This holds it securely while the thumbscrew clip holds the object. The nylon clip is extremely versatile with foam jaw inserts for delicate materials, a holding notch that fits the outer rim of diffusers and reflectors, an arched recess that allows for the gripping of round objects. The thumbscrew activated clip is also very strong and precise as well as being able to open up to 1". Additionally, the Plamp II is lightweight at 7.9 ounces.

Loc-Line jointed segments allow you to adjust the length of your Plamp, even allowing the use of optional extensions
Tripod clamp has an adjustable spring tension for your preference
Large diameter segments allow for the joining of multiple Plamps in a series
It will hold 12" reflectors and diffusers in any position, 20" reflectors in a vertical position or slight cantilever, and for anything larger than 20" two Plamps are recommended

This is a very clever tool to use for macro work. It will adapt to many unique situations where a third hand is helpful. I don't know how I got along without it all this time.

I use it to hold items to photograph as well as reflector cards for macro. I attach it to my tripod leg or whatever is close by. I love the fact that I can select how much pressure to use when holding something delicate.

Comments about Wimberley The Plamp II:

Use it for macro with my 60 and 105. Using it attached to tripod leg is not a good idea when doing really close work. Tripod vibrate so does everything else. This is just being constuctive, be gentle. I think the product is great for floral macro.

I LOVE the Plamp II...with one exception

Comments about Wimberley The Plamp II:

These work really well. My only complaint is that the clamps that are made to attach to the tripod legs are too large to hold to the base of my tripod (the bottom of the legs when they are fully extended). I use a Manfrotto, so I'm not sure if this is the same with other tripods or not.

A little pricey, but packs up well. While I feel like this is like having a extra hand, it does still seem to work best with mirror lock-up. The subject may still move slightly in really strong winds, but overall a handy device.

So many uses in macro=holding the object or whatever the object is on to stabilize it, holding reflectors, wind blocks, small light sources....the list goes on.
Well made and lightweight as a bonus.
                      Pricy though.

Comments about Wimberley The Plamp II:

This is the only commercially available device I found for the express purpose of holding a flower or leaf steady. In addition to holding the subject steady, it can also reposition the subject for a better camera angle. The Plamp can also be used for any other "third hand" need, such as holding a reflector. Though this device sounds like a great idea, in practice it has limitations. For one, even if the stem is kept still, the flower petals will still move if it's breezy enough. Even the Plamp's articulating arm is sensitive to a strong breeze. There is also an important precaution to take when using this device. You need to use either a remote shutter release or your camera's self-timer. Wimberley warns that even mirror slap can vibrate the articulating arm. I thought that was an exaggeration at first, but for certain the slightest touch to the camera does set off vibrations through the Plamp (unless the Plamp is clamped to something other than your tripod).
