The Formatt-Hitech 16mm Firecrest IRND 4.8 Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 16 stop reduction in exposure. This 4.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The IRND design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multi-coating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multi-coating is also scratch-resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. It measures 3.9 x 3.9" / 100 x 100mm and is 0.08" / 2mm-thick, making it compatible with the Formatt-Hitech 100mm Filter Holder.

ND 4.8 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 16 stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.
The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multi-coating is water- and scratch-resistance for greater overall durability.
Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and its 2mm-thick design is compatible with the Formatt-Hitech 100mm Filter Holder.

Comments about Formatt Hitech 100 x 100mm Firecrest IRND 4.8 Filter:

        No color cast

        Long Exposure Time

        Fits Lee Foundation Holder (almost)

The only thing with this filter is that it is slightly narrower than my Lee Foundation holder so I have to use gaffers tape around the edges of the holder after the filter is in place. I used the foam that came with it but this still doesn't solve for it being narrower.

Comments about Formatt Hitech 100 x 100mm Firecrest IRND 4.8 Filter:

This filter has either minimal or no color cast. I have used the B+W and Lee 3.0 ND filters and they both have color casts. The IR contamination is non-existent making post processing much easier. 16 stops is quite dense, a daylight exposure of 6 seconds F2 is needed for iso 160 if you follow the basic exposure rule of 1/iso @f16 and then account for 16 stops. This filter fits the basic Lee holder, making it quite convenient, and the glass makes it sharper than the plastic versions.

Comments about Formatt Hitech 100 x 100mm Firecrest IRND 4.8 Filter:

As a prostop 10 owner, I was looking for something without the color cast. I decided to give this a try. It is a glass filter without the foam ring found on the prostop. Fits in the 100mm holder perfectly. I used some black gaffers tape around the outside of the frame to seal out the light. 16 stops blocks alot of light. Be ready for some real long exposures in lower light. No color cast at all.

I use this 100 x 100mm Firecrest IRND 4.8 Filter by Formatt Hitech in my 4X4 matte box to slow down water movement in seascapes. It works as designed with no noticeable color shift, even on very long exposures.
