The black Olympus Stylus TOUGH TG-3 Digital Camera is a compact, ruggedly-designed point-and-shoot featuring enhanced durability to enable its use in a wide variety of conditions. In addition to being fully sealed from dust, the TG-3 is built to withstand underwater dives up to 50' deep, falls from up to 7' high, temperatures as low as 14°F, and pressure up to 220 lbf. While serving to protect on an array of adventures, these features are also well-suited to use in everyday circumstances.

In regard to imaging, a 16MP BSI CMOS sensor and TruePic VII image processor work to produce high-resolution imagery with notable low-light sensitivity and quality. The combination of these two technologies form Olympus' iHS technology, which serves to realize fast performance throughout the camera system, including a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 5 fps and the FAST AF system, while also maintaining low image noise with a native sensitivity of ISO 6400. The sensor and processor also support recording full HD 1080p movies at 30 fps as well as SD 480p movies at up to 120 fps.

Benefitting the imaging capabilities of the TG-3 is a fast 4x optical zoom f/2.0-4.9 lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25-100mm. Complementing this lens' reach, as well as aiding the camera's use in low-light conditions, is sensor-shift image stabilization, which helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake.

For image monitoring and review, as well as menu navigation, a 3.0" 460k-dot LCD is incorporated into the camera's design. Accessing the menu system reveals a host of different camera features and settings, including a built-in intervalometer, automated Time-Lapse movie creation, a close-focusing Microscope Mode, and the ability to utilize built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS, and an electronic compass.

TOUGH Design
The TG-3 is designed to withstand a wide variety of conditions, ranging from harsh climates to everyday mishaps:
  • Waterproof to depths of 50' / 15.2m
  • Freezeproof to temperatures as low as 14°F / -10°C
  • Shockproof to falls from 7' / 2.1m high
  • Crushproof to withstand up to 220 lbf / 99.8 kgf of pressure
  • Dustproof to protect the internal components of the camera
16MP BSI CMOS Sensor and TruePic VII Image Processor
A 16 megapixel 1/2.3" backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and TruePic VII image processor work together to enable iHS (Intelligent High Speed) Technology, which benefits both the overall image quality and performance throughout the TG-3. The BSI design of the image sensor realizes notable sensitivity to ISO 6400 along with reduced noise levels to enhance image quality, especially in regard to working in difficult lighting conditions. Complementing the sensor's duties is an apt image processor, which benefits both the look and feel of imagery as well as enables a top full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 5 fps for working with fast-moving subjects. Furthermore, iHS technology also supports the use of the Intelligent Auto shooting mode, with accelerated scene recognition, as well as an enhanced FAST AF system.
4x Optical Zoom Lens and Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
Incorporated into the compact body design is fast 4x optical zoom f/2.0-4.9 lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25-100mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives. Benefitting this lens' versatile zoom range is sensor-shift image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake to realize sharper imagery with slower shutter speeds, longer focal lengths, and during macro shooting. Additionally, 2x Super Resolution Zoom and 4x digital zoom can also be utilized to effectively increase the zoom magnification for working with distant subjects.
Full HD Movie Recording and Time-Lapse Movie
Full HD 1920 x 1080p video recording is supported at 30 fps, as well as high-speed 120 fps or 240 fps recording, for slow-motion playback, in the SD 640 x 480 format or 432 x 324 format, respectively. Beyond straight movie capture, a dedicated Time-Lapse Movie mode automatically compresses images made with the interval shooting function into a 10 second HD 720p movie with 10 fps playback. The built-in intervalometer enables you to record up to 99 sequential frames with 1 second to 24 hour intervals, and a 1 second to 24 hour start timer.
Built-In Wi-Fi, GPS, and eCompass
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables seamless sharing of photos and movies from the camera to a linked mobile device for instant sharing online. Utilizing the Olympus Image Share app, you can also remotely control the camera from a smartphone or tablet, including the ability to zoom in or out, adjust exposure and focus, and release the shutter. Additionally, utilizing the location data from a mobile device, you can geotag your imagery for plotting to an interactive map using the included Olympus Viewer 3 software.

Complementing the Wi-Fi connectivity, an integrated GPS module can quickly locate your position and also enables on-board geotagging and landmark-tagging capabilities. Furthermore, an electronic compass is also available, and can display a variety of information including latitude and longitude; atmospheric and water pressure; altitude and water depth; and the date and time.
Microscope Mode
Contrasting the wide field shooting abilities of the TG-3, dedicated Microscope shooting modes can be used to home in on minute details. Four different modes are available: Microscope, for close-up shooting as near as 1cm away; Microscope Control, which allows you to dial in different display magnifications using microscope-like controls for attaining critical focus; Focus Bracketing, where a series of individual images are recorded at different focus positions; and Focus Stacking, where, again, a series of individually-focused images are recorded and automatically composited into a single frame realizing an extended depth of field than possible with a single exposure.
Other Camera Features
  • The built-in 3.0" 460k-dot LCD monitor permits bright, clear viewing during shooting, image review, or when navigating the menu system.
  • Face Detection AF, AF Tracking, and AF Lock focus modes are available to suit working with a wide variety of subject types.
  • Photo Story is a creative mode allowing you to create a multi-perspective narrative within a single image, with multiple templates available to choose from.
  • Backlight HDR automatically combines multiple exposures within a single frame to realize an extended range of tones with greater shadow and highlight detail than a single exposure can record.
  • Hand-Held Starlight mode helps to create sharp, blur-free images of nighttime scenes without the use of a tripod.
  • A built-in Panorama mode allows you to create in-camera panoramic imagery, up to 360° across, by simply panning the camera about the scene.
  • 11 different Art Filters can be applied to creatively enhance imagery: Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Color, Grainy Film, Pin Hole, Diorama, Dramatic Tone, Fish Eye, Sparkle, Reflection, and Fragmented.
  • Three different Picture Modes can be applied to alter the overall quality of imagery: Vivid, Neutral, and Muted.
  • In-addition to the standard 2 second and 12 second self-timer delays, a custom self-timer can be set to record 1-10 pictures in a 1-3 second interval with a 1-30 second start timer.

I give this camera 4 stars instead of 5 just because it does not have the capacity to shoot in Raw...outside of that this is a really fun camera that far exceeds my expectations. I got it mainly for its microscope mode and that does not disappointI thought the stacking would be great...and it really does work nicely if you have great light...but in lower light it will choose a high ISO setting and you get considerable noise and the image is not as clear due to the camera processing the image to get rid of the noise and you lose some detail...so I prefer the other microscope modes that i can use ISO 100 on...and the results just amaze me...I used to shoot macro with the tokina 100 2.8 and always had difficulty getting an image that was very sharp...the tough 3 delivers very nice images in micro mode and very sharp if you shoot a low ISO...I also have used this to do street photography...I have it on custom mode and the f stop at 2.0...the camera does amazingly well...quick to focus and you can set this camera up to have a silent shutter...lots of fun features...the video is adequate ...just do not expect to make a high quality video with it...the intervelometer works very nicely as well even though you are limited to 99 frames...you can alway put a bunch together in post to make a longer movie. i have not used it in the water yet but I did notice whenever the doors are not shut completely...when you turn on the camera a little warning will come on and ask you to trap the doors for debris before going into water...you can even use the flash on camera to control off camera speedlights...I think this camera is a very nice value

I purchased the Tough TG-3 for a vacation, thinking perhaps it might be an improvement over my currently displaced Lumix DMC-FT5. I used the camera for less than a week, before it started going wonky on exposures, giving me an unusable shot at least 80% of the time, the remaining 20% shots that were more or less usable were only on a select couple of settings, such as dramatic artistic, so good luck to me if that's not what I was going for. Many shots were lost because it simply refused to work when I needed it to.

I noticed around this time that the front ring on my allegedly "Tough" camera had fallen off. Although we were on vacation, we were all getting over bad colds so the camera was being used lightly and not being dropped off of mountains or anything of the like. This may be causing the exposure problem, although this is just a metal ring and not a lighting ring, but I don't know this for sure.

Another overwhelming concern is that twice one of the doors, securely closed and locked, managed to wiggle itself open on it's own. I had purchased this camera for the specific purpose of underwater use. Due to storms, we never did use the camera for this intended use so I cannot report on this functionality -- but I would be very concerned regarding bringing this underwater with such a flimsy hatch on an underwater camera. I will say that the Panasonic hatch system is far more sturdy and gives one much more confidence. And they don't even call their camera Tough!

Oh the other thing that is monumentally annoying, that I didn't happen to see in my research, is that the video is in Apple format, so good luck if you are an Android and PC User. Allegedly you can download an Apple viewer onto your PC, but this doesn't seem to work and now I'm stuck with video I can't access.

While some have touted how nice it is that it explains each setting as you scroll through, I found it not ideal that you had to scroll one-by-one through many controls all in-a-line without shortcutting. I think there might be a workaround to set up settings you use comonly but I didn't get that far. As configured, you can lose shots by having to take such a long time getting to the setting you want.

I will say the macro feature is very cool. My results were inconsistent, sometimes it wanted to focus from basically on the item, sometimes it needed to be a couple of inches away. I will say though that all of this could be operator error. Still a point-and-shoot shouldn't require an advanced degree to figure out the operation.

I tended to use the dramatic and pop art features a fair amount, as well as the macro. I will say image quality, before the exposure issue, was adequate, but I just can't get over the thing falling apart and popping a door hatch twice within a half-week.

One thing that is nice is that it turns on quickly and is ready for a shot quicker than any other camera I have had. The GPS also seems fairly functional, but I didn't get to do much with that other than share photos with my tablet.

I am returning this product. Overall, I would half-consider giving this another shot, but probably would not, because if I bought this and took a vacation in 6-months and it died in the water, I would then be stuck with something unusable. If you do go for this camera, definitely buy the extra insurance!

    Great!

Comments about Stylus TOUGH TG-3 Digital Camera (Black):

I purchased the camera to take scuba diving. I have yet to take it in the ocean but I took it swimming and it is amazing! I was a bit apprehensive because electronics don't belong in water but it is still working and I got some great underwater shots! I tried to keep it submerged as long as possible for my future endeavers. I'm glad that it has so many settings and adjustments, the wifi is very convenient. Easy to use, good battery life. The shutter is a bit slow but I'm used to quick shutter speeds on my DSLR- I'm sure once I perfect the aperture, it'll be just fine. All in all, a great purchase for such a reasonable price!

So far so good! It shoots nice pictures above and under water as well as video with good quality. Some settings are a bit not opitimized, in particular the underwater settings do not work well, as I had to optimize the settings on my own, which took some time to shoot under water.

I was very impressed with image quality, even in poor lighting conditions, and the microscope setting is fantastic for detailed macro shooting.

Unfortunately we need reliable GPS data and this camera doesn't deliver. Even in wide open areas the GPS was 10s of meters off.

Best all around point and shoot camera!

Comments about Stylus TOUGH TG-3 Digital Camera (Black):

Ordered this camera frombhphotovideo.com after extensive research o the internet. Received it 3 days later and took it on vacation to Jamaica. It is everything it says it is. I took it scuba diving to 50 ft. Took it to the beach of course and it was dropped in the sand and once on the concrete walkway. All you have to do to clean it is rinse it in water. I was cheap and bought a smaller SD card, but was no problem, because you can download all your pictures straight to your smart phone. You can even use your smart phone to to take remote pictures through the camera. The pictures are the best I have taken. This is truly the best camera I have ever had or heard of. If they could only make a real good long range, water proof zoom for it, then you would never need another camera. Very satisfied with the purchase though.

Good: Tough, battery life, pictures especially macro mode
Bad: charger that comes with it (buy after-market with some extra batteries)

made sure to buy before a trip which included snorkeling. It was perfect. Gotta say, this is my first digital camera and I found I used it more than my film Minolta SRT101 which I also lugged along. Pretty intuitive and no problem taking underwater for about an hour. The screen was difficult to see underwater in clear Florida Keys water but performed great. May slightly overexpose in bright light outside but a minor quibble. great travel camera although I look forward to getting one of Olympus' OD rigs for more serious shots.

This camera was amazing in how it picked up light, captured motion and was able to produce clear shots while moving. The 3 underwater settings are great. On land, it performed eqaually well. The quality is very high and price point creates great value. I highly recommend it.

Use this camera for bicycle rides MTB and road. It lives in my back jersey pocket. Just took it to Belize. Did not take it under water but it often got wet and covered in sun screen. Photos excellent. Only suggestion would be some kind of lens cap. Cleaning off the sunscreen was a drag. Used it in auto mode 95% of the time.

Bought this for a trip to Hawaii and it worked wonderfully until the last day. You must be real careful that the ports for the charging cables and battery for locked. I went paddle boarding and the charging port popped open on a spill and the camera got wet and died. Sending it back to Olypmus so I have my fingers crossed. Only complaint is the latches popped open too easily. It's a pretty straight forward camera that takes good pictures. You HAVE to get used to focusing the camera before taking the picture to get good results (pressing the button half way down). First few pictures we took we didn't do that and we turned out as shadows. Just super bummed I bought the TG3 and within 2 weeks the newer model was released.

Comments about Stylus TOUGH TG-3 Digital Camera (Black):

I got this camera to replace my last camera (An Olympus SP590 Ultrazoom) which I'd donated to my work for marketing photos.

Over the 4 years I'd had the 590, I realized I didn't use the ultra zoom often enough, but kept leaving it behind when I went where I really wanted good pictures; the beach, fishing, skiing, for fear of breaking it.

The TG-3 lets me have a full featured camera with me anywhere I go, on the water, in the water, on the slopes. Heck I took it with me on Bourbon street in NOLA and didn't have to worry about splashed drinks or drops, and it's small enough to be in my front pocket (Instead of hanging it around my neck like a lame tourist. Which I am, but I don't like to look like I am.

I thought I'd miss the EVF from my last camera, but the lcd is bright and clear even in bright sun. The pictures are hi res and do take up a lot of memory, make sure you get a big enough card, the 8GB from my old camera wasn't big enough for me with this (~600 pics). The sequential shoot is very fast, so you wind up taking 2-3 pics with every shutter button press.

Comments about Stylus TOUGH TG-3 Digital Camera (Black):

I used to have water proof camera (different brand) that was great for water/shock proof, but image quality was bad. This camera has overall good image quality and surprisingly easy to use. best feature is mode dial is in the back of the camera instead of top, which enable me to change the mode while i'm focusing on the image.

In addition, WIFI allows me to down load the image on my IPHONE and remote control the camera.

Too bad Olympus discontinue this camera

This is a great camera. I was skeptical about the waterproof statement. After testing it in the sink, my wife and I have used the camera for several ocean going events. It works great. We haven't had a chance to play with all of the different features yet. The collage function is a fantastic tool.

So far so good! This camera is no ordinary point & shoot -- you can tell by how substantial it feels in your hands & the picture quality has definitely been up to par for the Olympus brand. I have no fear about handing this camera to my 3 nephews! :)

Works great, easy menus, good photos, tough as nails. This unit takes better photos of indoor impromptu point and shoot moments than my DSLR with a 77mm lens. This is the perfect camera for a summer camp adult leader. Just grab and go anywhere without worrying about banging it while mountain biking / backpacking / rock climbing, or getting it wet while snorkeling / kayaking.

Comments about Stylus TOUGH TG-3 Digital Camera (Red):

We bought this camera specifically for trips to places where beach and pool activities will be all day affairs. It was this or buy an equally expensive case for my DSLR. Between the two choices I felt like this was the perfect alternative. Also, sometimes, I just don't feel like my expensive rig is safe in the hotel room when it wont fit in the room safe while we are out all day playing poolside or at the beach. Now I wont have to wonder, or worry.

I've since accessorized this camera with a 32gb card, three different colored float straps, the silicone case, the mini beach bag (mini is no lie) kit that came with a flexible leg tripod, the grey Tough camera case and 4 batts and a charger. I wanted to be sure I was prepared for anything. I wish I could get a lens cap, or at the very least, a UV filter to protect the lens. Oh, the Olympus App (Android) works flawlessly on my Galaxy Note 4 with this camera. I might even get a selfie stick too. Then I can really break free from the phone on vacation.

All and all the pics it takes are great. I wanted something I could leave on Auto and hand to anyone and have fun with all day/night long. With the extra batts and 32gb card I should be able to go all week.

Pics are vibrant and very low noise outside in full sun and colors are rich and really pop. I have not played with all the features or pre-set modes yet. From my test shots, I probably wont need to.

Video is good too, except when zooming. The lens motor is really loud. That is on quiet scenes. This is not going to be a big issue for me as I will dub in my own music or sound effects during post production if need be. If you are videoing a party scene or activities around a pool and there is any substantial background noise or music it wont be an issue.

I actually tried another brand underwater camera from a big box store that was half as much but it felt so small in my hands. I really prefer the feel of this camera much more. The silicone case does detract from the good looks but it will be a welcome addition with wet hands and can only add to the durability so it is not a big deal.

I researched underwater cameras for a couple weeks straight and no matter what site I went to one camera kept coming up as #1 or at the very least, the top 2 or 3. So far this camera lives up to that reputation.

I do not regret this purchase at all, and would recommend it to anyone that has the same needs as we do and the desire to capture all those special memories without fear of hurting a much more expensive DSLR.

Speaking of the purchase....I am so glad I bought this camera from B&H Photo. Not only did the camera arrive in record time (3 days) but I really appreciate having them stand behind this product. My friends use B&H all the time so I didn't blink an eye when the time came to place the order.

If you are in or around water, or are into a lot of thrills and want more than a video camera for your memories, this is the camera to get.

                    Rob
