The B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer MRC Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.
A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.
Kaesemann-type filters feature greater optical efficiency than regular polarizing foils and are more neutral in color. The polarizing foils are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass layers, which are then precision-polished to achieve the most accurate plano-parallel surface. This edge sealing protects the filter layers from humidity and are ideal for use with high-speed telephoto and apochromatic lenses.
The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters.
B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

I've used B+W Circular Polarizers since investing in higher grade lenses. With quality lenses, I do not like to use filters any more than necessary - you pay more for the quality glass, why add another layer that could degrade the image? However, sometimes the situation calls for a circular polarizer. The filters from B+W have the high quality desired and are built to last. Recent trips to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National yielded great images taken with these polarizers. By the way, these and the B+W UV filters protected my front elements from the caustic gasses of the thermal features of Yellowstone). I had them in 52mm and 67mm sizes, then recently purchased two great lenses with 77mm filter sizes. I immediately ordered the third Kaesemann CP for these.

Excellent glass and filtration (as it should be for a top-tier product and brand name B+W. But there's a big catch in terms of mounting threads... notorious for "locking up" once screwed on, especially when screwed into B+W's setup ring (anodized aluminum). Large front section of P-filter spins as is required for polarizing-angle use; behind that is a very tiny gripping area ring... that too-often refuses to unscrew. B+W claims they've never heard of the issue. Unscrewing it in the field under difficult circumstances is near impossible, even indoors. Do consider buying filter-wrenches. Oddly, B+W doesn't make any, nor provide them with a polarizer. In summary: great glass. Poor mount.

I am comparing this to the SinghRay polarizer. For those who know Singh Ray it is one of the most expensive out there. The B+W seems to be of equal quality. I can't tell the difference!

Excellent glass, the colors pop on my pictures. Built better than it has to be. I had a Vivitar CP filter on another lense that I thought was good. It doesn't begin to compare with B&W.

had a name brand filter for my nikon 18-300 zoom lens and was really getting alot more flare with this particular lens. read on one of the photo blogs that this was not uncommon with my particular lens. bought the b&w and tried it. not one pic with flare. shot over 1000 pics in italy in bright sun. kept me from selling the lens

This is an excellent, well made filter as you would expect from B+W. I use it primarily for shooting window displays and landscapes when glaring water is present. I especially like the filter because you can control the amount of glare that is removed by simply turning the ring.

I have this filter on my d7000 with a 18-300 mm lens and a uv filter as well. At it's widest I get a bit of vignetting cutting the corners so that's going to be a bummer to deal with but overall the filter is great and does its job.

This is a high quality polarizer from B+W. I have tried several polarizers/filters from other brands and none of them match the high quality and construction of this cir POL.
Buy it and you will be happy forever. B&H custimer service best ever!

Comments about B+W 77mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer MRC Filter:
Over the years I have tried several filters that promise "easy" to clean, beautiful clarity and even scratch resistant. Even with a pen cleaner many of these filters just smudged the grime. This Kaesemann is made of high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity and the Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. This is the easiest to clean filter I have ever used! It is solid construction with a brass ring which makes fitting snug and secure. The clarity is pristine, a little more neutral in color than most filters which is more like real life and less headaches dealing with chroma and saturation issues in post. At a 90 degree angle from the sun the filter really proves it's worth as it eliminates most of the haze in the background and greatly reduces glare and reflection. It cost a little more but believe me, once you own it you'll never want to be without it. I love this filter!

I only have experience with this CP and another very cheap model. This one is far superior to what I had before. Mostly in that it turns smoothly and does not easily unscrew if turned in that direction. I am not a filter expert but did my research before buying and feel that it is a very good product at a reasonable price.

I use this filter exclusively on a wide angle lens for landscape photos. It does a great job of darkening the sky. I like that it only has 1.3 stops so it dosen't darken the whole scene. So far I can't think of any complaints.

If this fliter can be used with a non-wide angel lense then I would strongly recommend it. It has clear optics and strong construction. However, when I tried with my nikon 10-24mm I had a light vignetting effect. I had that effect only at 10mm. I did not know about the slim version of this filter, so I guess that was my bad. but if you want to stack it with another fliter at 10mm then you should expect a high vigetting effect. I attached a photo showing the result of stacking 2 fliters this fliter and another nd from lower quality brand.

My first use of a polarizing filter (from a friend's recommendation). It was a sunny day with snow on the ground.
I have nothing to compare it to, but this one was suggested as the best of the best and I have no reason to doubt that - might as well do it right the first time.
It was used on the Sigma 35 1.4 and Canon T1i.

Great polarizer. Gives clean, even tones to colors, especially blues. Multi-coating helps keep glare and haze from shining through, but still plenty of light for great photos. I would definitely buy another B+W filter!

This filter is amazing. I have owned a Hoya polarizer for over 7 years and it finally fell apart. I decided to go with another brand this time just to see if there was a difference. The sharpness I achieved from this polarizer was much better than the Hoya. The greatest difference that I have noticed between the two was in the area of contrast. I have not had to do any major contrast adjustments with this filter.
