I have owned an earlier Morris Mini slave for 20 years and despite being dropped and having a cracked dome, it just keeps on working. I have recently been doing more locality photography and found the unpredictable nature of my speedlights frustrating. I Googled "Morris Mini Slave" and discovered that B&H stock them. Well, quick as a flash ( pun intended ) I purchased 2 and they now do the jobs the speedlights struggle with. They are handy to put behind a subject for head shots to give separation, illuminating dark corners in interior images, and so on. The downside is that you can't control their power output but I overcome this by changing my camera's ISO or simply putting a white handkerchief over one. They are affordable, quick, portable, easy to use little helpers.

The Morris version of this flash offers a PC synch terminal and includes a cable, where as the SP Systems version does not. They both are otherwise seemingly identical.I had difficulty getting the flash to fire reliably via the slave sensor when it was hidden where I needed it (but still in the line of another flash). I tried the SP Systems version also and had the same difficulty. The SP Systems version comes with a little suction cup mount and is about[$] less, but no PC terminal. There is no variance of output, but for the money if you can get it to fire reliably, such as with ebay radio slaves or pocket wizards then they are a steal. I used them to try to throw just a little extra light in architectural shoots, but I returned them and will be trying a different product. I received accurate, helpful and informed advice from the lighting expert on staff at B & H, and of course, the return process was easy and hassle free.

Comments about Morris Mini Slave Wide Plus:

I bought this after discovering it was suggested by a former National Geographic photographer in Seattle. Nice to have in the bag for adding extra punch in dark corners, or for accenting a camp fire as the pro photog did. It can be fired by a camera but is best used reacting automatically to the main flash. I will need to buy some gels to wrap around this. Wish it had dedicated color gels.

The mini slave light is great for highlighting secondary objects or subjects in your composition. A dome diffuser would be really handy for lessening the output but it's small enough that it can be an easy fix. Great product and great addition to on-location strobes.

Very compct little strobe that runs on two AA batteries. I'm new to lighting and was hand holding it for some product shots and it worked great. It seems to recharge about every few seconds.Has a tiny ready indicator light when armed, a sync port, and comes with an included short sync cord as well. It's very small, you could practically hide it anywhere, it also has a 1/4 inch mounting hole. Great little product, definitely will be buying more from B&H. [...]

FYI - this mini slave does not support TTL metering. I couldn't understand why the slave's flash wasn't appearing in my photos. After a little tinkering, I found that it was going off when my TTL preflash went off, leaving it's capacitors empty of charge for when the main flash burst went off. It operates with manual flash only. That dropped it to four stars. The slow recharge time dropped it to three...

Comments about Morris Mini Slave Wide Plus:

These units are great when you want to throw in a splash of light somewhere to add drama to a 2 light setup. I have 5 and often throw them behind computer monitors to separate them from a dark wall. I also ordered the colored gels that snap on the top of the units. The main thing lacking is a snap on ND filter that allows you to knock back the light output. They are not available, which means you have to build your other light output around this unit or try to cut a ND filter sheet to an impossible shape to cover a round dome. I have written the company about this and never heard from them. Other than that they work as promised although a bit fragile if you travel with them.

These things are so much fun. Wish I had gotten one years ago. The ability to hide one in an unexpected place makes for some creative photos. I'm triggering it with my flash set to manual. But triggering with a pocketwizard would be better. Be careful with it outside. I found that a bright reflection will trigger the flash. They're cheap enough to get several.

Was hoping to use this for a kiss of light in conjunction with my strobes. Unfortunately, it will not fire consistently. I would wait until I saw the light go on and still it would misfire unless I was about a foot away from it. From 4 feet away and nothing to block the signal, not reliable at all. Very disappointed as I was looking for something to set on bookshelves etc for like I said, just a kiss of light in the right place. I chose to return and have not ordered anything else.

Comments about Morris Mini Slave Wide Plus:

I photograph aircraft from time to time. It's nice to be able to place a small fill strobe in unique locations on the aircraft to achieve unique lighting effects.

Comments about Morris Mini Slave Wide Plus:

I take this Morris mini every where I go since I use strobist strategies. If I need a splash of color I add a gel or a hair light I add to a boom with diffusion.
There is also place to mount to a quarter twenty bolt for easy mounting to a gorilla pod.

You will find a use for this little burst of light used as a slave or triggered remotely.

Comments about Morris Mini Slave Wide Plus:

This flash unit is lightweight, small and economical. Two AA cells will provide a reasonable number of relatively fast and powerful cyclings and the built-in optical trigger seems sensitive enough even in obstructed corners and tight spots. Very useful despite the lack of power output settings and quite fun. The output is powerful enough IMHO. It can be used w/ an optional basic suction cup which I yet have to try. I would use some kind of cushion beneath it and test (time it) extensively before use in this combination. I bought three and would get even more. I am not a long time owner, so can't comment on durability, but seems good enough. Recomended.

I shoot weddings and will use this product to backlight wedding dresses, as a handy (in my shoulder bag) light on the go, and to add color to walls during the reception. I only wish it had either a set of ND filters or a way to control partial power.
