Formatt Hitech 85mm Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Resin Filter - for Cokin P

You Pay: $28.94

Hitech Neutral Density gels are available in small increments and have many uses. They offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear grey and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance. They have four main uses: 1) To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars. 2) To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background. 3) To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations. 4) To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure.

This filter measures 85 x 85mm and fits the Cokin P series holder and the Hitech "P" series holder.

These filters are available in increments from 1/3 stop to 4 stops exposure reduction.

Neutral Density factors:

ND .10 (exposure adjustment = 1/3 stop)

ND .20 (exposure adjustment = 2/3 stop)

ND .30 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop)

ND .60 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops)

ND .90 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops)

ND 1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4stops)

Comments about Formatt Hitech 85mm Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Resin Filter for Cokin P:

Filter gives a very slight magenta cast while shooting in natural light, less of a cast than Cokin filters, easily correctable but takes an extra moment in Raw processing. The diagonally cut corners make this filter easier to insert into filter holder, but do cut down your maximum wide angle view before they become visible in frame (around 19-21mm 35mm equivalent). The filter also only comes in a cheap plastic sleeve, so plan on owning a filter wallet or pouch to carry these around in.

    Overall a very nice filter.

Comments about Formatt Hitech 85mm Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Resin Filter for Cokin P:

I recently bought this as a replacement for my Cokin N.9 which broke. First impression, I dislike how thin and fragile it feels. It's wafer thin, just like my Hitech ND grads. The Cokin is several mm thicker and taller to boot, which makes it more usefully if you're stacking filters and need more lens coverage.

Second impression, the color is surprisingly neutral compared to the Cokin, which was quite red in comparison. The color balance is pretty close to Tiffen and Schneider glass NDs which are much more expensive. All in all, a pretty good value but get a hard case for it or it won't last long. I put it in my old plastic Cokin filter case which came with my Cokin N.9.
