Good hard drives. Not for atomos

        By Jsharpphoto

Comments about OWC / Other World Computing 120GB Mercury Electra 6G Solid State Drive:

I have two of these Electra drives in my mac book home. I bought a few more to use in my atomos ninja. It lists the Mercury extremes as compatible drives, so I figured the Mercury elctras would be the same, since they are so similar. Nope. The pins on the electras are a little to short to function the the atomos drive caddy. Had to exchange them for more expensive versions with the same specs. Lame.

Great SSD! I just received it today with enclosure and installed OSX via USB3.0. I made it as my primary drive and installed apps to it. Opening the applications is super fast.

Comments about OWC / Other World Computing 120GB Mercury Electra 6G Solid State Drive:

I've only had this SSD installed in my Mac Pro Tower for a few days, but already I love it. I can shut down and restart in 32 seconds (timed it with a stopwatch!). The SSD was installed in the second optical bay, connected to the motherboard and power supply with a tangle of cables, which required a fair amount of disassembly of my Mac Pro (maybe 30 minutes of work). That's my only (minor) complaint and it's got nothing to do with the drive itself. I just installed the operating system and applications on this, and altogether they take up less than 20 GB of space, leaving plenty of room for OS X's virtual memory. Photoshop and other programs start up very quickly. I have all my data and images on SATA hard drives installed in the regular drive bays. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't upgrade those to SSDs as well.
