The Canon EF Lens to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Speed Booster from Metabones adapts Canon EF lenses to Micro four Thirds mount, while using custom optics to increase the angle of view and the maximum aperture of the lens. It is designed specifically for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and features built-in electronics which let you set the lens aperture using the controls on the camera body.

The Speed Booster works by shrinking the image circle of your Canon EF lens down to better fit the smaller sensor of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. This has the effect of making the angle of view of the lens 0.58x wider or, in other terms, reducing the crop factor of the camera from 3.02x to 1.75x.

When the Speed Booster concentrates the image circle from a lens, the brightness of the image is increased by 1 2/3 stops. This yields a maximum output aperture of f/0.74 when using a Canon EF f/1.2 lens. In addition to lens speed and angle of view, the Speed Booster also increases the lens' MTF, or how faithfully the lens transfers detail from the object to the camera sensor. These increases in MTF are seen in the corners as well as the center of the images.

To reduce strain on the Pocket Camera's MFT mount, the Speed Booster includes a removable Arca-type tripod foot to help support the weight of the adapter and lens. In addition to being compatible with Arca-type quick-release heads, it also has a 1/4"-20 threaded hole for mounting to other tripods, rigs, or quick-release plates. The built-in electronics are powered by the camera body, so no additional power supply is needed. To reduce the drain on your camera's battery, the Speed Booster uses an efficient switched-mode power supply, which continually switches between on and off states, only drawing power when it needs it.

Note: This Speed Booster is NOT compatible with the Panasonic GH4 or other MFT mount cameras. This is for use with Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera only. When the Speed Booster is used with other MFT mount cameras, it's rear element may cause damage to the camera.

List of Manual Focus Lenses Which Require MODIFICATION to be Used with Speed Booster
Many manual focus lenses have rear protrusions (spikes, levers, other appendages) which can damage the optics and/or housing of Speed Booster. They need to be modified before they can be safely used on Speed Booster via third party adapter rings. Check and make sure there are no rear protrusions from the adapter/lens combination before using on Speed Booster. The following is an incomplete list of lenses known to be incompatible without modification:

Leica R
  • Super-Elmar-R 15mm
  • Elmarit R 28mm f/2.8
  • Elmarit R 35mm f/2.8
  • Summicron R 50mm f/2

I own the Metabones NIK to MFT for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, and a Metabones NIK to MFT dumb adapter for the BMPCC, (and all sorts of lenses) to give you some perspective on my review.

The EF speed booster seems to work with the same optical quality (which is to say, high) as the NIK to MFT BMPCC SB.

The only option that the EF SB for BMPCC has over the NIK G SB to BMPCC, IMHO, is that it provides (battery-sucking) power for image stabilization on EF lenses that are supported.

Unlike the NIK SB for the BMPCC, the EF SB controls aperture by using the same up and down buttons on the camera that control aperture on native (active mounted) MFT lenses. I prefer the aperture ring on the NIK SB because I feel it's faster and more accurate- but other might prefer the camera controls.

I say that this adapter has limited functionality because there is NO AUTO-FOCUS SUPPORT, no official support for EF-S lenses (see below), it's NOT compatible with the GH4 (it's actually programmed not to work with that camera), no compatibility with M42 adapters, and it provides no lens correction (but that should be obvious).

    A few things to note:

Officially, only some Canon EF lenses- and EF lenses from Tamron, Sigma and Tokina (that are registered with the SB) are supported. (See their site for more info). But, it's known that some third party lenses in DX format are supported, like the excellent Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 and the great Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.

Lenses made for Canon crop sensor cameras (APS-C) *can* work on this adapter, but here's the catch: If it's a Canon brand lens then it will have an EF-S mount (3rd parties use the EF mount with both DX and FX), which means to use that lens it has to be both unofficially supported and you have to be brave- because it probably means removing a part of the EF-S mount that would otherwise stick back too far and hit the speed booster. Some EF-S lenses have pieces that can't be removed. So DO YOUR RESEARCH if you want to get crazy like that.

Lastly, first-gen Metabones products are painfully notorious for issues. I think MB is on their 4th version of the smart EF to NEX adapter in just over a year. Pricey mistakes. And I got to find out the hard way with their first batch of NIK to MFT speed boosters for the BMPCC-- as they were manufactured with way-to-tight mounts and a tripod foot that would fail. So fair warning to anyone with an early-gen Nikon BMPCC speed booster ***immediately send it in to Metabones before you camera falls off at a shoot and ends you day/career/etc.*** I broke a camera and a lens and others have broken even more, yet MB refuse to issue a recall on that problem. So buyer beware. And buyer have fun-- the MB speed booster for the BMPCC is the only way to shoot with this camera (in my humble opinion).

so. I thought mine was broken or something but it is not.

I cam can control focus manually so it is fine.
however without auto focus, it seems too expensive.

anyways there is no other options for using ef lens right?

Comments about Metabones Canon EF Lens to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Speed Booster:

If you are a BMPCC owner, this is a must-have for shooting with the widely available canon EF lenses. It does it's job and it does it's job well. It's super tight on the BMPCC MFT mount, just so you know. Mine stays on my camera 24/7. Just know that it will make your camera slightly less battery efficient but it's worth it. I recommend external power anyways. Image stabilization works on all the lenses I've tried with it, not to mention you can even use many EF-S lenses with very simply modification! Great buy!

Makes the BMPCC 3x the camera

        By Stephen

        from Tampa, FL

Comments about Metabones Canon EF Lens to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Speed Booster:

I already loved the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. My problem was that I own a decent amount of EF glass, and investing in a wide range of MFT lenses was not something I was particularly interested in doing. But it does so much more than just allow you to use your EF lenses - At a 1.75 crop factor, you can now easily achieve a true wide angle (without paying $1k for the Panasonic 7-14mm, which IMHO is a very poor lens for the money), you gain more than 1 stop of light with every lens, and you can attain shallow depth of field easily (if that's your thing).

My only major complaint about the Speedbooster is how much it drains the battery. The battery performance on the BMPCC is already awful, and this makes it worse when using an active EF lens. In colder temperatures this has caused the camera to just shut off after a few minutes (in situations where using an MFT lens did not). Fully manual lenses do not seem to cause this issue when using the adapter. There has been no issue with any lens when using external power sources.

I cannot recommend this device enough. It really is like having a new camera. If you already own EF lenses then the Speedbooster will pay for itself instantly in money saved on new lenses, and if you do not already have the MFT lenses, I feel confident the EF lens system is much more worthwhile investing in.

Small wonder, big joy and smiles!

        By Christopher Pinto

        from West Covina, California

Comments about Metabones Canon EF Lens to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Speed Booster:

First off, let's list what this adapters attributes are them we'll compare them to my real world experiences.

Pros: -increases aperture by 1 2/3 stop
-reduces FOV extreme crop of x3 to 1.75
-smart adapter allowing to use image stabization from IS lenses
-minimal loss of sharpness from lenses.

        Cons:
-adds extra length to overall lens protrusion from camera body
        -pricey

So let me tell my personal opinion on this adapter. The Metabones EF adapter for the BMPCC is amazing to say the least. It makes the camera a usable camera for almost any situation. The FOV is closer to a 35 mm equivalent. The brightness increase from the aperture boost makes the bmpcc take in low light similar to a 5Dmk3. The sharpness is still retained from great glass and the IS works flawlessly. The price is a bit more than Id usually spend on an adapter but it's honestly worth it. Just save up a little more for this adapter. No regrets. The only quirks I will be honest about that might pose a problem for some people, would be the tripod foot. I use a tamron 24-70 that has an 82mm front element and the focusing ring barely touches the quick release from the tripod foot being kind of short. So beware. Also the lens locking fitment can be a bit tight on different lenses but I'd rather have it tight than loose. Other than that it's just pure awesomeness. Go purchase it.

Comments about Metabones Canon EF Lens to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Speed Booster:

I've shot with Canon forever, so that's what all my glass is. I've used the BMCC for a project at school but never really got into grading that footage, so I've been really curious about this amazing color science everyone always talks about with the BlackMagic camera. I picked myself up a pocket cinema camera on black friday for $ along with a regular adapter for my glass. Big mistake. I sent the adapter back the next day and ordered this. This gives me the freedom to use my >$ in Canon glass with my the BMPCC. It's always exciting to get a new camera and begin to learn how it works and how you can use it to express your creativity, and the speed booster gives you that freedom. It's one of those things that makes the extreme limitation of a MFT sensor go away. You can have your creative freedom back with this product.

This speedbooster is a must-buy if you shoot with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. If you're looking at this product, you already know that it gives you a wider field of view and 1 2/3 extra stops of light. You may not know, however, that your image gets even sharper when you use the speedbooster. It does. Add a standard EF to Micro Four Thirds adapter (the Vello here on the B&H store does a good job) and you've effectively doubled your lens choices for around $. Great product, and delivered quickly and capably by B&H.

This simply is the biggest life saver in my camera bag. By having this it makes the Pocket able to shoot in tight spaces by reducing the awful crop factor. This small piece of gear also gives you an entire stop of light! Making a lens that is f2.8 at its lowest and brings it to a f1.8. I have seriously not found a single down side to this!If you have the extra cash totally drop it on this piece of equipment!

I can't rate the speed booster highly enough. Previous to owning this I was shooting using EF lenses on a simple manual aperture lens adapter from @. That system was next to useless - serious vignetting etc. Now, my good canon glass has full internal aperture control and I'm finally getting the results promised by this camera. I was blown away by what it can achieve. Paired up with the Sigma 18-35 1.8, this camera is now a monster.

cannot use auto focus or focus assistance on bmpcc.
I did not read review on ef to bmpcc active speed booster.
so. I thought mine was broken or something but it is not.

I cam can control focus manually so it is fine.
however without auto focus, it seems too expensive.

anyways there is no other options for using ef lens right?

Absolutely essential purchase for any owner of the BMPCC. The reduced crop factor is fantastic and so is the ability to use IS with my EF lenses. The price may seem a bit steep with the Pocket being back to normal now, but you won't regret it once you use it. It pays for itself after the first use and makes this camera more addicting than it already is.

I have Canon lenses and access to nice Canon lenses, and thus this was a no-brainer for me. Love the extra stop of light! Shoot in RAW, and then throw your image up against an ARRI ALEXA! Saves you from having to buy MFT lens which will only serve the one purpose of the camera. Terrible battery life, terrible on-board sound options, but the image is pure gold.

The pros are all available in the description above. I just came here to point out it all works great. It is a snug (solid) fit to the camera body, like others have said. The product as a whole has been pristine thus far, and I could not be happier with it. Thank you Metabones! I get to use all my nice Canon glass :) yay.

Comments about Metabones Canon EF Lens to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Speed Booster:

We're using 2 of these on our BMPCC's along with the Sigma 17-50 2.8 lenses. This gives us the Full Frame field of view of a 28-84 with a maximum aperture of F1.7. We have control of Iris although focus is still manual. We connect these through the DataVideo DAC-70's and we can switch live with the BMD ATEM Television Studio. It's an amazingly high quality setup for the money. The speedbooster also has the added benefit of sharpening the lens just a tiny bit. Basically you can't go wrong!

I use this on my BMPCC with a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8, making it much more versatile. Low light shooting is amazing.Unfortunately, with a lens with OIS, it sucks up battery to about 1/4 to 1/2 the normal (so expect 15-30 minutes of use compared to the usual 50-60 min shooting in ProRes). That has been my experience.Overall, great product for the BMPCC.

This is an amazing speebooster. It helps out a lot with the 2X crop factor you get with the BMPCC. I love how it turns my 24-70 2.8 into a 1.7!
