Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

I use this product a primary recording for my Sony NEX EA50 and Sony HVR Z7U camcorders. I will also use it with an associate's Canon 5D Mark III. In tests and an a shoot it performed as expected. I'm using Sandisk Extreme Pro 240 GB drives. My EA50 will start and stop it via HDMI Timecode, but I have to use the touch screen start/stop with my Z7U. The screen is fairly bright, brighter than the original Ninja and Samurai. I like the peaking, scopes and other indicators. The touch screen is a bit insensitive, requiring exact targeting before a function will activate. Initially the drive caddies were a bit difficult to remove, but got easier with several insertions and removals.

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

The screen resolution could be better, but the blade is a perfect size. let's me see my image better than the 3.2" lcd on the camera. i have to admit that the image from the camera versus the less compressed image from the ninja is pretty much identical. don't expect the image to look spectacular because you attach this your DSLR. I have read that the only noticeable different can be seen with green screen work. I own a c100 and this extends the picture quality to that of a c300. However, on wedding shoots, i prefer having the long record time vice slight better image quality so I use it with my 5D and not the c100. Make sure to buy a audio cable to hook up to the 5D or else you won't have reference sound. Also, the audio will be a few frames off. you will need to adjust the settings in the ninja.

This is a great little box to add into your bag if you want to record video from a DSLR. Allows you to record HD Video uncompressed and ready for editing. that fact it is an excellent monitor with touch screen and 2 extra tracks of audio inputs makes it a gem. So far a month and a half of loving this recorder.

I use this with my Nikon D4S to record clean 1080p directly from the HDMI out port. It breaks the 29 minute barrier and allows you to record continuous amazing footage directly to the Blade's drive. The only downside is it is one more item in the kit to have attached to the camera. Since you get the clean 1080p, though, that's insignificant in the equation. If you are looking to get the highest quality video from your DSLR, this is the product that will allow you to do it. Very intuitive interface. Dismount the drive from the Blade and use the included caddy, you have the files on your laptop or editing machine in a snap.

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

When I connected the Ninja Blade to my Canon 5D Mark III, I was literally blown away by the quality of the ProRes 422HQ ten bit recorded to a 500 GB hard drive inserted into the Ninja. It is important to understand that only the video signal is exported via the HDMI connection on the camera. Therefore you must bring your audio directly into the ninja either from an external source or from the monitor output of the camera. Then adjust the Ninja to compensate for a 7 frame lag in the video. I am shooting a documentary onboard a large steamship and the results are stunning. One caution however, carry an extra and well made HCMI cable. The first one I used failed after only one hour of use. I purchased an upgraded cable and it works perfectly.

This device serves a fantastic field monitor, the best part that is only half of what it does. The fact that it saves you HOURS converting footage to a edit friendly format is also a HUGE advantage. just plug into your computer and you are ready to edit. This is probably the best piece of gear I purchased for filming.

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

I use this to record to an SSD hard drive and avoid the AVCHD compression. Menu is easy to navigate, it comes with a sled/dock for the SSD drive which fits the case so you do not have to remove the drive from the case (comes with two drive cases) which involves the 4 small screws. The sled has a USB 3 plug, and a secondary plug if that power is not enough, and is pretty straightforward to just hook into your USB 3 port. I did not have to use the secondary one on my iMac, and it just appears on the desktop like a drive should. Monitor is very clear. Pretty straightforward set up. I only have two comments. One is the dock was defective but the company replaced it immediately which solved the problem. They reported issues with my type of SSD drive, which is an OWC 450 GB drive, but the replacement dock solved the problem, which was that the SSD drive when attached to the computer kept dismounting and mounting, in about 15 second intervals or so rendering use impossible. Not to mention possible and likely damage to the drive had I let it continue. Two, this unit gets very, very hot, and I have a worry how that will affect the SSD drive. Hot enough that it is uncomfortably hot to handle, and it happens in a matter of 10 minutes of use. This is said to be normal in the literature, and from an email that went along with the request of a replacement dock. I was told that my OWC 450GB SSD drive may be the reason for the excessive heat, but it gets hot just sitting there not recording. Otherwise, a fantastic addition to your workflow. The 450GB drive holds just over 6 hrs of 1080P video in Apple Pro Res medium setting.Oh, and one more comment, the SSD drive (not supplied, by the way) is easy to insert, but you have to have strong fingers to pull it out which I cannot do without a lot of pain. I just used a strip of gaffer tape down one side, folded the end to make a tab, and voila...problem solved. And this unit comes with a large variety of accessories and a very nice case. An added perk is that I can use my Sony NP type batteries with it just fine. Battery life seems reasonable, I have not used it enough to estimate exactly how long the battery will last. It has two battery slots so it will roll over to the other if you exhaust the first one.

This recorder would be absolutely perfect if only it supported locking HDMI cables. But other than that is is great.

The Atomos Ninja Blade is a perfect combo for my Canon C100 & 5D Mark III without adding too much more bulk to my gear. It let's me record broadcast quality and provides a nice monitor as well. Now I can take my work to another level. Thanks again B&H!

The video from Ninja Blade 5" is wonderful, very smooth, it makes my old camcorder a new tool, my D800 becomes more useful for video production and my old 7D a wonderful camera . Ninja Blade 5" takes video production to another level beyond my imagination.

Records straight to Pro_Res codec so I no longer have to worry about transcoding footage or the annoying AVCHD codec on the c100. Also shoots 10-bit color giving me more color space to work with in post.

The touch screen can be a bit annoying at times trying to get it to recognize your selection.

I love this thing. It is great. The image on the monitor is accurate and the 422 Pro Res in edit looks great. My only gripe is that the battery life is not good. If you were to shoot all day running and gunning without the luxury of plugging straight into an outlet, you best have at least 4-6 batteries at your disposal to swap out...Also, if you aren't necessarily paying attention to the monitor the whole time because you are looking at your cameras viewfinder, you have nothing notifying you that its about to die, or when it actually dies...yikes...I was shooting for a few minutes the other day before I looked up and the Blade was off because the juice ran out...make sure you are constantly checking battery levels!

All in all its a great investment!

This thing is awesome! Being able to duel record to the camera and this recorder is great. The monitor is very sharp and it was mind blowing to me seeing the difference from the on camera monitor. I won't ever be able to go back to just using the on camera monitor. Only thing about it that I don't really like is that it can add a good amount of weight because of the batteries and it also feels a little plasticy but it's not that big of a deal.

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

I use it on a Nikon D800, with Zeiss glass.
                                            The 5" monitor is sharp.
Using the SSD drives I can record forever.
The batteries also last a very long time.
I have a 1st generation Samurai also, and the Ninja is better
It's a very nice piece of gear.

I will look at the Atomos Shogun when it comes out.
