The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens from Nikon is an all-in-one zoom lens capable of shooting wide angle to super telephoto focal lengths. This lens has a zoom range of 18-300mm, which provides the 35mm focal length equivalent of 27-450mm in the DX format, making it useful in a wide range of shooting situations.

The lens utilizes a Silent Wave Motor for quick, quiet auto focusing for photo and video as well as internal focusing that keeps the lens design compact. Also, Vibration Reduction technology optically stabilizes the image to reduce the effects of camera shake and movement providing the equivalent of up to 4 additional shutter speed stops.

Helping with image quality are three aspherical and three extra-low dispersion glass elements that will minimize aberrations and Nikon's Super Integrated Lens Coating which reduces ghosting and flare while maximizing contrast. The lens has 7 rounded diaphragm blades for smooth out-of-focus areas and a 67mm front filter thread.

The Silent Wave Motor autofocus system uses ultrasonic vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
The Vibration Reduction image stabilization improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake for up to 4.0 stops of blur-free handheld shooting.
Maximum magnification of 0.32x and a minimum focusing distance of 1.6'.
Lens construction consists of 16 elements in 12 groups.
Works on FX-format cameras in DX crop mode.
Utilizes 7 rounded diaphragm blades for smooth out-of-focus areas.
The three extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements help by minimizing the effects of chromatic aberrations and maintaining optimal sharpness and contrast of the lens.
Three aspherical lens elements reduce coma and other aberrations as well as correct the distortion in addition to keeping lenses smaller and lighter.
Super Integrated Coating nearly eliminates ghosting and reduces flaring, maintaining a crisp image throughout the frame.
A-M switch locks the focus ring during autofocus while still allowing manual focusing when the ring is turned.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

Getting ready for a trip to the Okavango Delta in Botswana. I have a Nikon 1 V2 and wanted a longer lens than the 10-100mm that I currently have for wildlife shooting. The 1 NIKKOR VR 70-300mm seemed like the perfect solution. But as anyone knows who also wants this lens, it just isn't available. I leave in early November and cannot wait any longer. It was available for a short time back in July, but is now either backordered or 'new item available for pre-order'. Nikon, of course, doesn't know when it will be available. I've been a Nikon user for over 40 years. They never seem to know when products will be available but usually works out to be sometime before Christmas. I guess their products magically appear one day. So I began to look for alternatives. The FT-1 allows using current FX and DX lenses on the Nikon 1 cameras. At first I thought I would use it with a 70-300mm G lens I have but do not use anymore. But the size and weight became an issue. It is not a small lens. Then I thought about using my wife's 18-200mm DX VRII lens. Decided that wouldn't go over very well with her (her favorite lens on her D3200). I have a 28-300mm FX G lens, but that will stay on my D800. The N1V2 is basically a backup that I hope to use a longer lens and for instant video. That brings us to the Nikon 18-300mm DX G. The size and weight are identical to my wife's 18-200mm DX G. Big plus. I already have a 67mm polarizer for the 70-300mm that I can use on the 18-300mm so that would also be a savings. The cost of the N1 70-300mm is $. + $ I would have to spend to get a 62mm polarizer and maybe another $ for the tripod attachment. That takes the total for a new N1 70-300mm lens package to $ total. The 18-300mm DX G is $ + for the FT-1 adapter (I already have the polarizer) for a total of $ total. It actually works out cheaper than purchasing the N1 70-300mm. Even minus the cost of the polarizer for the 70-300mm the cost is only $ more for the 18-300mm package. Some other things to consider. The 70-300mm N1 lens is 189-810mm FX equivalent. The 18-300mm DX is 48.6-810mm FX equivalent (greater range). The N1 lens f/4.5-5.6 versus the DX f/3.5-6.3. It is a full stop faster at the 48mm and only about a stop slower at 300mm. But to me the 48mm bottom means more to me than a stop at the 300mm end. Size wise, the N1 lens is 4.2 inches long. The 18-300mm plus the FT-1 works out to just under 5 inches (Nikon measures from the front of the lens to the mounting surface). That is only ¾ of an inch difference. The weight of the N1 lens is 19.4 ounces, the DX lens plus the FT-1 comes in at 24.6 ounces. Just only 5.2 ounces more. There is the added benefit we can use the 18-300mm DX lens on our DX format cameras (my wife's D3200 and if we ever have use them a D200 and D70). I have a sneaking suspicion that my wife will take the 18-300mm to replace her 18-200mm. But I can live with using the 18-200mm (48.8-540mm FX) on the N1V2.I have done some quick tests on the 18-300mm FT-1 combo. The pictures look fine. I used the D3200 and the N1V2 to test the combo and the added range is huge even over the 18-200mm. The only thing I wish they would fix is the single focus point using the FT-1 (4 stars). I can't believe it isn't an easy firmware change, but knowing Nikon, it probably won't happen. I can live with it. Just take pictures like we did in the old days. The performance on the N1V2 in low light wasn't that great (also 4 stars). The camera had a hard time focusing. But I read reviews where they say the same for the N1 70-300mm. I believe it is a limitation of the camera. Maybe the single focus point may be an issue too, but I can always focus manually. Be aware there isn't lens hood included with this lens (2216) which is a first for me on Nikkor Lenses (4 stars). I usually don't use them, but it was always nice to have anyway. In conclusion, I am happy with the purchase. I got two lens for the price of one (DX and CX) and it can be used across platforms F mount and CX mount. No waiting and I am ready for my trip with equipment I wanted.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

Before purchasing this lens, I have owned the Nikon 18-55 mm and 55-300 mm lens combo on my Nikon D5100/7100. I have tried to replace them with Nikon's 18-300 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens but returned it because it cost more, weighed more but it did not improve image quality or focus speed. The latest 18-300 f/3.5-6.3 totally changed the picture. I got sharper picture in 200-300 mm zoom range compare to the other 2 choices and it is lighter and smaller. It also focuses faster than the Nikon 55-300 mm lens. No, this is not the best lens for the low light and action photos. But it performs very well in many other areas.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

For years I used the Nikkor 18-200 VR lens; appreciating that I didn't need to carry additional lenses, and could still get the pictures I desired. After taking thousands of pictures in harsh environments, and having to have the workhorse lens and DSLR DX body cleaned and serviced by Nikon, I realized it was time to retire them to backup status, and step up to newer versions.
After reviewing the latest Nikon products, I confidently purchased the new D7100, and followed that with the Nikkor 18-300 VR lens . The 'bigger' lens is actually smaller and lighter than the old one. It is not as well built, but this time I added the "Drops & Spills Warranty". As before, the picture quality is excellent, the longer lens just adds the length I had always wished for with the 18-200. I have found nothing that is less than what I expect from a Nikkor lens.
I asked the B&H specialist for comments on which UV filter I should purchase, and he found the perfect compromise between price and features, with an emphasis on quality. I bought the B + W 67mm XS-Pro UV MRC-Nano 010M. It is exactly what I expected, at a good price.
As always, B&H listened, advised, and expeditiously shipped my new equipment, I am again a happy photographer!

I love the versatility of lens. Now I can carry one instead of several without missing a shot. Very quick response; sharp images. It will take some getting used to since my 70-210 Nikon was a pull in/out zoom and this is a turn zoom, but that's for me to get used to. Love it. Price is up there but then again, I'm getting a Nikon.

I have used the same lens in a 18-140. I really liked the lens but wanted more distance without carrying 2 lens. This lens was only 2 ounces more weight and more than doubled the range. I have taken a few pictures and I have been impressed at the distance focus but I have not put it through a good test. I am going on a vacation next month and I will have a better review at that point.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

So far I have taken great landscapes, a few long distance bird shots and multiple portraits in our church studio. All have been extremely sharp and require very little color adjustment. The lens is light to carry and not much heavier than the 18-200mm it replaces. The VRII is wonderful and I have not had focus issues.

The one negative I have is Nikon labeling this an 18-300mm lens. At 18mm it is spot on with other lenses in my possession. I have taken multiple photos on a tripod using my 70-300 and this 18-300. The photos with this lens look about like a 270mm shot with the 70-300. I do believe they are fudging on the 300mm.

The focus motor is quiet and acceptably fast. I would love to give it 5 stars. It is definitely a keeper but because of the 300 mm issue I cannot rate it higher than a 4.5

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

I am a hobbyist and use a Nikon D7000. I had a 70-300, 18-105, and a 40mm which I sold to finance this purchase. The 18 - 300mm solved my biggest complaint....I no longer have to carry a bag filled with lenses around town. I read many reviews and many were harsh ... But I am very happy with this purchase.
It takes great photos and is very versatile.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

While a bit on the heavy side as an everyday lens, it more than makes up for the added weight with its unparalleled versatility. This makes it one of the best choices for use when you simply don't know which lens you will need next. Besides, it is still lighter than the lenses of less versatility I have used in the past.

Excellent VR helps to make up for the lack of lens speed and helps tremendously when fully zoomed in. While the VR will not help with active subject movement, this will usually only be an issue in the poorest of lighting conditions where shutter speed is too low.

Excellent bokeh, especially when zoomed in.

Overall an excellent choice, made all the more so paralleled with the D7100 camera that I have it mated to. The combination meets and/or exceeds all my expectations.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

Bought this lens for my wife to use on her Nikon D7000 when we travel. Gives her a very wide zoom range, in a light lens, eliminating the need to carry other lens and make frequent changes. The D7000's high ISO capability somewhat offsets the slower lens speed (f6.3) compared to Nikon's other 18-300 lens (which is faster but heavier). Package doesn't include a lens hood, which is a hassle, as it needs to be ordered separately.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

I purchased this to replace an 8 year old 18-200. The only thing with this lens is that I need to fine-tune the auto-focus with my D7000. (This is probably more on the D7000 side of the issue.) It now produces sharp pictures. One nice thing about this lens is that at 300mm, it can actually do some macro photos. The auto-focus distance seems shorter than it's advertised for. I don't encounter any lens creep so I haven't used the 'lock' at all.

This lens is great, all I need is this one lens to take most all of my pictures. Focuses fast and the images are very sharp.
The zoom is really very good compared to May of the other zoom lenses available. I highly recommend this for the intermediate
photographer who does not want to carry a lot of different lenses.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens:

This is a new lens for Nikon, upon first look the smaller size, lighter weight sounds good. When opening the box I found that there was no lens hood, no lens bag and the twist cap on the rear has been replaced with a cheap push on cap.

The lighter weight is the best reason for getting this lens, I noticed the auto focus was not as quick as the older 18-300, at 300mm it is f6.3 this is a small issue.

Over all the lens is good, BUT it is very clear Nikon is looking to save money by cutting back.
