The GK1542-80QD Mountaineer Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod with Ball Head from Gitzo combines the GT1542 tripod legs with the Series 1 center ball head. It features Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters, and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The tripod has a load capacity of 22 lb, extends to a maximum height of 66.9", and folds down to 25.4" for transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 10.2". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity, and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

The Series 1 center ball head is a lightweight magnesium alloy ball head with a QR plate that incorporates many innovative features. A large locking knob controls the movement of the ball, while a separate lock controls the 360° panning motion. The Spring Assisted Double Lock combines two locking systems in one to maximize locking power and ball smoothness. A double quick-release safety system consists of two safety pins to protect your camera from falling from the head when the locking knob is released.

Comments about Gitzo GK1542-80QD Mountaineer Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod with Ball Head:

After marginal success with a lower-end Manfrotto tripod/head combo, the step up to a Gitzo GK1542-80QD certainly made quick set up and balance adjustments much more possible. Though the Series 1 kit carries the lightest load capacity (Series 2 and 3 being the others), the 10-kg limit is more than ample for a Canon 6D equipped with a Canon 70-200 mm f/2.8L zoom lens, for example. Stability is good, particularly for the overall weight of tripod and ballhead, which, so far, seems quite resistant to slippage. Yes, you do pay a premium for Gitzo, but in this case, you definitely get what you pay for (especially if a rebate is being offered). This product is especially worth consideration if you don't want to hassle with set up and extra weight while out in the field.
