The Phantom 2 Quadcopter with Zenmuse H3-3D 3-Axis Gimbal is a bundle from DJI that is designed to provide an aerial platform for shooting stabilized video with a GoPro HERO3 or HERO3+ camera.

The Phantom 2 Quadcopter is the second generation Phantom quad-rotor RC helicopter from DJI and features a larger battery and improved prop design, and flying time that lasts to up to 22 minutes, compared to around 14 minutes on the original DJI Phantom Quadcopter. This product will appeal to a variety of potential users, from RC aircraft hobbyists who want to record their flights to videographers and photographers looking to open up a whole new range of shooting possibilities.

Included with this "ready-to-fly" version of the Phantom 2 Quadcopter is a 6-channel, 2.4 GHz transmitter (TX) that comes pre-bound with the aircraft. It features an operational range extending up to 3,280' line-of-sight, depending on conditions.

Because of the complexity associated with multi-rotor aircraft, the Naza-M V2 flight control system in the Phantom 2 relies on a GPS-based navigation as well as gimbal, compass, and other data to maintain flight stability and provide other assisted-flying features. While fully manual operation is possible, and can be unlocked using the Naza Assistant Software, most users, especially videographers hoping to get the smoothest possible shoots, will opt for GPS or GPS Attitude flight mode. In GPS Mode the Naza system keeps the Quadcopter stable and right-side-up when moving, and holds it in a fixed horizontal and vertical position whenever you release the sticks.

New for this model, the Phantom 2 features a 5200 mAh battery system that has been simplified from the previous Phantom version. The battery now slots in without having to connect any DC leads, and features four LED indicators visible on the outside, tail-end of the aircraft helping you keep track of battery levels in flight. Charging is also simplified, with all of the charging circuitry now built into the battery itself, there is no more separate balance lead to worry about plugging in. Because of this design, the Phantom 2 battery cannot be charged with all-purpose balance chargers, only chargers made specifically for it.

The Zenmuse H3-3D Gimbal is used mount a naked GoPro HERO3 or HERO3+ action camera on the Phantom 2. Unlike its predecessor, the H3-2D, the H3-3D provides not only tilting and canting, but also allows the camera to pan side-to-side. The GCU (gimbal control unit) is built into the Phantom 2 so there is no additional internal hardware to install and operation is plug-and-play. Adjustments and firmware updates can be made using the assistant software for Windows, which is downloadable from DJI.

Warning: Never use the DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter with your GoPro camera when both devices have their Wi-Fi systems turned on. The DJI Phantom's Wi-Fi and the GoPro camera's Wi-Fi run on the same frequency, so if you use them together when both Wi-Fi systems are engaged, the DJI Phantom's transmitter will lose the ability to communicate with the DJI Phantom Quadcopter. Whenever this happens, you will not be able to tell the Phantom where to fly. This may result in loss of property or damage to your equipment.

Since it is a little unclear... the H3-3D gimbal is not installed to the DJI. Not a deal breaker, but would have been nice to know. I've been flying the Phantom 2 with H3-2D gimbal and it's great for the most part (still need to install the 3D gimbal). It can be a little complicated getting everything set up between hardware and software. There's definitely a lot of research to do to install the gimbal, transmitter for monitor, etc., and can be time consuming. Figuring out how to adjust certain settings through the software is a bit tedious and confusing as well, but everything is mostly clearly marked within the software- once you get to that point.

As far as the build, it's pretty solid and has some power behind it! Overall I'm impressed every time I fly. >20 minute fly time is a pain, so I'd recommend having 3 batteries. If you throw a batt. on the charger as soon as it dies you'll have it fully charged by the time you're done with the 3rd one (more or less). I often fly without a monitor but would highly recommend one (or goggles, depending on your situation).

It's definitely something you'll have to put a lot of time into before you can call yourself a pro.

I'll update my review once I get everything installed and ready to fly (daunting process).

How about an HONEST review? Well, here it is...

DJI should be ashamed for taking the great design of their previous gimbal, the H3-2D (2 axis gimbal), and throwing it out the window with the H3-3D (3 axis gimbal).

    Here are some facts:

-EXTREMELY FRAGILE construction. The 2 axis gimbal had an intelligent, robust and foolproof way of connecting your GoPro to the Phantom's video transmition's interface. With the 3 axis gimbal, the interface is a tiny, super fragile ribon cable that restricts access to your microSD card slot when connected, and adds 1 extra conection step every time you mount/unmount your GoPro (see picture).

-High failure rate. I bought one of these kits and had to return it to B&H since the gimbal was defective out of the box. Thankfully, as always, B&H provided the BEST customer service! I bought a second kit, and lo and behold, failure again. The ribon cable pre-installed on the gimbal would only transmit video if I pressed against it a certain way with my finger. Thankfully DJI gives you a spare cable. Why? Because they expect their ribon cables to fail, that's why! 2 out of 2 units failed straight out of the box. For me, that equals a 100% failure so far.

-Get ready for lots of LEG in your footage! (see picture) By adding a 3rd axis of stabilization, your GoPro will now pan left and right to compensate for jerky yaw movements. The H3-3D gimbal puts the GoPro's lens too close to the Phantom's left leg, making it visible anytime the gimbal turns your camera counter-clockwise. Solution? Mount your GoPro upside down to put its lens smack in the middle of both legs! Physically, the gimbal allows this! BUT... then you can't connect your camera to DJI's short fragile interface cable, so you're left flying without the benefit of live video transmission.

If DJI had any good sense, they would solve all of these problems by reintroducing the foolproof H3-2D connection port on their H3-3D gimbal, in such a way that the GoPro mounts upside down, thus putting the lens right in the middle so you can enjoy your footage rather than your Phantom's leg making constant unwanted appearances.

As always, B&H gets an A+ for customer service. DJI gets an F- for unthinkably terrible design (undoing what they'd actually gotten right in their previous model!)

Comments about DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter with Zenmuse H3-3D 3-Axis Gimbal:

I spent nearly $ putting a GoPro in the air with their Phantom last year. The Quadcopter flies and lifts, but the JELLO is terrible making everything I shot garbage. So, I added their $ ZenMuse gimbal last year along with a video downlink and a monitor system. Right out of the box, the gimbal would spontaneously stop working and the camera would just dangle off the bottom of the quad like a broken leg, pointing off at unusable angle. So, I would bring the rig down, land and restart the shoot time and time and time again. So, I tried to get some help from DJI and they didn't even have a telephone number to call. Some guy in Texas who never answered or returned calls. Some number in Japan. The only redemption came from Aerial Media Pros in Costa Mesa who were magnificent in their help. But, without spare parts, they couldn't do much. So, it's been in the trash ever sense. I finally removed the ZenMuse and the downlink and went back to the land of Amateur Jello for the Africa trip I just took. But, what a bunch of rank amateurs and DJI.Add insult to injury, this year they drop their prices by more than 50% and start a Customer Loyalty program for future purchases! How about those of us who you Ripped Off last year? Any rewards for us? Nope: we're still on our own with a pile of garbage.

Comments about DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter with Zenmuse H3-3D 3-Axis Gimbal:

I operated a Phantom 1 for 14 months with 145 perfect flights for aerial photography. A few weeks ago I purchased the Phantom 2 with the H3-3D gimbal. Complete disaster. 23 flights with the Phantom 2 resulted in 5 of those flights ending in an uncontrollable auto-land condition where it fell from the sky.A check with DJI service revealed that other users were experiencing the same problem but they were not able to offer any suggestions other than to check the Phantom user forums. The last unexpected and uncontrolled auto-land flight resulted in the gimbal not initializing or leveling upon start up. That gimbal was sent to DJI for inspection. I then purchased a second H3-3D gimbal to use in the meantime. When that gimbal arrived it failed to work properly right out of the box.The chrome caps on the servo motors of the second gimbal were not as clean as the first gimbal and I would not be surprised if I was sent a refurbished gimbal sold "as new."I have talked with other Phantom 2 owners who are having similar problems. I no longer believe the Phantom 2 is safe to fly and will be working to get it replaced or a refund issued.

in 2015 the FAA is suppose to get its head out and make it legal for commercial photographer to use "drone" aircraft for real estate photography a and other commercial uses...so, until it's legal I'm learning to fly better with the Phantom2, practice, practice, practice.
One really nice feature of the GoPro camera is the ability to transmit to your smart phone, but this blocks the controls of the Phantom.
Either GoPro or Quadcopter needs to change their WyFi so they can be used together - this is a major fault and will keep me looking for an alternative system.
PS: try recording while you fly backwards - great results!

I bought this and a KumbaCam FPV deluxe set up--The customer service at KumbaCam is worldclass! I had a few issues ( me not so bright) and the guys there were on it in a second--solve my issues and now I'm flying high!

Comments about DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter with Zenmuse H3-3D 3-Axis Gimbal:

Was amazed how easy it was to fly and very impressed with the stabilizing ability of the H3-3D gimbal along with the video quality of my my Go Pro Hero 3 + Black Edition. Don't know how it compares with the DJI Vision + video, but the Go Pro video quality is amazing for the size and much very versatile with video settings. The H3-3D gimbal is very stable and so far has survived some rough landings. I've now mastered bringing the Phantom 2 to a hover so I can reach it with my hand and shut down the motors in mid air to avoid rough landings in uneven or rocky terrain. I think propellor guards are a must for beginners until you get more proficient.
