Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

When I connected the Ninja Blade to my Canon 5D Mark III, I was literally blown away by the quality of the ProRes 422HQ ten bit recorded to a 500 GB hard drive inserted into the Ninja. It is important to understand that only the video signal is exported via the HDMI connection on the camera. Therefore you must bring your audio directly into the ninja either from an external source or from the monitor output of the camera. Then adjust the Ninja to compensate for a 7 frame lag in the video. I am shooting a documentary onboard a large steamship and the results are stunning. One caution however, carry an extra and well made HCMI cable. The first one I used failed after only one hour of use. I purchased an upgraded cable and it works perfectly.

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

This device serves a fantastic field monitor, the best part that is only half of what it does. The fact that it saves you HOURS converting footage to a edit friendly format is also a HUGE advantage. just plug into your computer and you are ready to edit. This is probably the best piece of gear I purchased for filming.

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

I use this to record to an SSD hard drive and avoid the AVCHD compression. Menu is easy to navigate, it comes with a sled/dock for the SSD drive which fits the case so you do not have to remove the drive from the case (comes with two drive cases) which involves the 4 small screws. The sled has a USB 3 plug, and a secondary plug if that power is not enough, and is pretty straightforward to just hook into your USB 3 port. I did not have to use the secondary one on my iMac, and it just appears on the desktop like a drive should. Monitor is very clear. Pretty straightforward set up. I only have two comments. One is the dock was defective but the company replaced it immediately which solved the problem. They reported issues with my type of SSD drive, which is an OWC 450 GB drive, but the replacement dock solved the problem, which was that the SSD drive when attached to the computer kept dismounting and mounting, in about 15 second intervals or so rendering use impossible. Not to mention possible and likely damage to the drive had I let it continue. Two, this unit gets very, very hot, and I have a worry how that will affect the SSD drive. Hot enough that it is uncomfortably hot to handle, and it happens in a matter of 10 minutes of use. This is said to be normal in the literature, and from an email that went along with the request of a replacement dock. I was told that my OWC 450GB SSD drive may be the reason for the excessive heat, but it gets hot just sitting there not recording. Otherwise, a fantastic addition to your workflow. The 450GB drive holds just over 6 hrs of 1080P video in Apple Pro Res medium setting.Oh, and one more comment, the SSD drive (not supplied, by the way) is easy to insert, but you have to have strong fingers to pull it out which I cannot do without a lot of pain. I just used a strip of gaffer tape down one side, folded the end to make a tab, and voila...problem solved. And this unit comes with a large variety of accessories and a very nice case. An added perk is that I can use my Sony NP type batteries with it just fine. Battery life seems reasonable, I have not used it enough to estimate exactly how long the battery will last. It has two battery slots so it will roll over to the other if you exhaust the first one.

Records straight to Pro_Res codec so I no longer have to worry about transcoding footage or the annoying AVCHD codec on the c100. Also shoots 10-bit color giving me more color space to work with in post.

The touch screen can be a bit annoying at times trying to get it to recognize your selection.

I love this thing. It is great. The image on the monitor is accurate and the 422 Pro Res in edit looks great. My only gripe is that the battery life is not good. If you were to shoot all day running and gunning without the luxury of plugging straight into an outlet, you best have at least 4-6 batteries at your disposal to swap out...Also, if you aren't necessarily paying attention to the monitor the whole time because you are looking at your cameras viewfinder, you have nothing notifying you that its about to die, or when it actually dies...yikes...I was shooting for a few minutes the other day before I looked up and the Blade was off because the juice ran out...make sure you are constantly checking battery levels!

All in all its a great investment!

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

This thing is awesome! Being able to duel record to the camera and this recorder is great. The monitor is very sharp and it was mind blowing to me seeing the difference from the on camera monitor. I won't ever be able to go back to just using the on camera monitor. Only thing about it that I don't really like is that it can add a good amount of weight because of the batteries and it also feels a little plasticy but it's not that big of a deal.

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

I use it on a Nikon D800, with Zeiss glass.
                            The 5" monitor is sharp.
Using the SSD drives I can record forever.
The batteries also last a very long time.
I have a 1st generation Samurai also, and the Ninja is better
It's a very nice piece of gear.

I will look at the Atomos Shogun when it comes out.

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

Much more useful than the Ninja 2 with the C100, I like the large waveform and vectorscope the most. Sharper scren and conversion from c-log is very useful. One issue I had was with the HDMI cable, though using the "perfect path" cables, I could not keep a signal going into the recorder. I used a screw mount cable on the Canon C100 and a right angle connector on the Ninja, now it works great, even for hand holding. A company in Brazil makes a loupe for this monitor, Grid? I will try that and make a shoulder mount for the C100 yet.

This recorder makes the C100 what it should have been in the first place, Why a $6k camera needs a recorder... that is so 80's. I have come full circle: Tube video cameras with external tape decks, Chip camcorders with internal tape decks, DSLR's with CF cards, and now digital cinema cameras with external digital recorders... as things change, they stay the same.

I've had the Atomos Ninja Blade for about a week and so far it was been wonderful. Easy to quickly set up and use for a run and gun shot as well as taking time to check exposure and focus. The bright screen works much better than the LCD for monitoring. Shooting at ISO 850 the C100s AVCHD files aren't that much different than the ProRes HQ files aside from the way pixels are displayed. When shooting in lowlight conditions and other difficult conditions are where the ProRes files really shine. I've been super pleased with the Blade so far and can't wait to really test its abilities

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

I own and use the ninja blade with both HDMI cameras and SDI cameras via the S2H connect unit.

Positive first: It's quite capable and does what it's supposed to. The monitor is good (TvLogic 5.6-good)and the fact that is has built in and custom-adaptable LUT monitoring is great (also helps me pull focus sometimes when we shoot LOG). The built in waveform, RGB and vectroscope are very useful as well, so kudos.
Battery life is very good. Included case is good. Unit is surprisingly lightweight, but the construction feels quite solid.

                                Not so great:
                                - Firmware is still buggy and crashed on me several times, though not during takes, during the short period I own it. Usually has to do with unplugging the signal, but not only. Also, once the Sandisk SSD was suddenly not recognized (on set) and had to be reformatted on a computer before the Ninja saw it again.

                                Features I *greatly* miss:
                                - No Pixel-to-pixel zoom
                                - No standard markers/masks (1.85, 2.35 etc)
                                - Some kind of HDMI port protector option
                                - Side 1/4'' mounting ports

                                Also would help if:
                                - Could adjust peaking sensitivity level
                                - Could send the LUT-ed image from the output port
                                - On-screen indication for "HDMI-audio-delay" option turned on or off (forgot it between shoots).
                                - The dedicated sun-hood requires unmounting the unit and in general is pretty ineffective.
                                - 3:2 Pull-down requires waving your hand in front of camera for 3-4 seconds to get initial signal recognition. Bearable, but you look pretty stupid.

In general - I would buy again, since I expect some main complains to be addressed in a firmware update.

I bought the Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder by Atomos to use with my Nikon D4 and Tilta DSLR rig. This unit has just been released here in the U.S. and I was a little concerned about purchasing something that was so new. But, the unit proved itself the very first day, right out of the box.
I had no prior experience with Atomos Products, but it was easy to figure out, right out of the box, under fire on the very first day. I had no time to read anything about it. I just plugged it into the Nikon and started shooting with it right away. The touch screen controls were very intuitive and easy to understand. They work exactly as advertised on the B&H website. When I loaded the files into my computer, they looked GREAT! I'll write in more detail as I begin to use more of the features on the unit, but so far, I give it 5+ stars!

Ordered the Ninja 2 right before this came out. Luckily there was an issue and upgraded to this unit. Though they are very similar they are very different. The screen size is larger and can be used as an accurate field monitor if you don't have one. The waveform and Vector scope are added and extremely helpful in getting the shot correct. Love this product.

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

Pretty much it's the Samurai Blade repackaged with an HDMI connection. Not a bad thing at all. I pair this with my C100/5D3 and my footage has taken a drastic change with the 10-bit encoding at 4:2:2.

With its 720P screen 325DPI it replaced my SmallHD monitor for the mere fact it contains so many pro end options False Colors/VectorScopes/Rec709 calibrated/Waveforms

For the HD market this external recorder is the best that is out there at the moment before you reach the 4K/4:4:4 recorders. I cant think of anything this product fails at other than frame rate limitations of 60FPS at 1080/720 and that I wish it came with more than one battery.

Comments about Atomos Ninja Blade 5" HDMI On-Camera Monitor & Recorder:

This little recorder easily runs full day with one large capacity battery. And it lets me put away my SmallHD DP6 monitor for lighter and faster set up. You just can't been the price for the monitor and recorder. Definitely recommend it if you need both accurate monitor and recorder.
