The carbon black VAIO Duo 13 SVD13233CXB 13.3" Multi-Touch Convertible Ultrabook Computer features a unique surf slider design that allows you to transition between tablet and laptop modes with ease. The VAIO Duo 13 provides the benefits of both a tablet and an Ultrabook computer in one unique package.

The 13.3" capacitive touchscreen supports multi-touch input as well as digitizer input, which is why Sony included a digitizer pen with the VAIO Duo 13. The display has a 16:9 aspect ratio and a Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution, which is supported by integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400. The resolution allows you to play back 1080p Full HD content without upscaling or letterboxing. You can also output video to an external display via the HDMI port.

The system is powered by a dual-core 4th generation Haswell 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5-4200U processor. It also has 8GB of 1600 MHz LPPDDR3 RAM, a 128GB solid state drive, a 2-in-1 media card reader, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0+HS, near field communication (NFC), an integrated 2-megapixel front-facing webcam, an 8-megapixel rear camera powered by Exmor RS for PC, and an integrated microphone. There are also built-in speakers with Intel High Definition Audio and ClearAudio+ technology.

Windows 8.1 is the installed operating system. Windows 8.1 improves the user experience of Windows 8 with several additions and changes. The Start button returns, but has two limited core functions. A left click takes you to the redesigned Start screen featuring tiles that update in real-time. A right click brings up an advanced menu where you can access the Device Manager, Control Panel and more. You will also be able to boot directly to the traditional desktop screen instead of the Windows 8.1 Start screen. Windows 8.1 provides a unique user experience that differs from previous versions of Windows.

VAIO Duo 13

Dual-Core 4th-Gen Haswell Intel Core i5 Performance
The VAIO Duo 13 houses a 4th generation Haswell Intel Core i5-4200U processor. Its dual cores can reach a stock speed of 1.6 GHz. The processor can also be overclocked up to 2.6 GHz, thanks to Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. With a dedicated 3MB L3 cache, 8GB of 1600 MHz LPDDR3 RAM, and Intel Hyper-Threading technology, you'll be able to multitask quickly and efficiently. The low voltage Haswell processor also makes it possible for the VAIO Duo 13 to squeeze up to 10 hours runtime out of a single charge (battery life may vary depending on usage).
13.3" Capacitive Touchscreen
The 13.3" capacitive touchscreen features support for multi-touch gestures incorporated in Windows 8.1. The screen also has a 16:9 aspect ratio and features a Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution, so you'll be able to watch 1080p HD videos without having to upscale the content. The touchscreen also has a digitizer, which means you can use the included Sony Active Pen as a stylus. If you require a larger screen, you can output to an external display via the HDMI port.
Surf Slider Design
The unique Surf Slider design allows you to transition between tablet and laptop modes. Interact with the tablet by using the stylus or your fingers on the capacitive touchscreen. When you need the feel of tactile keys, simply slide the screen back to reveal the keyboard.
Digitizer Stylus
The included digitizer stylus delivers precise performance allowing you to write, draw and tap the touchscreen with ease. With every stroke, the digitizer stylus allows you to adjust line weight, brush size and more by pressing harder or softer with the pen. When the pen is near the screen, the touch sensors are turned off so you can maintain a comfortable writing position, even laying your palm on the screen. Two pen tips are included, allowing you to simulate working with a variety of traditional art and design materials.
Full Connectivity
For Internet access, you can connect wirelessly with 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. You can use Bluetooth 4.0+HS to wirelessly connect to all your peripherals, such as a wireless mouse or keyboard. The HDMI port allows you to output video to an HDTV.
ArtRage Studio Pro Software
ArtRage Studio Pro contains all the tools of ArtRage Studio, such as oils, watercolors and inking pens which allow you to produce natural looking artwork on your computer. The version on the VAIO Duo 13 is ideal for artists who need to edit their work in more depth, supporting Photoshop compatible filters, real world color blending, post-spray editable stickers and more.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 12
Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 is included with the Sony VAIO Duo 13. Organize, edit, and create your photos to share via print, the Internet, social media networks, and more. New effects include Zoom Burst, which brings dramatic action to your photos; Photo Puzzle, which gives a fun puzzle effect; and Old Photo Restore, which helps you fix an old or worn photo.
Near Field Communication (NFC)
Quickly exchange messages, photos, MP3 files and URLs with other compatible NFC devices. See the same website that's on your VAIO Duo 13 from your smartphone. Even switch from listening to music on your desktop computer to your VAIO Duo 13 and back again. With NFC (Near Field Communication), it all happens by simply tapping compatible devices together on the touch icon. It's instant, requires zero setup and is just that easy. Please note that both devices must have NFC in order to utilize this feature.
Two Cameras
The VAIO Duo 13 has dual cameras. It has a traditional 2-megapixel front-facing camera powered by a Exmor R sensor, which can be used for video chatting, even in low lighting. It also has an 8-megapixel rear camera powered by a Sony Exmor RS sensor, which can take high definition photos.
ClearAudio+
ClearAudio+ combines Sony's unique sound processing technologies like xLOUD, Clear Phase and S-Force Front Surround Sound for clear and bold sound. With ClearAudio+, you'll hear dynamic bass and soaring highs with less distortion for an immersive listening experience.

Windows 8.1

The Return of the Start Button
After many requests from Windows users, the Start button makes its triumphant return in Windows 8.1. While it may not be exactly the same as its predecessor in Windows 7, the Start button has two core functions. A left click on the Start button will take you to the Windows 8.1 Start screen featuring live tiles. A right click on the Start button brings up an advanced menu where you can access the Device Manager, Control Panel, Network options and more.
Boot Directly to the Desktop
Windows 8.1 gives you the choice of booting to the Windows 8.1 Start screen with live tiles or booting to the familiar desktop screen of Windows 7. Users can also boot directly into an app or app view if they choose to.
Seamless Integration of Multi-Touch Gestures
Windows 8.1 supports multi-touch gestures. Now, you can use your keyboard, mouse or the touchpad using simple gestures. Whether you're browsing apps, reading a book or typing on the go with touch, you'll be able to seamlessly switch between all three interactive components. With the touchpad, Windows 8.1 allows you to use multi-touch gestures, such as swipe, drag, tap, slide, pinch-to-zoom and more.
To the Cloud
With Windows 8.1, when signed in using your Microsoft account, you'll have instant access to your personal Start screen, themes, language preferences, browsing history, and browser favorites. You can also connect to services such as Microsoft Outlook, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, and more.

This convertible ultrabook has it all, lightweight, fast, great screen resolution, and multiple input options.

I got this computer for travel photography. It's about three pounds in weight and just the right size for my backpack.

Start up time is phenomenal. Two seconds after turning the computer on, I'm working.

With the solid state memory, even large images are edited quickly.

I'm very happy with the new toy.

Battery life is absolutely amazing at about 10 hours. The first power Windows laptop where I can even go 2-3 days without charging with light use. Wow. The i5 and new graphics are if anything even faster than the old i7. The most obvious competition would I guess be a Surface 3 if you want pen input and a Core processor, but I wanted a 13" screen a better keyboard. Memory is too small at 128GB but I bought a 256GB SD card and that works extremely well, with all programs and settings etc on the SSD and most of my data on the SD card. Sound is excellent. I loved the Duo 11 and am just as impressed with the big brother.

I was seriously researching Microsoft Surface Pro3 purchase for $ after it was released to the market recently and then found this GREAT CHOICE for a GREAT PRICE! Even better my dream brand VAIO (though I'm saddened by the fact that Sony is discontinuing it's laptop unit) and a 100% satisfactory purchase from one of the best TRUSTED companies in the country for electronics products - B & H Photo and Video. Here's why I like this product.1. Style - You cannot beat Vaio style!2. 2 in 1 convertible convenience (laptop/tablet)3. Windows 8.1 with better hardware (Haswell Intel i5)4. Compared to Surface Pro3, you will get all sorts of ports - importantly 2 USB, 1-HDMI, 1-SD card reader slot etc5. Stylus pen!6. Ultra light weightI heard about accidental turn on of power switch but I have not experienced anything like this. Overall 5 STAR!!

Comments about Sony VAIO Duo 13 SVD13233CXB 13.3" Multi-Touch Convertible Ultrabook Computer (Carbon Black):

I've had a dell latitude 4200 for a number of years and loved a 1.1 KG laptop that was speedy enough for the basics that was barely noticeable in a backpack.

When the VAIO Duo 13 SVD13233CXB was at a bargain price I found it too hard to resist the temptation to upgrade a 6 year old laptop. The free carry case and VGA adapter made the deal from B&H impossible to resist.

Overall I'm quite happy with the laptop, though admittedly only using for a couple of days.

The screen is great to use. I thought the FHD resolution would make text too small but it's quite easy to read and the extra space makes web browsing a lot easier, as well as spreadsheets.

The SSD inside ain't the fastest, but it's zippy enough. I think it's around 7 or 8 seconds to boot up from off and it feels instant when brought out of sleep mode.

The battery life is amazing. I've been off the charger now 3 hours doing web browsing and still have 86% left after 3 hours.

The keyboard will take you a little bit to get used to, but I'm finding I'm just as accurate as my other laptop or standard keyboard now. The track pad is a bit trickier, but not too bad. Half the time I find I just use the touch screen instead. If it becomes too big an issue I'll get a mouse to plug in.

The laptop is bigger than I expected. The bezel around the screen would be over twice as much as my old dell. They could quite easily shave off around an inch if they could have it near borderless like my Note 3. It's also noticeably heavier than my old dell, but not so much. I'd say it's a bit too heavy to hold as a tablet for an extended period

I've yet to hear the fan start reving up, and even when using in tablet mode it doesn't seem to get warm. I suppose if you're looking to do demanding kinds of work this isn't the kind of device you'd be after. That said, everything seems to be near instant with the laptop.

I've not tried the pen but will have to give it a go. From what I've read it does have good accuracy and perfect for hand written notes.

Not too much annoying bloatware on the device. Easy enough to free up some space by removing the trial version of MS office. They have a kasperkey trial install but just deleted that folder. You are stuck with < 70GB of usable space, but with 64GB SD UHS-1 cards now pretty cheap, adding extra storage for files is not too tricky.

Windows 8 is a bit of a chore. I spent about an hour getting it more like windows 7, though you can't quite go fully back to that. Fairly happy with how I've got it set up now.

I like the vaio care will do automatic updates. This is done in a far easier way than dell does. Just a shame it was nearly 3 GB in windows and sony updates.

All in all I'm so far quite happy with the laptop. Part of me wishes they'd taken the way that HP and Lenovo do this kind of device with the twist style screen as then the keyboard could be more full sized with a bigger track pad. I'd also prefer discreet left right buttons, but have just abut got the hang of how to use the track pad to click and drag

Another con would be the fixed 45 degree angle when in laptop mode. The viewing angles is ok when not at the perfect angle, but I can see it being an issue in some circumstances.
