The Photek Softlighter 60" Umbrella takes light from your strobe head or monolight, reflects it into its white panel and then softens it again with a diffuser on its way out.

Some older flash heads (Elinchrom, Profoto) have very narrow (7mm) umbrella receivers. This Softlighter model has a narrower-than-standard shaft to fit such a light.

This size is perfect for a 1-2 person full-length shot, or up to a 4x5' product setup.

Note: This size does not include the gold and silver discs.

Unique construction consisting of ten panels instead of the usual eight gives more reflective surface, more perfect circle of light - more flattering catch lights in the subject's eyes.
The removable black nylon cover stops all stray and ricochet light, enhancing total light control.
With removal of its black cover and a reversal of direction, the Softlighter II becomes a "softbox" -- a shoot-through diffuser, providing light that can be used either as a main light source or as a flattering fill.
Note: For mounting shoe mount flash units to the Softlighter II a shoe mount light stand/umbrella adapter is necessary. Shoe mount flash units must be set to Manual because the entire flash will be inside the umbrella (unless the flash unit is equipped with a remote sensor).
Note: For strobe use only -- not for use with hot lights, or modeling lights over 250 watts.

Very good product But the Space for the Light head
is small , could have been slightly bigger , also the diffuser could have had proper wrap in the storage.

      Comments about Photek Softlighter II with 7mm Shaft - (60" / 1.5 m):

I love larger light modifiers. I have three 7' parabolic umbrellas, a few deep octa's, a Buff PLM, and numerous other large softboxes and umbrellas. Maybe I'm an addict? While I find good uses for all of them, I like using the umbrellas with diffuser panels like a big octa softbox cause they are a breeze to set up and use, then take down. The way I have to set up my studio, this means a lot to me right now. I love the soft, wrap around effect a larger diffused umbrellas offers. I can use it as fill or as the key light and in many cases, as the only light. They work with larger studio strobes, battery strobes like a 600R or single and ganged speedlights. Truly flexible.
I have heard many great things about the Sofftlighter II but owning so many similar modifiers, I was hesitant to pick one up. For some reason, maybe just an impulse, I ordered the 60" version to give it a try. Wow. Its not going to replace EVERY other similar modifier, although I might be able to, but it has quickly become my go to light mod for people pictures, be they portraits, tight headshots, or 3/4 and full length body shots. You can't really get a bad picture with this thing. I've been using it with a 500 to 640 w/s studio strobes of late or my 600R and coupling it with a small beauty dish at about a 3:1 to 4:1 ratio and loving the results. I've used it as fill with the BD the key light and love it. Love it too reversed for a completely different look. I could go on and on but man, this thing rocks. I find the diffuser to be my favorite thing. Its some sort of sailcloth, which I think makes the difference over other diffusers I use. It's well made and surprisingly tough in use and holds up well. The case is nice too offering a separate pocket for the diffuser. Good stuff here. You can't go wrong.

      Comments about Photek Softlighter II with 7mm Shaft - (60" / 1.5 m):

When I purchased this, I wasn't aware that the 7mm version had no removable shaft. It's ok though. The light quality this modifier puts out is so great, and soft that that doesn't take away from it.

I will probably buy another that is 8mm with the removable shaft, and use this one as a backup. The material on the front diffusor doesnt really feel all that durable. The modifier is VERY easy to setup and break down, and is light weight, and ready to use on location. Make sure you weigh the stand down with some sandbags though, or you WILL have a tip over if a slight breeze blows by.

I own a elinchrom deep octa as well, and this is a very different modifier, that is equally as great as that one. Love it despite it's short comings.

        Comments about Photek Softlighter II with 7mm Shaft - (60" / 1.5 m):

I just love how quickly and easily these set-up on location. I have the 48" (?) as well and was looking for the biggest octa-style mod I could get for a decent price. I have yet to try the PLM's (adittedly a somewhat different mod), but this is pretty sweet. Definitely more Octa than Para (soft fall-off) but a really nice light. The 48" is, to me, equally soft and great for almost full-body and this just adds coverage.

CONS: The 7mm shaft is not removeable for in-tight use and overall, the fabric could be a little tighter to make it less of a sail in the wind.

One of the nicest portrait soft lights I've ever shot with...
Because it's very fragile, should be assembled carefully, and avoided to be carried in outdoor photoshootings....

I've been using an Elinchrom Octabank for a couple of years and decided to try the Softliter for location shoots. Turns out that the light quality is gorgeous.

Better yet, setting it up is extremely simple and quick. And the price is hard to beat so I bought 2 at a go.

This is what they call Bang for the Buck!
A no brainer modifier, anybody can get great results with this one, easy to setup and very well made for its price.
The only complain i might have is that the shaft sticks out to long, this is only because i have to use the 7mm shaft on my Elinchroms.

I needed something big for flattering light to take photos of people and I chose this. It pretty much works well.

You lose a bit of power with the reflection and diffusion so I wouldn't recommend using battery powered strobes with this. You wouldn't get away with low ISO. When you move it closer, it can sometimes get in the way also.
