The Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens is a wide-angle zoom lens featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture to provide consistent performance throughout the zoom range. The optical design incorporates three aspherical elements, including one large-diameter aspherical element, as well as two UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements to minimize chromatic aberrations and contribute to high edge-to-edge sharpness and resolution. A fluorine coating has also been applied to the front and rear lens surfaces to reduce flare and ghosting for maintained color neutrality and image contrast.

Benefitting working in difficult lighting conditions, an Optical Image Stabilizer has been integrated into the lens design to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to an effective four shutter speed steps. For fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance, a ring-type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) AF motor is employed and benefits from an internal focusing design to maintain the overall length of the lens during use. Full-time manual focus override can also be utilized for fine-tuned focusing precision as closely as 11" throughout the zoom range.

When paired with an optional Protect filter, this lens also exhibits a dust- and water-resistant construction to enable its use in inclement conditions.

Wide-angle zoom L-series lens is suitable for use on both full-frame and APS-C sensors (where it provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 25.6-56mm) and features a constant f/4 maximum aperture for consistent performance throughout the zoom range.

A fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear lens surfaces to reduce ghosting for maintained image contrast and color fidelity.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops for improved usability in difficult lighting conditions.
A ring-type USM AF motor, along with an internal-focusing design, realizes fast and accurate focusing performance.
Full-time manual focus permits critical focusing precision, even in AF mode.
When an optional 77mm Protect filter is used, the lens realizes dust- and water-resistance for use in trying environmental conditions.

I have been using this lens for the past two months now. I have taken a lot of pictures with this lens. I thought it is time I share my thoughts. The lens is well built but all plastic. For a metal loving guy this is definitely a minus. I have owned the Canon 17-40mm f4 before. Optically this lens is far sharper than the 17-40mm f4. For landscape uses this lens is great as it is especially sharper in the corners. It is not a perfect lens though as the corners are still not super sharp if you are a pixel peeper. The lack of chromatic aberrations is actually the secret strength of this new lens. The IS works fine but I think it only provides a 2 stop advantage. It is a nice feature nonetheless. The price is reasonable for the results it delivers. May be Canon was able to cut costs by making this lens all plastic. I currently also own the 16-35mm 2.8L II. In the center I say they are equally sharp. In the corners the new lens is sharper. The 2.8 cost $ more but you get better build quality and 2.8. All in all the 16-35mm f4 IS is a nice new lens. It would be nice if Canon could make a 14-24mm 2.8L with all metal construction.

While this lens is nicely build it fails to perform in on key element…sharpness. I tested the lens with mirror lockup at every aperture with IS on and off. Unfortunately it is not nearly as sharp and the images have considerably less micro contrast than my Canon 24 1.4 II and 35 1.4. I was extremely disappointed considering the glowing reviews that this glass had garnered. It is still far from replacing even a slightly dated prime.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This lens is slightly better then (already excellent) EF 17-40mm f/4 L in every way plus it has Image stabilization system which may be very useful. In real life the difference is not really that noticeable. It is very good tool for professional architectural/real estate photography.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

Shot architecture and real estate with the 17-40mm for the last couple years. Purchased this recently and I'm glad I did. Kills my 17-40mm on edge sharpness... and sharpness in general. Edge to edge even at more open apertures. Out performs my friends 16-35 f/2.8 even. The IS is an added bonus. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a wide angle.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I have tested this lens against the Canon 17-40, and can tell you that this lens is considerably better. It is sharper in the center and corners with excellent control of (CA) Chromatic Aberration aka. Color Fringing.

While this lens is fantastic for Landscape and Interiors, its Image Stabilization works great for wide-angle video also.

If this lens is on your short list, just buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I have had many of Canon's wide angles and also own the TS-E 24/3.5L MkII which is fantastic. However, the 17-40mm lens left something to be desired in terms of sharpness, especially in the corners. This new lens is an enormous improvement in every respect and clearly the sharpest wide angle zoom I have owned so far. The diaphragm is also great is it has enough blades to produce a beautiful sunburst star when needed (when stopped down).

The new 16-35 f/4L IS definitely exceeded my exceptions and is a significant upgrade from the 17-40 I carried and really liked for years. As you've read in other reviews, sharpness is greatly improved especially in the corners (full frame). It's a bit larger and heavier than the 17-40 but not by too much.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This is lens is under the radar for most pro shooters. I'd read about it's edge-to-edge sharpness and decided to test drive. After a few weeks of use I find it easily out-performs it's more expensive big brother. In fact it's not even close! Everything I've read about it's sharpness holds true and the IS function is a huge plus. Best of all is the cost-effectiveness; it's much cheaper (and several years newer) than the f/2.8 model. Besides the price, sharpness and IS functions, other pluses are it's smaller size, more common 77mm filter thread and smaller lens hood, making it much less conspicuous. With the already outstanding perfomance in pro Canon DSLR bodies, which I would guess will only get better in the future, many pros or serious photogs will find they simply don't need the added expense of a one-stop-faster wide zoom lens. Kudos to Canon for this lens!

I upgraded from the canon 17-40 f4L. I compared test results to both that and my canon 10-22mm. This new lens has far less distortion at corners fully wide and equal or better overall sharpness. It could have a stronger build, and the plastic hood seems lower quality than others, hence the 4 stars. But this will be my go-to lens for wide angle landscapes.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

This wide angle lens delivers. While I usually use a tripod, it is possible to hand hold this lens because of the image stabilization. The lens has a nice feel. I expect to enjoy using it for many years.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I rented this before buying (lensrentals com) and really enjoyed it, so I have bought it with no regrets. It's going to be on my 5D Mk III very often, and may become my 'walkabout' lens (although I'll keep my EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II close at hand). Great lens! And the difference between 24mm (short end of my 24-70) and 16mm (short end of this lens) is very dramatic. Love it!

Amazing lens. Its much sharper in the corners than the 2.8L II. Use caution putting filters on, it has plastic filter threads.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

With a passion to shoot architecture and landscape photography a wide angle lens is a must. This Canon 16-35mm IS F4L doesn't dissapoint. The sharpness from this lens is wonderful, it is useable wide open at f4 and improvements are hard to recognise as you move up to f5.6, f8, f11 etc. It really is a sharp lens and the resolving detail is just amazing - the fine details are really well defined. The build quality is great with high quality materials used and the IS is a wonderful addition to be able to handhold shots in low light etc. Very fast to focus and quite too. Would highly recommend this lens for architecture and landscape photography.

I had read that this lens was superior to the f/2.8 version, and it is!! It is a true wide angle zoom on full frame and on APS-C it provides about 25-56mm.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I am very glad I purchased this lens. I was initially going to purchase the 17-40 f/4L wide angle lens by canon but read a lot of reviews stating that this lens was better than both the cheaper 17-40 and the much more expensive 16-35 f/2.8L. I am very glad that I spent the extra $ to get a very sharp lens, no issues with darkening. Wide angle distortion is minimal and expected with this type of lens. I would buy again. This lens was slightly heavier than I expected (it is heavier than my 24-105mm f/4L) but the weight feels appropriate attached to my Canon 6D, it's not too heavy. Someone who uses the stock neck strap with this lens may have a sore neck/shoulders by the end of the day. I did buy a B+W UV filter to protect the front element and to finish the weatherproofing.

Comments about Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens:

I don't want to bore you with all the technical aspects of this lens. There are enough of them online. I bought the lens for landscape and part-time street photography and image resolution is incredible. It's sharp to all corners from its low focal length to its max. I walked around town with my 5D Mark iii and my shoulder thanked me. Feels as if it was made for Mark iii or any other DSLR. The usual Canon quality applies. Yes, it's plastic but its 'good' plastic with a solid feel. Zoom and manual focus is smooth. I'd actually like some more resistance but it's not a deal breaker. Auto focus is the quickest I've experienced: see it, shoot it. Very quiet too. I thought I'd miss the wide open aperture but I really don't with this lens. You're not going to get the glorious bokeh of the 50,85, or even the 135 but you get a pleasant out of focus blur. Bear in mind, this lens wasn't meant for that but you'll be pleasantly surprised. IS? Nice feature but I've never had IS at this focal length in my other lens and I can't tell if it's any different. It was between this and it's 2.8 older brother and after seeing the MFT charts and taking my own pics, I'm glad I bought it and you'll be too.
