake.

Setting up the FM tuner's presets was a little confusing but persistence will pay off as the menu is not that complicated.

So overall the build and sound quality seemed high. The features are many, probably too many features for my parents; they are likely to forget/never use some of them. User-friendliness is not where it should be but I think it is good as far as AV receivers go ... the onscreen GUI is visually clean and intuitive for most options, with general descriptions of each setting, though there are "expert" options that will be confusing to most everyone... I didn't even mess with those and I assume most people will do the same. The controller is reasonably nice and usable. The alternative is control via smartphone using the SongPal app which provides network radio streaming and a simplified user interface(does not provide access to all settings). It is highly rated on Google Play Store and seems to be robust and easy to use.

I'll mention two last random tidbits:
I connected the subwoofer with an RCA cable left-channel to left-channel. That is in the limited docs somewhere(or maybe in sony's supplemental how-to doc found online), but it is not necessary to connect both left and right for the subwoofer.

In lieu of posting a link to the supplemental sony doc, just google "sony 1050 help guide".

Many positives as listed features suggest. However, a couple of items should be highlighted:1) Prominent advertising for Spotify streaming support; but it seems to be unsupported in music services. (Pandora works just fine) Others in online forums are having similar experience2) Documentation is frustrating. No manual. You can download or find manual online, but even that is limited in its usefulness3) Sony technical support has been useless to resolve Spotify question. Phone support, chat, and email support all result in dead-ends without any real attempt to resolve the issue. I WANT to give this product good review. I'm happy with its many other features. But the user experience in dealing with tech support, documentation, and lack of the advertised Spotify cause 3 start review. I will revise this review if any progress with Sony tech support should occur.

Comments about Sony STR-DN1050 7.2-Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver:

I have the sony 1050 receiver hooked up to two video outputs (plasma & projector). I'm using four audio and video inputs (2 directv receivers, blu/ray, and a home media computer). Everything connected easily with HDMI. Took some tinkering with the HDMI settings and input setttings to get everything to work, but really enjoy the results. Had 20 people watching the Super Bowl and everything sounded great, lots of compliments. Most things were very intuitive, except for setting up the FM radio channels. I like that when watching TV without surround sound, I can still use the HDMI switching in standby mode.

Comments about Sony STR-DN1050 7.2-Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver:

I bought this receiver for my Energy Classic 5.1 Speakers and I couldn't be happier with either one. After doing a ton of research I went with the CNET recommendations and picked this receiver up. The setup is so easy, I love how simple the remote is, and how many options(HDMI, Bluetooth, USB, Ethernet, WiFi) you have to get content from. Connecting to the reciver over Bluetooth couldn't be easier. I highly recommend this receiver!

This is a great amplifier that gives you a full range of modern features with a beautiful full color menu. People who report problems with this amplifier are the same people who use poorly constructed HDMI cables. I only use BlueRigger HDMI cables since they're the ones officially recommended by Sony engineers.

I am very happy with the sony avr. I was a Denon fan for many years, but it jusy didnt seem to pump the power it claimed to have, 125 wpc. The 95 wpc in this unit cranks and on screen volume indicator is totally a must have. Wish it had an apple OIS app i could use.

Comments about Sony STR-DN1050 7.2-Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver:
