The GT2543L Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long) from Gitzo features Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT2543L has a load capacity of 39.7 lb, extends to a maximum height of 70.5", and folds down to 24" for transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 6.3". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity, and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

Comments about Gitzo GT2543L Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

I own the Gitzo Traveler GT 1542T. It is a perfect tripod if you need to travel: it collapses down to fit comfortably within a carry-on suitcase. However I wanted a regular daily use tripod that would A) come to at least eye level, and B) was a bit more sturdy in situations like strong wind and the occasional rushing surf.

I purchased the Mountaineer GT2543L and the GT3542L to compare and kept the series 2. These two tripod have near identical specs (within .5 to 1 inch for collapsed/expanded sizes) but the series 3 is half a pound heavier. Doesn't sound like much but here are my results:

Im sure that under rigid enough examination the series 3 would be more sturdy than the series 2, physics simply demands that that is true. However I noticed no difference to my eye in the results. Both tripod provided an exceeding amount of stability over my series 1 Traveler.

The 3 series was noticeably bulkier visually, more cumbersome to handle and the weight difference, though only .5 a pound, was apparent. Keep in mind that you're usually handling a tripod one handed: one to hold and the other to twist and expand the legs. If you're like me you don't like using the center post so you're always making minor adjustments to get the height just right and using the series 2 tripod feels like less of a burden. The bulk of the series 3 also became a factor in regards to getting it in and out of camera bag straps. Might not sound important but I'm constantly moving around to different location on a shoot and I like to keep the camera in my hands so the tripod is going in and out of the bag straps. The series 3 required more adjusting of straps compared to the series 2 which felt as convenient as my series 1 traveler.

I would not hesitate to recommend this tripod. Its amazing, stable, beautiful. It's one of those products where you want to baby it because you know its valuable. The only situation I would recommend the series 3 is studio work because the cost difference is only 20 bucks so if you're not traveling with it why not have the series 3?

Keep in mind that Travelers are amazing tripod and they feel like feathers compared to the Mountaineers, BUT they are shorter tripod. I you need a taller tripod, with great stability, and a respectable low weight then get this tripod.

Comments about Gitzo GT2543L Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

Gitzo has alway made great tripods, and the GT2543 is no exception. My only complaint is that this tripod relies on a center post to reach a height suitable for a 6 ft tall photographer. That compromise necessitates extra steps to make photographs near ground level. Despite this limitation, I would recommend this tripod to tall photographers who are looking for a carbon tripod.

Comments about Gitzo GT2543L Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

I use this with a Nikon 300mm lens which is heavy and it handles it wonderfully with the Wimberley WH-200. I do wish I realized I was also going to have buy a bullhead to use it with smaller lenses and portrait. I'm glad it is extremely light because that helps make up the difference with the Wimberly WH-200 which is very heavy. I also order a bullhead but haven't received it as of yet.

Comments about Gitzo GT2543L Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Long):

I finally decided that I needed a first class tripod to support my photo gear (Nikon D810 and various lenses including the 80-400mm VR zoom). I mainly shoot still photos of all kinds of things and a steady platform is essential. Years ago I had a heavy Bogen tripod that was murder to carry around. I determined I would need something much lighter but still steady enough to do the job and the GT2543L fits the bill nicely. There was no difficulty setting the tripod up right out of the box. It is light weight and easy to carry and supports all of my equipment easily. Thanks to the discounted price and the $ instant rebate it was affordable. I was also impressed with B&H's service. I happened to notice about two weeks later that the price of the tripod had been reduced and B&H was happy to credit my credit card for the difference in price.

Bought to replace the 3530ls which while rock solid went underu sed due to it's folded size and weight. Looses a star only for lacking a level indicator and need to buy spiked feet separately.

Upgrade from Manfrotto 190x + 486RC2 to GT2543L + Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 sp just like upgrade Toyota Camary to BMW , totally different experience , especially when you shoot micro , long exposure or with long lens ...this combination is the best. it is very easy/quicker to setup , extream smooth adjustment and supper stable.I am 5"11 tall, it was difficult for me to choose between GT2542 vs GT2543L, Before purchasing I have chatted with B&H professionals (they are the best) from the web to get advice from them, finally I choose GT2543L and I think I made the right choice , with fully extended this tripod reached to my eye level , perfect for shoot in liveview mode, even without extend the lower leg sections, the height is already same as my old 190x … to me really no need to extend the center column to every height that I need to increase the tripod's stability.Supper tripod , Best combination, Perfect choice !
