The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens from Nikon is an all-in-one zoom lens capable of shooting wide angle to super telephoto focal lengths. This lens has a zoom range of 18-300mm, which provides the 35mm focal length equivalent of 27-450mm in the DX format, making it useful in a wide range of shooting situations.

The lens utilizes a Silent Wave Motor for quick, quiet auto focusing for photo and video as well as internal focusing that keeps the lens design compact. Also, Vibration Reduction technology optically stabilizes the image to reduce the effects of camera shake and movement providing the equivalent of up to 4 additional shutter speed stops.

Helping with image quality are three aspherical and three extra-low dispersion glass elements that will minimize aberrations and Nikon's Super Integrated Lens Coating which reduces ghosting and flare while maximizing contrast. The lens has 7 rounded diaphragm blades for smooth out-of-focus areas and a 67mm front filter thread.

The Silent Wave Motor autofocus system uses ultrasonic vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
The Vibration Reduction image stabilization improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake for up to 4.0 stops of blur-free handheld shooting.
Maximum magnification of 0.32x and a minimum focusing distance of 1.6'.
Lens construction consists of 16 elements in 12 groups.
Works on FX-format cameras in DX crop mode.
Utilizes 7 rounded diaphragm blades for smooth out-of-focus areas.
The three extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements help by minimizing the effects of chromatic aberrations and maintaining optimal sharpness and contrast of the lens.
Three aspherical lens elements reduce coma and other aberrations as well as correct the distortion in addition to keeping lenses smaller and lighter.
Super Integrated Coating nearly eliminates ghosting and reduces flaring, maintaining a crisp image throughout the frame.
A-M switch locks the focus ring during autofocus while still allowing manual focusing when the ring is turned.

I recently read reviews on the Nikkor DX 18–300mm and was intrigued, especially with the f/3.5–6.3G ED VR because of the weight. I have been using a Nikon D7000 with an AFS DX Nikkor 18-135mm lens and a Nikkor AF-S DX VR 55–200mm supplementary lens. The DX 18–300mm provides the range of zoom I desire and I thought it might allow me to carry only one lens (or only one camera), and would be light enough with the D7000 to carry about hours at a time.

The purchase was a great decision. I find the lens very adequate for everything I do – from flower close-ups to the maximum zoom levels I occasionally require. The lens is extremely sharp, even under relatively low-light. As a preference, I do not use a flash very often. I prefer to up the ISO, and even with bright background light, as through a window, I get very crisp detail in darker foreground subjects (even at ISO 3200) without any noise.

The VR works exceptionally well – I get surprisingly clear images with 1/10th of a second shutter speed, hand-held and at maximum zoom level. Another feature I also like very much is the 18mm Lock which keeps the lens stable during inadvertent movements and prevents it from sliding back and forth as you lift it, lower it, etc.

I highly recommend this lens to those who want to carry a single camera, or who are tired of interrupting everything to change lenses, especially on windy, dusty or rainy days.

Well worth the money, although it should come with a carrying pouch and a lens hood.

This is a good travel lense with wider coverage. I rate this at three star comaparing the excess price you pay for reaching extra 100mm in which you do not reach the expectation. If you want to get crispy pictures at 300mm this may not be the right lense for you.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

I bought this lens primarily for vacation. I will take this lens and my Nikkor 35mm f/2.f/and Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 prime lenses. The NIKKOR 18-300mm 3.5-6 has very good image quality. Much better than my Tamron 18-270mm PZD f/3.5-6.3 lens. However my main workhorse is the Nikkor 18-140mm, which is a tad sharper in many, but not all instances, plus it has almost a whole f stop advantage. And my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 for portraits and low light situations. Of course all of these zoom lenses suffer with some level of distortion, that needs to be corrected with good software. The only real drawback for me is the the slow aperture(6.0 at 105mm), forcing me to use higher ISO and exposure compensation numbers on the Nikon D7100. For concerts & graduations, I will stick with my Nikkor 70-300mm VR. For vacations, and those occasions where you only want to carry one lens, I highly recommend the Nikkor AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm. Thanks to B&H Photo for sending me an email about the big price drop. I was purchasing a refurbished unit, and now I have a brand new lens with a 5 year warranty for the SAME $[$]. PRICE as the refurbished lens.

I'm really happy with this lens & its versatility. Of course I can take great landscape shots, but also some nice portrait & close ups as well with some nice bokeh. Yes, I do have to raise the ISO because it's not as fast as my 35mm f/1.8 but it's no big whoop for me; the photos are nice & sharp enough for my needs. Even better, I got it at the sale price--thanks B&H!

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

I bought this lens together with a Nikon D7200 and they create a perfect match. With the great sensitivity of the D7200 there is no need to bring another lens unless you do specialized work. Even indoors most shots are great without a flash and it is certainly nice to have that huge range for close ups or that animal you do not want to chase away when moving in. Also macro mode is excellent. I reduce 1 star just because I expect reduced durability due to the plastic that is used on this lens. I would like to see for example a metal thread for filters since the threads of the plastic can be worn out quickly. On the other hand use of plastic save weight which adds to this lens being a companion that you will not mind bringing along.

This is the first time I've been disappointed by a Nikon product ... and I haven't even put the lens on my camera yet. I suppose part of it is my own fault. I assumed there would be a lens hood in the box. What a surprise when I unpacked things and found there was none. Every other Nikkor I have purchased has come with a hood. And the other lenses listed at the bottom of the page for this lens come with hoods. I cannot understand why there would not be a hood. It's necessary to shield from extraneous light. It's very good to have should the camera and lens get bumped. $ for a lens and no hood included? I never thought Nikon would cheap out on anything. But in this case, it did.

This lens was purchased as a replacement for the 18-105mm Nikon and the
55-200mm Nikon. The 18-300mm AF-DX Nikon is a perfect fit for my Nikon D-7100.
This lens appears to be sharp through out the frame. And the zoom range seems
to be very tight without slippage. I am very pleased with this purchase.

I recently purchased this lens in time for a wedding as my Sigma 24mm-70mm f2.8 was just recently damaged. It was very easy to use and the clarity was on par with other Nikon lenses. I didn't need to change the lens for the entire event, and although the f is much higher than the previous lens I would have used, I supplemented the lens with a sb900 flash for the lower light situations. I did end up adjusting the ISO where I normally would not have for dynamic situations. I felt the lens was light and didn't overburden me with weight. Overall, I very much like this lens and I think it will be seeing a lot more use on my Nikon D300.

This lens was purchased for my wife to use on her D3300 while we were traveling. It is everything we had expected: convenient (no need to swap lenses to cover various zoom ranges), sharp focusing, and good performance even in low light conditions. With today's sensors (and with the D3300 in auto-ISO mode) she got wonderful images indoors at museums as well as at outdoor locations.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

I am an amateur photographer. My subjects vary widely. This lens fully replaces the lens that came with my Nikon D3300. It is light weight compared to its siblings, very capable zoom. The manual is short sweet and to the point covering all the things to keep this lens safe and avoid hazardous photography. This lens is surprisingly capable for macro shots.

I do wish the lens cap came with a lanyard option. I was constantly groping myself for a pocket, even for quick shoots, time consuming and causing me to miss shots. I purchased an after market one.

This lens is significantly more expensive then its siblings. Yes it is lighter weight and has more range, but not sure it is enough to charge so much more.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

Nature, landscapes, sports, wildlife, architectural, family, travel, all in a sharp, clear, fast, lightweight and compact lens, with very good range, nice bokeh and night shots at high ISO, excellent VR and color quality. I can't say yet about durability, but it seems well built. Creeps if you point it downward holding just the camera body, what I consider normal in a zoom lens this range. NC filter is a must. Really satisfied, but why not hood and bag, Nikon?

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

It's really amazing that Nikon has created a lens with a range of 18-300mm that weighs only 2 ounces more than the 18-140mm variety. With kids who like to move around, not having to change lenses is a godsend. Focus is fast and sharp. The lens IS a bit stiff - you need two fingers to rotate the zoom lens. Very happy with the purchase.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

Excellent upgrade from my 18-200 VR. I hike and boat with it on a lightweight body (D3100) for mixed nature, wildlife, architectural, sports and landscape photography with minimal carry weight.

Focus is fast and VR works well, but I wish it was a stop or two faster aperture (of course this would increase weight). Nikon could provide a hood and bag for that kind of money. They also might consider a forward tripod mount; the body socket balances poorly and strains a light DX frame.

Zoom lock is a nice touch, but so far mine has not 'crept' under its own weight (as did the 18-200).

The 67mm filter mount is cheaper to outfit than the 72mm required for the 18-200, but I saw minor vignetting with a standard circular polarizer; consider a thin-profile polarizer, and don't stack filters.

As noted elsewhere there's substantial barrel distortion at the wide end, this needs to be fixed digitally; I haven't yet tried so I can't comment how easy or effective it is.

Dropped only once, bad enough to waste aforementioned polarizing filter, but lens seems fine. So far (about 1,000 frames) so good.

The 18x300 Nikon lens is a welcome replacement for my 18x105 lens and my 55x300 lens. The convenience of having one lens that will effectively replace two lens means less weight and no lost time in changing lens. On extended trips with widely varying requirements it is great. One less lens to carry on hikes and climbs.
