Comments about ASUS N550JK-DS71T 15.6" Multi-Touch Notebook Computer (Dark Gray):

I have had this laptop for a month now and wanted to wait to write my review until I had a chance to put it through its paces. This laptop has handled everything I've thrown at it with ease. I am able to run my programs for work which are very memory and processor intensive along with my email, internet, and music at the same time without any speed issues. I looked at Dell, HP, Toshiba, Samsung, Lenovo, and Mac. Based on the specs and the cost, you won't find a similarly equipped quad core laptop in this price range. The charging brick is only 3/4" longer and 1/2" wider than the HP brick and weighs about the same. So, for those concerned about the charger brick, I would focus on specs and quality instead. You won't go wrong with this laptop and based on the upgraded specs, you won't be replacing it in a year due to obsolescence either.

Have had this laptop for a few months now, a great computer for the money. It is fast, reliable, and very sturdy. I have to admit I have dropped it from carrying height not once but twice. The build is outstanding. The sound with the sub-woofer is remarkable for a laptop, loud and clear. As of yet it has handled everything I have thrown at it with no problems whatsoever. The only thing that has not impressed me is the battery life. I get three hours at best, less if it has been working hard. Not completely sold on Windows 8.1 but that has nothing to do with ASUS.A great buy, would recommend to anyone wanting a multipurpose multimedia notebook that is powerful, reliable, sturdy, and a good deal price wise for the specs.

There are many reviews of this computer so I will not go into details, only highlights some points. The key element of this laptop, it is one of the few PC with a decent IPS screen with good colours and angle of view.GPU 850GTX is pretty good for gaming, keyboard is nice and usable at night, and the little speaker for the sound is usefull.1 year international warranty, macbook style design, powerful hardware, so fare everything good except windows 8.1 which I fixed with classic shell until a hopefully better windows 9.

I ordered this laptop for my personal usage. I have had it with me for more than 1 week. So far so good. Pros:
It is running smoothly. All the parts are functioning.

                            Cons:
I would prefer mono colour, or at least black keyboard, silver screen frame.
The touch pad is so big, often I would occidentally touch the touch pad while I use the keyboard.

I did need something with a brighter screen, but it really isn't fair to compare it to a Macbook Pro Retina that's twice the cost (or even more).

I'm just starting to use this new PC. The hard drive that comes with it is too slow so I'm putting a SSD drive and more ram in to it. I have a N series ASUS already so I had no concerns with purchasing another product from them.

Comments about ASUS N550JK-DS71T 15.6" Multi-Touch Notebook Computer (Dark Gray):

This laptop has performed great so far. It stays nice and cool, which is a plus compared to many other laptops we have had and the battery lasts between 4 and 5 hours. The touch screen has worked well and not caused any problems, although if working in the desktop of Windows 8.1 some things are just to small to use your finger for so a combination of the mouse and touch screen works better. Everything on the start menu is made for touch screen so it work great. The included subwoofer works better than I expected and you do notice a little deeper, richer sound when it is plugged in.The screen is very bright and works well and the backlit keys have been great so far. Couldn't be happier so far and hope it continues. A well designed and built system. This system came with the 1TB drive, which was divided into 2 partitions, a C drive of about 384GB and the rest in D drive which was labeled as data. My only guess as to why this wasn't all in one partition by default because the drive was to big? It makes some things a pain since your documents, pictures etc. folders are all under your profile on the C drive so you need to manage this a little different but it is workable. Most laptops you can remove the battery and replace it if needed in the future. This has a concealed battery you cannot access or remove. I hope this doesn't become an issue. While it does have 2 fans for cooling, the vents are on the bottom of the laptop. It has stayed very cool so far and don't know if this will prove the be a bad design or not but right now everything is good. You just need to make sure you don't put it on something like your lap where your clothes would cover up all the vents.

Comments about ASUS N550JK-DS71T 15.6" Multi-Touch Notebook Computer (Dark Gray):

I bought this machine for software development so it needed to be a bit of a beast from a power perspective in order to handle platform virtualization and Visual Studio 2013. To be clear, it is a portable workstation in all but name and price.

As others have noted here and elsewhere, dropping in a Samsung 840 EVO SSD, while not mandatory, removes the one drag on this system's performance for those who hate to wait for anything. As with all OEM pre-loaded systems, be sure to use Clonezilla or similar software in order to replicate the Asus partitioning scheme to the SSD. Unlike the data migration software provided with the Samsung SSD, Clonezilla will copy the hidden recovery partitions along with the OS and Data partitions so you can always perform a clean Windows 8.1 install at a later time using the Asus F9 recovery boot. The Samsung Magician software is handy for optimizing the performance of the SSD and works well.

Also, be aware that removing the bottom cover requires a Torx T-5 drive so be sure to have that, a spudger and tweezers (the hard drive frame screws are recessed and the tweezers help with initial placement) along with a set of precision screwdrivers to do the job properly. (You don't want to trash your new box, right?) While you're in there, it's worth adding another stick of 8GB RAM to max out the memory to 16GB.

Having upgraded to SSD, I can tell you that this already speedy machine as delivered absolutely flies! Learning the multi-touch gestures for the touchpad removes any need to ever physically click the Mac-like touchpad "buttons." The two-finger tap for right-clicking is a personal favorite of mine.

The machine also looks and sounds good. Much of the Windows 7 Desktop goodness has been restored in Windows 8.1 Update 1 so you can feel at home with all of your usual applications while you begin to appreciate the new Windows 8 UI. I confess, I'm getting to like Windows 8! The touchscreen allows you play with the newer UI capabilities alongside the traditional Windows Desktop. Before you know it, you'll be edge-swiping the Charms bar into view without a second thought. The nice part about the touch screen is it's there if you want to use it, but you don't have to. Like many others, I personally skipped Windows 8, but am pretty pleased with Windows 8.1 and, no, I'm not a shill for Microsoft. I like Apple products too!

The n550JK ticked all the boxes I was looking for.
The build quality is top notch. All aluminum shell is slick and quite rigid almost no screen flex. The screen is indeed as good as everyone is saying crisp and bright.
I didn't have a need for the touch screen but its there if needed.
I was afraid the gloss screen would be an issue with reflections but it is the least glossy screen I have seen. I upgraded the HD to a Samsung 840 evo. *** do your research before cloning the hard drive Set up the ASUS image BU using BackTracker to a USB drive and also creating the windows USB boot, recovery backup drive before cloning. 2 USB drives 16 gig in size is probably cheaper than ordering the disc media from Asus. My first chicklet keyboard has been a good experience I like the feel and touch. The back lit keyboard is almost not needed the black lettering on the silver keys are very readable with just the spill light from the screen.
I have only tried 1 game that dipped into the GTX850 worked flawlessly no stuttering on high settings.
The audio from B&O is okay the sub fills in that always laptop missing bass response. It has substantial volume once you tweak the settings in the included audio interface. You won't feel it in your stomach and the windows won't rattle but it is satisfying. I think they are using some phase manipulation in the speaker array to enhance the stereo imaging.
My only knock so far has been the touchpad buttons.
The touch pad buttons are not separated at all it is just at the bottom of the touch pad and it requires precise pressing and some what firm touch to click either left or right clicks not a deal breaker but just not perfect. The power brick is on the large side but needed to power the i7 and GTX850 It actually looks like Asus put some design time on it, it's not an off the shelf brick.
The optical drive is a little awkward when closing, probably will get a caddie to house org HD.

I've only had the product for about 2 weeks now. My first impression was that its very nicely made, solid and clean look. Then I was a little disappointed by the screen, as it seemed a little less bright than my last laptop (which didn't have an IPS screen). However I adjusted the screen colors (it was way too warm) and brightness and now its definitely better than anything I've had before. I also strongly recommend installing a SSD in this laptop as the 5200rpm drive is very slow and a SSD makes it a completely different laptop.

For the price, its very hard to beat in this category.
