The PocketWizard PowerMC2 Receiver Module works with the Einstein E640 flash unit to provide wireless power control using ControlTL technology. The module plugs directly into the flash and operates remotely with either a MiniTT1 or FlexTT5 for adjustment of power settings via flash exposure compensation in-camera, however it will act as a simple trigger with any PocketWizard radio.

The ControlTL firmware is programmable and upgradeable as well as offering a wide variety of additional features. One of these functions is ZoneControl, which works with AC3 ZoneController or MultiMAX radio for controlling up to three zones of light. Also, it has PowerTracking and HyperSync for even more control and it is designed to receive its power from the attached flash unit.

Manual Power Control allows you to adjust power of the flash through either Flash Exposure Compensation in-camera or through an AC3 ZoneController radio for zone power control
ZoneControl works with AC3 ZoneController or MultiMAX radio to control up to three zones: A, B, and C
PowerTracking automatically compensates power settings based on changes in ISO, aperture, or flash exposure compensation in Auto mode
HyperSync allows users to reach faster sync speed with full power flashes
USB port allows for connection to program the channel and zone as well as power settings, modeling light settings, and beep options. It also allows the unit to be upgraded

The PW PowerMC2 turns the PCB E640 into the easiest-to-use strobe I've ever handled. The manuals and PW Wiki can be a bit overwhelming, but this trigger is actually quite intuitive after experimenting with it for a little while.

Channels (ControTL or standard) and groups are selected from the E640's display. The E640 will automatically switch to second/rear curtain sync at the shutter speed set via the PW Utility. HyperSync works at full power, but not below.

The best feature is the wireless manual power adjustment. With tricky subjects or rapidly-changing exposures, like fire performers with burning props, you can keep up with the situation fairly easily. The AC3 Controller gives you 6 stops of control, the flash has a 9-stop range. This controller will shift the flash power away from the set point, so you can max out the AC3, then turn the flash up or down via the rear controls to establish the necessary maximum. With the maximum set, the AC3 will let you go 6 stops down in 1/3-stop increments. If you need to go lower, use the control panel on the E640 to reduce the maximum in 1/10-stop increments. This means you can hit the flash's full power range when combining the AC3 and E640 controls, but only 6 stops at a time via the AC3 alone. I have yet to run into a situation where I need more than 6 stops of wireless control, so as long as your initial setup is in the ballpark, this isn't a problem.

Hard to write about, but fairly intuitive to use. Only downside is that the flash's connection isn't terribly solid, mechanically speaking. A bit of a concern, but not a deal-breaker when you're talking about this level of control.

I'm portrait and wedding photographer, I use the MC2 with both Flex/Mini for Canon as well as Plus III as a "dumb" trigger. Hyper-Sync is more marketing for this item than truth. Yes I can get it to sync at 1/8000th of a second but only at full power. Anything less than full power and you get regular banding. Great if you only need full power, no so good if you want to actually shoot at a wide aperture with a large, close in light source. Yes you can make your aperture smaller but then that defeats the purpose of hyper-syncing.
I love the fact that it sits on top of the Einstein and has potential for less interference or point of failure. Point of failure, meaning loose cable or low battery. You have neither in to worry about in this case. That being said in true PocketWizard fashion in the middle of my first shoot with it the Plus III in my hot shoe decided it didn't want to work half way through the shoot. Battery was fine, channel, etc. were all fine but after about 150 frames the connection died. I swapped out the Plus III with another one and it was fine. Fine but frustrating, to pay gobs of $$$ for top gear and still have something always seems to go wrong with one of the PW's. To be fair in this particular case the MC2 was not the issue but I can't give 4 stars for overall spotty performance and unfortunately that's been PW's record over the last 5 years as a location photographer.

Comments about PocketWizard PowerMC2 Receiver Module:

Really like my new pocket wizard PowerMC2 to use on the Einstein. I have been using the alien bees for years and needed 1 new flash so thought I would get it for the extra features. Just remember to do a firmware update on any of your pocket wizard transmitters before using. Its easy to do and will possibly save you some headaches. Have fun.

if you are looking for hyper sync with the Einstein Alien bees this is the way to go, with the Flex TT5 it is really good easy setup and works awesome now i can eve shoot with my DSLRup to 1250/s really good for sport photography with strobes!!!! better than using speedlites!

and i can get more dynamic range in one photo thanks that i can compensate with speed! it is awesome that i can not be limited just to 1/200s in a super bright sunny day

The PowerMC2 allows me to control the power on the Einstein E640 right from my camera using the AC3 and Mini TT1. There are a ton of options which are configurable if you go as far as connect the unit to your laptop and connect in with the software. Lots of options to suit your needs.

Comments about PocketWizard PowerMC2 Receiver Module:

I have three of these, and they work great. The only thing I don't like about them is how the pins are subject to damage if you're not careful. But that's a result of the Einstein design, so there's no way around that. I've had my others for a few years, and no accidents yet. This is taller (sticks up more) than the Paul C Buff version. I know, because I have both systems. I do worry about it getting hit, because it sticks out so far from the monolight. Again, this is an Einstein design issue, and PocketWizard could only work with what's available.I love being able to get 'hypersync' with these, and have shot at 1/1000 second outside. I also love being able to control the output of each Einstein with the PocketWizard Zone Controller. Saves lots of time.

Plugs directly into your Einstein lights without additional cables. Works great with the Pocketwizard Mini TT1 or Flex 5 for Hypersync (shooting above flash sync speeds). For location shoots, this works fantastic.

I purchased the PowerMC2 for use with an Einstein 640 light. I plugged it into the unit, set it up using the menu on the Einstein and went to work. I connected seamlessly with the TT1/CC3 combo. I could easily adjust output from my camera in both indoor and outdoor settings. Works great.

Finally back on the market after an overblown "safety concern" Does what it is supposed to do. Controls an Einstein 640 with a PW. It's massively overpriced and subject to all the limitations of the PW, but if you have already invested in that platform you will want this to go with your Einsteins. Works well with Sekonic 458 DR. 4 Stars because it is a "dumb product", i.e., can only trigger and is overpriced.

I thought these things were supposed to be plug in and fire. Not so. I set up my Einsteins for a big photo shoot and I was using the Pocketwizard Plus III to try and remote trigger. I had all the correct settings according to the manuals and documentation. Nothing. Would not fire. Tried every troubleshooting technique I could think of, nothing. Thank God I had sense enough to take my Cybersync Trigger and Receivers with me that day or I would have been TOTALLY SCREWED!!! Am going to continue to try and figure out what went wrong, but when you're at a BIG photo shoot like I was, with two VERY WELL KNOWN celebrities, you really want the equipment to work properly right from the get-go. Not so this time. Sorry Pocketwizard, YOU FAILED ME and so I can only give you a 1-Star.IF I figure out what happened, I may come back and re-update this review, but only if I can figure out what happened.Thank you.

It triggers my Einstein with problems. I like that this new unit came with the usb cover, unlike the previous versions sold by Paul Buff.

Comments about PocketWizard PowerMC2 Receiver Module:

This is a great product when combined with a PocketWizard MiniTTL and AC3 Zone Contorller and Paul C. Buff's Einstein flash units. It gives you easy and total control of your lights.
